Indian Premier League, 2nd match: Kings XI Punjab v Chennai Super Kings at Mohali, Apr 19, 2008
Chennai Super Kings won by 33 runs
19 April 2008 - day/night match (20-over match)

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the second IPL match. We're in Mohali today where the Kings XI Punjab are up against Chennai Super Kings. So many kings and it promises to be a mouth-watering affair. Brendon McCullum has already set the bar for the tournament with his manic innings last night and it's time to see if anyone can match him here.

This is Siddhartha Vaidyanathan and I will be bringing you all the action. In case you missed any of the action yesterday you can catch up with S Rajesh's report here. Also read other pieces here, here and here.

Toss: Mahendra Singh Dhoni has done it. Not only has he won the toss but chosen to bat, something Rahul Dravid decided against yesterday. So Chennai bat on what looks like a belter.

If you'd like to offer feedback on our live commentary, please click here.

Greg Chappell is conducting the toss. About a year back he was coaching the Indian side, now he's asking Dhoni and Yuvraj about their decisions at the toss. Talk of changing roles.

Chennai: 1 Matthew Hayden, 2 Parthiv Patel, 3 S Badrinath, 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt, wk), 7 Jacob Oram, 8 Joginder Sharma, 9 Manpreet Gony, 10 P Amarnath, 11 Muttiah Muralitharan.

Punjab: 1 Karan Goel, 2 James Hopes, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Simon Katich, 6 Pankaj Dharmani, 7 Irfan Pathan, 8 Brett Lee, 9 Piyush Chawla, 10 Wilkin Mota, 11 Sreesanth

Any shockers? No Mahela Jayawardene for Punjab. That's a bit surprising. Manpreet Gony is a talented domestic medium-pacer for Chennai. Watch out for headlines like 'Gony and Dhoni star' ... Jacob Oram, turning out for Chennai, comes with an explosive quality, as does Yuvraj Singh, the Punjab captain.

Sunny day in Mohali. The last ball that Joginder Sharma's bowled in a Twenty20 was a World Cup winning moment. Watch out for Karan Goel, a young batsman who's got tongues wagging in Punjab. Don't we all love to wag 'em.

Brett Lee is likely to take the new ball and will mostly be up against Matthew Hayden. NSW takes on Queensland in Mohali. Now that's what I call globalisation. Just realised there is no Stephen Fleming in the Chennai side. One of my lady friends termed him as the "most handsome man in cricket" yesterday. I hope her heart isn't broken now.

Preity Zinta is talking to a television presenter. She fits so perfectly on a cricket field. "Please pray for my team," she signs off. Anything for you, Preity.

In case any of you are interested, my lady friend (the Fleming lover) is fuming. "Dhoni is being ruthless again," she rages. Now let's stop it here. What I am really interested to see is the cheerleaders that these two teams can offer. Expect some Punjabi pop to scare the pilots (the airport is very close to the ground, by the way). Greg Chappell has given some pearls of wisdom without using the word "process". How things change.

Now we're set. Hayden walks out with Parthiv in what looks like a comical scene. One a giant, another a midget. Brett Lee is up against them. Good on ye Binger.

Two slips and a gully. Does it matter? Where are the cheerleaders? Parthiv on strike

Lee to Patel, no run, Full and outside off, left alone by Parthiv. Now that's what I call a solid start

Lee to Patel, no run, straighter this time, 137.6kph, short of a length, tapped away back to the bowler, Parthiv on his toes for this one

Lee to Patel, 1 run, fuller and slightly outside off, driven tentatively to mid-off and takes off for a quick single, Yuvraj has a chance to get a direct hit, but he misfields

Lee to Hayden, no run, full and driven towards cover, straight to the fielder

Lee to Hayden, FOUR, Now that's Hayden for you, walking down the track and swatting Lee to midwicket for four, speedy outfield and that races away, this is the Aussie rivalry we've been waiting for

Lee to Hayden, no run, short of a length, Hayden tries to swing towards the on side and misses

End of over 1 (5 runs) Chennai Super Kings 5/0 (RR: 5.00)

    • PA Patel 1 (3b)

Sreesanth to share the new ball

Sreesanth to Patel, FOUR, And how he wishes he hadn't, full and outside off, Parthiv rattles it crisply past cover for four, boom that went, Sreesanth must have read too much into this 'Spirit of cricket' pledge

Second slip has gone away

Sreesanth to Patel, FOUR, edged and through where second slip would have been, might not have carried but that is four more, Parthiv is going after Sreesanth in style

Sreesanth to Patel, FOUR, three in a row, what a ripper, full and outside off and Sreesanth is clobbered through cover again, the fielder dives but was never going to get there, Parthiv on a roll here

Sreesanth to Patel, 2 runs, that was nearly one more, neatly clattered past point but the point fielder (Hopes) got his hands to it, so that's only two, this is sloppy stuff from Sreesanth.

Sajan chuckles: "Parthiv's neck will be in trouble if Hayden continues to give advice"

Sreesanth to Patel, 1 wide, round the wicket this time, wide of the stumps, too wide in fact, Parthiv lets it go and that's called wide

Sreesanth to Patel, no run, full and outside off, driven but can't get the timing, Sreesanth has bowled a dot ball, now that's a big moment

Sreesanth to Patel, no run, good finish to the over, full and straight, driven back to the bowler

End of over 2 (15 runs) Chennai Super Kings 20/0 (RR: 10.00)

    • PA Patel 15 (9b 3x4)

If you'd like to offer feedback on our live commentary, please click here. . Lee back to Hayden

Lee to Hayden, no run, Now that's a ball that you would see on the first day at the Gabba. Short of a length, rising outside off, Hayden pokes, beaten by the bounce, through to the keeper, glorious cricket

Karan Gupta on email: "Nasty commentary today. you are firing on all cylinders. Or may be it's just the hangover from yesterday. Or a stiff neck after McCullum's sky-rockets yesterday. Or All."

Lee to Hayden, (no ball) FOUR, full and towards the leg side, Hayden makes room and swats it straight past mid-on for four, that's a no-ball and it's the tournament's first free-hit

Lee to Hayden, no run, Hayden makes room and tries to smash that towards Delhi, inside edge rattles the stumps but it doesn't matter, rarely has such a rattling of timber prompted such muted reactions

Lee to Hayden, 1 run, short ball, Hayden tries to swat it away but can't get the timing, falls just short of the short fine leg, they scamper a single

Lee to Patel, OUT, what a corker! short of a length, rising, speedy and outside off, takes off after pitching and snicks the outside edge of Parthiv's bat, through to the keeper and the umpire nods his head. Parthiv had no idea about that one. That was a Lee special.

PA Patel c †Sangakkara b Lee 15 (10b 3x4 0x6) SR: 150.00

Michael Hussey comes in. Now two Aussies for Lee to handle.

Lee to Hussey, 1 run, Straight and on the body, defended cautiously. This is Pura Cup action in Mohali. NSW v Queensland and WA

Vipul Mistry: "I hope Parthiv Patel continues his good work. He can be India's own "Pocket size Dynamo" like Kalu." A tad too late.

Lee to Hayden, no run, short of a length, defended off the back foot, fine over from Lee

End of over 3 (7 runs) Chennai Super Kings 27/1 (RR: 9.00)

    • ML Hayden 9 (8b 2x4)
    • MEK Hussey 1 (1b)
    • B Lee 2-0-12-1
    • S Sreesanth 1-0-15-0

Sreesanth to continue. Raghunathan: "Sreesanth needs to chill. A little bit of dancing will help." And he loses his run-up. Now that's one way to chill.

Sreesanth to Hussey, no run, 140.4kph, that was a good length ball outside off, Hussey drives but can't make contact, Sangakkara is applauding Sreesanth feverishly, fine ball

Sreesanth to Hussey, no run, good length again, moving away outside off, left alone, this looks like what experts call a 'sporting wicket'. Something in it for everyone. The crowds slowly filling up.

Sreesanth to Hussey, 1 run, short of a length, glided away to third man, Irfan Pathan is cleaning up at third man, surprising he's not opening the bowling

Sreesanth to Hayden, 1 run, full and outside off, Hayden backs away and looks to tee off, can't time it properly, though, and the bottom edge trickles to the on side, Sreesanth to Hayden and no verbals yet! This is just not IPL

Sreesanth to Hussey, no run, driven sweetly to covers but fine fielding by Goel in the covers, that was racing away for four but the local lad pulls off a stop

Sreesanth to Hussey, FOUR, full again, Hussey charges down the track as if there's no tomorrow and lofts over extra cover for four, it's sliced away and makes its way in the gap, now that's the sort of shot that makes you say 'It doesn't matter how they come ..." .. Actually an effective one that

End of over 4 (6 runs) Chennai Super Kings 33/1 (RR: 8.25)

    • MEK Hussey 6 (6b 1x4)
    • ML Hayden 10 (9b 2x4)
    • S Sreesanth 2-0-21-0
    • B Lee 2-0-12-1

Lee to Hayden, no run, full and straight, Lee is doing it well here, driven back down the ground, why does the camera keep on showing Fleming? Ok, ok. Enough

Lee to Hayden, 1 leg bye, Fine slow ball, that was delivered at 112kph, swinging towards the pads too, that foxed Hayden, he dabs it to the off side and gets a quick one

Lee to Hussey, FOUR, super shot, full and on off, spanked away through the covers for four, good placement between mid-off and cover, crackles away to the fence

Lee to Hussey, FOUR, and again, this time it's on the pads and whipped away effortlessly through midwicket, the fielder gives it a chase but can't get there, this is a quick outfield and they've also brought the ropes in, so it makes it easier for the batsmen

Lee to Hussey, no run, changes his length, slightly shorter, tucked away to the leg side

Lee to Hussey, no run, tapped to the off side but Goel is there, diving and stopping the single, he's already making an impression. Good comeback from Lee after a minor hammering.

End of over 5 (9 runs) Chennai Super Kings 42/1 (RR: 8.40)

    • MEK Hussey 14 (10b 3x4)
    • ML Hayden 10 (11b 2x4)
    • B Lee 3-0-20-1
    • S Sreesanth 2-0-21-0

James Hopes comes on to replace Sreesanth. Now it's four Australians (two batsmen and two bowlers).

Hopes to Hayden, FOUR, dropped, Hayden walking down the track and tries to smash him over mid-on straight away, but that's not that well timed, it ballons up towards Wilkin Mota at mid-on but he mis-times his jump and fluffs the chance, that runs away, it could be a costly miss

Hopes to Hayden, SIX, and he makes 'em pay, down the track and smoked away way, way over long-off for six, that's a biggie, teeing off with remarkable ease. What was that about rubbing salt into wounds?

Hopes to Hayden, no run, gives himself room and tries to smash it over midwicket but that was a slower ball and he couldn't make contact, wild hoick that

Hopes to Hayden, 1 run, another swish, this is like a windmill now, leading edge sails high and between the mid-off and cover fielders. Just realised Hopes is Queensland too. This is an inter-state rivalry now.

Hopes to Hussey, no run, pushed to the off side, better length this time, not giving Hayden the room to free his arms

Hopes to Hussey, no run, a good end to the over after all, good length and outside off, drives and misses, through to the keeper

End of over 6 (11 runs) Chennai Super Kings 53/1 (RR: 8.83)

    • MEK Hussey 14 (12b 3x4)
    • ML Hayden 21 (15b 3x4 1x6)
    • JR Hopes 1-0-11-0
    • B Lee 3-0-20-1

Irfan Pathan breaks the Aussie dominance. On to replace Lee now. Yuvraj making some elaborate field adjustments.

Syed Sadat Hassan: "The start of IPL is making real cricket lover sick. the auctioning, the firework, the involvement of rich and famous, and bull dozing ICL from not competing, and the talk of Champions trophy tournament for 20's all makes one feel the good old days of cricket is over, and its all the talk of money, money, and exhibition of the power money. one always thought cricket is gentlemens' game, but is it seeing IPL's working as corporation for business?"

Pathan to Hayden, FOUR, full ball, Hayden backs away and Pathan follows him, Hayden tries to smash it over midwicket but an inside edge runs away to fine leg for four, that's one way you can be good at placement

Sangakkara standing up to the batsman now.

Pathan to Hayden, OUT, bowled 'em! good length ball outside off, Hayden tries to pummel it through the leg side but can only get an inside edge onto the stumps, crack goes the timber and Punjab have struck. Hayden goes after a sweet cameo.

Now I wonder if Sangakkara said anything in Hayden's ear. I can keep wondering.

ML Hayden b Pathan 25 (17b 4x4 1x6) SR: 147.05

Dhoni enters. The most valued played in the IPL. A slip in place

Pathan to Dhoni, 1 run, short of a length, Dhoni drives to cover and takes off for a quick single

Pathan to Hussey, 2 runs, short and pulled away towards midwicket, that's racing away towards the ropes but Piyush Chawla puts in a good dive, they scamper three but a good save

Pathan to Hussey, 1 run, full and outside off, thickish edge towards point, another quick single, not a bad over from Irfan this

Pathan to Dhoni, 1 run, a little hop down the track, tries to flick towards leg but pads it away to cover, another quick run

Hopes to Dhoni, OUT, Hopes strikes! full and outside off, jagging back in, Dhoni trapped on the back foot and tries to tap it to the off side, huge appeal straight away and Mark Benson gives that one, looked as if there could have been an inside edge there, but Dhoni walks back quickly

MS Dhoni lbw b Hopes 2 (3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

Suresh Raina walks in

Hopes to Raina, 1 run, short of a length, tapped to the off side for a quick single, direct hit but Raina is quick, he's in

Hopes to Hussey, no run, 132.5kph, full and outside off, Hussey punches it to the off side carefully,

Hopes to Hussey, 1 run, down the track and tries to swat it over mid-on, can't get the timing right, straight to the fielder

Dunga: "I don't believe that IPL is hurting cricket - it shall be better, though, if as Ricky Ponting said, they make an international window. It's helping A) bring twenty20 into a main format of the game and B) able to ease youngsters in to the game, and also older players who are close to retirement can go out of their heavy international commitments and play a season inside India to to let themself leave the game without the heartbreak some players might find."

Hopes to Raina, SIX, short ball but Raina is ready, on the back foot and clobbers it over square leg for six, that's an impressive shot from Raina, gets the Chennai camp all geed up

Hopes to Raina, no run, full and outside off, a bit of movement away from the bat, beats the outside edge

Pathan to Hussey, 1 run, slower one this time, straight too, Hussey just turns it away towards midwicket, easy single

Pathan to Raina, FOUR, down the leg side and that's bread and butter for Raina, tucked away neatly down to fine leg for four, Pathan lets out some venom

Pathan to Raina, 1 run, slight change of pace again, Raina pushes in the air but he was a bit too early on that, falls in the gap and they pick up a single

Pathan to Hussey, no run, 135.1kph, yorker length this time, well done, Hussey can only dig it out, back down the ground

Pathan to Hussey, SIX, that's disappeared over midwicket for six, full and on off, Hussey just wind-mills that over the in-field for six, too predictable from Irfan, more venom

Chennai have lost three wickets but the run-rate looks rosy alright. Motoring along. Kris Srikkanth is cheering from the dug-out. Now would he have loved T20 or what.

A bigger crowd in now. Lot of animated ones in there. Half the innings gone and Piyush Chawla is on now. Legbreaks and googlies, here we come.

Chawla to Hussey, SIX, over the wicket and tossed up, Hussey bull-dozes his way down the ground and pulverises that way over midwicket for a big one. Welcome aboard Piyush. Hussy launched himself into that one, almost as if it was pre-meditated.

Chawla to Hussey, 1 run, quicker one this time, slightly short too, pulled away for a single

Chawla to Raina, 2 runs, quicker again, outside off, Raina goes for the slog sweep but can manage only elevation and no distance, drops in the outfield like a golf shot

Chawla to Raina, no run, better ball that, straight and on middle, tucked away to the leg side

Chawla and Raina play for Uttar Pradesh, by the way.

Chawla to Raina, SIX, huge! short and drifting on the pads, Raina rocks back and wallops that way over square leg for a big six, that sails into the crowds, what a blitzer, Chawla looks a bit lost here.

Chawla to Raina, FOUR, full one this time and that's a straight-drive with class written all over it, full face of the bat and past the bowler for a meaty four, super shot that, classical shots merging with the slogs, what an over

Goel to Hussey, 1 run, dabbed towards short fine leg and takes off for a single, that would have been close but Sangakkara has made a mess of the take, Raina gets home

Mota to Raina, OUT, Mota breaks through, good length ball and slightly wide again, Raina hammers it towards long-on but can't get the timing, straight down Irfan Pathan's throat, he gurgles that one without any problems. Mota plays for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy but is starring for Punjab here.

Hopes to Badrinath, SIX, slower one, but Badri detects that early, stands back, moves across and belts it way over square leg for a big six, he's showing his worth here

Hopes to Badrinath, SIX, they've done it, the new highest total in the tournament, Badri just waits for the full one and powders it way over midwicket for a six, that a finish he's providing

Hopes to Hussey, SIX, that's the neatest hit of the last two balls, Hussey waits for a full ball and smoothly blitzes it over long-on for a six, that's pure timing, what a clean hit

Hopes to Hussey, 2 runs, on the pads, scooped away to backward square leg and Sreesanth pulls off a good save in the boundary, they get three and finish on 240. This just gets bigger and bigger. 25 off the last over. What a finish!
