Afridi to miss second ODI due to back injury

23

Shahid Afridi, the Pakistan allrounder, has been ruled out of the second ODI against Australia in Abu Dhabi, but is expected to recover in time for the third ODI to be played on September 3. Left-arm fast bowler Junaid Khan is likely to replace Afridi in the XI - the only change expected in the Pakistan line-up. Afridi sustained a back strain during the practice session on Thursday.

"He picked up a back strain yesterday night [Thursday] during the practice session," Pakistan team manager Naveed Akram Cheema told ESPNcricinfo. "So far, he isn't available for today's game as he has been advised indefinite rest by the doctor. I can't say much about the next game but if he recovers in time, he will definitely be in the side. We have ample options to replace him but I can't reveal the team's plan. It will be revealed at the toss."

During the first ODI in Sharjah, Afridi bowled his 10 overs for 37 runs and picked up the wicket of Australia opener Matthew Wade. However while batting, he was out off his first ball, sparking a lower-order collapse that left them defending a moderate total of 198. Australia won that match by four wickets in the 49th over.

Big loss! He will be back soon! Now Pakistan need to make another 30-40 runs as Saeed, Hafeez & afridi are old best and very economical in these conditions ...... Pak will win if misbah don't get chance batting, misbah is losser and he can not win game with his batting then he blames Lower order!

Get well soon boom boom. Buddy a rest might do a good for you. You need to keep it simple with batting and just play normal game. I hope you will come good.

What?! A 16 year old with a back injury... that's terrible.

  • Stark62 on August 31, 2012, 18:33 GMT

This has turned out to be a major setback!!

Rehman got clobbered around the park and there isn't an aggressive batsmen like Afridi available to lower the required run rate.

apparently, all the diggas have received the news of Afridi resting with some celebration...

how most of baddy saying he should retire etc etc. i think he is having a tough time as each and every player has in his career instead of to support we just de moralize him not a good treatment with a legend i would say

Afridi is a wicket taking bowler, it's a loss for Pakistan. In third game Pakistan should replace Sohail Tanvir with Afridi. Average bowlers like Sohail Tanvir will not bother Australian batsmen. Pakistan should play with 4 spinners & Junaid Khan.

  • ahabib on August 31, 2012, 16:39 GMT

Afridi should take a good long long rest. Back injuries can be tricky. And maybe also get some coaching on how to bat.

  • Ra_Thore on August 31, 2012, 15:42 GMT

Good excuse for someone who does not know how to bat anymore.

  • ChakdePak on August 31, 2012, 15:13 GMT

Nothing loss for Pakistan. It's a good move, he hasn't been doing well since quite long time.

Hope you get well soon afridi; wanna see u in action in the next ODI

Good for Pakistan. Afridi had been inconsistant with his performance with batting. A good chance for youngster like Junaid to prove himself & he is more likely to perform better as Afridi would have been in pressure after duck in the 1st game. Misbah's staying on the wicket is crucial for Pakistan as he is the one who can guide team to 50 overs by fortifying one end.
