Pakistan v South Africa T20I Series - 1st T20I

Pakistan v South Africa

South Africa won by 6 wickets (with 10 balls remaining)

I am Nitin Sundar starting off commentary today, and Sid Ravindran will bring you the second half. Gopi Rangarajan is on scoring, and that wonderful gentleman Sriram Veera is on the bulletin. Albie Morkel has the new ball, AB de Villiers has the big gloves. Shahzaib Hasan and Imran Farhat will open.

A bit of a delay at the start. Meanwhile, Shehzad is not a fan of Mohammad Hafeez. "Who has selected hafeez again and strange thing is there is never an objection on his selection. Look at this averages, they are far below than any batsman in the world and he is not a great bowler either."

19.57 A few minutes to go to the start. Enough time to install the spiffing new Chrome extension. It is for free and it is quite magnificent. In fact it is just what the doctor ordered.

South Africa have been trying to resurrect their Twenty20 side following the forgettable World Twenty20 2010. They have since beaten West Indies and Zimbabwe in the shorter format, but these conditions and the Pakistan team offer a different challenge. Pakistan, meanwhile, have blown hot and cold as always - beating Australia 2-0 before losing to England by the same margin on the recent England tour. Will Pakistan's performance here be affected by the spot-fixing controversy? Graeme Smith says it is not a distraction for South Africa.

19.50 Another legendary fast bowler is on air. Waqar Younis, the Pakistan coach. "We need to try and generate revenues from this series and ensure they are delivered back in Pakistan (where floods have caused massive devastation). Younis Khan is back in the longer formats. Mohammad Yousuf will be back too. We all know what happened in England, but now we have our brain back in cricket," he says.

Steyn on air: "These things happen," he says philosophically about that horrendous fall on his head, which led to concussion, in the Champions League semi-final. "I have broken fingers while fielding, broken my back while taking a catch - a lot of freak injuries." In essence, he's seen it all. "Another opportunity for Rusty Theron, and the other youngsters coming in. I want to bowl consistently at 150 kph, and in the right areas." Batsmen the world over won't want him to recover in a hurry.

19.43 Younis Khan is not playing today. But the big news is Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn are not playing either. Steyn was warming up in the ground, but South Africa don't want to hurry him into action following that major injury in the Champions League.

19.38 It's that time of the year when there is cricket in every corner of the world. At times, even we struggle to keep track of it all.. just kidding! Download the ESPNcricinfo toolbar to ensure you don't miss anything.

We will bring you the teams once we have them. Meanwhile, time to log into Twitter and follow our new and improved avatar out there. Lots of news, rumination, interesting factoids, stats, the occasional quiz, and loads of fun to be had at @ESPNcricinfo - 140 characters of all the cricket you need.

Toss: Afridi wins the toss and elects to bat. "Reading the pitch is an art, there is something here for the fast bowlers, but it should favour batsmen. South Africa are a good opponent, lots of youngsters in both sides."

Johan Botha: "There will be dew later, I think it will work in our favour. Hope to form a good leadership partnership with Graeme Smith (captain of the other two formats). Great series against Zimbabwe and we look to continue that."

19.26 local time Hello and a warm welcome to the first Twenty20 between Pakistan and South Africa. Plenty of build-up to this series, it is an important one from Pakistan, from their home away from home in the Middle East. South Africa meanwhile return here after ten years. Firdose Moonda gives a ringside view of South Africa's lead-up to this tour here. The toss, from the resplendent Sheikh Zayed stadium in Abu Dhabi, is upon us in a couple of minutes.

0.1

JA Morkel to Shahzaib Hasan, 1 run, back of a length outside off and moving away, Shahzaib plays watchfully and picks a single behind square on the off side.

Two slips in place for Morkel. Reasonable and quite noisy crowd in.

0.2

JA Morkel to Imran Farhat, no run, slips down the leg to Farhat the left hander. A touch of the pad on the way denies the wide

0.3

JA Morkel to Imran Farhat, 1 wide, no such luck this time, Farhat made sure he let it go safely to the keeper. Morkel got this closer to the batsman, but not close enough.

0.3

JA Morkel to Imran Farhat, 1 wide, this time he's really sprayed it. A good foot and a half down the leg. Easy call for wide

0.3

JA Morkel to Imran Farhat, FOUR, crisply done. Albie finally lands one on the money, but it is invitingly over-pitched on middle stump and he flicks it elegantly over square leg

0.4

JA Morkel to Imran Farhat, FOUR, this is a poor start from Albie and Farhat is not letting him get away with it. Another gently half volley on the pads and Farhat gets inside the line and whips it in front of square leg

0.5

JA Morkel to Imran Farhat, no run, finally lands one on middle and leg, Farhat punches it nicely on the up but can't beat a sliding mid off

0.6

JA Morkel to Imran Farhat, 1 wide, Well well, Albie has left his radar device back in South Africa. Wide down the leg

0.6

JA Morkel to Imran Farhat, 1 wide, it does look like Albie believes Farhat is a right hander, despite all the evidence to the contrary. Another one goes down the leg.

0.6

JA Morkel to Imran Farhat, 1 run, over-pitched on middle and leg again, but this time there is protection at deep midwicket to prevent Farhat from flicking happily for four more. Just a single this time.

Horror start this for South Africa.

End of over 1 (14 runs) Pakistan 14/0 (RR: 14.00)
Imran Farhat    9* (5b 2x4)      JA Morkel    1-0-14-0
Shahzaib Hasan    1* (1b)

Two slips for Tsotsobe, left arm over.

1.1

Tsotsobe to Imran Farhat, no run, better start from this end, hits the deck back of a length and pushes Farhat into the backfoot defence

1.2

Tsotsobe to Imran Farhat, 1 run, a hint of room this time just outside off and enough for Farhat to steer to the right of point for a single

1.3

Tsotsobe to Shahzaib Hasan, no run, angles across the right hander at 133 kph, and Shahzaib reaches out to play it towards point. Tall batsman, is Shahzaib. A half stride helps him cover a couple of feet

1.4

Tsotsobe to Shahzaib Hasan, no run, that's it, Shahzaib has seen enough and looks to thump one into Dubai. Misses making contact though as it whistles past outside off stump

1.5

Tsotsobe to Shahzaib Hasan, 1 run, hmm, a hint of inward movement from Tsotsobe, Shahzaib presses forward and ends up looking quite prone in front of the stumps. Thankfully got some inside edge out to square leg for a single

1.6

Tsotsobe to Imran Farhat, OUT, and gone. Farhat did not have to do this, he walked down the track, looking to dominate Tsotsobe early. It was floated well outside off, beating Farhat's pre-meditated intention to go over the leg side. Ended up going through with the shot anyway. Mistake. It took the toe end of the bat and landed in first slip's lap.

Shahzaib Hasan    2* (4b)      JA Morkel    1-0-14-0

Morne Morkel comes on to correct the follies of his brother.

2.1

M Morkel to Shahzaib Hasan, no run, big appeal, rightly turned down. Shahzaib again pushes his front foot out, it seems like a trigger movement that will have him in trouble against inward movement. Morne got it to jag back in and it hit him on the pads. But it was too high

2.2

M Morkel to Shahzaib Hasan, 1 no ball, good ball, except for the over-stepping. Shahzai ended up poking uncertainly as it shaped away from a length

2.2

M Morkel to Shahzaib Hasan, (no ball) 1 run, another no-ball. Albie specialises in wides, while Morne takes care of no-balls. Hmm. Shahzaib looks to launch the free-hit over wide long on, but it comes on faster and he ends up playing the shot too early. Single taken as the catch balloons to the outfield inconsequentially

2.2

M Morkel to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, lovely shot from Hafeez, he makes room by backing away from the stumps as Morne over-pitched on and outside off stump. Hafeez went down on his knees and drilled it square. Smoothly played.

2.3

M Morkel to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, hits the deck back of a length and forces Hafeez on to the backfoot. Defended to the offside

2.4

M Morkel to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, a hint of room outside off and Hafeez looks to slam it on the up. Straight to cover though. This pitch looks good.

2.5

M Morkel to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, another top shot from Hafeez! This was quick from Morne, pushing Hafeez back, but there was around half a foot of room outside off. Enough for Hafeez to go back in the crease, ride the bounce and coax it through point.

2.6

M Morkel to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, ends up with a fish outside off as Morne gets it to move away from outside off stump.

End of over 3 (11 runs) Pakistan 27/1 (RR: 9.00)

3.1

Tsotsobe to Shahzaib Hasan, 1 run, Shahzaib does that again, looking to fetch a ball from middle and off without quite getting to the pitch as it deviates in from a length. Inside edge dribbles away square on the leg side for one

3.2

Tsotsobe to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, on the stumps from Tsotsobe, who has easily looked the best of the three bowlers so far. Hafeez spots the hint of inswing, covers the deviation and punches to mid on for a quick single

3.3

Tsotsobe to Shahzaib Hasan, 1 run, Shahzaib gets a short one, and early indications that this is what he likes facing. Pushes forward as is his wont, but rocks back in time to slam the pull shot to deep square leg for one. It went in a trice.

3.4

Tsotsobe to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, slow off cutter at 127 kph, Hafeez spotted the change in pace and ran it down square on the off side for one

3.5

Tsotsobe to Shahzaib Hasan, 1 run, another slower ball, 120 kph this time and Shahzaib picks a single behind square on the off side

3.6

Tsotsobe to Mohammad Hafeez, 2 runs, Hafeez drives on the up through the covers, literally, since the fielder there dives over the ball. Theron runs across from mid off to keep it down to two. Not very well timed this time.

Faisal: "Was I the only one impressed by Asad Shafiq in England? If Pakistan played Hafeez as an allrounder there are better spin all rounders in Pakistan, Mansoor Amjad and Yasim Murtaza as a start."

End of over 4 (7 runs) Pakistan 34/1 (RR: 8.50)
Mohammad Hafeez    12* (8b 2x4)      LL Tsotsobe    2-0-9-1
Shahzaib Hasan    6* (10b)      M Morkel    1-0-11-0

4.1

M Morkel to Shahzaib Hasan, no run, another almighty swing and a miss from Shahzaib. Planted the front foot forward a good second in advance and looked to detonate it over long off. Missed the line completely though.

4.2

M Morkel to Shahzaib Hasan, 1 no ball, slower ball, swing and a miss again. Guess what, Morne has over-stepped again as well.

4.2

M Morkel to Shahzaib Hasan, 3 runs, short ball, hurries Shahzaib into a rather ungainly pull. He was setting himself for the front foot hit, but the bounce forced him into a pull. Top edge goes straight over the keeper's head for three.

4.3

M Morkel to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, slow off cutter from Morne, cleverly done and completely befuddles Hafeez, who played an attempted flick without getting his feet into position, approximately one second before the ball came

4.4

M Morkel to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, normal pace this time, coming into Hafeez who punches crisply to mid on

4.5

M Morkel to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, a touch of room outside off and Hafeez tries to steer it through point, but can't get it past the fielder

4.6

M Morkel to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, driven in pleasing fashion out to mid off. Too well-timed to steal a single

The fielders and batsmen are sweating buckets. Oh, the hot and humid ways of the Middle East!

End of over 5 (4 runs) Pakistan 38/1 (RR: 7.60)

5.1

Tsotsobe to Shahzaib Hasan, OUT, Shahzaib is gone. It is the kind of dismissal you would expect from someone who plonks the front foot across without intent to reach the length, and drives almost always on the up. It was on a length from Tsotsobe again, angling across Shahzaib, who did that half-stride across and looked to go over the off side. He ended up scooping it straight over Duminy at point, who ran back around 20 yards and took a nice tumbling catch.

Shahzaib Hasan c Duminy b Tsotsobe 9 (28m 14b 0x4 0x6) SR: 64.28

Umar Akmal walks out.

5.2

Tsotsobe to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, fullish on the stumps and Hafeez drives it to mid on

5.3

Tsotsobe to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 leg bye, close call - direct hit might have got him. Hafeez got some pad on it as it came in from back of a length on the stumps. It dribbled out to the off side and Duminy swooped across quickly as the batsmen hesitated. He shied, but missed.

5.4

Tsotsobe to Umar Akmal, no run, full and well outside off, Akmal looks for an expensive off drive, but can't quite time it

5.5

Tsotsobe to Umar Akmal, no run, lets one go outside off as it angles across from well outside off

5.6

Tsotsobe to Umar Akmal, FOUR, Umar plays the shot of the evening. Marginally over-pitched by Tsotsobe outside the off stump, Akmal rises with the bounce and slams it with the full face through the covers

Tariq Engineer is excited by that shot. "sOOOOperb, he EASED into it," he says.

Rusty comes on with one slip.

6.1

Theron to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, slowish delivery, back of a length outside off and it is run off the face square on the off side for one

6.2

Theron to Umar Akmal, no run, Umar Akmal is jumping around in his crease, prances out to off stump and then looks to get well forward even before Theron is in delivery stride. Ends up playing and missing to a back of length ball outside off

6.3

Theron to Umar Akmal, no run, and again, Akmal jumps across and fishes without looking like making contact..

6.4

Theron to Umar Akmal, no run, back of a length outside off, Umar gets behind the line this time and defends down the track

6.5

Theron to Umar Akmal, 2 runs, well-fielded at the third man fence by Bosman. Akmal gets beside the line this time and steers it well, it looked like it may have run across, but Bosman ran across quickly and put in the dive to stop it

6.6

Botha brings himself on.

7.1

Botha to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, tossed up on off, Hafeez reaches out and plays it back to the bowler.

7.2

Botha to Mohammad Hafeez, OUT, Hafeez is gone, and very unfortunate too. He makes room on the off side by backing away before Botha delivered and made good contact, perhaps too good contact, as his carve over the off side ended in deep point's hands as he ran across to his right.

7.3

7.4

Botha to Umar Akmal, no run, gets well behind that one and defends to the off side

7.5

Botha to Umar Akmal, 1 run, Umar Akmal drives out to the covers and that brings Afridi on strike

7.6

Botha to Shahid Afridi, SIX, Strike Rate of 600. Thank you very much. Afridi trots out, gets to the pitch and launches Botha over the long-on boundary that is pulled well in. Would not have mattered anyway. Afridi means business. As usual.

8.1

Theron to Umar Akmal, 1 run, Akmal does the smart thing. Another single, this time runs it from outside off behind point, to give Afridi strike

8.2

Theron to Shahid Afridi, 2 runs, back of a length outside off, without much pace. Afridi waits for it and fiercely uncocks those wrists at the last moment to pick a couple to deep point

8.3

Theron to Shahid Afridi, FOUR, Bang. Short ball from Theron, may have been a slower ball, but Afridi picked it early and pulled it wide of mid on. A moment later the ball thudded into the wide long on boundary boards.

8.4

Theron to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, another slow off cutter, Afridi again spots it and works it off the back foot to midwicket for one

Akmal is standing outside his crease to counter the change of pace.

8.5

Theron to Umar Akmal, no run, back of a length outside off and coming in as Akmal reaches out and plays back to the bowler

8.6

Theron to Umar Akmal, 1 run, 111 kph outside off, and Akmal waits an eternity before managing to make contact with the glide and pick a single to deep third man

9.1

Botha to Umar Akmal, 1 run, Botha drops it short and Akmal cuts it into the covers for one

9.2

Botha to Shahid Afridi, SIX, that's big, that's huge, that's as high as the Burj Dubai! Afridi chips out again and gets to the pitch. Once that happens, the rest is of only academic interest. It booms off the middle off the bat, takes off into the Abu Dhabi night and lands well behind long on

9.3

Botha to Shahid Afridi, SIX, mid-hit, but that does not matter. Afridi looked to cross bat this without getting to the pitch, ended up getting a top edge but it still happily carried over Bosman at long on. Well.

9.4

Botha to Shahid Afridi, OUT, finally, Afridi mistimes one well enough for it to land inside the field of play. Another cross batted heave, this time it goes off the bottom half of the bat and comes down around 10 feet inside the ropes at long on. Bosman pouches it and Abu Dhabi goes slient.

12.4

JA Morkel to Umar Akmal, OUT, well, there are ways of getting out, and then there is this. Umar Akmal has gone here, spotting a slow bouncer from Albie early and swatting it ferociously. M Morkel to Umar Gul, no run, Clueless is Gul. Another short ball, whizzes a foot away from his body outside off as he makes up his mind on how to play it. By the time he had, the ball was in AB de Villiers' gloves

End of over 15 (wicket maiden) Pakistan 91/7 (RR: 6.06)
Umar Gul    0* (3b)      M Morkel    3-1-15-1
Misbah-ul-Haq    6* (14b)      J Botha    4-0-31-3

Tsotsobe comes on.

15.1

Tsotsobe to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, back of a length outside off and worked off the face of the bat through point for one

15.2

Tsotsobe to Umar Gul, no run, extra pace from Morne, lack of pace from Tsotsobe - both are tormenting Gul equally. Pushes out uncertainly and gets as inside edge as it comes on slowly. Dribbles out to mid on

15.3

Tsotsobe to Umar Gul, OUT, well, that was an agonising stay for Gul and the good part for him is that it has come to an end. Back of a length and angling across him, he chose the pull - can't blame him, he had tried several other shots without success in that short stay - but sadly, he was very late on it. Top edge balloons up and lands in Smith's bucket hands on the square leg boundary

Umar Gul c Smith b Tsotsobe 0 (4m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

15.4

Tsotsobe to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, textbook punch from Misbah into the covers, all for a single

15.5

Tsotsobe to Saeed Ajmal, no run, fuller outside off and Ajmal can't quite time the drive into the off side

15.6

Tsotsobe to Saeed Ajmal, 1 run, back of a length outside off and Ajmal manages to late cut it to deep third man for one

Great spell from Tsotsobe comes to an end.

End of over 16 (3 runs) Pakistan 94/8 (RR: 5.87)
Saeed Ajmal    1* (2b)      LL Tsotsobe    4-0-16-3
Misbah-ul-Haq    8* (16b)      M Morkel    3-1-15-1

16.1

M Morkel to Saeed Ajmal, 1 run, Morne hits the deck again and pushes Ajmal back. But he does well to dab it into the off side for a single

16.2

M Morkel to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, angles into Misbah from outside off, and back of a length. It is the kind of approach that ensures the batsman cannot get a boundary without taking a risk. Misbah takes none.

16.3

M Morkel to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, short ball, gets really big on Misbah who gets into all kinds of problems as he looks to swat-pull and keep it down. It does not go anywhere.

16.4

M Morkel to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, another short ball, another unconvincing swat pull to mid on. Single taken this time

16.5

M Morkel to Saeed Ajmal, no run, slower ball at 122 kph, so slow that Ajmal had played his pull shot and was looking at fine leg when the ball came and hit his shoulder

16.6

M Morkel to Saeed Ajmal, 1 run, makes reasonable contact this time with the pull and gets it over the infield for a single to the leg side

End of over 17 (3 runs) Pakistan 97/8 (RR: 5.70)
Saeed Ajmal    3* (5b)      M Morkel    4-1-18-1
Misbah-ul-Haq    9* (19b)      LL Tsotsobe    4-0-16-3

Theron, the death over specialist come on. These are the death overs really, since Pakistan's innings seems to have died.

17.1

Theron to Saeed Ajmal, 1 run, length ball outside off and Ajmal punches uppishly almost back into the bowler's hands. Theron doesn't reach soon enough and it is a single to long off

17.2

Theron to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, Misbah is still not looking for boundaries. Gets a single with a non-violent flick to midwicket

17.3

Theron to Saeed Ajmal, OUT, Ajmal is run out. It is one of those days when NOTHING is going Pakistan's way. Length ball on off stump. Ajmal times the off drive rather well, but Theron on his follow through gets his hand on it and parries it into the covers. Ajmal is well out of the crease looking for a single when the throw from Miller in the covers comes in and breaks the stumps at the striker's end. Ajmal is around a foot short.

Saeed Ajmal run out 4 (8m 7b 0x4 0x6) SR: 57.14

17.4

Theron to Shoaib Akhtar, 3 runs, and finallt some respite. Tsotsobe misfields at cover as Shoaib drives the full toss, and ends up conceding three

17.5

Theron to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, Pakistan have raised their slowest 100 in T20s, despite Afridi's 7-ball blitz for 25. Misbah takes another single into the leg side.

17.6

Theron to Shoaib Akhtar, no run, full toss on the pads and Shoaib defends. It was imperative that he survived that ball to give Misbah a shot at some late fireworks

End of over 18 (6 runs) Pakistan 103/9 (RR: 5.72)
Shoaib Akhtar    3* (2b)      J Theron    3-0-18-0
Misbah-ul-Haq    11* (21b)      M Morkel    4-1-18-1

18.1

JA Morkel to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, over-pitched outside off, Misbah looks to go down on a knee and cart it over the leg side, but he can't time it at all. He refuses the single to long on

18.2

JA Morkel to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, goes for the pull this time, but can't place it past midwicket. Another possible single denied.

18.3

JA Morkel to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, Well, Albie has completely decieved Misbah with his lines there. Misbah was prancing inside the crease, jumping across to off stump but Albit kept it even wider outside off and Misbah had to let it go

18.4

JA Morkel to Misbah-ul-Haq, FOUR, full-toss on off stump and finally some respite. Misbah dumps it over Morkel's head for a straight four. First bounday since the 10th over.

18.5

JA Morkel to Misbah-ul-Haq, FOUR, and again, this is poor from Albie, who delivers another full toss. Misbah does well to go down on a knee and get under it. Another loft over Morkel's head and four more.

18.6

JA Morkel to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, well done by Misbah, who calmly nurdles a ball on the pads for a single to square leg. He retains strike for the final over

End of over 19 (9 runs) Pakistan 112/9 (RR: 5.89)
Misbah-ul-Haq    20* (27b 2x4)      JA Morkel    4-0-28-1
Shoaib Akhtar    3* (2b)      J Theron    3-0-18-0

19.1

Theron to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, attempted yorker, ends up as a half volley but the angle is perfect as it comes into Misbah and denies him a chance to drill off the back foot through the covers. He refuses the single

19.2

Theron to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, short ball, another mis-timed pull from Misbah and another single refused.

19.3

Theron to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, 125 kph and Misbah is still so late on the pull that Sriram Veera likens it to Alberto Berasategui's forehand. Straight to midwicket. No run.

19.4

Theron to Misbah-ul-Haq, SIX, Moral of the story - don't give Misbah full tosses. Theron delivers this knee high on leg stump and Misbah gets everything behind it as he blasts it over deep square leg for six.

19.5

Theron to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, OUT, Akhtar is run out and Pakistan are all out. Misbah can't get much power on the off drive as he looks to play off the back foot. He tried to take two to retain strike. Miller, running in from long off, collected from inside the circle and threw down the stumps for the second time in the day. Shoaib was never going to make it at the bowler's end.

Shoaib Akhtar run out 3 (9m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 150.00

Tsotsobe: "Very happy with the return, I think I deserved this today. People say I swing the ball in, but I don't look to swing it in really. I rely on the cutters. Bowl them in the same are and look for cutters, that is it," says Tsotsobe who has mastered the art of deception - he brings balls into the right-hander without looking to do it. Well bowled today!

120 to win for South Africa. One would expect this to be an easy chase, but never discount Gul, Shoaib and co. Sriram Veera's updated bulletin is here.
