John Williams was a right-arm seamer who opened the bowling as a 19-year-old for Northern Districts against the Australians in a non first-class match in 1959-60 and then disappeared for more than a decade. He resurfaced and played one season for Auckland, in 1971-72, with reasonable success considering he was over 30 at the time. On his Plunkett Shield debut he took 4 for 52 and 4 for 49 in an innings defeat over Central Districts but only aggregated 4 for 150 in his other three Shield games that season. He played one more first-class game, against the touring Australians, in 1973-74 and a domestic one-day match in 1974-75, failing to take a wicket on either occasion.
