Howard Jeffrey was an excellent all-round sportsman who played twice for Leicestershire in 1964 as an opening medium-fast bowler. He represented England schools at hurdles and cricket, but it was at rugby he really excelled, playing for North of England versus New Zealand and for the North West Counties versus Australia. He later played rugby for Coventry when it was considered to be the strongest club in England. He was a PE teacher by profession and eventually became head of PE at Whitehaven Grammar School and when he retired he was deputy head at Netherhall School, Maryport.
