Gayle 175* (66b), RCB win by 130

267

Royal Challengers Bangalore 263 for 5 (Gayle 175*) beat Pune Warriors 133 (Smith 41, Gayle 2-5) by 130 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Chris Gayle can shatter dreams. Ask Ishwar Pandey, the highest wicket-taker in this year's Ranji Trophy, who got smashed for 21 in his first over this IPL. Ask Mitchell Marsh, whose decent run with the ball this tournament was blown out of his memory, with his first over going for 28. Ask Aaron Finch, the third captain for Pune Warriors this season, who bowled an over hoping to restrict Gayle but didn't bowl again after being blasted for 29. Ask Ali Murtaza, a specialist left-arm spinner thrown into the deep end in his first game this season, only to be hammered for 45 in two overs.

The fastest hundred in T20 history was built on the misery of others, most notably a struggling franchise whose owners - they spent US$370 million to buy it - watched shell-shocked at their team's bowlers being taken apart with a ruthlessness only a game of Cricket '97 powered with cheat codes could have matched. After Gayle's onslaught, there was only going to be one result, and further confirmation of that arrived when four wickets fell inside the first six overs of the Warriors chase. Their defeat was the second-biggest in terms of runs in the IPL's six seasons.

The destruction inflicted on the Warriors bowlers broke a series of records. Gayle smashed the fastest century in the format, brought off 30 balls; made the highest individual T20 score (175 not out); struck the most sixes by a batsman in a T20 innings (17); helped Royal Challengers Bangalore hit the most sixes for a team in a T20 innings (21) and reach the highest total in T20 cricket (263).

The helplessness of the Warriors players was writ large on their faces. Luke Wright smiled with trepidation when Virat Kohli took a single to give Gayle the strike off his bowling, Yuvraj just shook his head as he watched one ball after another sail over the boundary rope and pretended to snatch Gayle's bat at the end of the innings as he went over to congratulate him.

The only interruption to Gayle's effort was a 33-minute rain interval. He had warmed up before that with two boundaries off Pandey, and proceeded to smack him for three more in the same over after the rain relented. Unlike some of his innings this season where he was relatively restrained at the start, he came out prepared to attack from the outset today. His previous innings, against Rajasthan Royals, was an unbeaten 49 off 44 balls during which he batted 17.5 overs.

It helped Gayle that Warriors bowled to him on a length, allowing him to hit through the line and straight, with minimum effort that masked the immense power behind his strokes that cleared the boundary with ease. Only one boundary out of the 30 to his name qualified as a mis-hit, an outside edge past short third man. At least two shots cleared the roof, the shot that brought up his century hit it and rebounded back into the lower tiers.

That Gayle was not going to hold himself back, having taken 29 off the fifth over from Marsh, was evident in his approach to spin when Murtaza was brought on in the seventh over. Gayle decided to target the spinner with the turn, slog-sweeping and then smashing him flat for two sixes, then making Finch regret the move to bring himself on, hammering him for four sixes, all on the on-side. A rare yorker outside off from Ashok Dinda that Gayle missed was perhaps the only moral victory he afforded Warriors before reaching his century, a landmark he celebrated with a punch of the gloves then kneeling down and raising his arms.

Murtaza may just have felt he could slip in a relatively quiet over when Gayle had mellowed down, somewhat, after reaching his ton, but Gayle demolished those thoughts. He punished Murtaza for three more sixes in a 28-run over, as Royal Challengers began another phase of domination in their innings after a moment's breather - the last six overs produced 85 runs.

Gayle's innings was supported ably by opener Tillakaratne Dilshan, who was part of a 167-run opening stand, an IPL record, during which he only made 33. He quickly ceded floor to Gayle and played some attractive, text-book shots through point and down the ground. Unlike Dilshan at the start, AB de Villiers was the dominant partner in Warriors' ruin at the death, thrashing 31 in just eight balls in a stand worth 44.

Each played their role in helping Gayle guide the innings, which he did with a big smile, good-hearted banter with the Warriors fielders during the carnage, and an animated reaction when he reached his century. He signed off in the match with a gangnam style gig at picking up two wickets in the only over he bowled - all a contrast to the man who made his first international appearance against India in Toronto in 1999, when it seemed hard to imagine a debutant as shy as him would one day become one of the most colourful characters on a cricket field.

All I could say when watching the match was that it was ridiculous!tere were no other words to describe Gayle's innings..absolutely superb and I was honoured to have seen it(even if it was only on the tv).. I loved the banner in the stands that said something like"when Gayle bats the fielders are spectators and the spectators are the fielders"

The name of the venue should be changed to Ben Gayle Aru stadium to honour the greatest innings played by a batsman in the modern era.It was indeed the finest and class batting of Chris Gayle which set the grounds alight during this one sided match.Obviously changing captains and teams so often did not make an impact as far as the Pune Warriors were concerned. Congrats Chris Gayle for your fantastic batting display which will certainly be unmatched for a long time.

UNBELIEVABLE HITTING! When all the players were congratulating him after his innings, it was like the match had ended, literally the match ended after RCB's innings; Pune needed at least two Gayle in their team to chase that down. I consider myself lucky to watch his innings. If Dilshan for some peculiar reason didn't fail to rotate strike, Gayle could have gotten the first ever T20 double hundred.

Guys, Do you Know Why Gayle didn't click for KKR and performing well for RCB? Why Y.Pathan Did so well for Rajastan royals and not performing for KKR?

Out of all the matches in the tournament 50% matches are played at Home ground. So players total performance in the tournament basically(50%) depends on how home ground is supportive for the player.

KKR (kolkatta) ground is known as slow track and players like Pathan and Gayle do not enjoy playing on slow track.

Franchise owner be careful during auction buy a player who can perform well on your home ground, not by celebrity factor.

I wish Gayle will be retained in RCB squad, Chinnaswamy stadium is perfect form him.

Although I watched the game in awe, I must admit that Pune Warriors had their team composition completely messed up. If you look at the history as to how Gayle has been dismissed, he is vulnerable (if you can call it that!!) against OFF SPIN bowling. However, the Pue team did not have an off spinner in their side. If they had one, maybe, just maybe, they could have done better against the GAYLE-STORM!!

@Roshanth Gardiarachchi : I have just googled for the exact fact and it seems that it was a district league match. Even though that match was of 20 overs but it doesn't get counted into actual Twenty20 which consists of leagues and international matches that get recorded.

  • Thyagu5432 on April 24, 2013, 5:05 GMT

Normally when you have such hitting, you will believe it would have been ultimate entertainment. But honestly, it was exactly opposite to that. Absolute boring, it appeared like some street cricket team bowling to an international team. IPL governing council has to do something about this otherwise the belief that IPL is a third grade tournament involving ordinary bowlers will be proved beyond doubt. The last time Gayle scored so many runs was in last IPL, he played scores of international matches in between and had'nt score anything worthwhile in all those matches and come IPL he again goes berserk. In any case, this was a forgettable match including Gayle's innings.

After that tsunami nothing to say. Now we also part of historywho witnessed the tsunami. The generations of 70s and 80s watch Sir VIV Richards batting live but we were not blessed to watch him live therefore have sorrry feelings. Similarly, in the next 30/40 years, the generation will regret to know that they did,t watch Gyle batting live. Congratulate to all present cricket lovers who watch Gyle batting like I did. We all would told our grand kids how much we were excited to see Gyle bat. So we also become history who watch him live in 30 ball 100, 17 sixes, 119 Meeter six, highest team total and above all celebration of Great Man.

  • humi_cric on April 24, 2013, 4:55 GMT

Superb display of power hitting but I think, like Yusuf Pathan, Gayle also have trouble playing short pitch ball coming to chest height with over 140kph. So interested to watch him playing against Morkel and M. Irfan in Champions trophy. I don't know in which franchise Steyn and Morkel are, but have he scored against these two quality bowlers?

Awesome hitting by gayle - In cricket its really difficult to hit 175 of 66 even if all bowlers throwed the ball to the batsman and asked him to hit it. But how did he made this moment - Wow good to see that. I would have enjoyed more if it was a indian youngster playing half the quality of the game which he has displayed. There was no fight from the bowlers - I would have loved a contest atleast one over where they controlled the thunder hitter gayle.but there was nothing to see between the bat and ball - it was all bat dominating and ball flying out of ground . But yesterday PWI where spineless they should have had rahul sharma in the side at-least. But not taking any credit from RCB it was a smashing victory every other team in IPL has an Eye on RCB and ever team will plan big for gayle from now on. From now on RCB will have a tight plan against there players - lets hope how it turns out to be.

From the first ball Warriors deserved the result or even before a ball was bowled. The team management in an idiotic way filled the XI with mediocre seamers who can hardly bowl the type that Gayle liked. When you drop the likes of Ajantha Mendis for some up and down bowlers, keep tinkering with the captaincy then you get this result, because you reap what you sow. Stop tinkering with captaincy, and making idiotic changes. Instead look to psychographics of each player work out your team SWOT and each match SWOT and then fight your case at the match. When you have people with little knowledge about human behavior manning top positions you get this type of results

  • himanshu.team on April 24, 2013, 3:59 GMT

To all those who are saying Gayle is only a T-20 bully, please check his test records and stats. He is a genuinely talented and gifted batsman. Similarly, if Buvi could give Gayle a single and bowl tight to Dilshan, why were the other bowlers unable to do so? How come Luke Wright bowl economically? Besides the 8 overs bolwed by these two, remaining 12 overs produced 214 runs! Give credit where it is due: Gayle, Bhuvi, Luke and AB played extremely well. All of them deserve kudos, despite the fact that two of them were on the losing side.

  • BDforever on April 24, 2013, 3:57 GMT

I would not wonder if Gayle gets a double ton in the next match. When poor Indian bowlers are around anything is possible in favor of batsmen.

I am disappointed with Gayle's batting. He wasted 15 dot balls, and hence, could score only 175 runs in 66 balls. He missed 15 Sixers! If t his was against Delhi Dare devils, even Viv Richards would have appreciated, remembering his golden days.Gayle, should repeat this in Semi-final and FINAL.

Want to put some perspective on Bhuvaneshwar Kumar's bowling figures and why it looks so good. Kumar opened the bowling and Gayle took a single of the 3rd ball. Thereafter, Kumar bowled the next 15 balls to Dilshan who was struggling to middle the ball and had a strike rate of 50 initially. B. Kumar came back to finish his quota and bowled another 4 balls to Gayle in the 18th over by when I presume Gayle had eased off a bit. So B.Kumar's bowling figures look great but thats because he mostly bowled to Dilshan.

  • on April 24, 2013, 1:19 GMT

Superb innings by Gayle, once in a life time one could bat like that. Unbelievable. But, I would say poor Decisions by PWI contributed. First of I couldn't believe their decision to include Murtaza in the team. Even a kid knows Bangalore is not spin friendly wicket and when the opposition has a number of hard-hitting and spin-killers, a poor decision to include him. Next, the Captain handed over the ball to inexperienced Ishwar Pandey, poor man had no idea what to do to Gayle. This is where, again the Team management showed their poor skills. They had to play Richardson and asked him to target Gayle. I feel sorry for the Owners.

  • Al_Bundy1 on April 24, 2013, 0:50 GMT

What an innings. Gayle reminds me of Sir Vivian Richards. When it comes to T20, Gayle is the king. Tendulkar and Ponting might be great in Tests and ODI, but in T20 they are mere jesters in King Gayle's court.

@talkcric says that IPL needs some reorganisation. More teams and a spend limit for the teams. It will be Chennai and Bangalore in the final and it looked like that from before the start if IPL6.

It is a poorer product cause the best English players are being let down by the England cricket board, they need to be here like the top players from the other test nations.

Will Dhoni make the next few games? Looked like a nasty over rotation and could be a badly torn side or stomach muscle

  • Ravs1504 on April 23, 2013, 23:17 GMT

It was awsome hitting but hey it turned the match into a boring one sided affair.. one should also look at the pune bowlers..barring luke/kumar..they kept on feeding on length balls one after the other.. majority bowled with intention of " i dont' want to be hit for six" rather than " i want to get your wicket".. Yes he was hitting the ball really well and made pune's bowlers looks like pedestrians but i dont' think Gayle would have hit such runs against good bowling attack..

  • V-Man_ on April 23, 2013, 22:55 GMT

The writer is so true. This sort of performance only can be seem in the cricket video games (Stick cricket anyone). Now we cant say those video games don't reflect real cricket. Lol.

  • Shan156 on April 23, 2013, 22:54 GMT

Gayle is a monster. PW bowlers may need to pay a visit to a psychologist. That was the mother of all maulings.

  • Chris_P on April 23, 2013, 22:51 GMT

@pjkaka 85 metres? He wouldn't have cleared the MCG, Gabba, the WACA or straight Adelaide test match grounds for starters. The grounds are markedly smaller in India, face facts. The same Chris Gayle failed miserably in the BBL, & I mean miserably. Let's call it for what it was, a basher whose eye was in, hitting mediocre bowling on a flat track on a small ground. Great entertainment, but very, very ordinary bowling. I'll even go as far to say they won't win the IPL either, maybe not even make the playoffs, his teams have a history of failing.

  • on April 23, 2013, 22:34 GMT

A great entertaining innings by the big man

  • kc69 on April 23, 2013, 22:13 GMT

I guess after watching todays batting rather than being happy i pity on bowlers who are about to bowl to Chris Gayle in upcoming match(need to work on some serious strategy or out-of-box ideas like what Sunrisers did).

  • Rally_Windies on April 23, 2013, 21:33 GMT

Chris Gayle was upgraded to Chris Hurricane today , hitting Prune with sustained winds of 175 mph .... the 1st category 5 in India ..

NB - (+157 mph = Category 5 Hurricane - the highest on the scale)

  • Naresh28 on April 23, 2013, 21:21 GMT

PWI are a disjointed team.Their captain is poor.ANYWAY WELL DONE BY GAYLE. It is obvius from previous games that a right off-spinner would probably be effective to Chris Gayle - a ASHWIN type of bowler.

  • m0se on April 23, 2013, 21:17 GMT

The other RCB batsmen didn't want to feed the strike to Gayle - they wanted to do their own heroics. He could have made a double if he had gotten 10-15 more balls to face.

  • andrew27994 on April 23, 2013, 20:07 GMT

Awesome innings by Gayle!!! It was an absolute treat to watch. I think the only way PWI could've stopped Gayle was by playing Mendis and Richardson and dropping Marsh and Smith. The latter has been awesome with the bat but on good batting tracks and limited experience of PWI bowlers, they should've strengthened their bowling attack. Also the idea of playing Murtaza and I Pandey was obviously a mistake. I can understand Pandey's problem but bowling Murtaza especially when Gayle was on strike was just a bad idea. PWI should concentrate a lot more on their bowling in future. I think PWI are missing Alfonso Thomas very badly because he is just the right sort of bowler needed when a batsman like Gayle is on fire

  • on April 23, 2013, 20:04 GMT

    Awesome Gayle you rock mate!

  • pjkaka on April 23, 2013, 20:01 GMT

People talking about the size of the ground...have you looked at the distance for Gayle's sixes? All were in the 85m+ range. They would have cleared even test grounds. His biggest six was nearly 120m.

  • mzm149 on April 23, 2013, 19:56 GMT

IPL hasn't groomed a local fast bowler let alone a decent fast bowler. All the local medium pacers bowl without any swing, seam or pace except a few. Most of international players are all-rounders. Genuine fast bowlers are very few in the tournament. This lack of quality bowling and batting-heaven pitches can only provide players like Gayle an opportunity to wreak havoc.

  • Harmony111 on April 23, 2013, 19:51 GMT

Gayle was like Tunguska Event today. I couldn't believe how mysteriously easily he was nonchalantly hitting 6s today. It was almost boring. The best thing was that each replay showed how still he was before playing those shots. This shows that feet movement is not the aim of good footwork, the real aim is to be in the bets possible position to make the bat meet the ball. Kerosene, Watson, Sehwag & Gayle are among those who lack the classical footwork but who manage to somehow get in a position of extreme stability. Kerosene & Gayle do that by having a large gap between their feet and then using their long arms for max reach, Watson does that by putting his front foot down like Angad & using his torso as a counterbalance & Viru does that by using his whole body as a single fluid unit. I guess for extreme hitting you need that sort of optimized minimal technique. With due respect, a RD or JK would waste too much time in deciding about the right footwork for such brutal knocks.

  • warun_sharma on April 23, 2013, 19:29 GMT

Guys don't blame flinch, he is not a captain but after he got runs aland donald is the one who put poor flinch to this role which he couldn't do , agree mathews in his early stage as a captain but he was good captain than flinch, with his good bowling he should be in playing ix but not the captain because all the decision making is doing by ALAN DONALD , all pune fan should blame to ALAN DONALD the worst coach ever in cricket history, he looks like a school principle, captaincy should go to uv , 4 overseas players should be Flinch, Smith, Luke, Mathews

  • GrindAR on April 23, 2013, 19:18 GMT

curiosity.... is the ground for u19 t20 game? so small and a flat pitch. PWI did not try hitting out as rcb did. The bowlers length was not that bad, but why did not they bowl slow? all PWI did was brainless running and try to as fast as they can? No swing. I did not see one ball doing inswing. if straight ball, however it is, going to be hit by Gayle kind of timing, unless it is >130kph. Does IPL provide any franchise barring based on their consecutive season worst performances? PWI just waste their money on egoistic management. Quality of IPL will be continuously questioned for this kind of repeated games. My local town fellas do much better than this PWI show.

  • Htc-Android on April 23, 2013, 19:17 GMT

There was nothing special with luke wright bowling today. He just had a good day with the ball. Overall mathews is a better bowler than wright. He was very economical with the ball in this IPL season. But wright is in good form with the bat, so i would still pick ahead of mathews since mathews batting form is poor.

  • Htc-Android on April 23, 2013, 19:13 GMT

Poor captaincy by finch. What attempt did he make to stop gayle today. If this happened under mathews, everyone would be eager to blame his captaincy and will say he made poor decisions on the field. Now it happened under a different captain, all the credit goes to gayle. PWI batiing is not uptp the mark either. When gayle scoring 175 in 66 balls on the same pitch, the PWI scores only 132 in 20 overs.

  • Superstar_Salman_Khan on April 23, 2013, 18:35 GMT

Gayle's weakness is facing off-spinners. Even someone like Hanuma Vihari from SRH, who is a part-timer in Ind domestic circuit got Gayle out for nothing in his very first over.

Don't knw wht PWI management was thinking. Pervez rasool is quality off-spinner in their side, who can bat too. But he is warming the bench.

Feeling for I. pandey. He got his IPL debut when Gayle was in murderous mood. he might never get a chance again. :(

  • vijay2pvk on April 23, 2013, 18:33 GMT

No one need to say csk beware or buzz off ... They already proved by taking gayle's wicket at the earliest in previous matches n ipl's .... Csk have a very good captain who leads team india and also have a very good n young talented flemings as a coach. They always make plans for known dangerous hitters. Everyone one knows that csk will start the tournament with little shaky...but as tournament progress they will be strong. Yes gayle entertained the crowd and his rcb fans very much..Even my colleagues always jumps and they were happy all the time when gayle gives a show like this...i only say ...lets c how gayle fires during knock out stage. he flops always during knock out stage becoz of extreme pressure to handle which he is not capable of. Last match i really wanted RR to post high score n test csk. finally csk passed the test when situation came. Good luck for all teams. Which team handles pressure that day will surely win.

PUNE WARRIORS Capt. Angelo Matthews thought he was Michael Angleo the artist, but was a wrong choice chosen which self already had 6th sense. Why? coz the day he walked at the inauguration on the Ramp to Sign that elusive electronic board without a pen but a finger tips unable to sign was a bad "OMEN' and today not only he is out from the team but the team loosing constant. Today it was BANGAYLEOREAN Royal Challengers day. Deserves a WORTHY WIN. Why not coz the whole team had 21 boundaries and 21/6sirs a record, and a record of 13/4's and 17/6sirs by that Gayle, beating the previous best of 6/sirs which was with Shane Watson against the Bangladeshish's with 15/6sirs. RCB is certainly in good hands of Gayle, Dilshan/Virat/and Ab Divilliers, Rest of the players doing their part payment with sweat on the field A WORTHY INDEED.

After today's game the icc has decided following restrictions on gayle. 1. He will play only 24 balls (4 overs) only. Afterwards he will be retired hurt. 2. Only one six and one four per over. 3. Strike rate of more than 250 percent will be fined. 4. He should run at least two singles in an over. 5. There will be no fielding restrictions when gayle is batting. 6 . If any spectator catches the ball he is out

  • Stark62 on April 23, 2013, 17:54 GMT

Not a big fan of the IPL but I have to say, I do follow RCB because of Gayle and I'm really glad that I did today.

It was brutal hitting from ball one and there was complete mayhem out in the middle (for the opposition of course) but the bowling was completely shambolic.

The bowling was complete tosh and the bowlers weren't thinking at all, plus the fact that Bhuvi (the only international quality bowler) went for 23 runs, speaks volumes of the bowling on display by the others.

Anyway, I would love to see Gayle replicate this form on the international scene and his next international assignment will be against Pak.

So, it'll be Gayle vs Junaid, Irfan, Hafeez and of course, Ajmal!!

  • 504429641 on April 23, 2013, 17:53 GMT

@Venkat harish, why do you think RCB will allow Gayle to go into auction? They will definitely retain Gayle. Since only two out of 4 retained, should be foreign players, Gayle and de villiers will definitely be retained. Kohli will be retained too.

  • on April 23, 2013, 17:52 GMT

A sensational innings from a truly brilliant player. From reading some comments on Twitter, certain commentators have been a touch sniffy about this achievement by belittling the opposition and the IPL itself. Gayle is no T20 specialist slogger though - this is a man with 2 test match triple centuries to his name and he has scored consistently and heavily in all three formats of the game. When all is said and done, we all watch sport to be entertained and to see things that we - and others - cannot do or even dream of doing. Gayle, for me, is one of the few 'box-office' players in the game and I have been - and continue to be - hugely entertained every time he walks to the crease in whatever format he is playing.

  • elgenioroshan on April 23, 2013, 17:52 GMT

To all SL Fans : Guys give credit to where its due. This is a once in a lifetime innings so appreciate it rather than criticising he cant play full length deliveries or ajantha mendis. Just because mendis got Gayle in t20 WC final doesn't mean he will get him everytime. What guarantee that mendis would be saved? Its not as if he has never been hit for runs. On Gayle's day, no bowler can prosper. Also Bhuvaneshwar Kumar did bowl quite well and Gayle gave him good respect but his very good economy is due to bowling a lot to Dilshan who played a lot of dots against him. It was indeed a gr8 match. A treat to watch. Gayle was 70 short of Orange cap but now he is a 100 ahead with the orange cap. WOW!

  • ahsanmahmood945 on April 23, 2013, 17:50 GMT

  • squarepeg on April 23, 2013, 17:47 GMT

As close to an inning defeat in T20 as it can ever get. When awesome power meets mediocre bowling, one should expect carnage. Bhuv Kumar did a remarkable job, which goes to show that other bowlers go up the wrong side of their beds.

  • vijay2pvk on April 23, 2013, 17:41 GMT

Poor captaincy by pune. Gayle is always a player who blasts the balls to 4's n 6's. This i have seen for past 2 ipl's. Why is he not scoring during knock out stages...is gayle really have potential to handle pressure? Rcb n gayle always fails during knock out stages becoz they depend on gayle who is not enough to handle pressure situations... how many rcb fans accept this? ... One man show never works out for all matches or to win a trophy. Teams effort and the way the handle pressure situation will make them to win trophy. :)

  • Ruban_Varathan on April 23, 2013, 17:39 GMT

Our poor Indian bowlers leaked the runs.....poor team selection from pune management lead to the disaster....mendis should have played today he is the one who could have taken gayle wicket....one question is swirling in my mind everytime "why Dinda is in team after his so long pathetic performance?? This is why he is not been picked in the indian squad.....

  • EverybodylovesSachin on April 23, 2013, 17:33 GMT

You don't need cheat codes. Knocking 20 an over on those Brian Lara games was a piece of cake.

Gayle's innings today was absolutely fantastic. One on the roof then another over it, ending up with an individual score most teams would be happy to end with. Probably the best knock I've watched in any format (Lara and Hayden got missed due to no satellite TV).

  • JG2704 on April 23, 2013, 17:28 GMT

Not a fan of Gayle as a person but credit where it's due - he hits a huge ball.

I think with Gayle the only real hope you have of restricting him is to bowl it yorker length way outside the off stump (risking bowling a wide) or bowl it short at him. I saw the highlights at half time and were my eyes deceiving me or did he hit a low full toss against the edge of the roof to reach his ton? As already pointed out , it's a shame Dilshan didn't get out earlier or give Gayle more of the strike early on. We could have been looking at a double ton and a team triple ton.

  • pappadu on April 23, 2013, 17:16 GMT

Fans when they see one person score heavy runs expect everyone does the same, people have roles,if everyone palyed fast like kholi, thiwary, rampaul, rcb may have ended up with a paltry score due to added pressure on gayle, AB is an exception. dilshans knock was not as bad as you all think, i wished kholi got himself in and exploded, was wishing to see an spectacular gayle kholi partnership.

I am a Jamaican and a high supporter of RCB, I don't like the arguments about Dilshan place in the team. He should continue to open with Gayle, he might not have the same amount of Brute force like Gayle. His role is really to soak up some pressure and score singles.

  • S.Anand on April 23, 2013, 16:40 GMT

Gayle's play today was simply superb and was an outstanding innings. There are no words to describe his play today. The innings was a brutal assault on PWI. I think the crowd must have enjoyed more than what they would have expected which means they owe a lot to Gayle. The easy way to describe the of shots GAYLE = Gigantic/Awesome/ Yummy/Lusty/Enchanting. Not only his batting, but also his fielding and bowling were also really wonderful.I am really proud that Gayle plays for IPL and many young cricketers must learn certain great qualities from him. He shows quite contrasting characters on the field which I admire most..aggression/authority in the play and calmness in the face always. AB De Villiers is also in the same mould.. RCB should be lucky to have these guys. I am a fan of CSK (Dhoni particularly) but when it comes to CSK Vs RCB .. I am getting confused and not bothered on the result due to the presence of Gayle. I will never miss Gayle's play in the IPL. It is a treat to watch

  • abs.liton on April 23, 2013, 16:27 GMT

  • Skilled90 on April 23, 2013, 16:20 GMT

Wonderful knock by Gayle. 1. About Pune, i wondered in thier previous match when yuvi was bowling at a good economy rate why he didnt bring himself up to bowl the last over,he bowls way more than luke wright, i assumed it was just a one time thing, then todays game while others were being hit yuvi didnt even bowl once(he always breaks partnerships), even AARON bowled, kinda shows the lack of presence of teamwork. 2. was bothered by dilshans batting, but then the way everyone got out except for AB, no one really supported gayle, he couldve gotten 200~!

I was privileged to be at Chinnaswamy Stadium today to watch this onslaught. At one point of time I thought Gayle had a realistic chance of a double century. If Dilshan was in his elements, 300 would have been a reality. He wasted lot of deliveries. The flip side of the game was that the Chase was boring and I left the stadium much before the close. Waiting for the CSK vs RCB match here in Blr.

  • Superstar_Salman_Khan on April 23, 2013, 16:00 GMT

Just because RCB won, One can't hide Dilshan's weakness against swinging new ball. Bhuvi was unplayable for him.

Dilshan being one of 4 overseas players, will have to do something sooner otherwise soon you may see him warming bench and carrying drinks again.

He is the only weak-link in RCB. Rampaul is a good addition. Love this guy. Someone was saying he is from Indian origin just like Amla. Is this true ?

is this a match or mismatch. I had been to the stadium and back now to write this comment. I witnessed one of the finest ever batsmanship in the history of IPL. I was shocked when I saw the scorecard Gaye 105 - 30 balls. That was the speed that he did play. Agian. the toss was won but the match was lost for the PWI. But with the form that Gayle was in otday., a chase was such an easy one too. It was a good pitch. NRR is in such a higher stage for RCP - +1.254. I believe we are the best team in the IPL this year.

  • Superstar_Salman_Khan on April 23, 2013, 15:45 GMT

Man ! Gayle could have scored 200+ and RCB could have easily crossed 300, had Dilshan not wasted so many deliveries and allowed Gayle to play more balls. Dilshan was neither timing the ball well, nor he was rotating the strike. All he was doing was just trying to hit the ball too hard without any brains, that was going straight to fielders.

Dilshan hit only 33 runs off 36 deliveries. SR:- 91.66. That's pathetic as per T-20 standards. Even Mayank Aggarwal would have score better thn this

Look @ other RCB batsmen at least Kohli and Tiwary didn't waste balls. And AB was at his best again. SR - 387. Wow ! Dilshan should learn from him.

Credit to Indian seamer Bhuv. Kumar. In such high scoring game, he bowled so economically. 4-0-23-0 Econ. 5.75.Superb.

And Matthews replacement Wright did fantastic job with ball. He kept Gayle silent for most of the time and broke the opening stand too. 4-0-26-1. Great

If PWI had played Matthews not Wright, Gayle surely would have crossed 200.

  • TNAmarkFromIndia on April 23, 2013, 15:42 GMT

Pune Warriors are now well and truly out of the competition. Even if they can get 7 wins from here, which is highly, HIGHLY unlikely, their pathetic NRR after this loss would severely dent even the slightest chance that Pune may have had. Sahara must now look towards the next season and insist on no player retention policy so that all players enter the auction and they are given the chance to buy some top cricketers.

  • on April 23, 2013, 15:41 GMT

PWI shud send Luke wright to open the innings, at least he has hit couple of fast centuries in the past for Sussex and Melbourne!! Wright Shud open wit Finch. My line up for the next match would be 1) Wright 2) Finch 3) Nayar 4) Yuvi 5) Smith 6) Mathews/Marsh 7)Hapreet Singh/Raiphi Gomez/Udit Birla 8)Dwivedi/Rawat(WK) 9) Bhuvaneshwar Kumar 10)Ishwar pandey and 11) Rahul Sharma. Remove Dinda ASAP!!! the first solution!!!

  • SamRoy on April 23, 2013, 15:40 GMT

@Andy Matthews Very well said mate. I couldn't have put it better.

  • Noel-Kalicharan on April 23, 2013, 15:35 GMT

Gayle's number on his back is 333. His highest Test score is 333. A 30-ball century is a strike rate of 333. His innings was interrupted by a 33-minute rain delay. His partner, Dilshan, scored 33. And Gayle is 33 years old!

  • pradave17 on April 23, 2013, 15:29 GMT

Totally live innings by Gayle. And also a superb usual knock by ABD. RCB should think off the opener since, Dilshan getting doubt on his form. Usually what can see from Dilshan is try to save the wicket creating dot balls until he gets runs. But this is harmful for RCB when they have severe opener like Gayle. Today also if Kohli had a chance to come early, the total would have been around 300. Fortunately, Gayle was working other wise Gayle could be thrown away his wickets for shortage of runs.

  • on April 23, 2013, 15:23 GMT

Gayle is mastering the masters Afridi might have been shocked,

  • Indefatigible on April 23, 2013, 15:22 GMT

Christopher Henry Gayle. I think the opposition need to go and hide your bat sir. You are so ruthless, so destructive, so savage that I have never ever seen anyone bat like this ever before. The only one who'd come close is probably a fellow West Indian, a gentleman who answers to the name of Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards.

  • on April 23, 2013, 15:20 GMT

No one in this world is more explosive when it come to Cricket but this guy Gayle! Make it look easy. Lets go RCB!

  • AltafPatel on April 23, 2013, 15:16 GMT

Gayle giving finishing touch to his glorious IPL career scoring memoth 4th century. For Pune, no more different than long haired Predator ! :) Fans of Pune, please don't look towards figures of the bowlers !!!

  • sweetspot on April 23, 2013, 15:15 GMT

Yow! What's with all the arguing on a day like this? RCB vs CSK vs India vs SL. Argh! Enough with all the silly stuff. Shut up and enjoy the GAME!

Chris Gayle has provided us with something incredible, and we should all enjoy it if we're cricket fans. Pune will be deflated no doubt, but they also bowled badly. Except of course, when we look at how Bhuvaneshwar bowled. Feeding Gayle's strengths doesn't work most of the time even on a tougher wicket. Feeding his strengths on a track he loves? That's a holler and a hoot. He is such FUN!

To the arguing crowd: This sort of thing doesn't happen very often, but the arguments can come up anytime. So, please take a holiday from the childish stuff and simply enjoy Gayle!

one bowler(bhuvi) conceding just 23 runs of his four given over and another(wright) given just 26 of his four, yet the batting team gets 263in 20 i.e. of the remaining 12 they got 214 runs, i start wondering is it chris crazyness alone or aided along by the lack of discipline by other so called bowlers, i am not suppressing or under-stating the gayle effect, we all know what he can do, but just want point about the other bowlers ineffective bowling.

  • Batmanian on April 23, 2013, 15:04 GMT

I remember reading about Viv Richards farming the strike to score 189 in (may be wrong here) an old 60-60 English ODI, and thinking it was ridiculous (possibly Zaheer Abbas had scored more at the time?). Can what Gayle's done ever be beaten?

  • on April 23, 2013, 15:03 GMT

Put on my TV somewhere during the start of the RCB innings! It looked like it was showing the highlights of some match, and i turned it off after a few deliveries as i thought the rain was holding up play! Little did i realize that Gayle was holding up rain!!With Gayle even live cricket looks like highlights!!

@ShahbazSalamat: Pakistani players were dying to be in this league as they hardly get to play cricket in pakistan! Just cause they are not in this league now, you feel it is a flop! Grow up! No league in the world do you see some of the best players in the world compete! If you talk about international cricket, it is the players from international cricket who r part of this league!! Just be happy no pakistani bowler was getting his deliveries belted back to Pakistan by Gayle today!

  • GrindAR on April 23, 2013, 15:02 GMT

I like Gayle's batting and more if he bowls. This assault is going to stay long in the books. I just have one doubt, if the PWI bowlers anyway tried to contain him. Look like they all gave him too many lollipops. He might have to take some neem pills to contain his sugar overdose. He hit as many sixes in this match just to double his tally of sixes overnight. What provoked RCB to go for this slaughter?

  • Batmanian on April 23, 2013, 14:59 GMT

175... amazing. I generally find T20 one-dimensional, but when that dimension forms such a beam of light, it has its charms.

  • on April 23, 2013, 14:59 GMT

It just looked like a Video game match, I dont think such matches are good for cricket ! It just seemed to me insane nothing to enjoy about this match, 333.33 strike rate to get to 100? wow gosh unbelievable ! and 175 not out lol !There are matches where people made 100rd under 40 balls but they did not stay unbeaten lol like Gayle :o 175 of 60 is all this real? I don't know what to say but seems like worst cricket pitch ever been made !

  • soumyas on April 23, 2013, 14:57 GMT

4 IPL (and T20 as well) records in the single match. 1) Faster century, 2) Highest individual score, 3) Most No.if sixes by a batsman, 4) Highest total by a team. Out of them, 3 belongs to Sir Christopher Gayle !

  • on April 23, 2013, 14:48 GMT

Wouldn't Man of the Match for Gayle be just too mundane, too trivial - something for lesser mortals? Maybe Man of the IPL for all times be nearer his worth?

  • electric_loco_WAP4 on April 23, 2013, 14:39 GMT

good batting by C Gayle . Really is most destructive bat in cricket easily . Makes me to think if the Greatest of em all ... Sir Don ... were playing in this time at his peak he most definitely would have made 200 in 20 overs on that pitch vs pretty average bowling . Guess ,he would have managed to match CG's 6s count as well . But most obvious reasons will never have matched the big W Indian in distance .... max prob about 95 meters given Don's physical stature . But The Don would have been just as entertaining !!

  • banilkumar232 on April 23, 2013, 14:38 GMT

@ becoollikemanoj, moreover Check CSK team has 8 batsmen who can win matches and with 7 specialist batsmen. Still they struggled to chase 165. Shame on CSK not RCB who has only 5 specialist batsmen and 4 in form.

  • on April 23, 2013, 14:37 GMT

To those people complaining about comparisons with international cricket and those moaning about standards in the IPL I say this - T20 is not a game for the cricket purists and was never intended to be, but if you, as a cricket fan, cannot sit back and enjoy a display like today then I feel deeply sorry for you.

Forget international cricket for one day. Forget if you love or hate the IPL for one day. Forget which IPL team you support for one day. Maybe then you will share in the sheer joy of watching Chris Gayle batting when he is in this form.

Honestly if you can't set aside your prejudices for just one single day and just enjoy that innings for what it was, then you are missing out on a real treat.

Congrats Gayle , I was a busy time in cric info from Work place ;-). I would have loved to watch a knock half as good as that from some indian origin top order batsmen. Gayle has Gone firing the bowlers all over the ground today. Hard luck to pune - lesson's to be taken dont change your playing 11 too often.PWI did change there team too much than any other team. No player had a settled position in PWI. Even then it would have not stopped Gayle force but at-least they could have slowed him down from 333 to 233 S.R.

  • Optic on April 23, 2013, 14:31 GMT

I think the more amazing thing is that Luke Wright bowled 14 of his 24 balls at Gayle and only went for 26 runs in total, now that's amazing.

  • Baseball-Sucks on April 23, 2013, 14:30 GMT

Wow !!! The power of Gayle storm is off the charts. It was awesome how Gayle hit those premeditated shots n sent the ball to stands. Wow :D RESPECT !!!

Well, PWI.. I don't know what to say. Their team selection.. Finch's captaincy.. When all these good things are coming together, we can always see some cracking innings from the opposition. :D

I'd like to know the genius who picked a left-arm spinner for going against LEFT HANDED Gayle. lol There are only a few bowlers who have managed to keep Gayle at bay n Mendis is certainly one of 'em. As Mendis bowls wicket to wicket with variations, Gayle has struggled against him due to his lack of foot-work. (Only way to negate the treat of Mendis is to use your feet well.)

Ask Mahela or Snaga how to get Gayle out (He failed against SRH (1, 14) )

Anyway, Love your work , Lord Gayle. Hope to see a lot like this in the future.

I must apologize for the agony that Pune Warrior incurred today. C. Gayle unleashed his destructive Gayle power and ripped Pune's attack apart. I honestly could not believe the two total I saw in RCB innings today. It was mesmerizing and it even got worst when Gayle took wickets, I felt as if I was going to cry. Remarkably though, I did love Pune spirit after the game and I do believe that they can rise if they play Marlon Samuels. RCB is my team and I enjoyed it all today!!! go R go C go B you are the #ONE!!!

  • charlesie on April 23, 2013, 14:28 GMT

Warning!!!!Chris Gayle has absolutely assaulted those bowlers today! This should be a cricket crime! He should be charged on two counts for brutalizing two white, innocent cricket balls. AB should also be charged as his co-conspirator. All joke aside; this has been a tremendous display of attacking, positive cricket. I love it! I always enjoy watching Chris and AB bat. • gsingh7 on April 23, 2013, 14:09 GMT

gayle can only play on flat tracks. in recent series in australia ,he batted just like how hughes batted in india. he is greater flat track bully than sachin and sehwag , on par with sangakara. everyone knows difference in sanga averages on home soil and on green tops.

  • TheBigBoodha on April 23, 2013, 14:09 GMT

Must have been something to watch. However it has to be said the Gayle is the ultimate flat-track/IPL bully. He couldn't score a run to save his life in the 5 ODIs vs AUS recently, when he had to face the likes of an on-fire M Starc. I note the bowling attack here was pretty ordinary.

Chris Gayle is crazy! and I like this crazy batter!!!

  • on April 23, 2013, 13:22 GMT

IPL7 Bidding Starts Today Who will Buy Chris Gayle

  • cricanalyst05 on April 23, 2013, 13:21 GMT

Pune should ask Gayle to bat for them too to reach that target!!!!

  • CricketpunditUSA on April 23, 2013, 13:19 GMT

Matthews can come in for Shaun Marsh. Mendis is not a decent bowler even as claimed by SL fans! He should stay out. This is Twenty20 and these innings happens once in a blue moon and Pune is at the receiving end!! It is more to the power and might of Chris Gayle than what the opponents could have done! He could have destroyed any attack this day barring Kumble or Ashwin or Murali- the fastish off-spinners.

  • charaka111 on April 23, 2013, 13:18 GMT

NO MENDIS seriously.............. poor selection by pune btw Dilshan was really cool and batting sensibly.. good to see welldone AB ur the best......... kohli has got the dream team it seems....... horrible team selections by pune going without a good captain like mathews or ross ... pathetic

  • AncientAstronaut on April 23, 2013, 13:16 GMT

This is insane. Absolutely ridiculous. My jaw dropped when I woke up from a nap and read the scoreline. Gayle is not just the superman of cricket; he's the superman of cricket on crack. He's done what's difficult to do in a video game. Donald must have cried a bucketful of tears in the last three games. Pune couldn't chase down 119, couldn't defend 185, and now this. It's made a strong case for being the worst franchise in IPL history.

  • on April 23, 2013, 13:12 GMT

    unbelievable ,and rocking

  • TopOrder_ on April 23, 2013, 13:10 GMT

If talking about records, "T20" should not mix with "T20-International". Cricket is cricket dont mix it up with Crictertainment. Funny to see South africa vs Newzealand in same list of records...great innings from Gayle.. he is getting better with his age, were others are doing the exact opposite..i bet there is more to come from gayle.

  • on April 23, 2013, 13:06 GMT

I felt like I should have born in West Indies after seeing RCB vs PWR .

  • Narbavi on April 23, 2013, 13:05 GMT

@charaka111: ha ha, ridiculous this is, ok cry all you want, this is one of the best ways to divert the attention from that superb hundred from gayle!!

  • charaka111 on April 23, 2013, 13:03 GMT

sensible batting by Dilshan welldone RCB .................

  • Tal_Botvinnik on April 23, 2013, 13:03 GMT

@Narvbavi He can at least turn the ball away from Gayle with his off breaks and remembering how much gayle has suffered from ashwin he could have had some control over gayle. Please the sheer inexperiance of your captain finch is shown when he brought himself on.Please don't comment here just to show your hate mentality against sri lankans.

Chris Gayle should be sent to jail for the following offences. 1.5 spectators are injured and 1 person in street knocked down 2.Broke all the windows, roofs in Chinnasamy 3.Destroyed the careers of Pandey,marsh...donald as coach 4.a roof of a Benz in pieces.

  • Sivaramsu on April 23, 2013, 13:03 GMT

Mr:siri12345, Had Mathews Played this Match, RCB would have scored 300, His replacement Luke Wright went for very few. Infact Mathews is very lucky to escape this onslaught. Moreover had Mathews been in for the match against CSK, CSK would have won that game hands down. Again Steve Smith (Mathews replacement) got the extra cushion of run required to beat CSK.

The so called born leader Mathews failed to deliver even once in two season of IPL during crunch situation for PWI. By the way don't forget the pathetic shot he played against Mishra to put the Pune Warriers in deep misery in the stoke of victory. PWI owners did the right thing to drop him.

  • on April 23, 2013, 13:02 GMT

    quite incredible innings

  • ddr3 on April 23, 2013, 13:00 GMT

shall be a great watch if pune shows some fight! and btw BHUVI was awesome as a bowler!

  • on April 23, 2013, 12:59 GMT

It's a superb T20 inngs . congrts... Gayale, Beware CSK?

  • on April 23, 2013, 12:58 GMT

Gayle == monster of T20 cricket. just missed this historical match, but took score update from ESPN cricinfo. ABD villiars also batting well.

  • soumyas on April 23, 2013, 12:56 GMT

OMG....no words can describe gayle's batting....

  • EddieFilsak on April 23, 2013, 12:56 GMT

Why isn't Pune playing Marlon Samuels. Is he ill? Just because Samuels failed in a few games does not mean he is a failure. Play the man! Perhaps that's one reason why Gayle, Samuels' fellow Jamaican, is taking it out on Pune today! ----

he is injured, as is Henriques.

  • Boxilla on April 23, 2013, 12:56 GMT

@Tommyhawk: Samuels is injured as I can assure you he would be playing for Pune seeing as he scored more runs than Gayle last year in the T20 World Cup that the Windies won.

  • mohamedtoufiq on April 23, 2013, 12:55 GMT

That is 100 runs above par score, need to see whether Pune will go for it. Mistake of bowlers could lead to mistake of batsmen, all getting out for less than a 100.

  • Dikesh on April 23, 2013, 12:54 GMT

Can someone count for me how many records were broken today? I am busy watching the longest highlight…

    Gayle ! Gayle !! Gayle !!!

  • PadMarley on April 23, 2013, 12:53 GMT

Oh god!!! I just missed watching this innings... stupid selection of team for Pune. Everyone knows Gayle is the danger man.... everyone also knows one of the very few bowlers who have kept him silent is Ajantha Mendis.... we all saw how Mendis didnt let Gayle score even a single boundary in T20 world cup... and Pune decided to drop him!! Bless them!!

  • on April 23, 2013, 12:53 GMT

It was the atch which was played to break all the record RCB rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ladycricfan on April 23, 2013, 12:52 GMT

    Gayle: Usain Bolt of cricket.

  • charaka111 on April 23, 2013, 12:52 GMT

Mendis took 3 balls for Gayle in WC finals.........

  • futureshafiq on April 23, 2013, 12:50 GMT

Chris Gayle should be ban from T20 cricket.

  • charaka111 on April 23, 2013, 12:50 GMT

two best bowlers (mendis and mathews)for PUNE out paid the prize really happy as a Sri Lankan..........

  • ddr3 on April 23, 2013, 12:49 GMT

Gyale should have played the last over completely and tried for a double hundred would have been amazing!

  • mjrvasu on April 23, 2013, 12:47 GMT

PWI has paid the price for not heeding to our recommendation of batting first. The likes of Gayle, De Villiers and the rest would not bat like the way they do when they bat freely, as opposed to a target score.

  • on April 23, 2013, 12:45 GMT

gayle would have reached his double ton if not for dilshan wasting heck a lot of deliveries

  • ddr3 on April 23, 2013, 12:41 GMT

lol pune set for the WORST defeat ever in t20 in history i guess :P shall be amazing if gayle gets double hundred lol :D now surely IPL has proved it..that it is the best of all t20 leagues!! RCB Winners of IPL6!! Buzz off CSK!! :D

  • nairsasi on April 23, 2013, 12:40 GMT

I Never saw such a wonderful innings..thanks to the captain finch who don't know nothing about captaincy.

  • Narbavi on April 23, 2013, 12:20 GMT

Team is in a fantastic position after 8 or ten overs, gayle is scoring like hell, and this guy dilshan was getting singles and dot balls, waste of an acquisition for RCB, should bring back Henriques, don't know why he was dropped in the first place

  • tommyhawk on April 23, 2013, 12:07 GMT
