Andy Clarke enjoyed a brief and unexpected career with Sussex in 1988 and 1989 when he took a sabbatical from his work as an insurance underwriter following a successful trial at Hove. He had been bowling legspin for a decade for his Brighton club when the call game, all the more surprising as this was at a time when legspin was considered all but extinct in England. In 1988 he took 44 wickets at 37.50 but appeared little in 1989. He went on to enjoy a decade with Buckinghamshire.
