Indian Premier League - 1st match

Deccan Chargers v Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders won by 11 runs

The teams are out. Manoj Tiwary marks his guard. Vaas marks his run-up. Hodge at the other end. Two slips in place. Koertzen asks the concerned parties if they're ready! It was heard on the loudspeaker

Teams A quick run through the overseas players for KKR - Hodge, Angelo Mathews, Owais Shah and Charl Langeveldt.

Deccan - Gilchrist, Gibbs, Symonds and Vaas. The full teams will be up soon.

Toss time (8.00pm) . Shastri has enough energy to bellow again. He talks to Gilly first. Now Harsha Bhogle chats with Ganguly. "The boundaries are getting shorter by the day," says Ganguly. He assures he's the captain for the next game too....in case you had any doubts.

"Mumbai are you ready?" No doubt who just said that.

Gilchrist has won the toss and Deccan will bowl first. He reckons anything above 150 will be competitive. Anirudh Singh will be making his IPL debut. You will recall Anirudh from the ICL, where he played for the Hyderabad Heroes. He's a left-handed middle order batsman.

Ganguly's quite happy to bat first. We'll have the full teams up soon.

7.51 pm: Thanks George. None of us here were dancing in the ceiling, like Lionel Richie just sang. At the moment we're listening to Sidhu fire away. He's wearing a strange jacket.

7.50 pm: Right, the teams are warming up now. The floating white thing is being brought to earth. The cricket isn't far away. Over to Kanishkaa for the toss and the start of the game.

7.45 pm: Sidharth Monga has demanded I apologise for saying in the preview that the match will begin at 8.00pm. It's quarter to, and Lionel Ritchie has just entered the DY Patil. Should have written match starts whenever opening ceremony ends.

"They need Himesh Reshmiya," says Frioz. I, reluctantly, agree. Wonder how long it'll take from them to get the field match-ready once this ends.

"Don't we have enough Bollywood in the IPL already? Do we really need more song and dance routine before the cricket! All those who really care for this drama put your hands up," says Kartik. Mine are down.

7.30 pm: The lovely Deepika Padukone makes her appearance as the Black Eyed Peas have a feeling that tonight's going to be a good good night. It's actually going to be a long long night. And finally there's some Bollywood music, that should get the people at DY Patil going.

"Hey Mumbai, do you want to twist?" asks Deepika. I'm not sure I understand what she means. We're being treated to a group of people practicing their light-sabre skills now. Graceful, they are. Luke Skywalker, they are not.

All you Twitter users can get wicket alerts directly to your mobile phone. A welcome distraction on a dull day at work for sure. Are any of you working at the moment?

7.15 pm: Prabhu's serious about his cricket in the midst of lit-up people walking around the stadium in weird colours. "KKR should open with the ICL star Ganapathy Vignesh," he says.

The toss is supposedly in 15 minutes. But that looks unlikely, because there's a drummer doing his thing from behind a floating white drape. The floating white drape is a screen! And we're watching videos of IPL 2008, to the tune of 'The heat is on'.

"Toss will take place only after 30 minutes but I guess IPL is back to India and it's okay according to IST - Indian Stretchable Time," says a clever reader.

7.05: There's this big, white, balloon-cloth like structure floating over the field. There's a ring of people dressed in white, with triangular head dresses standing around the boundary. "Wise men say only fools rush in ..." it's UB40. With some dancers. Akon was more entertaining, marginally.

"Deccan Chargers will win the game," says Sivanand. I had almost forgotten there was a game to follow. It's ABBA revival now. "Mama mia, here we go again!" Certainly more energetic than UB40. Wonder how many people at the DY Patil had heard of ABBA Revival before tonight. At least their raising the tempo.

6.55 pm: Lalit Modi's addressing the world now. "We may have been physically absent last year but we were with you heart and soul ..." Modi's comparing the IPL's evolution to something like Shakespeare's seven ages of man. Childhood, adolescence, adulthood. Does he know what's next?

6.45 pm: "The IPL is back," booms Ravi Shastri, promising those at the DY Patil a "spectacular evening". I've been told that the stadium is about 40% full.

The eight captains are trooping on the field to affirm their commitment to the Spirit of Cricket. Gilchrist is the first to sign the banner. Ganguly is next and he looks older than last year. Warney's next, and he looks younger, spiky hair and all. Gambhir is leading Delhi this year, not Sehwag. Gambhir always looks intense.

Shastri's going to have a hoarse voice by the end of this. "Captain Cool," he screams, calling Dhoni up, then gushes over Sangakkara, calling him magnificent. Kumble's the second last going up, but the crowd are already chanting the next captain's name ... "Sachin, Sachin". The decibel levels soar as he walks up. Terrific.

6.30 pm: Navjot Sidhu's back! He's part of the pre-match programming. How long before we hear, "The ball went so high, it kissed an air hostess before it came down?"

The Mumbai Indians have a new strip, there's a silver band running across the shoulders which Sachin Tendulkar says stands for the Bandra-Worli sea link. Tendulkar's been asked who he thinks will be Mumbai's toughest competition. He beats around the bush before evading the question!

This weekend also sees the start of the 2010 Formula One season and India not only have a team to follow - Force India - but also a driver - Karun Chandhok. For live commentary, analysis, reports and photos, check out our sister site ESPNF1

6.15 pm: Welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the 60-match behemoth that is IPL 2010. Today's opening game is between the defending champions, Deccan Chargers, and Kolkata Knight Riders, for whom the only way is up. The match, which is at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai, will be preceded by an opening ceremony ... if you're fans of Lionel Ritchie, UB40 or Abba Revival, don't miss it. If not ... the cricket begins at 8.00 pm. George Binoy and Kanishkaa Balachandiran will be your commentators today ...

"We're back [in India]," says a super enthusiastic Lalit Modi. "We're going to give them a show over the next 46 days." He's speaking way too fast for me to type it all down ... excited, gung-ho, ready to start, is the gist of his message. He's waving to the crowd now, the DY Patil isn't full as yet, but it will get there.
