Albert Dudley Eric Rippon, who died on April 16, aged 70, opened the innings with his twin brother, AES Rippon, for Somerset between 1914 and 1920. A patient amateur batsman, he scored 1,043 runs, average 20.05. In making the first of his two centuries, he carried his bat for 105 against Sussex at Bath in 1914 though lame and having to employ a runner. When hitting 134 from the Essex bowling at Leyton in 1919, he shared with his brother in a partnership of 144. Troubled by the effects of a wound received in the First World War, he played only one innings in 1920 and never appeared afterwards.
