Highlights - Supergiants bowlers thump Daredevils

Rising Pune Supergiants completed the double over Delhi Daredevils whose chances of making the playoffs received a jolt with a 19-run loss via D/L method in Visakhapatnam. Daredevils can still qualify for the playoffs with 14 or 16 points, but their net rate of -0.125 means they may need to win by a substantial margin in their remaining two games.

Fast bowler Ashok Dinda knocked over the Daredevils openers within five overs, before R Ashwin and Adam Zampa found sharp turn to smother Daredevils to 121 for 6.

Karun Nair, who showed considerable application to top score with 41, later said that his team was 25-30 runs short. Rain handed Daredevils two reprieves in their defence, before the game was called off by midnight. Ajinkya Rahane's steady 42 not out steered Supergiants ahead in their chase and helped drag the side off the bottom of the table.

The pitch on Tuesday was the same one used for the last two matches in Visakhapatnam. The conditions - both overhead and underfoot - and Supergiants' improved fielding offered no breathing room for Daredevils until Morris blazed away. He struck the first six of the match in the final over of Daredevils' innings and capped an otherwise sluggish innings with another muscled six over midwicket. But the game was Supergiants' after they had kept Daredevils to 28 for 2, their third sub-30 score in the Powerplay this season.

Dinda got his first ball to swing prodigiously and rapped Quinton de Kock's pad with an inducker. That was heading down leg, but Dinda had de Kock lbw for 2 with a similar ball in his second over. Dinda then prolonged the lean patch of the returning Shreyas Iyer when he bounced the opener out for his fifth single-digit score in six matches in IPL 2016.

Nair began fluently with drives and pulls against the seamers before the advent of spin restored Supergiants' ascendancy. Zampa worked Sanju Samson over, having him stumped with a perfect legbreak that followed a brace of skiddy, quicker balls. He went on to dismiss Rishabh Pant and Nair in his next two overs. Daredevils were reduced to 70 for 5 in 14.3 overs.

Ashwin, who was introduced in the 12th over, sent down an uninterrupted spell that read: 4-0-23-0. JP Duminy hung on for a run-a-ball 14 before he scooped Dinda to short fine leg.

Morris mowed six boundaries, including two sixes and two fours off the last four balls of the innings, to finish with an unbeaten 38 off 20 balls.

Supergiants opener Usman Khawaja threw away another bright start when he sliced Morris to backward point for 19 off 13 balls, but Rahane gave the chase substance with three off-driven fours and an upper cut off a Nathan Coulter-Nile bouncer. A top-edge off another hurrying bouncer from the Australia fast bowler detached George Bailey's helmet before rain forced a delay of nearly an hour. Supergiants needed 65 off 70 balls when play resumed at 11.30pm and Bailey shook off the blow by getting on top of another lifting ball and whipping past midwicket.

Sixteen balls after the first interruption, rain made another appearance. This spell brought an end to the game.

@themumbaiindianfan you definitely have a point . I am not making rahane scapegoat.I love his attitude n consistency but on flip side . At half time he clearly indicated team being happy by getting 20 More than targeted 170. All said and done 2 Mumbai local lads playing on wankhade for ages should have had better start. Secondly rahane did slow down making his 35 ball 40 noticeable. Was he better than shikhar for laying platform? Yeah. Did he had overstayed or caused slow down after platform? Yeah. I really like your perspective that on that day windies would have / could have chased anything. Yes India needs a better bowler that hunt never stops for us unfortunately. But with our resources at hand and wankhade history in WCT20 we have to blame batsman. We lost just 2 wickets ? We could have squeezed in few more runs but still might have fallen short. Rahane is ideal T20 player and all IPL teams n fans respect him cos he does his job for team. GL rahane!

    7) dhoni kohli added 65 runs in last 5 overs taking couple target to 192. The way indians were playing since Bangladesh tour, that time they did something remarkable thanks to extra pressure of wankhede pitch average score being 180. Even if rahane had got out in 13th over, chance is very less that India had scored 192+ score. 8) Remember WI did not struggle scoring 193. They would have scored 220 also easily the way they were batting. So, blaming rahane for loss does not make sense. We needed a bowler like fizz or zampa to restrict WI and not bowlers like jadeja or hardik Pandya.

Ooooppppss unfortunately looks like its all over for DD. They exactly lost the match how they should not done it.

With all the other teams running for a spot in the top four.. DD being last in NRR . Looks like another failure for Dravid ..remember India team A lost in the final as well :( :(

Nothing wrong with DD players. Samson and Karun are not waste. If they want they can score faster too. Since opening wickets go initially they have to steady innings which make them slow hitters. This is the result of DDs processes resulting in rotating players and batting order. What happened to Shreyas Iyer and Pant yesterday . Both failed miserably.Did you notice whenever DD failed their bowlers also failed. This Shamy leak runs and he was responsible for 3 losses.Brathwite should be included in all games.DD has no intention to make it to play offs. Simple as that. That is meant by processes.

    4) Regarding SRH victory despite presence of dhawan, SRH has best bowling attack in the tournament. Bhuvi,sran/nehra takes wickets every match, fizz bowls unplayable deliveries and most importantly the pitch is not wankhede. 5) Rahane's pune on the other hand has consistently changing bowling squad, big hitter in form of ndhoni. Ashwin was under bowled whole ipl series like WC. Check stats of rahane and Rohit Sharma this IPL. They have almost same average and strike rate. Whenever their teams won, it was mainly due to performance. Had pune players performed like k Pandya and parthiv Patel in some matches, pune would have won more matches but they depended on rahane in all matches to deliver. 6) Wankhede similar to chinnaswamy is a chasing ground. With WI big hitters to come to bat, India needed something like 240-250 to put pressure. Now even rahane had played 25 ball 30, even in those extra 10 deliveries kohli could have made at max 20 runs taking total score to 212 only (contd)

The analysis was clearly wrong for rahanes contribution to RPS as I stated in my last post.

Now if you want to discuss about world cup semi final, there are many ifs and buts and it is very easy to criticise. But consider following scenarios: 1) Suppose India had persisted with shikhar dhawan instead of rahane in the semi final match, he would have mostly got out on 4-5 runs. He scored same in the initial few matches of IPL too. He was badly out of form. This would have exposed our middle order and we may not have scored even 150. Hope you followed world cup all matches. 2) Let's assume dhawan had not got out quickly, still he would have played slowly only like all other marches. Even in IPL his strike rate is only 118. 3) Now I agree that rahane and kohli should have started hitting from 13th over and they hardly made any runs in 13th & 14th overs. But I am giving them benefit of doubt as they expected target to be 170 due to slow pitch (contd)

@mumbaiindianfan how come 192 is sure shot winnable score in wankhade ? World Cup semifinals we were trashed by better team cos we didn't play well n half the balls where timely played by rahane. If you are missing a point lemme tell you in numbers . How does 35 ball 40 sound in context of the game? @cricinfo user is right n there were so many others who followed wc . You could have got many more answers at that time. Was rahane better than dhawan ? He lasted more time. Did teams loss more associated to dhawan? No cos he wasted less balls

When Dravid joined Rajasthan Royals they had youngsters but with Dravid-Watson-Hodge handling key batting roles in the top-middle

Expected Dravid to get better use of Morris-Billings-Brathwaite as a batsman
