A medium-pace bowler and middle-order batsman, Zimbabwe-born Richard Halsall played once in his homeland in the Logan Cup, taking 1 for 43 as an opening bowler in both innings for Mashonaland Country Districts. He moved to England and studied at Cambridge University, playing for them in 1999 when he won a Blue. He also turned out a few times for Sussex 2nd XI. He went from university into teaching, first at Brighton College and then as director of sport at Wellington College. At the same time he was establishing a reputation as a coach, managing the England Under-15 side and working as a fielding coach at Sussex. He was appointed England's fielding coach in late 2007 and also took on the role of assistant coach in 2011.
