Punjab keep pace with last-ball victory

63

Kings XI Punjab 194 for 6 (D Hussey 65*, Gurkeerat 29*) beat Deccan Chargers 190 for 4 (Dhawan 71, White 67) by four wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

For the second match in a day, the hero was a cricketer who was a complete unknown, playing his second game of the tournament. In the afternoon, Rajasthan Royals' offspinner Ajit Chandila took the first hat-trick of the season and the wind out of Pune Warriors' chase and in the second game, it was 21-year-old Gurkeerat Singh who handed Deccan Chargers their fifth last-over defeat of the season with an ice-cool display of hitting.

Chargers seemed to have the game in control for much of the time. First, their two most consistent batsmen, Shikhar Dhawan and Cameron White, added to their rapidly growing collection of half-centuries this season to lift Chargers to their second highest total of 2012. And soon after Azhar Mahmood was dismissed in the 13th over of the chase, the asking-rate was rocketing past 13, with David Hussey as the only recognised batsman remaining. Still, as they have so often this season, Chargers managed to make a hash of it, and end up on the losing side.

The first signs of trouble for Chargers came in the 15th over from Amit Mishra, when Hussey hammered a couple of leg-side sixes as Kings XI looted 21 off it. Madhya Pradesh seamer TP Sudhindra then seemed to have pulled things back with a yorker-filled over that went only for five in the first five deliveries, but he missed his length off the final ball and Hussey promptly dispatched it for a straight six.

Fifty needed off four overs and time for Chargers to turn to their most potent weapon, Dale Steyn. He delivered with two wickets in his comeback over, though Piyush Chawla got a couple of audacious boundaries off it. When Hussey muscled a slower one from Daniel Christian for six early in the 18th over, everyone thought the outcome of the game would depend on Hussey. Instead, there were no more boundaries from Hussey and most of the runs came from Gurkeerat.

First, Christian was drilled down the ground for four and then a fearless attempt to paddle a ball from outside off resulted in a streaky four off the thigh pad. Steyn has combusted on a couple of occasions at the death this season, and has been unhittable on others. This time he was back at his best-bowler-in-the-world mode, conceding just four singles off the first five balls, though the pressure on him was evident from the expletive-infused outburst at a fielder for shying at the stumps. The last ball of the over was a low full toss that Gurkeerat somehow squeezed behind point for a boundary, making it 16 required off the final over.

With Christian and Steyn having bowled out, Kumar Sangakkara had to choose between legspinner Mishra and quick bowler Manpreet Gony, and he picked Gony. Chargers' fielding seemed to have cost them on the first ball when a fumble allowed Hussey to return for two and retain the strike, but Hussey could only take a single off the next.

Gurkeerat was unfazed by the task at hand, clubbing the next ball over midwicket for six before placing the fourth delivery to the sweeper cover boundary. Two more were taken off the penultimate delivery, levelling the scores. Sangakkara brought in all his fielders, but Gony opted to go with the bouncer, which was probably the wrong option as Hussey could have scampered a bye even if Gurkeerat missed. Gurkeerat didn't though, getting an edge as he pulled it to the fine leg boundary to deliver victory that tightens the table - the top seven teams are only four points apart.

The late heroics were needed as Christian had taken two early wickets, including the crucial one of Shaun Marsh, to stall the chase. Mahmood then helped Kings XI gain ground with a quick 31, then the baton was taken by Hussey who speeded up the innings further before Gurkeerat provided the final burst.

Earlier - considering the three tough games remaining for them - Kings XI seemed to have blown their chances with an amateurish effort in the field. Two simple catches offered by White were put down and there were numerous fumbles as Chargers built up a big score.

Parthiv Patel featured in a brisk opening stand and Christian showed off his hitting skills at the death, but the innings revolved around a 96-run stand between Dhawan and White. The pair set a scorching pace, scoring at nearly 10 an over, and despite another underwhelming performance from Sangakkara, Chargers put up what looked like a winning score. Once again, though, repeating a familiar story from their season, they managed to go down despite controlling a big chunk of the match.

My comments won't be posted but i thought I'd have my say anyway. D.C need to get some players that can catch the ball, don't blame the bowlers. the whole season consists of dropped catches and bad fielding. People should watch the game and stop blaming bowlers for all the runs given away when the fielders can't catch the bloody ball. Ajitdj, how many IPL games have you played, you proberbly field the same has the rest of some of those local players playing for D.C, and then blame someone else.Have a good day.

@Pathiyal... It was Gilly who built this team and currently inspiring from the backend. Remember Hussey was a total failure last season...but Gilly had faith in Hussey. Its just that Gilly was injured after Azhar came in. Without a balanced team Gilly did wonders last season. Now with such a balanced team...Gilly can win IPL5 championship. See how overconfident was hussey in this game...he brought himself in the first 6 overs and deccan smashed him. Earlier we lost a match coz he brought chawla in the 19th over.

So far Hussey is ok and good....but for the big games and playoffs..Gilly's experience is needed. Dont forget Gilly has 3 World cup winner medals. Hope Gilly would be back for the big games

hussey's innings and the way he inspired the youngsters were some of the best moments in the entire IPL5. ill luck is following DC closely this season. no matter how good they bat....and steyn, how can the luck deceive him!!!!! :-)

Foundation for Kings was laid by great DC's own Amit Mishra in an over where Hussey clobbared him for 2 consecutive sixes and few fours. BCCI should pass a resolution that now or in future, a player with name Amith Mishra should never even be considered for selection. Also Steyn spoiled my day yesterday. I was hoping to see the epic battle b/w chawla and amith.

A last ball finish and last ball upsets are very common in t20's. But hold on a second!!! Losing at the last ball of the match for 6 times????? There is no way this can be possible!!! I mean its ridiculous!!!!!When are they going to learn???? When they will learn that when a batsmen is backing away towards the leg side either you need to follow the batsmen not to free his arms or just bowl it fast and full wide of off-stump so dat he gets beaten!! Come on DC ...use some logic!! Commonsense!! They just get over-confident once they see that 16 of 6 balls and if the first ball goes for a single only!! The performance of DC bowlers is seriously and utterly pathetic!!!!! 196,190,181,170....these are some good and solid PAR scores to win a match , you don't need a top class bowling performance to defend this....a normal decent performance supported by good fielding will do it 9 out of 10 times!!

For all who have been writing, there is absolutely no problem with DC. May be just back plan is not there. But there biggest mistake is taking Sanga in team. He never looked like confident himself....when young bowler like Gony is being hit all over the park... Sanga never bothered to go to him, speak, give him confidence. The last ball, when all the field is up, Gony bowled a bouncer? Sanga being so much experienced, didn't even had a talk. Its like, when your captian is a disaster, blaming young team members is no point

@funkyboy Hussey did a good job...but he was benefited from Azhar mahmood's entry into the team, which brought good balance to the team in both bowling and batting departments. Gilchrist never had a good balanced team. Hussey is nervous and in big games and for championship matches Gilly is a must. Without Gilly you can forget about getting thru DD and CSK. As per valthaty...I heard A Nayar and powar was also sent back home..but they came back and played right? Valthaty can be given a role at lower order...where we need hitters like him..couple of sixes and few fours...he can very well deliver there. And the team will like a champion team if he play in the lower order. Top order can also play their natural game. Hope Gilly as opener and Valthaty at lower order returns to team to beat big teams and also beat the teams in semifinals and finals

Oh! Oh!! Oh!! Poor White and Dhawan. Evrytym these two fire, the DC bowlers mess it up. Wel, one can ask them, 'How many runs you want to defend?' And the DC bowlers myt reply.... 'Probably 250 or 300!!!' Very poor. Better luck next yr.

Capitancy of Sangakkara is more pathetic than Ganguly leading PWI. Sangakkara, can't take responsibility like a Dhoni to lead the side and exhibit, nor he is a good captain. He moves away from his responsibilities when given a task...I suggest DC management that managing a team and inspiring leader is more important than just good players. There is very much fault of Sangakkara when he can't encourage his bowlers to try hard, may be asking support staff to work on them in his presence. I am Hyderabadi but still i support CSK because there local domestic players are given importance and where is place for domestic players in DC? It is very painful situation.Hope DC management will not be again careless. Change the way you play DC.

It is pity that David Hussey did not show the heart to give his Man of the Match to Gurkeerat Singh for his 29 in 12 balls. It is those 29 runs which made the difference. He should have followed ABD and Gauti. That should have been a great boost to the young guy.

  • on May 14, 2012, 8:38 GMT

every body is asking about gilcrist to join the team. Who will replace by him, Marsh not possible bcz he is the reliable batshman of KXIP, Hussay strong hitter of the ball, azhar the all rounder who make the team balance and haris the only bowler in KXI Team who can take wicket and have pace. No place for him,so bettr he doing the coaching.

  • anver777 on May 14, 2012, 8:07 GMT

What a pathetic show by DC bowlers in this whole IPL... if they can't defend 180's 190's regularly then there's some big issues in bowling dept... also i think Sanga's bowling changes at times is not up to the mark !!!! Better luck in next IPL !!!

Anyone who seen yesterday match can feel that there is no captain while KXI is bowling, overthrows, extras and no fielding spirit. Very poor captaincy from Hussey. Gilchrist should come back from injury.

Replace saini with gilichrist,Chitnis with valthaty and you can beat anyteam.

  • Tian31 on May 14, 2012, 5:46 GMT

After watching the end of this match there's no doubt that DC of 2012 is one of the worst teams in IPL history. They seriously need better Indian bowlers. Mishra means nothing in 20 over cricket and all there pace bowlers bowl 130km/h seam up with no variation, bread and butter for any good batsmen. The way they are playing now they will probably still find a way to lose a match even if the score 220!

  • pjny on May 14, 2012, 5:38 GMT

Fantastic coaching by Gilly. Fantastic batting by hussey and gurukeerat Next big games vs Delhi and chennai....Gilly should join the team without delay. Nervous David hussey might falter in these big games.

Next thing is Paul valthaty should be used in the lower order in place of siddharth chitnis.

These changes would make kings punjab a champion team.

Gilly please join the team....don't delay.

Now the team is very balanced...and Gilly can win Punjab, the IPL5 championship

What's DC is doing? It's simply unjustifiable that they lose despite posting real huge totals then and again!

It's only Steyn who bowls with quality & the rest r a crop of the craps!!!

  • frankzzzster on May 14, 2012, 5:23 GMT

Alright. DC has got Dhawan & White in top run getters this IPL. They both have scored over 1000 runs. DC batting is looking strong apart from Sanga's poor form. But, all the hardwork done by them is spoiled everytime by this hopeless bowling attack where steyn is a lone fighter. The future of Indian bowlers in the DC lineup is going nowhere, if they are gonna play like this. Their dream will always be a dream. In every IPL, its always Foreign Talent Exhibition from ppl like Gayle, Pollard, Warner, KP, Malinga...etc and very very few Indians show some talent. What next? These local players come again for next summer in IPL. Its high time for Indians to pause and think, whats going on here? Its supposed to be an Indian League!!! Every year BCCI finds one Indian talent, plays him & then bench him forever. But other cricket boards end up finding plenty and cement them permanent in their national teams. Just THINK BCCI. I know my comment is yet another blabber like every other Indian. Sad.

  • AjitDJ on May 14, 2012, 5:09 GMT

Dan Christian has the most important job in this DC team -- giving away runs and turning the match in the opponent's favor! Just take a look at how many times he has done this so far, and you'll agree with me too. Highly overrated all-rounder. I really hope DC transfer him to some other team next year.

Ok DC management, start planning for the next season from now itself. Should get better Indian fast bowlers for next year otherwise same story will repeat. DC should swap Duminy for RP Singh of Mumbai Indians. Both are former players of the other teams, so it shouldn't be a real issue. MI are looking for a quality left handed batsman in their batting lineup, while DC need a good Indian fast bowler to assist Steyn and Ishant. Both Duminy and RP are currently being under-utilized by their respective teams and hence the swap should benefit the players too along with the franchises.

  • on May 14, 2012, 3:35 GMT

This current edition of IPL has already thrown up some spectacular flop shows and Sangakkara must be way ahead of the rest of the pack in this regard. Add Yusuf Pathan and Ravindra Jadeja to the mix and the situation becomes quite intriguing. Much of the poor showing of the Pune Warriors has to do with Ganguly's horror run, both as Captain and as a premier batsman. Come to think of it, Mahela is also not exactly covering himself with glory so far. However, the remaining matches may, hopefully, change the picture somewhat.

Will DC do better by dropping Sanga(on his current form) and picking Theron for him? Given the form of Dhawan and White, they can afford the risk of dropping one bat.. DC would have been a bit better had they bid for one extra bowler in the reauction which took place this year.. Even a Parameshwaran would have made a difference..

Again one of the spectacular run -chases so characteristic of this tournament. The Punjab assault in the last 4 overs was devastating ,like a calculated attack of an army batallion.David Hussey gave a display of scientfic slogging while Gurkeerat displayed his iron nerves in the end.One of the best fought matches of this edition of the I.P.L.Such games show that even run rates of around 14-15 runs are chaseable in the last 4-5 overs.

  • cooldxve on May 14, 2012, 0:22 GMT

After DC lost to DD in such a manner, the selectors must have thought that as Steyn was not there so their bowling was weak. Now with Steyn also they couldn't defend 190. This proves that they need both Steyn and Theron in the squad. But they will never understand.

  • on May 13, 2012, 23:01 GMT

As Sanga said, DC is OK with batting but raw and inexperienced with bowling. This must be a record when a team scored 180 plus score so many times to lose. As a DC fan, it was a disappointment but not unexpected. I am used to it now and it no longer shocks me. Any team losing in a such a manner would be in shock. In fact, one of the DC players said during the innings break that even after scoring 190, they were not confident of victory. The next two matches are with even stronger teams. DC relied too much on Ishant Sharma and did not hesitate to trade in Ojha and Harmeet. They did not believe in keeping good bowlers as backup. They had a chance to bid for Vinay Kumar, Muralidharan and RP Singh and they didn't feel the need for it. Why did they buy Parthiv Patel is beyond me. They paid dearly for Ishant's absense. Other teams are smarter in keeping good players on bench. DC needs to invest in bowling but the dilema is where to find the talent. Good bowlers are already taken.

please DC bowlers give some respect to S dhawan and DT christian who have been scoring runs consistently at least by winning a game , and backdrop of DC is poor team selection , choose your best eleven and give them chances to play and can learn from their defaults

Deccan makes big scores and tries to lose it all in the last over. So, Deccan finally makes this strong statement, "We are gonna do things our own way. The faint hearted and the brave, better get used to it." Chennai Super Kings said no, and we did things their way. ;)

It seems like theres nothing Deccan can do to win a game. With good T20 bowlers like Steyn and Daniel Christian, its amazing they can't defend huge totals 180+

Deccan lost it again, the way Deccan likes to lose. We had our fun with the bat and showed we are not heartless by not hurting KXIP's chances.

MOM should have been joint, with this new face who did miracle today. Sanga has bad luck this year.
