Zimbabwe in New Zealand Test Match

New Zealand v Zimbabwe

New Zealand won by an innings and 301 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

9.55am Good morning and welcome to the battle of the Taylors, or should I say New Zealand v Zimbabwe, at McLean Park in Napier. This one-off Test may appear to be a slightly random fixture in the crowded calendar, but nevertheless holds much importance for both sides. New Zealand will be looking to carry on from their historic Test victory over Australia in Hobart, while Zimbabwe will be looking to continue their reintegration into Test cricket with a good performance.

The first important news of the day is that Zimbabwe have won the toss and are bowling first . Zimbabwe have two debutants in Forster Mutizwa, who has had a stellar season with the bat in Zimbabwe's domestic first-class competition, the Logan Cup, and fast bowler Shingi Masakadza, brother of the batsman Hamilton. Graeme Cremer, the leg-spinner, is playing as the veteran left-armer Ray Price is out with a groin injury.

The Zimbabwe line-up is: Mawoyo, H Masakadza, Mutizwa, B Taylor (c), Taibu (wk), Waller, Chakabva, Cremer, S Mazakadza, Vitori, Jarvis, Chigumbura (12th man).

New Zealand's line-up is as expected: B McCullum, Guptill, Williamson, R Taylor (c), Brownlie, Vettori, Watling (wk), Bracewell, Southee, Boult, C Martin, Wells (12th man).

First comment of the day from Mike. No prizes for guessing where he's from: "Loads of Zimbabweans around the world fancy our chances in this match, remember Bulawayo were we should of won, Waller to star again!!!"

The pitch report from Simon Doull shows substantially more grass on the pitch than is usual for a Napier wicket, by far and away the best batting track in New Zealand. But it is a nice even covering across the wicket and is relatively thin on top, giving it a much less threatening look than the Hobart wicket which New Zealand coach John Wright was hoping to emulate. Doull thinks Zimbabwe will need to have the hosts four or five down by lunch if they want to make the most of the fresh morning conditions.

The weather is thankfully nice and sunny in Napier, after a rather wet summer in New Zealand over the Christmas and New Year holiday period. The Hawkes Bay region is normally the best place to go though if you're searching for sunshine in a nation where the rain often falls at the most inopportune of moments, so it's good to see it living up to its reputation!

This is Avi Singh on scoring and commentary duties for this Test match. For the Twitterati out there among you, feel free to follow me on Twitter @MannerOfSpeakin.

Andrew Fernando will be providing you with match reports throughout the day, his toss report will be up on the home page any moment now.

While we wait for play to begin, do check out the match preview by our erstwhile South African correspondent Firdose Moonda, who is also on Twitter @FirdoseM. She is definitely worth following!

Righto, just about set to go, Kyle Jarvis has the new ball with three slips and a gully in place to McCullum. Here we go!

0.1

Jarvis to McCullum, no run, lets the first ball of the match go outside off, swung away nicely through to the keeper

0.2

0.3

Jarvis to McCullum, no run, lets another out-swinger go through to the keeper outside off

0.4

Jarvis to McCullum, no run, ooh, comes forward to defend a fuller out-swinger, bat nicks pad but misses ball, Zimbabwean appeal for caught behind turned down

0.5

Jarvis to McCullum, no run, beaten again, squared up by a good length ball on off, goes pushing at it with the hands, could have let it go

0.6

Jarvis to McCullum, no run, maiden over to start with as McCullum comes a touch forward and blocks the ball into the off-side, thinks of a quick single but decides against it

4.3

Jarvis to McCullum, no run, lets this shorter lifting ball go through to the keeper outside off

7.6

Vitori to Guptill, no run, tries to bang in the bouncer but it is well down leg and he ducks but probably didn't need to as it was well away from him

Vitori to Guptill, 1 run, short on leg but this one doesn't rise and he can tuck it safely into the gap on the leg side

9.4

Vitori to McCullum, 3 runs, well well, Brendan Taylor took the gully out, so what does McCullum do? Feels for a full ball on middle and edges the attempted defensive stroke through the gully region

13.6

Jarvis to McCullum, 1 run, this time gets well forward to defend to the left of cover, races off for the single and Guptill comfortably beats the throw into the keeper's end
