Umar and Tanvir make it 4-1 for Pakistan

  shares 97

Pakistan 219 for 7 (Misbah 66, Umar 61*, J Mendis 3-36) beat Sri Lanka 218 for 9 (Sangakkara 78, Mathews 61, Tanvir 4-34) by three wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

A four-wicket haul from Sohail Tanvir and a fluent stand between captain Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Akmal were the stand-out features of Pakistan's convincing win - they took the series 4-1 - in the dead rubber played on a slow pitch. The pair didn't get bogged down at the fall of two wickets off successive deliveries and their positive approach kept their team on track, but the platform for a win was set up by a superior bowling attack that restricted Sri Lanka, whose batting let them down again, to a gettable total.

Plenty of talent and depth in their bowling reserves served Pakistan well again. In conditions that were aiding swing and movement initially, and not discounting the advantage of using new balls at each end, Pakistan's seamers stepped up, and were supported by their spinners later on. Tanvir didn't have the pace of the man he replaced, Aizaz Cheema, but made up with his prodigious swing - by Middle East standards - and wily, selective variations. He fooled opener Upul Tharanga with an away swinger after feeding him three deliveries on the trot that moved in through the air. He was more threatening when he pitched the ball short of a driving length, something he realised quickly after being driven down the ground by Dinesh Chandimal. He worked at him with a spate of away-going deliveries and held one back a little more, prompting an attempt at a steer from Chandimal that was snapped up by slip.

In the interim, Umar Gul forced a loose shot from Tillakaratne Dilshan, who was caught behind. Thirty two for 3 soon became 46 for 4 when Chamara Silva, replacing an injured Mahela Jayawardene, was sucked in by a length ball that he nicked straight to slip, giving Junaid Khan a wicket in his first over.

The only batsman unflustered by the travails around him was Kumar Sangakkara, once again charged with the responsibility of rebuilding his team's innings. Despite the early assistance for the seamers, he didn't hesitate lurching forward to execute his favourite drives past extra cover on one knee, and took Tanvir for three fours in an over. The spinners, Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal, erred on occasion, and Sangakkara was quick to latch on. He found an able partner at No.6 in Angelo Mathews, who counterattacked by launching Gul for two straight sixes when that early support from the conditions had withered away, and ran superbly between wickets.

Sangakkara and Mathews did an admirable job, rotating the strike and not getting bogged down in a stand of 118. The field was spread out but a significant proportion of their runs were singles earned by just tapping the ball around the in-field, often in front of cover and point, and sprinting across. The boundaries, however, had dried up and when Sangakkara tried to break the 14-over drought with a drive over extra cover against Mohammad Hafeez, he was caught. Not long after, Jeevan Mendis was stumped off Afridi and Mathews, who'd survived a couple of close shaves while walking across to Ajmal, was eventually bowled round his legs. Sri Lanka only managed two fours and a six in the second half of their innings, struggling to push on as the track got increasingly slow and Tanvir returned to nip out a couple more.

Pakistan began their pursuit cautiously, going through a 24-ball runless phase at one stage, but Mohammad Hafeez and Asad Shafiq, in particular, were beginning to get set before losing their wickets. The experienced hands of Younis Khan and Misbah, however, guided them in typical, workmanlike fashion. Misbah was given a life at backward point by Jeevan Mendis, but consolidated well amid periodic bursts of aggression. Younis pulled Fernando past square leg and drove Prasanna inside-out over extra cover. Misbah warmed up by launching a length ball over Mathews' head, blazed Perera through the covers and reverse-swept a couple of boundaries past short third man.

In a little over ten overs together, the pair added a half-century stand and strengthened Pakistan's position. That was undermined when Younis and Shoaib Malik were trapped in front by Mendis off consecutive deliveries in the 26th over. The hat-trick ball was an early indication of the Pakistani response - Umar stepped out to a flighted delivery and drove it confidently to mid-off, seemingly unaffected by the pressure created by those two wickets. The final ball of the over was a long hop that was promptly dispatched, and the tone of his innings changed little after that.

Umar often left his crease to get to the pitch of the ball and comfortably kept the runs flowing. Misbah, on the other hand, opted to play from the crease, sweeping, reverse-sweeping, shuffling from one side to the other restlessly but effectively and keeping the required-rate under control throughout. The boundaries came from the other end: Umar muscled Thisara Perera through the covers, guided Malinga past third man, swatted Dilhara Fernando through midwicket and creamed Seekkuge Prasanna past mid-off. There was a slight hiccup when Misbah and Afridi fell in quick succession, but Pakistan were secure with Umar at the other end; the pressure was off with a couple of crunched boundaries off Malinga and Fernando, and the win followed shortly after.

It was very close to 5/0 for Pakistan Mr. Talya! Brilliant Pakistan you are back on the world's top again!. SL? Those who have bothered to read my earlier comments on the SL team and their chief selector Mendis know what Moi feels about it all. I will just add that Chandimal has become a new Kapugedera and Chamara Silva must be having magical powers like Merlin to be constantly in the side being such a very bad, mediocre player. I really don't know how he can bear with his own failures. Bowling? South Africa will absolutely pulverize SL's feeble attack and in the process I hope end Duleep Mendis's horrific run as selector. Dilshan, needs a long session with Dr. Phil to regain his former hauteur...

Pakistan is on the roll & its good for cricket on the whole so every one needs to welcome it & praise the team which has gone through the darkest of periods and constantly playing its home matches on foreign soils. I can bet no team in the world (cricket or football) is as tougher as Team Pakistan to come back this hard. Credit must be given to Pakistan and wishing them all the best to win next three series to climb up the ranking & slap all the critics along with ICC

I think I speak for all of us, that we have seen quite enough of Misbah's forward defensive stroke, over and over again. Besides, how can we trust a man who has lost matches because of his reverse sweep at the most inopportune moments. His capataincy is lack lustre and devoid of drive. He needs to be retired.

Hellooo Dear Dicky. Just to remind you the fact that Pakistan has always played far better than India outside the home ground. While India has always proved to be the LIONS (at Home). Its example is the series lost in England and won in India. So it is better to train the LION outside the cage.

@orangtan. The history of Pak cricket against England is not that good. Yes, Pakistan has a very good bowling line up. But there are not even 3 batsmen in the team on whom you can rely against a good fast bowling attack. Fielding is not good at all. Many drop catches by Pak team caused them so many defeat from wining positions. There will be good contest against England, but I am not sure about the series win. England has an edge for sure as a balanced team . A dead pitch will give a drawn series.

  • POSTED BY on | November 24, 2011, 5:01 GMT

SL has just gone from bad to worse since the WC, what has changed since then,

Lost TB as Coach Murali Retired Sanga is no longer the captain. Most importantly none of the new recruits have realy performed. Ajantha Mendis not in team The team has potential and this is not the time for chopping and changing, batting has really been below par, not sure if Marvan is the right person for the batting coach role, with the captaincy may be we should try Angelo M in the T20 and 50 over formats. It's not a bad time to lose a few matches as long as we learn from our mistakes and bounce back. Losing a meaningless series like this shouldn't worry us too much as long as we learn and move on.

  • POSTED BY on | November 24, 2011, 4:39 GMT

I wonder, if SL had lost everything. Their Captain and even commentators seem to have lost sportsmanship, as well. Not a single word for Pak series-win broke from their lips.

  • POSTED BY anver777 on | November 24, 2011, 4:35 GMT

After the WC, SL has slipped badly & become an average looking team barring Sanga & Mahela who are world class players, but if they fails then what?? Dilshan captaincy is also not up to the mark.........SLCB officials must sit & find out the causes for this down fall & sort out the few selection issues, otherwise sorry to say SL may even lose to BD & Zim in future!!!!!! i think currently SL cricket is going backwards in all levels, therefore SLCB has to put extra effort to improve the standards before its too late...

  • POSTED BY sundoo on | November 24, 2011, 4:10 GMT

@IronCobra hammered in the WC Finals? I hardly think a win with 10 balls to spare chasing 275 is a "hammering". Would have been different had Kula held on to Gambhir's catch and Sanga to Dhoni's stumping, so lets not talk about "hammerings"

Don't want to exaggerate, but Pakistan is doing excellently in all 3 forms of the game. Guys like Hafeez ( must be the best all-rounder in the world now), Ajmal ,Misbah and Younis are able to adapt seamlessly between Tests and the shorter versions. Look at the depth of bowling talent, Umar Gul, Junaid, Cheema,Sohail Tanvir,Mhd. Talha and top-class spin from Ajmal,Afridi, Hafeez and Rehman. Batting is also coming together with the likes of Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq supplementing the experienced Younis and Misbah. Only the fielding could do with improvement. I am sure the # 1 Test team, England, will be beaten by Pakistan in the upcoming Tests, ODIs and T-20s

This success is great but Pakistan team should not be complacent. There are still many flaws in their batting line up, when we compare our team with other big teams like Australia, South Africa, England, and India, Pakistan has to work harder to raise their batting to confront those teams. Shahid Afridi has yet proved that he is master player, and those who were behind his ouster should be panelized. Many officials of PCB will be off board. I request all the high ups of Pakistan cricket to bring new players according to merit, Imran Nazeer and Faisal Iqbal should be prepared in place of Younus Khan.

Well Played Lanka Lions, you have made all Sri Lankans proud. You have handed our fine friends, the Pakistanis, a 4-1 victory on top of the Test series handout. This is the least we could do for their generous hosting. The Lions felt very safe. We now go to the African jungle where we will slay the Saffers - just like we did last time - we will roast them in their own den with our brilliant batting and penetrating bowling. The world fears us but cannot find the courage to admit it but I see the fire in your eyes.

PAK performed exceptionally well, and this kind of performance could have won them games against any opposition. I am hoping that SL will perform to the expectations and win the matches in SA. They have lot of talents in their team. TM Dilshan is a very able captain, just little bit unlucky. Good Luck to SL for their forthcoming tour to SA.

These are tough times and we fans must look at the positive take homes, as most of the players did showed some glims of shine, which need to give some time, and exposure and time will be the desider on this.. Can you imagine how much of pressure these sri lankan senior players are carrying with th em ( ref: Sangas speach) The guys who are staying at sri lanka is waiting for them to fail and fail badly.. I hope they do not sucessed, and hope the team may perform in SA. which will be tougher than in UAE. good luck guys ;-)

think there are lots of things going wrong in Sri Lankan cricket. First of all the players hasnt been paid since the WC! can u imagine giving 100% if you are not getting paid for your efforts? plus Dilshan seems to have a personal grudge against some players. Why Suraj Randiv who was are best spinner (even better than Murali) before the WC , has been sidelined and not even getting a single game , is a big big mystery.. same thing goes to the non selection of Samaraweera for the test side..Dilshan has to go.. no point having a captain who is so selffish! in the earlier ODI, he wasted our only review to a ball he edged to the keeper! that sums its up

The SSC seems so far away now,how the Sri Lankans must miss home.Unfortunately, its time to prove their high rankings and big averages, against S.A.The good thing for Sri Lanka's great batsmen is that the rainy season has begun and the pitches will get slightly greener and quite a bit bouncier,a lot like what India had to deal with last year.

  • POSTED BY DwightR on | November 23, 2011, 23:25 GMT

what a shameful display from the Lankans..and not taking anything away from the Paks whose bowling should challenge any side in the world right now but since SL threw away the World Cup final nothing has clicked with them. Sanga stepping down as captain has caused the team to lose direction and the responsibilty has caused Dilshan to lose focus on his batting. and the selectors need to stop the rotating door of players! stop pushing out the veterans..samareweera & herath are in their prime and could have made a big difference in this series on this surface. Y use sekkuge as a spinner when Randiv is proven. Y bring in Kashual to keep in the tests when prassana went down instead of using Chandimal. lets save face and at least win the T20 portion of this tour and then really re-fouces and come back strong for the tour of SA.

I think it was a ggod move trying asad shafique as an opener. Humayun Farhat should be restricted to test matches. Owais in one dayers and Sharjeel in t20 deserve a chance. Owais should also be given a chance to play English league to make him comfortable against seam and swing; he plays the short pitch really well. I cant forget the contemptuous hook shot for six to sohail khan in t20 final.

Mr IronCobra , Do not forget Srilanka and Pakistan started winning tests abroad from the first series as soon as they got test status.. It took decades for some teams.

Sri Lankan team is a very well respected team all over the world, You should read the story from Anjana in today's Commentary . It is Heart touching.

A good win and lets hope it stays the same against Bangladesh and England. as we have seen Afredi was a clear difference in motivating the team and getting a positive result.

Fingers Crossed and lets hope for the best.

It is downhill all the way since the world cup final for Sri Lanka. Lost the series against England, lost the series against Australia and now lost the series against Pakistan. you dont have to be a rocket scientist to predict the results against South Africa. They dont seem to be able to change the losing trend whether they bat fist or second, whether they play at home or away,or whether they change the team make up or fiddle with the batting order which is a very disturbing trend. The dependency upon a couple of players in the team seems to be endemic from time immemorial. The most appropriate course of action seems to be to demote them to play with the minnows until they are able to come up to scratch again. R.I.P Sri Lanka Cricket.

I am happy for Pakistan and want to congratulate on getting 5th position in ICC ranking table, hope they climb up and get more success. But at the same time I feel sorry for Sri Lanka, as they are our favourest team after Pakistan and our close friend in cricketing nation. They lose their two positions in ICC ranking table after this series, I hope they stand up with new ambition and do well in upcoming series. I want Sanga back as captain.

seriously tired of sri lanka. hope india plays pakistan more. they r an exciting team. Sri lanka is rank boring!!!! and we hammered them in WC2011 finals. lets not play 'em no more .

Great performance Sri Lanka..4-1 is what we said from start. You made every Sri Lankan proud and taught a nice lesson to our friendly nation Pakistan on how to play fearless and intelligent cricket....Wait a moment..,Am I dreaming here? Could somebody wake me up and set me on fire before Sri Lanka head to South Africa? I certainly do not want to see Australia's 47 being challenged..

Dilshan captained impressively, he made Pak fight till the end. Pity he didn't have Randiv to bowl a no-ball with 1 needed. Still, Dishan has shown he is the RIGHT man to lead the Lanka *LIONS* in South Africa. It should be a slightly easier campaign given how well the Lions play on fast, bouncy tracks. Time to show the world what we're made of.

  • POSTED BY merandy on | November 23, 2011, 20:01 GMT

Dilshan was asking youngsters to perform while he is failing miserably. What happened to the side? Looks to me they lack motivation. May be due to Dlishan's attitude and the captaincy, OR may be team is disappointed with the board and the sports minister, OR may be internal politics among players OR may be all of these reasons. Also I can not understand why SL brings Chamara Silva repeatedly to the side when he has not performed in a single match. Looks like Duleep has lost his vision that he had during 95-96.

for me umar akmal and virat kohli are two best young batsmen in world at this team..and ones for the future..aggressive,enthusiastic,fearless and love to smack sixes and both love to hammer australia and srilanka..

  • POSTED BY AnotherCricketer on | November 23, 2011, 19:53 GMT

Feel bad for Dilshan for back to back matches with world's best bowling lineups: Australia and Pakistan. And he is about to run into yet another good bowling lineups in South Africa. Thanks to Sangakara for his brilliant show of bat. I think he hurt the Pathan-pride of Junaid Khan by whacking him at will in the first over that lead Junaid to bowl harder and gain an unfortunate partial abdominal-muscle tear. Both Sangakara and Mathew humbled the Pak fast bowling attack and a reminder that they are far .. far away from the peak performing days of Imran/Waqar/Wasim. I hope PCB is taking notice and will continue their quest for fast bowlers in what appears to be the infinite pool of domestic talent pool.

    -Pak fan.

This arrogant Dilshan had to be taught a lesson on whos your friend and whos your foe. This thrashing should wake him up and show him his rightful place and hopefully he will talk sense the next time he opens his mouth. Well played pakistan give em hell in the final one.

He got 4 wickts but truly his action is dangerous only for tailenders.

  • POSTED BY on | November 23, 2011, 19:33 GMT

I am a big fan of Sangakarra, Murali, Malinga and Jayasuriya, but can't fathom why SL fans would gloat so much when the Indian team loses and they are all over on our forums deriding SRT, BCCI, IPL and everything related. So, it actually gives me great pleasure to see SL being thrashed by an underrated and superb Pak outfit both in tests and one dayers! I wish there could be more India v Pak tests and one dayers.

Proud of you Pakistan........Proud to see that fighting spirit back in Pakistan Cricket Team........SriLanka has always been my second favourity and i pray and seriously wish to see there fighting spirit back under captaincy back to Kumara Sangakara till coming World Cup as he is a gem of a leader who really leads from front. I wish Sri Lankan selectors are reading this comment and feeling that there is need to free Dilshan from extra burden of captaincy now.

Wonderful performance by Pakistan throughout this tour. Srilanka performance was very poor but Sangakara under pressure played at his best in this tournament. He is really great player need some support especialy from lower order.

    Misbah iz a torture.................

  • POSTED BY lankavigi on | November 23, 2011, 19:22 GMT

It has been a long tour and a one-sided one. Pakistan were simply superb in everything. We've seen the differences between the two side. Pakistan's batting line up was very good and rarely did collapse. Their captain, Misbah was really good. He made the right descisions at the right times. He attacked and constricted SL at crucial periods in this tour. Their bowling attack was really convincing, with the likes of Gul, Afridi, Junaid, Cheema, Ajmal, Abdur and many more. Even the back-up bowlers were awsome. The bowling attack always chipped away with the wickets and they had fantastic allrounders like Afridi and Hafeez. Pakistan were good in everything and that helped in trashing their weak oppenents. I don't need to say much about SL and would simply say, that they were the complete opposite in everything to Pakistan. The only man who was convincing was Sanga. He was in a different planet to his team mates. Pak is now 5th with touching distance of SL. CONGRATS TO PAK. SL STOP PLAYING!

I hope the useless Sri Lankan selectors are egg faced now. Bringing in Chamara Silva for 6 balls and one run. What a bunch of useless selectors.

  • POSTED BY wnwn on | November 23, 2011, 18:55 GMT

Good win for Pakistan but i'm really worried about the future of Sri Lankan cricket. Something isn't right with the team because they haven't been performing for quite some time now. Maybe it is tiredness because they've been playing non stop since the world cup or it could be the fact that they haven't been paid for a while. They need to sort it out fast because the South Africa series could be a humiliation

With spinners like Hafeez,Ajmal and Afridi and fair bowling duo Pakistan can be team to beat if there batting line up is sorted and with likes returning of Mohd Aamir and Salman Butt the team will be more stronger

  • POSTED BY on | November 23, 2011, 15:21 GMT

Its very impressive to see Pakistan thriving and focused strong even though past few years have been full of controversies and disastrous scandals. I can tell this performance is shocking for lot of well wishers but its nice to see things not going as "THEY" have planned. GO GREEN CAPS...Its the performance that's going to navigate you where you belong.....ON THE TOP. Go get it Tigers...Let no conspiracy distract you...Stay strong and come strong...

The Finallb.2 Overs Give SL an edge in the game which probably they would be exploring to their advantage. ANd if MALINGA strikes the way he did in the Indian IPL,perhaps, ABUDHABI will witness some shocking scenes for Pakistan, though they have comfortably won the series.SANGAKKKARA& PErERA along with MATHEWS took the score from nowhere to a Position of some comfort to try their expert Bowling. Good LuckTotheSRILANKANS!

How is Rehman ignored for Tanvir is beyond my comprehension...why didn't you guys give Abdur Rehman a game!? Atleast he won't leak runs like Tanvir and BOTH of them can bat well. In a dead rubber, give your reserves a chance!
