Indian Premier League - 23rd match

Delhi Daredevils v Deccan Chargers

Delhi Daredevils won by 5 wickets (with 5 balls remaining)

Kumar Sangakkara will open the innings with Shikhar Dhawan, the same pair that added 94 in their previous game against the Rajasthan Royals. Irfan Pathan will bowl the first over with the new ball.

Toss: Kumar Sangakkara has won the toss and decided to bat first. Veer Pratap Singh, a pace bowler, comes into the playing 11, as does Parthiv Patel in place of Anand Rajan and Tanmay Mishra respectively.

Virender Sehwag, is looking cool in his shades, and says he would have fielded first anyway. No change to the Delhi side, so their overseas spinner Roelof van der Merwe continues to stay out.

3.25 pm: As compared to last season, Delhi have made a sensational start to the tournament. They have won three games of the four they have played, which is one victory short of how many they won all season last year! Deccan Chargers are the only team to have yet to open their account this tournament despite coming close on two occasions.

Hello and welcome to the 23rd IPL game this season, and the first of the day, between Delhi Daredevils and Deccan Chargers at Feroz Shah Kotla. Chennai Super Kings take on Pune Warriors in the evening game today. Suneer Chowdhary here and I will give you company through the two matches.

Toss in five minutes.

0.1

Pathan to Sangakkara, no run, short of good length, almost a half-tracker and outside the off-stump and Sangakkara pulls it to mid-on.

0.2

Pathan to Sangakkara, no run, pitched a little up this time, Sangakkara is brought on to the front-foot, drives into the covers for nothing.

0.4

Pathan to Sangakkara, no run, pulls back his length, but is outside the off-stump, Sanga tries to cut it away but goes to the point region.

0.5

Pathan to Sangakkara, 1 run, short ball and Sanga swivels and pulls it away. Would be a tad unhappy that it goes straight to fine-leg for only a single.

0.6

Pathan to Dhawan, 1 run, bends his knee and cuts the length ball through to third-man for a single. Both openers are off the mark now.

End of over 1 (2 runs) Deccan Chargers 2/0 (RR: 2.00)

1.2

Pietersen to Dhawan, no run, shorter and quicker and this time he tries to cut away, beats the outside edge of the bat.

1.4

Pietersen to Dhawan, FOUR, short and this time it is pulled away into the gap, the fielder at square-leg dived but failed to get any hand to it. Goes for the first four of the innings.

1.5

Pietersen to Dhawan, 3 runs, goes down the pitch and tries to smack it, but gets an inside-edge to the ball, fast outfield almost takes it to the fine-leg fence. The batsmen get three.

1.6

Pietersen to Sangakkara, no run, Sanga also shimmies down the pitch and tries to clear the in-field but fails in that endeavour as the ball goes straight to mid-on.

End of over 2 (7 runs) Deccan Chargers 9/0 (RR: 4.50)
KC Sangakkara    1* (6b)      KP Pietersen    1-0-7-0

Change in bowling, Morne Morkel now has the ball.

2.1

Morkel to Dhawan, 1 run, good length ball, outside the off-stump and driven to wide mid-off for a single, well fielded by KP, diving to his right.

2.2

Morkel to Sangakkara, OUT, top-edge and caught! That was on the middle-edge, Sanga was getting frustrated with all those hits to the fielders and he tried to half-pull, half-flick it away, only gets a leading edge and it soared high in the air before landing safely in the hands of the fielder. Well-caught by Nagar and Morkel has stuck immediately!

Pathan changes ends

3.1

Pathan to Patel, 1 run, short ball, probably even slower and he went for a full-bloodied pull, did not get it in the middle of the bat, falls short of the deep square-leg fielder.

3.2

Pathan to Dhawan, 1 run, outside the off-stump, moving away a little and cut away to the third-man fielder for a single.

3.3

Pathan to Patel, no run, outside the off-stump and keeps a little low, beats the bottom-edge of the batsman through to the keeper.

3.4

Pathan to Patel, FOUR, outside the off-stump, lot of width and Patel went for a cut, gets probably the toe of the bat and it races way to the third-man fence.

3.5

Pathan to Patel, FOUR, short and shot! Pathan has been bowling very short to Patel and this time the batsman gets it in the meaty area of the bat and gets it to the right of the deep square-leg fielder for a four.

3.6

Pathan to Patel, FOUR, third four in a row for Patel, outside the off-stump, pitched right up and the batsman throws his bat at it, goes to the point fence for a boundary. 14 from the over

End of over 4 (14 runs) Deccan Chargers 26/1 (RR: 6.50)
PA Patel    14* (6b 3x4)      IK Pathan    2-0-16-0
S Dhawan    11* (11b 1x4)      M Morkel    1-0-3-1

4.1

Morkel to Dhawan, 2 runs, Dhawan has been aggressive this season and he goes after Morkel, does not get in the middle and the ball lobs up over the bowler for a couple

4.2

Morkel to Dhawan, 1 run, pitched up by Morkel and driven to the coves, misfielded and the batsmen are through for a single

4.3

Morkel to Patel, 1 run, on the middle-stump and Patel drives towards the mid-on fielder and they rush off for a quickly-taken run.

4.4

Morkel to Dhawan, FOUR, short again, and this has been absolutely smashed to the fine-leg fence. The man was at deep square-leg and there was no stopping that ball racing away to the fence.

4.5

Morkel to Dhawan, 1 run, short of length and he wanted to play it away to the leg-side, gets a bit of an edge and the ball stops in front of the batsman, the non-striker calls him through for a run.

4.6

Morkel to Patel, no run, outside the off-stump and it is punched away to the mid-off region. Good shot for no run.

End of over 5 (9 runs) Deccan Chargers 35/1 (RR: 7.00)

Ajit Agarkar has come in to bowl now.

5.1

Agarkar to Dhawan, SIX, Oh ho! What a welcome! That is almost a gentle loosener one thought and it has been pummelled into the leg-side fence for a six!

5.2

Agarkar to Dhawan, 1 run, slower ball, inside-edge but they rush off for a run.

5.3

Agarkar to Patel, FOUR, on his pads and Patel was almost walking into it, and then flicks it away to the right of Umesh Yadav at deep square-leg, mis-fields at the fence. Should have been not more than two.

5.4

Agarkar to Patel, 2 runs, short ball again, this time slower and it has been pulled away to the left of Umesh, who dives this time and saves a couple.

5.5

Agarkar to Patel, 1 run, punched off the back-foot towards mid-off for a run.

5.6

Agarkar to Dhawan, 1 run, slower one and that is played towards the covers for a single. Brings up the 50 at the end of the sixth over.

End of over 6 (15 runs) Deccan Chargers 50/1 (RR: 8.33)

First three overs cost only 12 for the Daredevils. The next three have gone for 38.

6.1

6.1

Pietersen to Dhawan, 1 run, pitched up and hit inside-out over extra-cover for a single

6.2

Pietersen to Patel, 1 run, short this time and Patel rocks back and pulls it away for a single

6.3

Pietersen to Dhawan, no run, down the leg-side yet again and there is an appeal, umpire does not call it a wide because it had come off the trousers. Good call.

6.4

Pietersen to Dhawan, FOUR, down the pitch and he has gently scooped it over the bowler for a four! Excellent batting by the man in form!

6.5

Pietersen to Dhawan, 1 run, played away to the leg-side for a single.

6.6

Pietersen to Patel, 1 run, tries to sweep it away, KP appeals in hope, wicket-keeper rushes across to the leg-side to prevent the single but the batsmen are through for a run. Nine from that over.

End of over 7 (9 runs) Deccan Chargers 59/1 (RR: 8.42)

Time-Out time! They have recovered well from the early loss of captain Kumar Sangakkara. This looks like a good pitch.

7.1

Agarkar to Patel, FOUR, poor, poor bowling, short ball and Patel is quickly on to it, pulls it away to the leg-side for a four. The fine-leg was up and that was the worst form of delivery he could have bowled.

7.2

Agarkar to Patel, 1 run, pitched right up and driven to long-off for a single

7.3

Agarkar to Dhawan, FOUR, what was that! That almost looked like he was beaten off the slower one but the batsman was still able to pull it straight through mid-off for a four!

7.4

Agarkar to Dhawan, 1 run, punched it through the covers for a run. 10 already in the over.

7.5

Shamih Sikthy: "There should be two types of jersey for each franchise. One for home and other for away matches. By the way DD's colours are pretty similar to Barca."

They will not want to go the way Barca went last night.

8.1

Yadav to Patel, 1 run, flicked away to the deep square-leg for a single.

8.2

Yadav to Dhawan, FOUR, width afforded to the batsman, short outside the off-stump and the outside edge to that cut goes to the third-man for a four!

8.3

Yadav to Dhawan, 1 wide, slower one, it was really slow but too wide outside the off-stump and he will need to re-bowl it.

8.3

Yadav to Dhawan, 1 run, good length, outside the off-stump and punched away to the deep point.

8.4

Yadav to Patel, 2 runs, shorter and too close to the batsman to play a cut, he allows it to come on and dabs it to fine third-man.

8.5

Yadav to Patel, 1 run, another slower on the middle-stump and tapped away to the off-side for a single.

8.6

Yadav to Dhawan, 1 run, short from Yadav, pulled away to deep square-leg for a single

Umesh, not Yadav presumably, has an interesting point, "No Players from Andhra or Hyderabad in DC team. Only Viru and Nagar from Delhi playing in DD. BCCI should do something to include more local players in the playing 11."

Shahbaz Nadeem comes on now. He triggered the Mumbai collapse last game.

9.1

Nadeem to Dhawan, OUT, first ball and he has a wicket! Straighter one from Nadeem and the batsman tried to go for the reverse sweep, he missed it and that one seemed to be crashing straight into the stumps.

S Dhawan lbw b Nadeem 44 (40m 29b 5x4 1x6) SR: 151.72

9.2

Nadeem to Christian, no run, on the middle-stump, the batsman comes out on to the front foot but defended back.

9.3

Ravi: "Dhawan, Uthappa, Rahane - all openers Mumbai Indians let go off. They are all doing exceptionally well and MI is struggling for a decent opener."

To be fair, Uthappa wasn't in the best of forms when they let him go, but the other two were a surprise I agree.

10.1

Yadav to Christian, 1 wide, down the leg-side, missing his line yet again, a wide called.

10.1

Yadav to Christian, 1 run, on his pads and Christian drives it to the long-on for a single.

10.2

Yadav to Patel, SIX, short and six! What a shot! He was going down the pitch and the bowler shortened his length and yet, the batsman smacks it over mid-wicket for a six!

10.3

Yadav to Patel, 1 run, short of length and he punches it to long-on for a single.

10.4

Yadav to Christian, FOUR, cut away off the back-foot, it was not too wide from the bowler and Christian was able to unleash the cut well!

10.5

Yadav to Christian, 1 run, on the off-stump and driven off the back-foot for a single.

10.6

Yadav to Patel, (no ball) 1 run, that is caught at third-man but the umpires are consulting for the waist-height no-ball. And yes, that is easily above the waist-height of the diminutive Parthiv Patel! Sometimes it pays to not be too tall!

Gareth: "@Umesh. That's one thing the BBL got right. With no auction, it meant that players were bought individually. This allowed players to have a say in who they played for. For instance, Katich, who has played Shield cricket for NSW over the last decade, struck a deal with the Perth side to get back to his club roots."

10.6

@Shamih: Away jerseys are used in football so that players can easily spot thier team mates while running. However in cricket you dont see that happening and no point of having away jerseys unless the teams want to show more glamour."

11.2

Nadeem to Patel, 1 run, Dropped! On the pads of Patel, who sweeps away to the leg-side and Pietersen should have caught it, he seems to have lost it in the sun and misses on getting the ball on the full!

11.3

Nadeem to Christian, 1 run, drives it to long-on for a single.

11.4

Nadeem to Patel, 1 run, shorter one and he tries to pull it away, no power in the stroke.

11.5

Nadeem to Christian, 1 run, on his pads and that is flicked away to the leg-side for a single

11.6

Nadeem to Patel, OUT, swept and out, caught! He was missed off the previous such stroke no such luck this time. Nadeem has his second wicket as Patel's sweep has been well caught at deep square-leg by the fielder, who judged it rather well at the fence. And no problems with the sun either.

More replies to Umesh, Rahul: "reply to umesh's point : Since it is the IPL, The teams are considered as Clubs, its not the Ranji Trophy. Hence there are no players from the areas they represent. Just like in the EPL you will seldom find players playing at clubs like Man Utd and Chelsea from the same part. Infact Arsenal at one point had no players from England in their team."

12.5

Pathan to Christian, no run, down the leg-side and it touches the pad through to the wicket-keeper.

12.6

"JP Duminy is a batsman good enough to shine alongside AB de Villiers and Jacques Kallis in the South African limited overs middle order. Dan Christian bats at 7 for Australia, just above the bowlers. So why, why, why, does Deccan send Christian in at 4?!"

By that rationale, Patel rarely makes it to the playing 11 of the Indian team, he should not be batting at all before 8 or 9, Graeme?

Agarkar to Chipli, no run, another slower one and that beats the bat yet again! He has strung together a couple of dots here.

18.6

Agarkar to Chipli, FOUR, and he is back to conceding boundaries! Slower again but shorter too and he has been spanked over his own head for a four! 16 from that over brings parity back to the proceedings.

End of over 19 (16 runs) Deccan Chargers 151/7 (RR: 7.94)
B Chipli    24* (16b 3x4 1x6)      AB Agarkar    3-0-42-0
A Mishra    2* (2b)      M Morkel    3-0-17-3

19.1

Morkel to Mishra, 1 run, drilled down to the mid-off fielder who had enough time to have two shies at the stumps, but missed the non-striker's stumps, Mishra was nowhere close to the crease.

19.2

Morkel to Chipli, 1 run, full-toss and he has bludgeoned it to long-on for a single.

Neil Mulligan: "Christian is being used badly. He is scratching around with a poor strike rate at the top of the order when he should be used as lower order muscle and playing without fear."

19.3

Morkel to Mishra, no run, slower, shorter, Mishra almost was waiting for a quick bouncer and he was woefully short of getting any bat to the ball.

19.4

Morkel to Mishra, 2 runs, on his pads, pitched right up and flicked away to the deep square-leg boundary. That seemed like it was going into the boundary but Taylor did well to run across and save a couple.

19.5

Morkel to Mishra, 1 run, OUT, out, run-out! Poor running from Mishra there, that was an easy two. Short from Morkel, cut away but loops in the air, it was away from the fielder and should have been two. The batsman was busy looking at whether the fielder was going to catch it and he missed coming back quickly for the second. Woefully short of the crease.

A Mishra run out 6 (9m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

19.6

Morkel to Ankit Sharma, 1 run, shorter one from Morkel, played it away to mid-off for a single. Only 56 runs from the last nine overs, for the loss of six wickets!

Delhi will be happy to restrict Deccan to only 157 in their 20 overs, after 175 looked gettable at one stage. 40s from Shikhar Dhawan and Parthiv Patel helped the Chargers but a middle-order collapse left them pretty short of what they would have expected. In fact, but for a 16-run over from Ajit Agarkar, the Chargers would got to much lower than this.

A few Ajit Agarkar fans e-mailing in to round off the first innings: Praveen, before that Agarkar over, "DC badly need an over or two from Agarkar!"

Cassandra: "Did we just witness the last over from Agarkar, ever?" We say that every year, don't we?

Back in 10 after the break.

End of over 20 (6 runs) Deccan Chargers 157/8
Ankit Sharma    1* (1b)      M Morkel    4-0-23-3
B Chipli    25* (17b 3x4 1x6)      AB Agarkar    3-0-42-0
