Indian Premier League - 1st match

Chennai Super Kings v Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians won by 19 runs

The players take their positions. Tendulkar walks out. Lots the empty seats despite the sell-out. It should fill up soon. Here we go. ON ON! Jayasuriya takes strike to Gony.

Toss: Ravi Shastri bellows "South Africa are you ready? " at the toss. Dhoni holds up the proceedings. What have we here? It seems Dhoni isn't sure of his team. Shastri bellows again. Take 2! Modi spins the coin. Dhoni has won it. Chennai will bowl first. Not surprising. We'll get you the teams shortly. Hang in there.

Teams: Mumbai Indians: Tendulkar, Jayasuriya, Dhawan, Duminy, Bravo, Nayar, Pinal shah, Harbhajan singh, Zaheer khan, Malinga, Raje

Chennai Super Kings: hayden, Patel, raina, badrinath, thushara, oram, flintoff, joginder sharma, dhoni, gony, ashwin

Modi declares the IPL 2009 open. It's official. Let the games begin.

Have you joined the IPL fantasy league yet? It's loads of fun. There are two versions of this for the IPL (Salary cap and Pick 'em). Check it out.

Let's just reflect a bit on the last few weeks in the build up. This tournament almost never happened, with the general elections assuming the No.1 priority in India. The Home Ministry couldn't guarantee the required security for the IPL, forcing the organisers to change their plans. The schedule was tossed back and forth between the IPL and the Indian government and in the end it landed up in the nearest paper shredder. They had to look for an alternative country and thankfully South Africa stepped up. England wouldn't have been the practical option.

12.05: It's brightened up a bit. Phew.

12pm: We should have been bringing you the toss now but the covers have only just come off the square. Let's cut to the pitch report. The experts say there will be a bit of lateral movement and the overcast conditions may prompt the captain to field first. Driving on the up will not be very easy.

11.48: Ok here's another weather update but I'm afraid the news isn't terribly exciting. It's drizzling in Cape Town but no reason to panic, as I was told. The toss is supposed to happen 12 minutes from now but that might be delayed. Just saw images of the ground and it looks a bit murky. Ouch.

Here's something for you to do (and you only have another 8 minutes to do it!) - Predict the exact number of 4s and 6s for the day in our new Boundary Meter contest and win iPod Shuffle daily!

There were 1702 fours and 622 sixes in last year's IPL. Can this edition beat that? Rush! Time's running out.

Batsmen may not find it very easy this time to match that given the tournament's in South Africa. If you ask me, I don't want to see too many high-scoring games this time. An exciting contest between bat and ball is the real thing.

11.30am local time: Exactly one year to this day, the frenzy called the IPL returns. Good day to all of you and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the opening match of IPL 2, between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians at Newlands in Cape Town. This is Kanishkaa Balachandran bringing you the commentary for the next few hours.

Before I jabber away, let me give you the weather update. We heard Cape Town was quite foggy this morning, with a bit of rain in the air. However it is expected to clear off. We'll keep you informed.

There was also a bit of confusion about the opening ceremony. It will be held after the second match today, at 19.30 South Africa time. Defeats the purpose of an 'opening' ceremony but what's one without fireworks and a starry night sky anyway? A 19.30 start means 11 pm back home in India. That should wreck all your carefully laid-out Saturday night movie plans. But it should be well worth it. We were treated to an extravagant one last year in Bangalore and the one at Newlands in 2003 a day before the World Cup was even more glitzy.

A dog makes an appearance near square leg, that wasn't part of the plan. And it refuses to leave! Slow over rate? Blame it on the dog. Still refuses to go.One of the fielders (I think Gony) tries to distract the dog with the ball but does it care? Nope. Another security official hands out a sandwich. Everyone's in splits. It finally obliges with the food but stays put. I hope the match referee is counting the minutes. It's taking the whole evening! Baha Men's "Who let the dogs out" comes to mind. Finally, it leaves the field and in case we forgot we have a match on! What breed is it? I wish I knew.

Ok now for the latest innovation to hit the IPL - the 7.5 minute ad-break! All this to get more advertisements and rake in more money. This story on Cricinfo attracted a lot of feedback. It's not such a bad thing for us commentators. Allows us to take a breather and read some of your mails.

More on Page 2: Lawrence Booth's diary from South Africa is here.

Rony: "The dog was a fox hound. It is usually brownish in color. The black color is not that rare either.."

Sharad: "The doggy break must have given extra few crores to the IPL by squeezing many ads during that time. Wonder if that was deliberate ??"

19.6

Flintoff to Tendulkar, FOUR, cracking way to end the innings! He makes room but the attempted yorker doesnt come off well, it's a pitched up delivery and he crashes it past deep extra cover

Tendulkar leads the way for Mumbai with an unbeaten 59. His experience made the difference on a pitch which didn't make batting look very easy. The ball stopped on the batsmen on a few occasions. Nayar looked in good nick before falling to the slower ball. It's not a massive target but competitive enough.

Confusion about the last ball of the 17th over. The scorers have fixed it. Thanks for the mails.
