Agarkar: RCB will be desperate for Gayle return

Two days ago, when Royal Challengers Bangalore blew a winning position to lose to Kolkata Knight Riders by two runs, Virat Kohli had said his side had lost the game more than the opposition winning it. Royal Challengers repeated the performance against Rajasthan Royals, minus the winning-position part. Within the first 14 deliveries of the match, they lost four wickets, including those of AB de Villiers and Yuvraj Singh. Just past the halfway stage of their innings, they lost their last realistic hope - Kohli. From 46 for 7, it was somewhat of an achievement to move past the lowest IPL total of 58, but there was no getting back in the game. Royal Challengers posted 70, the third-worst score in the IPL, and Royals completed the formalities for the loss of four wickets.

After Kohli was asked to bat, he said he would have done that anyway had he won the toss. What was to follow, however, wouldn't have figured even in his worst nightmare. This was a pitch with something for the bowlers. There was some seam and bounce, and also a bit of swing. But considering the kind of shots Royal Challengers played, they would have been in trouble on almost any surface.

A couple of dots in the opening over were enough for Yogesh Takawale to charge out and heave at Stuart Binny, only to edge a gentle outswinger to the keeper. Kohli walked in and took a wicket off his first ball. His call for a single following a push to off was so late Parthiv Patel, not the best of runners, had little chance of making it across.

Yuvraj Singh had a nervy seven-ball stay. He was beaten a couple of times by Tim Southee, and almost yorked himself. Then Kane Richardson trotted in and sent down a 129.6 kph outswinger. And Yuvraj promptly followed it and tickled it to second slip.

At 5 for 3, Royal Challengers had their best pair in the middle to combat the crisis. Instead, AB de Villiers played on first ball, attempting a half-hearted back-foot punch without having the width. Kohli needed someone to just last for a few overs. But that was asking for too much.

Three quiet overs later, Sachin Rana played on to Shane Watson in the same manner as de Villiers. Albie Morkel is used to coming in at the death to try and hit his big sixes, but even the Powerplay was not over yet this time. His second ball against spin, Morkel went for a big six, and holed out off a googly from Pravin Tambe.

Kohli must have surely been fuming inside, but the very next ball, he calmly swatted Tambe for four through extra cover. First ball of the next over, he stepped out and lifted Southee over mid-on. That was about as close as Royal Challengers were coming to a fightback. In Tambe's next over, Kohli received a half-tracker and pulled it straight to midwicket.

Mitchell Starc and Ravi Rampaul helped their side move past 58, before Tambe wrapped up the innings to end with 4 for 20, his best IPL figures. The RCB pair bowled their hearts out, but by the time Starc reduced Royals to 36 for 3, they were already more than half way to their target.

I agree that he has matured. However, that is a bit like saying my dog is grown up now, and he does not bite as many people as he used to. Virat shows his emotions so clearly that we can see his mood on TV on the other side of the world.

With due respect to Yuvraj's achievements in the past, there's no way he can qualify to be above De Villiers in any batting order ever. RCB are just wasting a champion player of all conditions and formats by not using him properly. At the current position, he can score big only if there is a collapse at the top which mean opposition is heavily on top.Even SA are guilty are guilty of leaving him for too late at no. 4/5.Such a batting star, needs to be in top 3 of any batting lineup and is also a big reason why RCB have never been serious challengers so far. Gayle, Kohli have faced the first 12-15 overs in a huge percentage of the games played since 2011 while De Villiers has been left cooling his heels. He would be better served in some other team playing a much bigger role.Maybe Kohli can open and De Villiers at 3.This will ensure that Yuvraj bats at 4 and gets some decent number of balls to face.

There was something for the bowlers on the pitch and RCB couldn't do much after the powerplays, I think RR executed bowling very well and good to see Watson with the ball again and Faulkner being dropped. So far Tambe looked the best spinner in IPL and had he been 15 years younger, he could have kknocked doors for national teamm.

Team selection needs an overhaul. Yuvraj needs to be rested. This decision needs to be taken. Get Vijay Zol and Tanmay. Let ABDV open with Parthiv till Gayle is back. Team should be ABDV, PP, Kohli, Zol, Takewale, Tanmay Mishra, Sachin Rana, Albie, Starc, chahal, Dinda and Aaron. It is time to be practical than bother about investment.

Now RR is back to wins. Still the batting is not enough. Watson should open and Smith should bat at 4. Binny, Faulkner, Bhatia, even Kulkarni will take care of last overs.

  • PerfectTen on April 27, 2014, 4:38 GMT

Elated to see another Karnataka player playing a role in demolishing RCB! In the previous match, it was Vinay Kumar who throttled Mr. Mallya's men and now it was the turn of Binny to start the slide from the very first over. Would have loved to see Karun carry the bat and finish the match within 10 overs of the RR innings. Tch...you can't get everything you ask for!!! Being a Bangalorean, I have lost 90% of my interest in the team. But, the last 10% wants to see Mr. 14 Crores kept out of the next few matches & Kohli rapped on the knuckles for being loyal to the spent force. I was hoping to see a Mallya interview after the match. Tch Tch...

  • rajkirp on April 27, 2014, 3:35 GMT

One of the cardinal sins of selection is when players are selected on reputation rather than on form. RCB, MI and KKR are paying for this mistake. It is still early in the tournament and is the right time for teams to correct the situation or continue to play such players with the hope that they will gain form. RCB has the promising Vijay Zol, MI need to get in Shreyas Gopal / Ben Dunk.

  • on April 27, 2014, 3:33 GMT

RR has the best bowling unit with excellent variety in their attack...their batting is good too but 2 games they lost is because of wrong shot selection and lack of match awareness. So far RR has looked one of the balanced teams to me.

  • CherryWood_Champion on April 27, 2014, 3:20 GMT

RCB lost it with the team selection itself. Dropping Varun Aron their best bowler so far in the tournament does not make any sense. Some people argue that they want to maintain his workload. But common on ... four overs of fast bowling with two 2-over spells is no where near stress. It don't have to be a scientist to know that. That is clear stupidity.

  • Dominic532 on April 27, 2014, 2:48 GMT

RCB lost as I said in the last match of RCB against KKR.RCB lost and lose their momentum.RCB think tank is poor how they bought Yuvi MOST expensive player. RCB can't win this ipl. They collapse against good bowling attack.

  • YogifromNY on April 27, 2014, 2:07 GMT

Buying Yuvi for mega bucks this year illustrates why Mallya's companies are in trouble. Bravado and swagger do NOT equal competence or ability, Mr Mallya.

  • Ms.Cricket on April 27, 2014, 0:12 GMT

Yuvraj should be brave and realise he is not doing his team (India or RCB) any good with his present form and drop himself. Nothing wrong with that. He has been any outstanding player for all his teams in the past but his time is not now.

    @Greatest_Game

I think Kohli has actually matured as a leader over the past few years. The way he got Parthiv Patel to stand down from arguing with Watto was admirable. He didn't lose his temper at that point. This isn't dressing room pressure, it's a batting failure, nothing more, nothing less. If this happened with CSK, everybody wouldn't blame MSD at all, but since Kohli leads RCB, these sort of things come out! Let's not forget VK tried to get RCB out of the grave!!

  • on April 26, 2014, 19:50 GMT

Farhan it is true that India IN THE PAST has wonl matches because of Yuvaraj. I was his fan but that does not mean other talent should be wasted due his repeated failures. Your argument that other players also did not do well like him is not valid since many of them have fared well in earlier matches. The team management is not a charitable institution and repeated failures of this nature cannot be tolerated after such a large investment.Just visualise how the other members would feel when they are not given a fair chance to show their talent.

YUVI dear has been living in his past glory for too long...2011 is a long time ago...ever since he has only helped India lose matches... as if a final of world cup was to settle down our dear yuvi....yuvi was more important than a win....in IPL he has been instrumental in two losses...why dont one realize that you cant just play him for 14 Crores.....actually he is turning out to be more costly 14 crores + few more crores of losses...his demeanour is melancholic...as if fish out of pond -- when he is in the crease.....opponents are quite comfortable in his presence and dont appeal even when they know he could be out......

  • on April 26, 2014, 18:29 GMT

The match seemed to be a dull & subdued affair after RCB were 4 wickets down in 14 odd balls and could manage just 70 runs. In chasing this paltry score also, RR had some anxious moments.

It was the first match, during this season, which had no entertainment value at all and the match almost ended almost an hour, earlier to the scheduled close. RCB needs to click as a well-knit team, before it is too late !

When is Gayle coming back to play? Many of the overseas players seem to have carried their physical niggles also along with their tour baggage or what ?

RCB management, please DROP Yuvraj immediately. He's also responsible for today's loss. In fact, in the previous 3 games, he did NOT contribute anything. He's a liability. It hurts me because I used to admire him so much during this prime. Now he's on the decline. I feel sorry for Dr. Mallya, 14 crores down the drain.

  • Cpt.Meanster on April 26, 2014, 17:06 GMT

@ Michael Flynn: Yes Tamble can COACH our spinners. He can't be in the starting XI.

  • Cpt.Meanster on April 26, 2014, 16:57 GMT

I am sorry but I think Yuvraj needs to retire from all forms of cricket ASAP. Some 'idol' worshippers will offer excuses of how he was our match winner during the 2007 World T20 and the ODI World Cup in 2011. That's in the PAST. After his illness, he's not been the same. He's past his prime and on the decline. He has nothing left to offer to ANY team. RCB should bench him and play another local player. I am a huge admirer of Yuvi but tough times need tough actions. As an RCB fan, I am hugely shocked by this dismal performance. Absolutely spineless and gutless. Shame.

  • Greatest_Game on April 26, 2014, 16:57 GMT

Let's be fair. I'm no Yuvi fan, but he didn't dismiss 7 batsmen for 7 runs, none scoring more than the 4 extras! Yuvraj did not bat well, but who did?

From this report, cricinfo commentary, & what I saw, RCB were nervous, unconfident, anxious & unfocussed. Takawale's charge after 2 balls & Kohli's manic 1st ball call to an unprepared Patel were classic pressure dismissals. In over 1 that's not scoreboard pressure, but dressing room pressure!

Yuvraj left 2, yorked himself, swung & missed, connected once, then edged. He was not playing the ball, but playing inside his head.

We've seen AB defend for 4 hours: 33 off 220 balls, not a loose or attacking shot. That's focus. Today, a poor loose shot 1st ball. No focus! He seemed disconnected.

Albie focussed for a few, then swung wildly. What pressured that?

After the KKR defeat, Kohli was clearly furious. Today, RCB were manic, or detached & unfocussed. That signals a very troubled dressing room, & stinks of an angry leadership failure!

  • Cpt.Meanster on April 26, 2014, 16:54 GMT

@Michael Flynn: You gotta be kidding me man ! He's anything but the future of Indian spin bowling. He belongs to RR and that's where he will finish his cricket career.

@ Gihan Priyashantha Peries - With due respect to Thambe, there is no place for a 42 yr old in the Indian team - whom will he replace? SRJ, Ashwin and Mishra were perfect for the job, so there was no chance at all for him!

Moreover Thambe is performing well only for the Royals, he was picked for the Ranji side based on his IPL performance and he failed miserably with an average of 115.00 per wicket!

Tambe blends in with the rest in the RR camp and thts why he is successful there. So plz stop claiming him to be the best thing to happen to India!!!!

  • ramz30380 on April 26, 2014, 16:13 GMT

RCB never turned up! Last match everyone was bashin Yuvi and I see some bashing AB today! Pls he still is the most consistent player across all formats with Kohli coming a close second! Even great players have off days.

I supported Yuvi when everyone blamed him for the debacle tht happened last match.... but this match we saw him getting out in the slips! This shows tht Yuvi is not progressing... its a sad sight to see a champion player get out in consequetive games offering poor shots.

On hindsight we can say tht RCB havent overcome that incredible acrobatic catch by Lynn. If this becomes a losing streak then Lynn must be credited for bringing misfortune to one of the most favored teams in the IPL!!!!

Bad loss for RCB. Even now we don't understand why they have got yuvi for such a big amount

  • on April 26, 2014, 13:10 GMT

mr malya without karnataka players yu cant win .. yu ignore robin and vinay so thats why yu loose...yu loose ipl this year .two bad lose...very bad

  • udaykiran.goru on April 26, 2014, 13:10 GMT

Finally a win for RR. Not Comprehensive but a win is a win and Points in the Table. Not a better show with the Bat for RRs but great discipline in bowling. Congrats RR

Actually Royals have such a bowling attack a slow bowling attack that irritates the player to player to play the big shots and thus the ball has no pace it certainly goes for a catch! For Royals a cool and calm player like Hussey is the best. Although Csk survived under tough conditions, with Jadeja's sense of mind not going for a huge ones he made us reach the target of 140. I would even prefer Gayle in auch conditions as he has power in his shots.I say, Royals can be thrashed easily if they are playing against a player times his shot perfectly and plays it sensibly. Bangalore are in serious trouble but!

Rcb you surely are never going to win this tournament without Chris Gayle. He is a giant. Look at today's score and the score against PWI last year. That says it all.

  • on April 26, 2014, 12:34 GMT

the worst thing that malya did is taking yuvi although he s not in form n hopes that any miracle will happen n he did not purchased any gud foreign players other than and n gayle. one thing he can do is drop yuvi n give some chance to any other Desi player.

  • on April 26, 2014, 12:31 GMT

    go home rcb

  • on April 26, 2014, 12:29 GMT

RR/Punjab will win IPL7 not CSK.

  • vkumar_086 on April 26, 2014, 12:25 GMT

its all effect of 14 crore Yuvi....it did not allow to buy other capable players...see maxwell, how he is performing, 279 runs in only 3 matches @ astonishing strike rate of more than 200....awesome...second highest run scored player is way behind him, if he wants to cross maxwell, either maxwell perform very badly at least in 2-3 games..... although im bangalorean, im not supporting RCB, im supporting CSK, RR and KXIP....hope in these teams, one of the teams will lift IPL this year..

  • coldcoffee123 on April 26, 2014, 12:12 GMT

Tambe deserves to play for India, at least in T20, ODI. I do not care if he is 42 or 22. He rarely gets smacked for 10+ runs in an over. Has excellent control. Hardly any wayward balls. Heads and shoulders above Piyush, Ohja, Mishra, Harbhajan.

  • on April 26, 2014, 12:04 GMT

if abd is not playing well.. then drop him and replace other foreign player.. rcb s such a worst team that they Dont have proper bench strength.. 14 crores almost equal to 3 maxwell's rate..

  • on April 26, 2014, 11:56 GMT

wat can alone kohli do now ?? others not really giving their support ...

  • on April 26, 2014, 11:56 GMT

    whatta disaster RCB....#T20 s a freaky format of cricket...#mouthshut

  • on April 26, 2014, 11:56 GMT

Again as I see ppl have just made yuvi the scapegoat what about kohli's mistake of running out Patel? Ab de Villiers scoring a duck ....

  • on April 26, 2014, 11:54 GMT

rcb deserves the lose. well done RR. give a chance to zol. drop rana. still what happening to Gayle. 14crore yuvi what u r doing. just retire from cricket.

  • on April 26, 2014, 11:41 GMT

Gayle single handedly won most of their games last year

  • on April 26, 2014, 11:41 GMT

    they are missing Gayle

  • on April 26, 2014, 11:39 GMT

RCB what a joke! RR well played

  • Dominic532 on April 26, 2014, 11:29 GMT

RCB playing poor very poor.Bad shot selections.RR bowling execellent and top of the match.Again and Again OUR HERO or we can say SUPER SUPER DUFFER FOLLISH ZERO yuvraj sing gets out.He is playing very poor and gali cricket after WORLDT20 he is criticised. He played a knock of 67 against weak team. But matches like MI or RR he is super super floop. He is flat track bully. And talk about other players they are performing one day bad its ok.But if you flop again and again then you cannot play in final XI.So RCB can only pray beacuse they not going in the playoffs. They can play for their respect.RCB Team of FLOPP PLAYERs.

@Biswash: He fails alot in T20's. I think Kohli is now the best across all formats. The rankings show it.

  • on April 26, 2014, 11:26 GMT

Never expected that RCB would be 46/7 Some miracle needs to happen for RCB.

  • on April 26, 2014, 11:15 GMT

i dont no why people are starting to doubt devillers...common people lets not judge with 2,3 ipl games..still he is best batsman across all formats...if ab haters dont believe me then u will see who is ab in coming matches...

  • on April 26, 2014, 11:15 GMT

27/5 in 8..Some thing is seriously going on in ABU DHABI....

  • vkumar_086 on April 26, 2014, 11:14 GMT

for the first time im seeing very weak rcb batting line up...except kohli and ABD, no other players performing consistently....KXIP and CSK are balanced teams and RR also good team.....

  • on April 26, 2014, 11:08 GMT

want albie n kohli to bat responsibly.. score atleast 100 rcb

  • on April 26, 2014, 11:04 GMT

Cmon Guys say that yuvi lost the match again! I'm expecting people to say that

  • Snambidi on April 26, 2014, 11:00 GMT

Dear Friends,Time and again Ihave been mentioning that this season the IndianT20League is full of surprises. This match is one of such surprises. DeVilliers&the best buy Yuvaraj falling so early is indeed nothing but disaster not even a surprise. Bangalore is considered to be a consistent Team .But without even appearance from Gayle,it looks the Gail of misfortune has already taken it's toll Kohli will have to work overtime now to overcome the hurdles in their path of progress

  • on April 26, 2014, 10:52 GMT

5-4. What is going on in Abu Dhabi
