Rajasthan Royals v Royal Challengers Bangalore, IPL 2013, Jaipur April 29, 2013

Watson, Samson keep Royals' citadel intact

62

Rajasthan Royals 173 for 6 (Samson 63, Watson 41) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore 171 for 6 (Gayle 34, Watson 3-22) by 4 wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

For the second time this season, Rajasthan Royals promoted a wicketkeeper to No. 3, and stunned the opposition to set up a win. Chasing 172, with Shane Watson, Brad Hodge and Owais Shah yet to bat, Kerala's 18-year-old Sanju Samson scored 63 off 41, leaving Royals 56 to get off 34 balls, which they chased, but not without the mandatory inexplicable drama that is the IPL's USP. Watson, who left the chase all but finished, had been instrumental in keeping Royal Challengers, who have now lost all their four away matches, down with the wickets of Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli among his three.

The game began with Royals presenting Gayle spin when hostile short bowling has only managed to trouble him. Gayle raced away, but Watson got him for 34 off 16 with an innocuous-looking delivery angling away from him. From 44 for 1 in four overs, Royal Challengers went without a boundary for 6.1 overs. The run rate fell, and when AB de Villiers and Kohli tried to correct it, they both holed out.

With the innings not going anywhere, R Vinay Kumar gave them a fighting target with three sixes of James Faulkner in the final over, two of those off slower balls. Faulkner had had a good birthday until then with two catches a run-out. Vinay would try to turn the game around in the last over of the next innings too, but that's for later.

In the chase, Royals stayed with their plan of using Watson lower down the order. Rahul Dravid and Ajinkya Rahane opened, and got them off to a swift enough start, but it was Samson who pinched Royal Challengers. There might have been the odd slog, but a major part of the innings relied on cricketing shots. The standout was successive sixes over extra cover to welcome Murali Kartik, who would have hoped he had not recovered from his illness in time for this match.

Those sixes took Royals to 60 for 2 in 7.2 overs, and the chase was on its way. Watson played the second fiddle while Samson went at it, reaching 25 off 21 by the time Samson fell. Watson and Hodge went about with the pursuit coolly until Hodge seemed to have killed off the chase with two sixes off Ravi Rampaul in the 18th over. If you thought 18 off 15 was the done thing, though, you haven't watched enough of IPL.

Watson top-edged RP Singh in the next over, but six off six was easy enough. However, Hodge tried to finish it off in one hit, and was bowled to leave five to get off four. Owais Shah then managed to get run out at the non-danger end, and we were smack in the middle of an IPL implosion. Back to the same last-over characters: Vinay and Faulkner.

Faulkner took the single, and then Stuart Binny pulled a four to beat the team that carries his home city's name.

Way to go RR. What an all-rounder Watto is: the perfect overseas player you would want in your team; everytime, everygame. What an inning by Sanju. Great going lad! The great thinker that Dravid is, he is showing what an inspirational captain he is. Everybody looks up to him, domestic and overseas players alike. Love the team effort of RR. They seem to be peaking at the right time. The team looks really really deep now. Horses for courses! Halla Bol Halla Bol......

Too many big stars and a bad coach were the primary reasons why Dravid couldn't be as good a captain as Dhoni or Ganguly. But he is proving to be a taskmaster everytime he comes onto the field. Really wish they can win another 4 matches and make it to the Top 4. Though RR usually falter in the second half of the tournament and end up at 5th or 6th always, it will stil lbe very painful to see them not make it to the top 4 this time...

One of the best wins for RR.. Were under pressure Chasing such a good target but done everything perfectly all right. Just wanted to see face of critics who said Dravid is not a good caption. He encourages the young players and the thing that i love about RR is the way they play as a unit.

They are familiar with the strengths and weakness and Dravid has mar shelled his troops very well like Bringing watson in to bowling...Samson 1st down.. Sreesanth bowled really well except his first over [as no can cant bowl well when Gayle is in destruction mode]

Would like to see Samson opening with Dravid and Rahane down the order as we need good start and some one like Rahane to anchor the innings in the middle.

It appears Dravid is the only player in the world whose "legendness" points are increasing after retirement. Greg Chappel always thought very highly of Dravid as a captain. Nobody else gave a damn to what he thought but Dravid is proving that he indeed was a great captain then and continuing to be so even now. Poor Dravid, was caught between the popular Sachin and an aggressive Dada. He is one player who practices what he preaches and youngsters don't need to look anywhere else to see the result, it is right there in front in the form of Dravid.

This game has created a larger pool than we though we had... What I would like to see is the Indian T20 team take on Bisla, Tendulkar, Dravid, Binny, Dinesh Karthik, Mishra, Dhawan Kulkarni, Harmeet, Rahul Sharma, Awana along with the other good indian lads in the IPL... Sure would be a real humdinger!

  • Qa_ankit on April 30, 2013, 5:09 GMT

Salute Dravid. Well truly speaking then even i was shocked to see Samson instead of Watty. But boy, what a move. Great win. And as per Watty, well i am not worried about his man of the matches award in last three matches until our team wins. Nor he will be concerned about that. Yes rahane can be asked to play freely. Those 3-4 extra balls could have made the difference. A lot difference. But still with Hodhe and Owis in side, it was pritty relax bunch. Even with 3 down, 56 needed of 38 odd balls, it was pritty safe i thought. Bcz RR had Binny, Hodge, Shah, Faulkner likes. So again pritty nicely played match though made tough in the end. Chalta Hai.. :) For RCB, man you have to win matches outside. Comeon guys. I feel onething with RCB. 70% it depends heavily on Gayle-Kohli. They can't rely on them evertime. I didn't see even a single match even in their home soil, when both has not performed and they have won. But again, Great to see champ and leader like dravid. He is not a dictator

  • IndiaGoats on April 30, 2013, 3:13 GMT

To quote Michael Jordan "Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships".Dravid is demonstrating it through his captaincy. Young ambassadors of cricket please learn from him.

  • Romenevans on April 30, 2013, 3:03 GMT

Rahane needs to be told that he needs to start performing or perish. He waste the whole over and then gets out. Sachin Baby is already waiting on bench and i rate him way above Rahene. Sachin baby needs to come in for Rahane if he isn't performing.

  • Bilbo on April 30, 2013, 0:23 GMT

You have to feel a bit sorry for Shane Watson. A century and no man-of-the-match, then a 90+ and no man-of-the-match, now 3-for-nothing plus more vital runs and no man-of-the-match. Tough call this last one: what more does he need to do?

  • nilb on April 29, 2013, 23:47 GMT

Looks like with good performances by Watson the chance of seeing Kusal Perera in RR team 0 this season. Yeah well, the guy will always impress in the No 1 T20 team in the world.

  • on April 29, 2013, 22:11 GMT

I think RCB should shuffle some players. Try Daniel Vettori- canny spinner, experienced. RP Singh has been inconsistent and Pankaj Singh should be now given a chance. As far as foreign players are concerned, Gayle and AB are sure. Toss up can be between Moises/Rampaul/Vettori depending on pitches. RCB should win this IPL, looking at the number of impact players they have. For todays match, I hope Samson goes a long way and not just 1 year wonder as many before. But looking at the awesome cricketing shots he played, he looks good for the long run. good luck to Rajasthan Royals. for the first time in 6 IPLs I am actually liking their team. though main reason is Dravid- my idol. My four teams for playoffs- CSK, RCB, RR, MI/KXIP. I am from Punjab and seeing KXIP just get a feeling they will win the tight matches and advance.

  • mridulDeka on April 29, 2013, 21:51 GMT

@PFEL:watto didnt open because he was sheilded by RR against new ball.also his form was good,so Dravid wanted to use him till end so that he can be right there till victory.Dravid knew it will be a last over finish so they want player of his calibure to stay till end.it was a nice strategy...

  • usernames on April 29, 2013, 21:28 GMT

RR is the moneyball moment of the IPL. Excellent picks; not the biggest names but boy, do they pack a punch as a unit! We talk of firepower and stability -- they have Watto, Shah, Binny, et al. for the firepower and Dravid (!!!) and Rahane for the stability. Pretty canny bowling attack, too--would love to see them in the playoffs!

  • SidsIPLTeam on April 29, 2013, 21:10 GMT

RCB's problems remain the same - their bowling. They bought so many fast bowlers, but didn't buy any impact bowlers with real pace like a Nannes/Morris. I believe they've got to sacrifice the 3rd overseas batsman/all-rounder & get more balance into the team.

    My XI would be -

    1. A.Mukund - for a steady start 2. Gayle 3. Kohli 4. AB 5. S.Tiwary 6. A.Karthik 7. Daniel Vettori/Ravi Rampaul 8. Vinay Kumar 9. Z.Khan - when fit/M.Karthik/Mithun/Aravind, 10. Unadkat 11. Muralitharan

Surprised to see Dan not getting a game yet. He's difficult to hit out of the park and a very capable lower-order batsman. RP should be dropped, as he is not accurate & keeps bowling length balls or short without having the requisite pace to hurry batsmen.

Unless changes are made to increase the bowling depth, RCB will keep having problems whenever Gayle doesn't fire or they don't get like more than 180-190 runs, which might be sufficient cushion; but still not safe always.

  • PFEL on April 29, 2013, 20:54 GMT

Well Played RR Planing and stratergising is a part of the game and for your plan to come out well there is that person who excecutes the plans out in the middle superb effort by samson the 2 sixes of murli kartik was special indeed. A very fine example of capitalising on the oppurtunity provided was on display today.Brilliant start provided at the top by captain dravid and to add on some very bad short bowling by RCB.Watson asusaul was amazing Amazing finish by Hodge. All in all a superb team effort. This team is quitely making its way up and i am sure will be one of the top 4 teams. CSK MI RR & RCB it will be.

  • janardhan1990 on April 29, 2013, 20:28 GMT

it was a very good game of cricket difference between the two teams was very clearly a big partnership in between overs 7-15 RCB didnt do it but managed to scrape thru 171 but RR did it with watson and samson to set the chase up.well played RR. Caution RCB: strenghten your middle order batting and try different bowlers you can still afford to experiment and lose a match or two. My RCB Team:Gayle,Pujara,Virat,Ab,Daniel Christian,Moises Henreques,Saurab Tiwari,Vinay Kumar,Ravi Rampaul,Jaidev Unadkat, Harshal Patel RCB can also try Pankaj Singh for a match or 2. If dilshan can be given 5 matches i feel daniel christian and moises henreques need to be given chances to prove their worth.

I fail to understand why people criticize Dravid's decisions to send youngsters ahead of Watson, Hodge etc. If anything Dravid is the best captain in this IPL because he believes in his young guns and always backs them to come good. I think Dhoni should learn from Dravid and send Bravo//Morris at No.3 and 4 respectively, give them some time at the pitch, what if Hussey and Dhoni fail the same day? Give everyone a chance like Dravid does. This is also directed to Gambhir and other IPL teams, learn from Dravid.

  • on April 29, 2013, 16:08 GMT

It doesn't say a lot about RCB's bowling and the confidence their captain has in it when he believes that a score of 170+ is not enough to defend comfortably. Kohli has reason to be skeptical though, as he has no real death bowlers at his disposal. Vinay Kumar is his only real threat and he isn't a beacon of consistency. RP and Rampaul have been consistently bad towards the end of the innings. Might be a good idea to try Moises Henriques towards the end, today he was the only bowler not leaking runs at 10 an over.

  • Narabavi on April 29, 2013, 15:45 GMT

RCB is very much similar to Team India. Champions only at home.If this continues, they will struggle to make into the playoffs. Luckely they have another game against Pune.

  • TeamRocker on April 29, 2013, 15:38 GMT

Terrific from RR. Good work chasing a big target, they looked like getting it throughout. S.Samson looks like a class act, I would pick him over Yagnik most of the time. Well played to Watto, Hodge and even Vinay Kumar. His hitting in the last over came as a real shock to RR, and gave RCB some much needed momentum. Faulkner had a bad day, but give him some time. He'll bounce back. Rampaul should bowl out by the 12th or 13th over and leave the finishing work to Singh and Kumar. Rahane looks woefully out of form, and maybe they should give Perera a go if Rahane keeps failing (Owais Shah replaced with S.Baby), if neither can perform.

  • Ross_the_Boss on April 29, 2013, 15:29 GMT

RR paced the innings beautifully...were always confident with Hodge and Shah yet to come in. Went in with the extra batsman in Shah (and only 5 bowlers) to cope with the possibility of chasing 180+. However, against KKR playing away on a slow low wicket, they might need an extra spinner in Hogg instead of Shah. Since Rahul is anchoring the chase and giving a stand to a fast scorer, Rahane needs to be given the license to score at a faster clip.

  • on April 29, 2013, 14:51 GMT

In one of my earlier comments, I had mentioned about Sanju Samson being an outstanding cricketer from the junior levels, right from under-13s and he has the ability and the talent to don the India colors in future provided he is given enough opportunities. There are lots of other promising youngsers from Kerala who are denied a chance in playing in the IPL because of want of takers. I think Samson has shown them the way. Good luck to him and the other aspiring cricketers from Kerala.

  • Yasin123Patel on April 29, 2013, 14:46 GMT

wher is hodge haters. He did earlier and also did very well today. He better deserve his place ahead of kushal. For watto, he is a class. He prove his worth by take the wicket of gayle and kohli at crucial time. He is a brilliant allrounder. For faulkner, today isnt his day. But he can comeback. He did very good and enough telented to play haul IPL. BTW sahju play really well. Its a real team effort.

  • Romenevans on April 29, 2013, 14:44 GMT

Perfect team! Way to go RR, the Chelsea of IPL. Even though it was a perfect win, but in the next match against KKR we can get Kushal Parera in for Owais Shah and give him the free license to kill at the top. Kolkata will be slow low and Owais will be hopeless there. Or else Get Hogg in, he will be unplayable there with his wrong ones on that slow and turning track.

  • on April 29, 2013, 14:41 GMT

Fort Rajastan--UNBREACHED! The Flag Flies High in the GREAT WALL's Fort. Brilliant captaincy and show of talent from youngsters did it for RR! Now status of teams like SRH look bothersome, with RR and MI coming back into the game. CSK sit pretty at top and deservingly so. As for RCB, Winning away games is becoming a paranoia and Punjab will test Kohli and Co in the next away game as well!

  • Jay.Raj on April 29, 2013, 14:35 GMT

Its funny how so many people wanted Watson to be dropped after couple of failures and he is now the best player in IPL after Gayle

  • dark.angel on April 29, 2013, 14:29 GMT

RR did win finally. Simlar to KKR 's decision a couple of days back, this one decision also gave a close match.

  • sweetspot on April 29, 2013, 14:25 GMT

No problem with RCB's scoreline in the end, but Kohli still thought they were 10-15 short? Crazy! If their bowling attack cannot defend 170, it is probably because of weak fielding, perhaps? Maybe not obvious with all the show of energy, but you have to hide people like RP Singh and Gayle, and on the run, even Murali Karthik.

  • Romenevans on April 29, 2013, 14:24 GMT

Samson & Watson! Sounds like one hell of a combination. Sanju you beauty! I was surprised why he wasn't playing after his first game in which he helped the team to win. Nevermind, This guy will play for India. Mark my words. Still a baby, long way to go, but seems like he has a calm head on his shoulder. Big roar for RR, we will be in the playoffs. Halla Bol! Fans are right behind you! Go Go Go RR!

  • look_nah on April 29, 2013, 14:23 GMT

When will Kholi learn that Rampaul sucks with the bat and is a stinker with the ball during crunch time? Rampaul should hang his head in shame for his inability to be a thinking bowler who mixes it up at the end rather than running in and bowling hard straight length balls.

The RCB has a massive problem with both RP Singh and Rampaul playing in the same game because of the simple fact that at any time either or both of them could hand the game to the opposition.

  • Shaan99 on April 29, 2013, 14:18 GMT

Banglore have today's match due to their over confidence... And too much depending upon gayle.... Imagine if today gayle out for 00 then think what be the score for RCB

And here another superb knock by indian uncapped wicket batsman... Last Day Bisla and today Sampson

Great move by RCB to drop dilshan, Henriques not only performed better than him with the bat but also with the ball!!

Wow, Watson again showed his class with both bat and ball, i wonder where his haters are right now!!

I feel that RR did a mistake by winning the toss n opted to bowl. RR have a good batting lineup today n they should have batted first n put a target of 180+ so that Gayle will out easily becoz of pressure on him. As RCB is batting first, now Gayle is free to play his usual game. Good luck RR

I think this is the best team combination for RR till now, quite balanced and deep batting just need 1 bowler who can replace sreesanth as he is damn unpredictable and could be game ending for RR any given day.

I think Samson is one of the youngest player in ipl to score fifty or fastest fifty
