Cannot but feel really sorry for Raina and CSK fans. A run rate of 9 was easily achievable with 15 overs and 8 wickets in hand. All the foreign star batsmen were a disappointment, seemingly playing without purpose, and careless stroke play or running between wickets and losing the fantastic momentum given by Raina. Both Faf and Brendon were clueless and out of sorts in their positions. Smith was out to a lethargic offering of a lifted drive for a straight delivery. Hussey - did he come out to bat? Notwithstanding the lack of effort, not trying out Raina or Smith with the ball when the so-called regular bowlers were going at 11 p.o. proved very expensive. And so was the batting order. Did Jadeja have any good innings in this IPL to back up his promotion in the order? Maybe Dhoni has been there too long for CSK, maybe a fresh face needed to lead the side in future IPL.

The greatest T20 innings I've ever seen given the circumstances from Raina. But my predictions were correct. Ashwin conceded no less than 40 runs and CSK got thrashed around the park. Good match though.

Sehwag is mater in his class. It was sad to see him going out from DD but the right side picked the right guy,,,,,,,,,,Being a punjabi i favoured KIX Punjab.

I personally think this deserved a separate section of its own but if not that, the totally uncalled for send-off that Ashwin gave Maxwell should at-least have been mentioned in this report. Day by day, Ashwin is starting to act like a punk spoiled brattish little kid and his behaviour needs to be checked now, before he gets himself into any major issues.

The match referee really needs to keep his eyes open since that was a very obvious violation of on field code of conduct.

Bailey is the finest captain of IPL team. Kings XI Panjab is the best team of the IPL (points itself shows). I am very happy that they defeated the CSK.Bravo.

Hard luck CSK but you played well. Good luck to KIngs XI and let priety have her first IPL title but I strongly feel that it's going to be a easy win for KKR. KKR is too strong and confident to be beaten by Kings XI. SRK going to have the last laugh.

  • POSTED BY Robtyson on | May 31, 2014, 15:39 GMT

CSK lost this match just bcoz of pure bad luck. The way Raina was batting, he would have easily scored more than Sehwag. People who are praising Sehwag like any thing should also praise Raina as Raina was playing under pressure of chasing a big score where Sehwag was playing freely without any pressure. And Raina's batting was immaculate. He was jnot just slogging. So I would say Raina's innings was better than Sehwag. And it was unfortunate he got run out. And its good for Team India as he's playing well. I firmly believe that he's a big asset for team India for T20 and ODIs.

  • POSTED BY cvenka on | May 31, 2014, 13:47 GMT

Has any one noticed this? The asking run rate for CSK was almost 12 run at the start of their innings. Their team was filled with 4 overseas batsmen. They totally faced 31 deliveries & not one ball was hit for a boundary!

  • POSTED BY kunderanengineer on | May 31, 2014, 13:45 GMT

@Facebook User who says George (Bailey) was completely useless. Are you serious? Did you actually watch this game? Because if you did you would have seen that he was responsible for the most important wicket in this match, that of Raina. Maybe Bailey didn't score many runs but heaven only knows how many he saved by running out Raina with that incredible play. One might actually go as far as to say that he saved the game for the Kings XI. He also has a tremendous disposition on the field and is a great calming influence on his players as he never seems to get rattled even when things are not going well This is not a description of someone who is "completely useless" in my books.

  • POSTED BY ssenthil on | May 31, 2014, 13:33 GMT

Should CSK bought out McCullum contract as well as Nehra? CSK should try to get RP Singh and Aparajith in the playing 11 at least for CL T20. Bravo will qualify to play for CSK as he played just only 1 match? CSK never tried Mat Henry and Aparajith, who deserve at least 1 outing and that is why they lost this match. Dhoni as usual will never learn anything from it as he did in World T20 Final and repeatedly say his decision is a good one but failed to provide a desired result. He need to understand that a failed result meant his decisions are not correct.

  • POSTED BY on | May 31, 2014, 12:00 GMT

All those who talk about Dhoni and his finishing power are not taking into account the fact that Dhoni has been called a Finisher in ODIs mainly and not in T20 ! That it is very difficult to be good finisher in T20 is not easy specially when the target is as big as 220+ and we could have been a witness to one but for Raina's run out ! As for Raina's detractors you guys have a short memory about all the wining innings he has played for India ! It was a good idea that Jadeja had come ahead of Dhoni but he too let the team down by that wild swing to a widish delivery and that was the final nail in the CSK coffin ! As for KXI they deserved to be in the final after having won almost all their matches .

  • POSTED BY on | May 31, 2014, 11:58 GMT

Its sad to see Raina innings did not result in win. CSK should have easily got home after his innings.

  • POSTED BY Mr.CricketJKNotHussey on | May 31, 2014, 10:36 GMT

Taking nothing away from Raina, that was a once in a lifetime innings. So the KXIP bowlers should not feel disheartened, plus they fought back terrifically and won the match. Raina played the first 6 overs like they are meant to be played. He was hitting over and above the fielders. Had the field been spread out, he would have certainly been reigned in. That said, it was an amazing innings. What was even better was the fact that it followed an equally amazing innings by Sehwag. Both played proper shots, and Sehwag really showed how cool and collected he can be in pressure situations. CSK did botch the chase, but KXIP fought back with great intensity and didn't let them build on Raina's knock.

  • POSTED BY on | May 31, 2014, 10:25 GMT

Dhoni said he would not giving runs and saying we can get any target. Does this not reflect on bad bowling? He never blamed bolwers who gave away runs.

But shockingly for the first time, I felt Dhoni was openly critical on his team mates with harsh words. He also said, i was confident my bowling would give Punjab above par socre. This is very unusual and immature comment i felt. In this match some how he was not accepting that Kings XI played well and bowled well. Akshar's fabulous tight bowling was also an important aspect of their victory in this match. even after raina's exit, the score was as gettable as any other T20 match. But Dhonis men were held back by some good field placements and wonderful bowling.

@ FACEBOOK USER Again jumping to conclusions. blind hero worship as if somebody is plotting against their hero. read the article related to Dhoni's post match comments and he did praise Sehwag for his efforts. Even then what if Dhoni didn't praise Sehwag?? Will that innings be devalued??? Its too emotional immediately after loosing a match to gather ur thoughts and praise each and everyone. so stop finding silly excuses and move on.

FACEBOOK USER Raina always played like this in T20. Maxwell didn't play like this for Australia, Miller flopped for SA in WT20, Yet you chose Raina. What a hypocrite. Can you tell me how many matches did Miller won for his country?? Raina was the main reason we won ENG ODI series in 2013. he scored T20I century in WT20 in WI. He played crucial knocks in WC 2011 in QFs and SFs. Raina was the 2nd highest run scorer for India in England ODIs in 2011. He played well in recently concluded WT20 whenever given a chance. How many matches did Maxwell won for his country?? Raina has a problem with Short pitched ball which most batsmen have but its obvious in Raina's case. He is working on it and once he improves he will succeed in test cricket too.

Things stand out in this year CSK's journey.1. No games in Chennai yet winning 9 games out of 14. 2. Lost D Bravo in the 1st game of the season yet progressed into Playoffs without any glitches.3. No top form for Dhoni, Jadeja, Ashwin and not a single overseas fast bowler performing yet secured 3rd spot. We know what happened to RCB once Kohli and Gayle lost form. Next years auction: 2 overseas fast bowlers and one local uncapped leg spinner will help.

@KARNAMGIRIDHAR haha well said. These experts are commenting here as they know everything. They are not even hesitating in criticizing players who are proven match winners in INTL level. They are using 1 IPL failure to judge everything. I m just shell shocked to see the criticism of Dhoni, Jadeja and Ashwin. based on what?? Single IPL season??? Ashwin was our best bowler in WT20 inspite of all the fans ranting for Mishra. Jadeja won us the CT2013 with the ball. Dhoni well his absence was felt just in the recently concluded ASIA cup. Well they are humans too. they are playing cricket since last September. They look jaded and rightly so. Kohli and Rohit look jaded too. Shami too. You can't fault them. Nobody can perform well after the emotion high WT20. They needed a break and deservedly so. I can't see single Australian Criticizing Mitchell Johnson as he failed in this IPL yet most of the Indians are criticizing Indian players. IPL is for entertainmentand enjoy it rather than critizing.

  • POSTED BY JK71 on | May 31, 2014, 8:06 GMT

So many things happening in a T20 game. You expect the international players to do it for Kings. Instead you see a vintage Sehwag taking the game away from CSK. Then when one of the international star from CSK falls to the first ball he faced, we see Raina arriving and playing an out of the world innings. Every ball he hit from the third over, it was like it is too good to last. When a batsman is hitting balls like this it's difficult to continue for too long. But Raina was unbelievable. Too sad that he ended up on a losing side after such an innings. And, for that the blame has to be shared all other including Dhoni. Dhoni had promoted Jadeja in the earlier league match with Kings too and the result was ordinary. Jadeja maybe good at scoring a quick 20/30 runs. However, with 128 to score in 14 overs Dhoni came in a little late in the day. It's unfortunate for CSK that unlike Kirsten in the WC final, Fleming didn't think of sending Dhoni earlier than he did.

This comment section shows how much hatred is going on against CSK. What a shame. CSK is the team of the last 7 IPLs and it will remain in the future. KKR may have 1 good season among 3 poor seasons. KXIP has one good season after all these years of failures yet their fans are mouthing off CSK as they have achieved everything. Only one team that has the right to compare with CSK is MI. nobody else. So all the haters can enjoy this season as this will be theirs for 3 years(approx) but CSK will remain the team to beat in future tournaments too. Enjoy while it lasts. Worst season after 5 years==3rd spot. take that haters.

All those who are suggesting Ashwin not to be selected in the Indian team --"HE WAS THE BEST BOWLER IN THE LAST WORLD T20" How many remember this??? Kohli failed in this IPL will you ask him to be dropped from the Indian team?? If not then its clear you have double standards. Dhoni as a captain of CSK team have the right the right to criticize any player who plays under him. If they are not comfortable with it they can leave nobody forces them to stay. Selecting Ashwin or Jadeja in CSK team is team management's decision not yours. Ashwin bowled beautifully in last WT20 yet no one congratulated him but he fails in IPL yet everyone pounces on him. Its mainly Harbhajan's fans I suppose. Sehwag scores in 1 innings and suddenly everyone wants him in the England tour. Then what about 1st class record???

I can see a lot of Dhoni haters around. what he did against rcb match was fine because he comes to boost the run rate. he complained bcoz he was really worried with his bowling as he always stack his team with genuine all rounders and batsman to do the job. also I like to remind his open comments on his bowling as he said kings xi will take 200 for 3rd time based on his bowling. he is also not happy with ashwin showing gestures to Maxwell. he comes down after 3 balls to talk to any bowler if he went for a lot in those over. he is one of the best leader after ganguly India have produced who we feel is still cool. he has always set his standard high and hope he carries forward. Raina's blitzkrieg went in vain thanks to kings xi bowling. IPL being the development for Indian cricket we can see the purple cap orange cap are still with Indian players as we can see over the year's only foreign players have that. hope csk perform well and all the best kings xi for the man behind sanjay

LOl. and now in England many SL players have gone into shell 67 all out right? does that mean SL players are useless?. I don't know why people take IPL matches so seriously and start degrading quality players who have proven at highest level of cricekt. Dhoni has proved many a times he is a great finisher. Well after all, these are cricket experts comments boss.

  • POSTED BY Tom1m on | May 31, 2014, 7:01 GMT

There is nothing condemnable about Dhoni's comments after the match. He is allowed to express his disappointment too. CSK lost the match by 24 runs, so 10 runs each from Faf and Hussey would have seen them home. McCullum clearly appeared to be present in body and not in mind. Why does everyone expect only Dhoni to perform? The international players in IPL are not beyond criticism, are they? Great game by Raina...would certainly have reached his century in 28 balls.

Dhoni should never be categorized in the list of great finishers! Just by hitting the last ball out of the park doesn't make you a great. With IPL Indian weaknesses are exposed. Now the world knows who Jadeja and Ashwin are!

  • POSTED BY on | May 31, 2014, 6:24 GMT

Doni's statements are highly condemnable. The batsmen who came ahead of him did try their best so to call them irresponsible is not acceptable. And what was Doni doing while himself batting? First he came to bat late, then he consumed so many deliveries, his strike rate was very ordinary and only in the last over because of some big hits his strike rate went bit high. He faced 31 deliveries, it is like more than 5 overs and it is a lot in t20 games, with 31 deliveries he is expected to hit around 60 odd runs or more then only he can criticize other batsmen. His slow batting is one of the many reasons why CSK lost this particular game. His wicket keeping too was ordinary in this game. Anyway delighted to see Kings XI defeated CSK and CSK got eliminated now. Thanks for KKR to force CSK to the 3rd position in the points tally so that CSK had to go this tough route to reach final - and it worked!!!

MSD is only a player of 20 or 25 balls..... 90 % of the time he came when team needed only 40-50 runs..... he never take responsibility when a team needed a huge total....... and the statement after match was ridiculous from MSD about Foreign players..

  • POSTED BY arnav2012 on | May 31, 2014, 6:17 GMT

Dhoni was saying he was confident of his bowling attack giving more than 200 runs in a 20 over game and that scares me as 3 of them are his regular bowlers for Indian team, one upcoming bowler and one ex indian bowler. If you were confident about your blowers giving 200 runs, why didn't you strengthen your bowling by taking an international bowler into the playing 11... these blame games shouldn't happen after loosing the game... this is not the first time dhoni commenting on his players strengths openly which could hurt the players and loose confidence on his captaincy.. remember the comments he made against sachin, gambhir and sehwags fielding skills... I have good respect for him as a captain, but he shouldn't loose his tongue on his own players publicly...

Dhoni's comment sums it al , we are not used to see outspoken dhoni. Something was not right with Brendon Maccullum , he was mentally absent from game. He was running first run slow , one time jadeja reminded him to run at other end since fast since fielder has already thrown a ball at other end. lots of talk on MSD's batting position, which i think is not fare, Winning match is responsibility of every player in the team . if Raina got down asking rate to below 10 , what CSK needed was couple of good overs and they were through - you dont need to hit every ball out of park to achieve that.

  • POSTED BY on | May 31, 2014, 5:34 GMT

The most interesting part of the match: On a match where almost everyone was having a go at the ball, MS Dhoni could only connect on the last balls and then he started cribbing about others. He dint even take responsibility to bat before a tailender, Jadeja. Utter irresponsible!

  • POSTED BY Antony_Lucas on | May 31, 2014, 5:12 GMT

McCullum didnt have his best day with the bar, but i dont think its fair to blame McCullum for Raina's runout. People are assuming it was McCullums call, but it appeared McCullums' indecision was the result of Rainas indecision with the calling. McCullum should be opening the batting or not playing at all.

  • POSTED BY gundapps on | May 31, 2014, 5:09 GMT

All the overseas batsmen of CSK failed. When the ball was flying all over the ground from a flat track it was rather surprising to see Dwayne Smith hardly able to put bat on ball. Also a forlorn McCullum looked weighed down by off-field happenings both on the field and at bat and gave the impression that he'd like to be anywhere other than on the ground. Even if one of these batsmen had put up his hand and stayed with MSD, CSK could have got over the line.

  • POSTED BY on | May 31, 2014, 5:04 GMT

Raina's innings will be remembered and talked about for years to come. It was like watching vintage Lara at his very best producing pure cricketing shots for every ball. The balance, shoot selection and anticipation was brilliant. It maybe a T20 innings in a "sub-continent" wicket but Raina has stamped his stroke-play in everybody's heart. This innings reminds of Tendulkar's marathon innings at Chepauk against Pakistan in 1996 and end up in the losing side.

Last yeat it was vijay who stood like a rabbit in front of headlight made hussey run out and then ran himself out. This year it was brenden, he was a man lost, still menally with his new born daughter, to that extent jadeja had to remind him to run to other end..He ran raina out and and then ran himself out - chennai never recovered from that..

'irresponsible' seniors - Don's statement is the best comedy as if he was a responsible player. He should have come as soon as Raina got unfortunately run out and play a over or 2 to watchfully and go for the kill.I can give statistically in his entire life his finishing skill of a match was just 20 percent and less than Kohli,Raina,Tendulker,Sehwag and yuvraj. He acts like a cool man actually he is exposed yesterday. Its an injustice to Raina after he played the best innings in an IPL.For english tour even now its not too late.Instead of Vijay and ashwin they can recall Sehwag and harbhajan

Raina's onslaught was like a bomber raiding an airbase. It contained the imagination of a power, the skill of an architect and the explosive power of a bomb.If he had continued batting Chennai may have been home with some overs to spare! It is the best knock I have ever seen in I.P.L.cricket.Above all it was not sheer slogging but innovative craftsmanship.

The milion dollar question is whether Chennai would have coasted home, won by a narrow margin or lost very narrowly had Rain not been dismissed.Remember the outstanding performance of Punjab's slow bowlers who made a total metamorphosis to the state of the game.In the end the run rate went to 20 with 3 overs to go and 24 were required in the final over.Maybe Chennai would have missed out by inches even had Rain scored a hundred!

Really sad to see Chennai not making a fist of the game let alone loosing it.

It was awesome watching Shewag bat the way he did. Brought back old memories. It's funny that no one has mentioned about the CSK keeper's keeping abilities. Right through the King's XI innings, he never collected even one ball cleanly which was going down the leg side. His keeping, at best, was pathetic. And we rate him as the best wicket keeper in the country. And we also label him the best captain and the best finisher! Almost all the time that Shewag went berserk, Captain Cool gave the impression that he just didn't know what was happening in the ground. Three cheers to Indian cricket and forget even trying to wish the team any luck in England!

KingsXI are really far far ahead from CSK . Compare to the CSK bowling attack KingsXI has school cricket bowling attack . That's why suresh scored big runs.Raina scored most runs for half pitch and leg side bowling . You see when Sharma was bowling right arm round Suresh can't play big shot like what he played in earlier . Lucky to see Sehwag is inform . he is blinder. That is good move for KingsXI . If Viru would stay till at least 10th over in the final . 100 % KingsXi in winning ways. Good luck KingsXI .Really disappointing the way how played Dhoni . Dhoni should have come earlier . Dhoni was struck in front of the MJ . Dhoni scored just 3 runs for last 5 balls of MJ . Good last over by MJ .

He was scoring at a run a ball strike rate when needing 87 from 47 balls(Thanks to some last over hitting after the game is already lost) and their fans call him as the best finisher in the world. If it was AB then he would have finished the game with an over to spare. Thats what a best finisher will do.

Suresh Raina Plays only in #IPL and for #CSK. Did u ever see this kind of knock by suresh raina while playing for India. I will sure about Raina during #Bangladesh tou, he never scores more than 50 runs including all 3 matches.

  • POSTED BY Prakmca on | May 31, 2014, 1:25 GMT

Punjab through finally..... But with bowlers like Awana you cannot defend 300 in T20 cricket.

  • POSTED BY Dinkepo on | May 31, 2014, 1:04 GMT

Raina's super knocks creates the situation of Viru's game as normal one even though he posted century, what a blinder, very hard to see,as far as Raina's batting concern CSK won the game because we can't blame him while all the foreign players shown ordinary effort to chasing big score anyway this game could give lot of confident to Raina when playing in Bangladesh.

Immediate thing to be followed by CSK owners to ensure the supremacy of the team: 1) Release all the pensioners from the team who are using the mask of their past glory. 2) Nothing to be proud in being a team always in the play offs. It is the victory at the end brings glory to any team. 3)Stephen Fleming is the only player immediately realized his need in the team was a coach and not a player of his style and immediately embraced the position of coach. 3) Team owners of CSK should not follow the methods of MI and RCB. MI had bought all the t20 champions, till a couple of years ago to ensure that they got the trophy and once attained released the potential players. The idea of buying them all was to ensure that the opponent teams were short of talented players. The RCB owners initially had the idea that one winner is enough to get the trophy as in horse race. 4) Ensure that player like Aparajith must be given a chance.Or else he will be in the dug out till attaining age of Badrinath

CSK paid for too much reliance on local bowlers and foreign batsmen did not come good for them either otherwise KXP would have lost.

  • POSTED BY JustIPL on | May 30, 2014, 23:30 GMT

Certainly we are jumping to conclusion about indian team future based on IPL games but there is a word of caution as these are the extreme batting conditions.j Look at the UAE leg of the IPL in seaming conditions where only maxwell shines.

  • POSTED BY lian_14 on | May 30, 2014, 23:26 GMT

The irony is that CSK was the team that gave in to the pressures of a qualifier. After the onslaught of the first 6 overs, they were cruising. After the wicket of Raina, it was a matter of keeping their composure and batting through (the run-rate was only 9 or so), but they didn't. Credit to KXIP, they seemingly stepped it up a notch after the run out of Raina. There was definitely more intensity and desperation in the field and the bowlers bowled much better on a batter friendly deck. All in all, I hope KXIP finish off a fairytale season with a win in the finals. They truly deserve it!

  • POSTED BY wapuser on | May 30, 2014, 23:18 GMT

This IPL has been the most interesting and exciting of all the editions thus far. I'm definitely the one to root for underdogs...even though u can't say that KXI are that this year. I look forward to the final and hopefully it'll be a cracker of a match and may the best team thrive!!

  • POSTED BY lian_14 on | May 30, 2014, 23:17 GMT

Wow just an amazing game of cricket!! KXIP were pretty much down and out after 6 overs; a few more overs of Raina and it would have been a record chase. But credit to KXIP who got through it, and showed unbelievable belief and team spirit under the captaincy of Bailey. I say it once again, Bailey's captaincy is one key factor in this team's success. People say that a captain isn't important especially in the IPL, but I think it's important for a team to be led by the right person to have success. There are so many young players in the KXIP team and in such a crucial game, for Bailey to keep so calm and for him to continually encourage his bowlers and fielders (not to mention leading by example with his own brilliance in the field), amidst the absolute carnage was crucial for this young team. I also like how Bailey has nurtured Patel through the whole IPL. Initially, he protected him but then gradually gave him challenges after challenges and Patel has responded so well!

  • POSTED BY on | May 30, 2014, 23:09 GMT

Notwithstanding the ultimate result, for which I wholeheartedly congratulate KXIP, I must say I have never seen anything like what Raina put on the T20 stage today. I only hope Raina can some day in future forgive himself for his injudiciously judged run-out even if it was as much due to a great piece of fielding as to his own compulsion to gain the other end.

What a fantastic game! I am a English guy who chose Kings as my team from the start of the IPL back when it started in 2008/09? Anyway the reason was I visited Chandigarh and Mohali in 2001 for a Test. Love the place and people. Sadly Stuart Broad was always injured and couldn't play for them in previous seasons. But I have loved the way they have come alive this year with Maxwell to the fore! Superb from Sehwag, and then the assault from Rains was breath taking - didn't deserve to lose. Fingers crossed for Kings in Sunday!

  • POSTED BY ladycricfan on | May 30, 2014, 21:35 GMT

I wanted CSK into the play offs- it happened.

I wanted CSK to beat MI in the play offs- it happened.

I wanted KXIP v CSK finals. It couldn't happen.

Now I want KXIP to lift the trophy. It will happen.

Now we come to our senses. What a match? If Sehwag's innings was breath taking, what about Raina's? It was some dream hitting. No violence. No fancy shots. Pure smooth striking. 100 after 6 overs. CSK was well on course to overhaul the total. Then Baileys throw changed the course completely. CSK foreign players' score reads, Faf-0, Smith-7, Brendon-11, Hussey-1. Well it happens IN CRICKET.

  • POSTED BY baghels.a on | May 30, 2014, 21:25 GMT

First of all congratulations Kings xi for reaching the final and well done to three brilliant individual performances from Sehwag,Raina and Axar Patel.CSK and Dhoni committed a huge blunder by picking all four batters as there overseas players , i don't get it these matches are being played in typical flat batting conditions in India and what different does overseas batters bring to the plate which local Indian batsman can't in these conditions, Samuel Badree should have been the 4th foreign player and he could have been handy today, it looked as if all four of them were competing to show who puts up the worst performance, let it be a lesson to all the franchisees....4 overseas spots are precious and out of four ideally only two should be batters and next two either a seamer/ace spinner/seam bowling all rounder very amusing to see foreign commentators barring Ramiz Raza go quite when B Mac was meandering aimlessly through his innings, contd

  • POSTED BY wapuser on | May 30, 2014, 21:14 GMT

Surprisingly very little on sehwag's masterpiece batting which got them the mammoth total. Nonetheless a superb show by both teams as expected. Kudos to sehwag raina and a patel the main difference. He was the only bowler with a decent economy rate

  • POSTED BY Nampally on | May 30, 2014, 21:03 GMT

It was great to see Indian batsmen shinning in the IPL7 Semi's. Sehwag was outstanding in his 58 ball 122 but Raina nearly won the match for CSK like a dashing Lone Ranger with 87 in 25 balls. In a match where much was expected from their foreign players, it was the locals who stole the show. Sehwag & Vohra totalled 156 runs out of 226 for KXIP while its 3 dominant Foreign hitters Maxwell, Miller & Bailey just added 51 runs between them. For CSK its Foreign player failed miserably with Smith, McCullum, Hussey, duplesis adding just 19 runs between them whilst Raina, Dhoni & Jadeja & Ashwin jointly added 166. So if you look at the teams realistically, KXIP Foreign players scored 32 runs more than CSK foreign players to give them that winning margin of 24 runs. It was great to see Vintage Sehwag of old time who tore the CSK bowling apart. Raina was just superb & but for his runout he was set to beat Sehwag's innings & lead CSK to unbelievable Win. Great match - Kudos to both teams.

  • POSTED BY lokphy on | May 30, 2014, 21:01 GMT

To me, Dhoni did mistakes in the game which he could control well but he is trying to divert attention on foreign players who have been playing good except hussey (which is also Dhoni's mistake to give chance). Opening should have been smith+brendon. Dhoni himself should have come before jadeja and hussey, specially when the target was reduced a lot. Also in bowling he could have tried raina who has a habit of breaking patnerships.

  • POSTED BY GrindAR on | May 30, 2014, 20:48 GMT

One thing for sure... if the boundaries are not widened by atleast 10 yards each side... T20 will loose its edge. If they are so concerned.... have a rectangle or orthogonal shaped boundary line where the placement will decide the length of the boundary... but, with the shortest boundary being atleast 10 yards longer than today's longest boundary....

Otherwise, not only me... there are lots of cricket followers will dump cricket for good.

  • POSTED BY on | May 30, 2014, 20:44 GMT

Really funny report ...Sehwag's inning was CSK bowlers fault ...lol...whereas it the was the reverse...Raina scored due to really bad bowling from Awana and Sandeep....simple as that....

  • POSTED BY GrindAR on | May 30, 2014, 20:44 GMT

I was just wondering what if Raina batted for next 10 balls. Probably wud have crossed Sehwag's score in almost half the number of balls... :-)) thinking and shouting out loud.... CSK wanted to keep this tournament interesting... so, they are bored of finals.... this time for a change.... they let KXIP have a chance on the merit of their ambition and continuous show.... So, CSK treated KXIP like a father would treat his son to succeed... :-))) I'm happy that CSK did not loose their potency...

Dhoni blamed everyone after the match, but he should blame himself first. KXIP scored 200 vs CSK in their two previous meetings this season, but Dhoni did not have any special strategy to stop the KXIP batsmen. The same bowling unit, the same type of bowling changes etc. Then, he sent Jadeja and Hussey ahead of himself when CSK were chasing. Where was that Dhoni who came ahead of Yuvraj in the 2011 World Cup final?

  • POSTED BY on | May 30, 2014, 20:21 GMT

Dhoni blames other batsmen instead of himself for the loss. He could have come in earlier and entrusted the other world class players with the finishing job. Even when he arrived at the crease, the asking rate was about 12, just 1 more than the starting asking rate of about 11. Also blaming his bowlers despite having match winning bowlers ashwin and jadeja, purple cap mohit sharma, impressive pande and nehra. This compared to kxip bowlers, other than johnson all unknown entities. Dhoni should have owned up for the loss than blaming his team.

With establishment team CSK out of running, the IPL gets interesting with new finalists. Asswin was out of order for unsportsmanlike behavior after getting Maxwell out. Great to watch Viru Pa'ji back in his groove. Looking forward to KPX1 vs. KKR Final.

  • POSTED BY Sudhir65 on | May 30, 2014, 20:15 GMT

This is the 2nd time Dhoni has openly criticized his team mates. First it was comment about his batsmen needing to make at least 230 runs in each game ( a sleight against his bowlers) to win and now a verbal attack on his International team mates. What is the need for it and more importantly what is happening to "Captain cool"? India needs the coolness back.

Plus it is very unsportsmanlike. Just play hard and if you end up on the losing side, shake hands with the opposition and go home and reassess. No need to lose your cool in front of 2 Billion people watching all over the world.

We have some strong opening-#3 slots visible... The thing is Sehwag can bat anywhere from #1-#6 with only exception of #3 slot... Regardless, IPL does good things to out of form and well backed players to get back their mojo... atleast IPL 2014 seem to be that way...

KKR has been on a winning streak since the last 8 matches that they've played irrespective of the opposition teams they've faced. KXIP have every right to celebrate their victory, but they should forget that they've to deal with KKR in the final match.

Dhoni was absolutely right in pointing out that it was irresponsible batting from the overseas batting stars that costed the match. Interestingly, these overseas players have actually not won high pressure games for their respective countries as yet. They are good batsmen but crumpled under pressure. Sadly two overseas players are international captains - Faf and Mc Cullum in this losing CSK team. Sehwag's innings early on was stunning. Will he get a call up for the England tour??

  • POSTED BY Sudhir65 on | May 30, 2014, 19:39 GMT

Really do not understand the negativity of Dhoni. Even if your teammates stunk, there is no way they should be criticized in front of the whole world. But the fact is CSK's Intl players have done extremely well- until today. Dhoni's negative statement against them felt like it was intentional on their part and washed out all their positive contributions before today. Dhoni, himself struggled mightily to get the big shots in the 18th and the 19th overs.

  • POSTED BY espncricinfomobile on | May 30, 2014, 19:38 GMT

Poor captaincy by dhoni as usual also he did not go after bowlers right from begining which was required. Dhoni these days is not innovative at all.,that is why india lost T20 final too. Full credit to punjab for a win as they were a better side than csk in whole turnament. Punjab will eventually win the IPL as there will not be any rain for kkr neither will be drop catches to win a game. Punjab did what MI missed against csk... 200 runs.

Raina & Sehwag were playing on a belter & the rest esp the CSK batters were playing on spinning & bouncing tough track. As Raina scored 87 @ SR 320+ whereas rest scored 115 for 6 off 90 balls @ mediocre T20 S/R of 120. While Raina was at crease he had scored 87 whereas at other end batsmen had scored 10 for 2 off 14 balls. Do these figures show an easy pitch or Raina was playing on other strip.

    NO

This again proves the point that a few Indian batters are just too good. Indian pitches are not batting friendly.

csk choked in chase. All the big star failed Dsmith, faf,,Hussey,MCullum all failed in big night.Raina played unbelievably well by unfortunately he was run. He had a chance to break chris gayle record.I am criticizing Ms because he batted very slowly 42 of 31 balls. This run might have been valuable if he had batted at no 4 and he had a chance to score more runs and take them to home by finishing 79-80 odd runs after raina dismissal.I would have loved that. I might be criticized but if Dhoni is the best finisher then he should have taken them home in last 4 overs they required 60 odd runs to win that is very gettable but he play like Misbah ( tuk-tuk) anyway this was a good season for chennai.but the biggest problem of csk is their bowling thats why they are losing. My request to csk is player like faf and MCcullum did not big match experience to win trophies. They both have a great season but they did not a Big match experience .When the team need the most they both failed

Dhoni making the same mistake, sending Jadeja Hussey, even Mccullum before him (Likewise sending Yuvi before himself) made absolute no sense to me... He tends to tag himself as a finisher but the truth is he is one of the most consistent "batsmen" for CSK as well as India... Now its time for the Knights of Kolkata to strut their stuff. We have loaned them Sakib (from Bangladesh) and he will be miserly with the ball (as always). If Yusuf Pathan sizzles again, then Punjab is history. Robin will get his usual 50 and maybe Ghambir will try to match him. If Sakib is in the mood then he will go for 30 ball 60. Can't wait to see KKR clobber the boys from Punjab. Punjab better bring their owner, pretty Preity Zinta to cheer them on. They will need all the help they can get. Bengal is ready to eat them alive. Go KKR.

All the best KxiP. CSK did not deserve the ipl with out having a goto man in bowling and such useless captain. CSK will regroup and show it in CL. Please remove ash-win/lose from csk and give a chance to the TN under 19 hero. He is much better bowler and batsman than this so negative so called bowler ashwin. Life have given chances but Dhoni and Ashwin seems lost few things in game of cricket. They speak lot and do less in field. Anger shown by Ashwin to Maxwell and Dhoni comments over overseas players of his own team means they do not deserve this win and didn't play as a team. It was a chance to prove for indian players in csk just missed this ipl because of bad captaincy. Lions will roar again.

Feeling bad about the Chennai fans. But it is good, you can concentrate in your work again during this weekend.

Happy for Priety Zinta. Her team deserved it. And what a coach they have in Sanjay Bangar. Bangar has changed the fortune of Kings XI punjab. He has beaten CSK thrice in this IPL. Great game though and boy the way raina played, it looked like cake walk for CSK. But their overseas players totally blew it. In hind sight MSD should have come to the crease instead of B randon. MS and Raina play very well together and at that stage MS just needed to give raina strike. Sehwag also played a gem of an inning. Good game.

  • POSTED BY Cpt.Meanster on | May 30, 2014, 18:36 GMT

MS Dhoni's negative attitude finally ensured his team's downfall. He should have come out to bat right after Raina's dismissal. Instead, he sends an Aussie and a Kiwi to play spin bowling; what a shocker and total waste of Raina's efforts ! I would also like to say that Ashwin and Jadeja should never play for Team India again let along CSK. Both are club level bowlers who were rightfully smashed by Viru. The two deserved teams are in the final - KKR vs KXIP. Should be a mouthwatering contest. Good luck. See you in the Champions League CSK.

Can someone please enlighten me on to why McCullum wasn't opening? He and Smith had a very good partnership going, weren't they averaging something like 60 runs for the opening partnership? And du Plessis is a middle order batsman, this defies logic.

The master stroke of Dhoni came probably after the match was over.. Blaming the international cricketers and spinners in order to hide his own inefficiency in the end....

  • POSTED BY D-Coach on | May 30, 2014, 18:25 GMT

Superb bowling Akshar and what an innings by Raina. Dhoni is the alone reason for this loss. Poor capacity. He is not a capable batsman unless the bowler makes mistake. He made the contest into no contest. Similar like earlier KxiP cheasing. What he was trying to do sitting outside and sending all his batsman above him and wasting the balls when they failed once in a time. Shane on you Dhoni. Its visible that you won all through team nothing because of your talent that you praised. He is nothing when team under achieve. Becoming hero once it is done by rest of the team is his smartness and misusing the captaincy power for his glorwy. What a ridiculous speach at end of match blamming international cricketers. Agree they missed things only in this match. What dhoni in this ipl. Aswin don't deserve his place in csk or indian team. I am proud that if indians could have won this match like all bowlers, raina and jedeja. Dhoni did his stats. Time to think. Angry is not answer - Dhoni.

  • POSTED BY Manoj1234 on | May 30, 2014, 18:22 GMT

Dhoni - Very irresponsible batting from some of the top international cricketers in the side Amazing coming from Dhoni and I fully agree. Not a single international cricketer in CSK contributed and infact one of them got Raina out.

  • POSTED BY on | May 30, 2014, 18:22 GMT

Johnson should be watched very closely for no balls, he tends to ensure the crease is not visible and his no balls are huge.

Also is it fair that Shewag went back and was not on the ground at the later part of the game.

CSK has to rethink of its line up, can they be dependant on just on poor little guy "RAINA"

No one else was able to score 4s and 6s after Raina - why?

Bored of seeing CSK everytime. Would be very happy to see KXIP and KKR in Final. Otherwise would stop watching IPL from next year. Anyway great innings by Raina in vain. Suprised to see Dhoni's decision to bowl first in an eliminator. If CSK would have played first (tension free), they could have scored 200 plus easily, and the game could have been different.

Has any one noticed this? The asking run rate for CSK was almost 12 run at the start of their innings. Their team was filled with 4 overseas batsmen. They totally faced 31 deliveries & not one ball was hit for a boundary!

Kings XI survive Raina scare to win runfest

The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy
  shares 167

Kings XI Punjab 226 for 6 (Sehwag 122, Miller 38) beat Chennai Super Kings 202 for 7 (Raina 87, Dhoni 42*) by 24 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Chennai Super Kings were making a chase of 227 look absurdly simple. Suresh Raina seemed to be batting in a trance that was slowing down time, and slowing down cricket-ball physics, as if he were a character in a dodgy, CGI-heavy action film. Raina was making Virender Sehwag's 58-ball 122 from earlier in the day look like an everyday sort of innings.

Super Kings were 100 for 2 after six overs. It was the highest Powerplay score in Twenty20 cricket. Raina was batting on 87 off 25 balls. The asking rate, which had been 11.35 at the start of the chase, was now 9.07.

It looked as if only a run-out could end Raina's eerie innings. And this was exactly what happened, following a smart piece of captaincy and an even smarter piece of fielding, both from George Bailey. Having brought on Karanveer Singh, the legspinner, and having brought the field in to deny Brendon McCullum the easy single, Bailey himself was called on to capitalise on the batsman's over-eagerness to bring Raina back on strike. Bailey sprinted hard to his left, picked up the ball, transferred it to his throwing hand, and released a hard, flat throw, all this on the turn.

The direct hit caught Raina well short. The throw broke the wicket, and broke the spell that Raina had cast over the game. The magnitude of the target dawned anew on Super Kings, and the magnitude of the total they were defending injected fresh belief into the Kings XI players. Having scored 100 in the first six overs, Super Kings could only manage 102 off the last 14, and even a customary last-ball six from MS Dhoni could not prevent defeat by 24 runs.

Raina found himself in the middle in the first over of the chase, after Mitchell Johnson had sent back Faf du Plessis with a short ball that had gotten big on him. As soon as he arrived, Raina seemed to be batting in a bubble. He tore into Sandeep Sharma in the second over, shredding him for three fours and a six through and over his favourite extra-cover and midwicket areas. Three fours and three sixes - the pick of them a pull over deep backward square leg off Johnson - followed in the next three overs, taking Raina to 55 off 18.

He had reached his fifty in 16 balls, and become the second-quickest to the mark in the IPL, but he hadn't even slipped into top gear. That happened in the sixth over, in which the unfortunate Parvinder Awana went for 33, in a sequence that read 6, 6, 4, 4, 4 (no ball), 4, 4. It was crisp hitting all the way through, but two shots stood out: a six hit straight over the bowler's head, effortlessly, with a perfectly straight bat and minimal follow-through, and a flick off his toes that screamed past midwicket for four.

That, though, was to be it for Raina, who didn't face a single ball outside the Powerplay, thanks in part to Bailey, thanks in part to his own insistence in running that risky single despite McCullum's hesitation. And that was to be it for Super Kings as well. Raina had tore up a massive chunk of their target in no time, but their remaining batsmen simply could not get going.

They also made a couple of tactical decisions that were, in hindsight, questionable: Ravindra Jadeja and David Hussey walked in ahead of Dhoni, who finally came in with 87 required from 47 balls, with too little firepower left in the dugout. The task proved well beyond an out-of-sorts Dhoni in the end.

Before Raina pushed it to the background, the evening had been lit up by Virender Sehwag's second IPL century. Coming towards the close of a season in which he has steadily gathered form, the Sehwag who burst upon the Wankhede came very close to resembling the Sehwag of his peak years, merciless on the smallest amount of width, disdainful against the spinners, and equally capable of stinging power and cheeky placement. His spectacles might have lent him an avuncular air at the crease, but he was as alert to the possibility of a quick single as he used to be in his Test-match opening partnerships with Gautam Gambhir four or five years ago.

With Super Kings' bowlers feeding him a juicy, back-of-a-length diet interspersed with full-tosses (they bowled 17 in all), Sehwag raced along at a strike rate of over 200, outshining all of his teammates in the process. Manan Vohra only scored 34 out of an opening stand of 110, Glenn Maxwell 13 out of a second-wicket stand of 38 and David Miller 31 out of a third-wicket partnership of 63.

When du Plessis took a difficult diving effort at extra cover to send back Sehwag, Kings XI were 211 for 3 with 11 balls to go. It was the third time in three matches this season that they had crossed 200 against Super Kings. For the third time, their batting firepower set them up for a comfortable victory. For six unreal overs, though, their total looked glaringly inadequate.
