James Fitzgerald was a slow left-arm bowler who played 15 matches for Cambridge University between 1966 and 1968, although it was only in his final season he held down a regular place. However, he was most successful in the three games he played as a freshman, taking a career-best 6 for 70 against Essex on debut and then returning match figures of 7 for 193 in a heavy defeat by Middlesex. Although he won a Blue in 1968 his 13 wickets that summer were expensive and he was wicketless against Oxford. From university he went to teach biology at Eton before qualifying as a solicitor and setting up a practice in Datchet.
