Brigadier Edward Williams, CBE, who died on January 20 at the age of 84, was in the Winchester XIs of 1909 and 1910, and served several Army sides between the wars with distinction as a batsman and cover fielder. In 1923 he made 97 against the Navy, following it with 106 in 1925 and 228 the next season. In 1925 he had scored a double-century against Oxford University, off whose bowling eight years later he made 142 for Free Foresters. All these innings were ranked first-class.
