One important point that franchises must consider is that no one except the IPL insiders/organisers know where the tournament is going to be held. So CSK might choose players or pay a player based on the venue that they already know. The final price for every player must depend to a large extent on the venue of the games. Specially the uncapped players would be worth a lot lesser if the tournament is being played in SA. I hope all the franchises have thought about this already.

  • POSTED BY on | February 12, 2014, 13:00 GMT

Seems CSK has been doing well in the auction. Having a backup in every department. But wonder if they are short in batting. But then again they covered it up with Mcullum. But wont mind if they can go for some power hitters.

MI comes up with a shocker by using RTM on Pragyan Ojha. With Malinga, Pollard, Harbhajan and ZAK certain to play why do they need Ojha who cannot bat? They dont have a WK yet and chose not to bid for anybody. Shocking. They should have bid for BMac or DKok. CSK picked BMac but with MSD in the side I wonder why.

  • POSTED BY android_user on | February 12, 2014, 6:51 GMT

DD has made some poor choices. They dropped 3.5 million USD on KP and DK. Its too big an investment on two international discards. They have bid for two WK batsmen. They chose not to use their right to bid card for Morne Morkel who was sold at a bargain. They had the biggest purse but didnt know how to use it.

Atif hussain, it is indeed regretful that Pakistani players are not part of IPL. The skill and talent that they can bring to the table is incredible. Majority of the Indian fans would like to see them in action. But the reality is that cricket or any sport cannot be bigger than the factors involved

  • POSTED BY Desiboi80 on | February 12, 2014, 2:28 GMT

@ Atif Hussain - This is a domestic tournament of a country that does not have very good relationship with Pakistan based on what Pakistan has supported and keep supporting. Maybe that's something should be looked at rather than blaming the organizers of ICC.

  • POSTED BY on | February 11, 2014, 20:31 GMT

DK and M Vijay will be hot pieces of cakes as they both can open the innings for a team with all guns blazing. Mumbai not retaining DK is a mistake, guess they might snatch him on RTM.

  • POSTED BY on | February 11, 2014, 19:45 GMT

Did anyone notice that Morne Morkel, the top wicket taker in IPL 2012, is in the auction?

  • POSTED BY CricFanKrish on | February 11, 2014, 18:41 GMT

Kevin Pietersen will be the biggest draw, closely followed by Corey Anderson and David Warner. Players like Mitchell Stark too will be in demand. It will be interesting to see who picks all-rounders like Ravi Bopara, Steven Smith, Ryan McLaren etc. Is Vernon Philander in the auction? Watch out for him if he is in the auction. With the franchises maturing, I am expecting them to spend money smartly for buying a balanced set of players.

  • POSTED BY Alexk400 on | February 11, 2014, 17:18 GMT

I hope corey anderson do not go to DD. I think corey anderson to shine , he has to go to team that needs him and manage him with better players around him. sunrisers is best place or mumbai indians.

Heard about the keen interest in the non-capped players. a few are being called for trials / tests/interviews. But, all standard stuff. Nothing to fit into the glamour quotient of an IPL. Say, someone like Mickey Arthur would have given them some "home work" to do and submit BEFORE the auction starts, failing which they will not be considered. No Mickey fan among the franchises? Of, what a shame! For some excitement. And, grist for the media mill.

Of course, there can be many Andy Flower fans. Don't worry South Africa, Ireland, Zim, and NZ. I am only talking about the new rule that they can "import" players from OUTSIDE the catchment areas.

Can CSK use RTM on George Bailey since he used to play for them? If yes, then I'm quite sure they will use their card on him. Otherwise Bailey to DD for 1.2 !!! Glen Maxwell will fall in value this year, most probably to KXIP at 550-700. Kevin Pietersen will be the star if not reclaimed by DD using RTM. Corey Anderson to either DD or KKR at 800-1200!!!

  • POSTED BY jonesy2 on | February 11, 2014, 14:01 GMT

  • POSTED BY VVSR92 on | February 11, 2014, 13:43 GMT

This auction is going to be a more strategy oriented due to experience gained by franchises in previous auctions. This is the day which outlines the fate of the teams for 3 years. The uncapped players inclusion would decrease the value for other big players since they need to save purse for uncapped players. A fun and exciting thing to watch for!

IPL auction overview: Players, purse and strategy

Big picture

The 2014 IPL auction will be held Bangalore on February 12 and 13, the seventh auction but the third in which the franchises will have to build their teams largely from scratch.

In the inaugural auction in 2008, most of the franchises had only a marquee player each around whom to form their teams. Ahead of the 2011 shake-up, when player contracts expired and two new teams were added, teams were allowed to retain up to four players ahead of the auction. This year, to preserve the core of their teams, franchises were allowed to retain up to five players and given a 'Right to Match' card to buy back some more of their players during the auction.

The auction purse in 2008 was $5 million. In 2011 it was $9 million. In 2014, the auction purse will be in Indian rupees for the first time; teams have INR 60,00,00,000 ($10 million approximately) to spend on their squads. Not only is the purse deeper than in previous mega-auctions, so is the pool of players to choose from with the addition of uncapped Indian players to the auction list.

A total of 514 players - 219 capped, 295 uncapped - will be part of the 2014 auction. They have been pooled into two sets of marquee players, which will be up for sale first, and subsequent sets according to their skills: batsman, wicketkeeper, fast bowler, spinner, allrounder. The sets - 53 in total - for capped and uncapped players are separate.

The rules

Squad composition: In previous years, the maximum size of an IPL squad has been as many as 33 players. In 2014 the franchises need to build squads of at least 16 players but no more than 27. They may buy a maximum of nine overseas players. There is no requirement that an IPL squad must contain players from the franchise's catchment area.

Cost and contract: Every IPL franchise must spend at least INR 36,00,00,000 ($6 million approximately) on its squad at the 2014 auction and the next two seasons. Every player bought at the 2014 auction will be on a one-year contract with the franchise having the option to extend the term for two more years.

Player retention: In the lead-up to the auction franchises were allowed to retain up to five players - of which no more than four could be capped Indians - from their 2013 squads. For each player retained, a certain amount was deducted from the team's auction purse irrespective of whether that was the salary agreed by the franchise and the player. A franchise that retained five capped players - like Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians did - will have a balance of INR 21,00,00,000 ($ 3.5 million) to buy a minimum of 11 players at the auction.

Right to Match cards: None of the previous auctions had this feature. A Right to Match card allows a franchise to buy back a player that was part of its 2013 squad by simply matching the price at which that player is sold at the auction. The franchises have a varying number of Right to Match cards going into the auction, depending on the number of players they retained. A team that retained three or more players will have one card at the auction; a team that retained one or two players will have two cards; a team that did not retain any players will have three cards.

A Right to Match card can be used in the following manner: once the auctioneer has determined that there are no further bids for a player, he will declare the player sold. He will then ask the franchise the player belonged to in 2013 whether they wish to buy him back using a Right to Match card. If they do, then they will get the player back for the final bid made in the auction and no further bidding is possible.

However, a franchise may retain no more than four capped Indian players through a combination of player retention and Right to Match cards.
