Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

Unmar Gul has the ball. Three slips, a gully and a short leg. Off we go.

9.58am The players are making their way out. Adnan Akmal, nervous and excited, gears up. Big day for the Akmal family, their third representative in the national team. Smith and Alviro walk out. I'm Sid Talya, your commentator for this game, and I'll be joined by Nitin Sundar and Siddarth Ravindran later on. Gnasher McGlashan is our bulletin writer for this match, and he's got the toss summary ready so read on.

Yousuf, we are told, has injured his leg.

Qazi: "Looking forward to the day when all three brothers will play in the same match, switching wicket keeper positions every 10 overs or so... Hopefully one of them can catch!"

9.50am Have you checked our specials panel for the day. Here's Shane Warne saying England have their best shot at the Ashes in 20 years. Australia's not been a great place for spinners, writes our stats man S Rajesh so Swanny better watch out. Catch up with all that's happened on this tour so far on the series page.

Narada sends us this: "Is this the first time three brothers have kept wicket for their country within a year? Kamran Akmal was the wicketkeeper earlier in the year, and Umar Akmal took the gloves when Haider went missing. And now comes in Adnan Akmal." Certainly looks like it.

9.45am The Zulqarnain saga has dominated cricket headlines over the last few days but there is plenty of cricket happening around the world to keep us sane. India and New Zealand are playing each other in Hyderabad. The Kiwis have started well, and have surprised many with their performance this series. There's also the World Cricket League Division 8 taking place in Kuwait where the hosts are currently taking on Germany in the final.

9.40am: Still another 20 minutes to go before the start. It's an empty stadium in Dubai, predictably so on a hot day even though it's a holiday. The surface looks dry, the experts reckon there might be a bit of turn pretty early on in the Test and will last throughout.

Toss: Smith has won the toss and opted to bat. He reckons there is a bit of moisture on the track but overall he thinks it'll favour batting. South Africa have gone in with two spinners. Misbah says he has captained Pakistan in a couple of games before and admits it's always pressure when captaining Pakistan. Mohammad Yousuf is not playing, he's injured. Botha and Harris are the two spinners for South Africa, while Adnan Akmal replaces Zulqarnain in the Test squad. The teams are being updated, they'll be up in a bit.

9.25am: Pakistan will be led by Misbah-ul-Haq, who hasn't played a Test match since January this year and an in-form South Africa, undoubtedly, go into the rubber as favourites. The toss is just a few minutes away, but do check out the preview in the meantime.

9.20am local time Hello and welcome to our coverage of the first Test between Pakistan and South Africa being played in Dubai, the first in the city. It's a 'home' venue for Pakistan, who were recently beaten 3-2 in a closely-fought ODI series and, just when it seemed, they were recovering from an endless series of crises that had hogged their team over the last few months, they've landed in another one. Zulqarnain Haider went missing from the UAE and surfaced in London where he confirmed he had received death threats in yet another match-fixing related matter. It's not an issue that's going to die down soon and we are tracking it closely. Here's our coverage so far.

2.4

Umar Gul to Petersen, FOUR, a little more width this time, back of a length, and he cashes in, cutting it behind point for the game's first boundary

2.5

Umar Gul to Petersen, no run, appeal for caught-behind, there was certainly a deviation but did he nick it? Short of a good length outside off and moved away to kiss the outside edge as he got back to defend, straight to the keeper and that was out but Daryl Harper didn't think so. A poor decision in the end, that looked out, there was a sound and a clear deviation. The Pakistanis were convinced. Alviro gets a life

Gnasher has this to say about Harper: "Hmmm, not the first time Daryl Harper has had problems hearing an edge. Remember Graeme Smith against England, at Johannesburg, at the start of the year? He was in the third umpire's chair on that day." Yes, we remember that well. Led to a massive debate on UDRS

South Africa's session but not without luck. Unfriendly conditions for bowlers but Gul impressed early on with some testing bowling and should have had Alviro caught-behind. There were a couple of lbw calls against Smith, and then a missed run-out later in the session. Chances were created but South Africa have overcome the threats to emerge strongly at lunch, and have an excellent platform now to push on. Alviro was shaky at the start but then targeted the slow bowlers, often stepping out. Smith appeared more at ease against pace, but has now settled in well. Join us in about 35 minutes for the second session. Gnasher McGlashan has the updated bulletin here.

Alviro Petersen's edge against Umar Gul was the closest Pakistan got to a wicket in that first session. The UDRS would have upheld his appeal, if only it were in use. What's your take on the issue? Head across to our Facebook page and get heard.

Gul to Smith.

29.1

Umar Gul to Smith, FOUR, Smith begins the session in style, bringing up fifty No. 29 with a crisp off drive. Over-pitched and angling across, Smith leant out and drilled it to the left of mid-off who ran across and dived over the ball

29.2

Umar Gul to Smith, FOUR, slightly shorter in length, slightly airy from Smith who drives through the line and lofts it over mid-off and away for four more

29.3

Umar Gul to Smith, FOUR, Ominous for Pakistan. Smith begins the session with three fours and this was the best of the lot. Slower ball, over-pitched wide outside off and Smith leans out and creams it straight between the bowler and mid-off for another four

Smith moves past Border now as the batsman to score most runs as a captain.

29.4

Umar Gul to Smith, no run, good comeback from Gul, hits the uncertain length and gets it to shape away from Smith's slightly complacent push outside off

29.5

Umar Gul to Smith, no run, finally Smith goes back to one, landed behind a length outside off, and defended to the off side

29.6

30.4

Saeed Ajmal to Smith, no run, skips out of his crease but Ajmal holds it back and he defends after getting close to the pitch

31.2

Umar Gul to Petersen, 1 run, Gul angles this into Alviro's pads and he tucks it in front of square leg for one

31.3

Umar Gul to Smith, 1 run, over-pitched again to Smith, who is moving nicely into his drives. This time, however, he does not time it too well and it goes slowly enough to mid-off for them to pinch a single

31.4

Umar Gul to Petersen, 1 run, short and into the body, Alviro controls the pull shot well and sends it down towards fine leg for a single

31.5

32.4

Saeed Ajmal to Petersen, no run, lovely bowling and a huge appeal there for caught behind. It was quicker, fuller and spun more than he thought. Alviro played back to one he should have been forward to and prodding for the straighter one instead of the off spin and it spun past his inside edge. Adnan pouched and appealed in earnest, but Harper was unmoved.

33.2

Umar Gul to Smith, 1 run, perfect bouncer at 140 kph, he had Smith lulled into expecting full balls and the SA captain was aeons late on the pull. Ended up fending it with his eyes looking in the direction of Abu Dhabi, but somehow got itaway to deep square leg

Dave: "@Nick: I'm sure you will agree with me when I say that in the beginning of his career he did have an odd technique. I would find it strange that you were not one of the naysayers...Since he's got a more solid technique, obviously he's going to be successful! Anyway, I have always been fond of Amla and he will def be one of crickets greats."
