A professional soldier who then became a teacher, Major David Gay played twice for Sussex in 1949 and twice for Combined Services as a medium-pace bowler earlier in the same summer. In World War Two he won the MC for an attempted rescue in Italy which one witness described as the bravest action he had ever seen.
