Even a total as formidable as 187 wasn't enough for Deccan Chargers' inexperienced bowling attack to pull off a win against Delhi Daredevils. David Warner filled the vacuum left by Kevin Pietersen with a blistering century - his second in the IPL - in only his second game of the season. With help from Naman Ojha, Daredevils butchered their way back to No.1, overhauling the target with 20 balls to spare.

Chargers fielded a bowling unit without foreign players, the most experienced of the lot being Amit Mishra. It was a recipe for a mauling. There was no respite even at the other end, as the promising Ojha capitalised on his promotion, hitting five sixes in his 64. Warner and Ojha overshadowed a similar performance from another Indo-Australian left-right duo earlier in the evening - Shikhar Dhawan and Cameron White.

Daredevils' response was so swift and intimidating that Virender Sehwag's early departure was a distant memory. Sehwag tried to make a mockery of the decision to open the bowling with Dhawan by lofting the first ball to long-off. A similar attempt off the second ball resulted in a top edge that swirled to point, where White held a well-judged catch running backwards.

It was the only memorable bit of fielding from Chargers. The familiar misfields were characteristic of another flat performance, completely out of sync with the batting. Warner hit two forceful boundaries to take 16 off the opening over and set the tone for the rest of the chase.

Warner exposed the lack of depth and experience in the bowling, one that should serve as a lesson for the franchise before the next trading window. TP Sudhindra, back after warming the bench for over a month, gave away 13 in his first over. Ashish Reddy, one of the impressive newcomers this season for Chargers, had his confidence dented with a 20-run opening over. Two consecutive short balls were pounded by Warner over cover and deep square-leg. When Reddy pitched it full, he was hit through the off side.

Manpreet Gony was the only bowler with respectable figures. Mishra, the most experienced, went for 44 off four. Twenty-six of those runs were scored by Ojha, who used his feet to smash two sixes down the ground.

Warner, who looked below his best on the more sluggish pitches in the West Indies, was at home here with the ball coming onto the bat. He played his trademark pulls, one of which brought up his century. His stand of 189 with Ojha was the second-best in the IPL, behind Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh's 206 for Kings XI Punjab in 2011.

The 126 between Dhawan and White wasn't lacking in quality either. The pair shrugged off a relatively slow first half with power hitting in the last nine overs. The partnership featured audacious shots like the Dilscoop and the paddle sweep, interspersed with powerful straight hits and muscled sixes over deep midwicket.

Dhawan was particularly strong over the on side, hitting consecutive sixes off left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem, and raced to his fifty with consecutive straight hits off Irfan Pathan.

When the slower bowlers tossed it up, Dhawan hammered over the on side; when Morne Morkel aimed at the base of the stumps, he strolled across his stumps and paddled over the helpless short fine leg fielder. A century was there for the taking against a stunned bowling attack, but a brilliant fielding effort from Nadeem, a direct hit from behind square leg, caught Dhawan a mile out of his crease.

White, who had earlier brought up the century stand with a six over deep midwicket off Nadeem, holed out to a top edge in the final over. Chargers, in the last nine overs, plundered 117 runs. Their bowlers, however, failed to defend that effort.

DEAR PAI 11 once see the RCB and CSK. how many local players there in the team. RCB: vinay kumar, appanna, mithun,h patel, mayank agarwal, aravind, from these players there is minimum of three are in sqad. see CSK: vijay, badrinath, anirudda, ashwin, yomahesh, mukund. from these players also min of 4 are in sqad. but see in DC eight players are there from both hyd and andhra, but in playing 11 only one person got chance in every match. ravi teja performed well in last ipl, but ipl 5 he doesnt get chances. actually he is an opener batsmen. played only two matches and batted in only one match. akshat reddy also performed well againast punjab. but in next match he is in dugout. see jaggi, chiplli, pardhiv not performed well, but they will get more number of chances than others. DC not utilised tanmay mishra talent.he is an international player.

IPL 5------------DC POSITION LAST IPL 6-------------DC WINNER

i think MUMBAI INDIANS get double benefit with DC. see the following players. 1.rohit 2.suman 3.ojha 4.rp singh 5.symonds 6.gibbs 7.robin singh (coach) 8. rayudu. all these players are in DC in IPL1 except rayudu. but they are playing for MI in on going IPL. what DC management doing when these players are flying to other teams. even they cant retain single player with them. they are the members of IPL 2 (winners). And they cant buy babk in auction. i dont know what plan they are following. investing too much money for daniel--christian,harris. even they are not international players. this is the politics played by coach darren lehman. they are ignoring the VVS laxman who is fantastic player of world cricket. if sachin, dravid, ganguly and other old guys are playing extreemly well in ipl DC thrown the laxman. see the team no single player from hyderabad. all domestic players are from other states only. with out local players how can we get local feeling that this team me.

Well.. what matters for DC is individual position for each players.. :) hurts but very true.. :) this is what happens only some players are performing in the team....

Hope stayne would be back to the team.. in the next match.. :(

I have no clue why DC is still keeping Amit mishra in the team... Abhishek performed far better than This guy....

Imagine how good White and Dhawan would be if they got to face the Deccan bowling attack. Despite this handicap they're still two of the best batsmen in the tournament. White should really be back in the Australian side.

xylo: Dhawan and White are men in form. They both have done this damage to other bowling attacks too. But yeah leaking 120 odd runs in last 10 overs shouldn't have happened. Sehwag and co. might think over it. And when Morkel had 2 overs remaining, he could have brought earlier to break the partnership when both were going all guns blazing. Good to see Varun Aaron picking wickets. And for DD batting: Sehwag would be happy that Warner is NOT out-of-form unlike Taylor. And Ojha getting some batting practice and showing he can bat too when situation demands will only ease Sehwag's tension.

kc69: Exactly my point. How IMPORTANT it is for Indian domestic players to get chance in Playing XI. More over-hyped the team is, less are chances of a domestic player to make it to playing XI. Look @ MI - so many good Indian players already there - SRT, Rohit, Dinesh K, P. Ojha, RP Singh, Bhajji, Munaf Patel. A young Indian domestic player can't even think of getting chance in this team unless someone is injured or in horrible form. Same is with CSK - Vijay, Raina, Dhoni, Ashwin, Jadeja, Badrinath. No NEW domestic player would want to go with these heavy-loaded teams. Now look @ KXIP - Mandeep Singh showing what he is capable of. If he was in MI or CSK, he wouldn't have got consistent opportunities to open. Same is with Rahane - When he was with MI - he didn't get chance and now with RR he is their main batsman. >>>> @ Zaheer Hussain : Having said that a Young Indian player should go for teams like DC, RR - that's the only way they can show-case their talent with more opportunities

Should Delhi be happy that their batting power overawed a second-grade bowling lineup, or be worried that their first grade bowling arsenal was taken apart by the team placed last in the points table?
