Pakistan v Sri Lanka, 1st ODI, Sharjah December 18, 2013

Pakistan hang on to clinch 11-run win

276

Pakistan 322 for 5 (Hafeez 122, Maqsood 73, Sharjeel 61) beat Sri Lanka 311 (Kusal 64, Junaid 3-44) by 11 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Misbah-ul-Haq had implored his top order to produce an innings of substance in the approach to the series but even he may not have expected his top four to respond as emphatically as they did. Two young batsmen stroked alluring half-centuries, while Mohammad Hafeez ended his poor form with a canny 122, to set up Pakistan's third-highest total in 115 matches at Sharjah. Misbah had also warned his side that Sri Lanka don't stop fighting, and he perhaps hadn't expected his side to ignore that advice so flatly either.

When they had Sri Lanka at 221 for 7 in the 42th over, Pakistan allowed feeble bowling and inept fielding to creep in, and Seekkuge Prasanna and Sachithra Senanayake produced a courageous 87-run stand that drew Sri Lanka to within 15 runs of the target with eight balls remaining. In the end, the Sri Lankan tailenders could not sustain their fire. Senanayake toe-ended one to deep cover and the chase unraveled quickly after that, handing Pakistan an 11-run victory.

Hafeez had been relatively quiet in the early overs, perhaps aware that he had not passed 35 in his last eight ODI knocks. Despite his caution, his innings did not suffer from lack of intent. Sharjeel's fluent hand at the other end had prised open spaces in the outfield after the mandatory Powerplay and Hafeez mined the gaps conscientiously, even if he had begun scoring with two sleek fours off genuinely poor balls.

Finding singles and twos was to become the hallmark of Hafeez's entire knock. Occasionally he took on the more benign elements of Sri Lanka's attack, like when he blasted a six and a four of Tillakaratne Dilshan in the 20th over, but although he scored at a strike rate comfortably over 90 he had hit only four fours and two sixes in his first 75 runs. The death overs drew a crescendo from him as well but even late in the innings the heavier hits often came when he turned the strike over to the man at the other end. He made an exception when he launched one into the stands behind long-on to reach triple figures for the seventh time in ODIs, and he fell attempting a big shot as well, with only two balls to go in the innings.

Sharjeel Khan's bright half-century had set Pakistan off apace when he posted a bold riposte to Lasith Malinga, who had struck him on the shoulder with the first ball of the fourth over. Sharjeel hooked the next ball into the square-leg stand and then whipped two more leg-side fours in the over, embellishing the promise he had shown in the Twenty20s by making an unruffled run-a-ball 61. The ease with which he struck through the line, though, made the friendliness of the surface plain - and perhaps of the fast bowling as well.

Sohaib Maqsood was just as free-flowing through the middle overs in his sixth ODI, and he set about manipulating the field in step with Hafeez. He hit four sixes - all over wide long-on - but there were only two fours in his 73, which came from 68 balls. His 140-run stand with Hafeez was the biggest in the match, yet it was achieved with such laidback finesse they almost snuck by Sri Lanka, who allowed the game to meander through lack of imagination.

At times, only a perfect yorker seemed immune to being worked away, so Sri Lanka's quicker men attempted plenty of those. They had success with it in the middle overs and Malinga was instrumental in conceding only 25 in the batting Powerplay, but later in the innings they began to miss their length, and Pakistan were unforgiving.

Shahid Afridi walloped two sixes in three balls to help plunder 18 from Suranga Lakmal in the 46th over, on his way to a 12-ball 34. Lakmal had only played because Sri Lanka had bafflingly omitted Nuwan Kulasekara, whose early-overs penetration and experience at the death could not have been missed more sorely.

Senanayake and Prasanna had been Sri Lanka's most economical bowlers, and both men showed why they had been earmarked for long service in the limited-overs teams when they came together with the bat. Pakistan's bowling flagged for sure but the pair made apt use of what remained a good batting pitch and drilled the dross to the fence, relying heavily on their leg-side scoring zones. They benefited from some appalling fielding but as victory became a real prospect towards the end of the innings, Senanayake went for a boundary that he perhaps did not need to attempt at that stage.

Tillakaratne Dilshan was Sri Lanka's key man in Mahela Jayawardene's absence, and it did not bode well for the visitors that he was far from fluent in the early overs. Flat-footed against the fast men and uncertain against spin, Dilshan timed the ball poorly and placed it even worse. He contributed 30 from 43 to a 66-run stand that placed Sri Lanka in a moderate position, but given the firepower in that opening partnership, it was a crucial one to break.

Kusal Perera had less strike early on and was also short on boundaries, but he found the gaps that eluded Dilshan and eventually started to put the balls that fell in his strike zone to the fence. He was especially severe on short deliveries, using his short-arm pull to good effect most notably against Junaid Khan. The singles continued to flow freely and he reached his half-century off 43 balls, but slowed up a touch after that and was lbw for 64 off 68.

Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews combined for 73 for the fifth wicket to inspire hope, but the top order had not made enough in the opening overs and the quest for quick runs eventually accounted for them both. Chandimal will at least be comforted that 46 is a better score than he had managed in the 14 previous ODI innings, and that during his stay he seemed to reclaim some of the chutzpah that ruled his cricket when he first played for Sri Lanka.

Even though we lost this game. I am quite happy with our performance today. We had a lot of positive to take. Even though our seniors Sanga and Dili failed, our young players Chandimal, Kusal, Senanayake, Prasanna got the game going. Nice to see Chandimal getting his form back. That 6 from him over extra cover was probably the shot of the day. Senanayake looked good with the bat. I would say he should come to bat at No.7. His technique is not bad either. His technique looks much better than Thissara. Hope we can Replace Lakmal with Kulasekera in the next game. Our batting will be even more stronger.

Great game. Well batted Pak. Extremely well fought SL, like lions. We (pak) should have shut the game out sooner or by much larger margin. Waqar said it.. Pak, like rest of subcontinent, is lacking one true fast 150kph+ bowler. That would account for early top order wkts, breaking the back of the chase. Agree with some others to drop Amin now, and get some top batting coach in.

What a match today b/w SL and Pak. Pakistan batting is gelling well. A whirlwind innings by Sharjeel , Sohaib Maqsood, you beauty . A fantastic performance by Hafeez. A great cameo by Afridi. All in all a great team effort in batting. SL are lions of cricket. Great innings by Kaushal. And the innings by Senanayake and Parsanna almost took the match away from Pakistan. However a question why did Shahid Afridi did not complete his 10 overs. This same mistake cost Pakistan the 2nd T20 and almost todays match also . The catch by Sohaib Maqsood was catch of the match. SL did not field well today. As i had mentioned earlier this series is going to be a cracker and the fans will witness exceptional quality of cricket from both teams. Congratulations to Pakistan and well played Sri Lanka. Good luck to both the teams for the next ODI.

good team effort by Paksitan. Sharjeel was good at the top. Played well for his 1st ODi. A tiny bit disappointment on his dismissal as there was no such need for that. But good batting.

Hafeez played well. Scored a good 100 and paced it well. and needed it badly. very well played. Maqsood was good as well. and hitting good. Unfortunate run out but did played his part.

Superb by Afridi. its not this innings. Its the 3rd time in row that he has looked good and connecting well. Its been ages since we have seen consistency from afridi.

Good score and paksitan have bowling to defend it. They have surely made up for dew factor. over to bowlers now.

Sri lanka should consider replacing thirimanne with Kithruwan vithanage. Thirimanne is more suitable for test matches. It is apparent that his batting style dosen't suit his batting position. Thirimanne has very limited options to score runs. Thisara can't be considered as a batsman. Especially against an attack like pakistan thisara will be exposed very badly. Since we have seekkuge and senanayaka in the lower order I think we can play ashan priyanjana in place of thisara, adding more strength to our batting. And missing 10 overs can be completed by dilshan and mathews.

I wonder why does the player on the other end of Hafeez suddenly gets himself run out.... I mean the manner how Ahmed Shahzad (in SA T20s Feb/Mar 2013) and Sohaib Maqsood in yesterday's match, could literally just threw away wickets by standing in the middle of the wicket like stupid.... Is it just the coincidence that both could not handle the euphoria of reaching fifty/hundred respectively??

I certainly am not pointing to Hafeez's dubious calls for runs and then standing in the crease watching others run out have anything to do with this.. Neither am I saying Hafeez doesn't let anyone score if he, by stroke of luck, makes a few runs.

How can I commit these sins.. He's the man of the match of both matches.. Long Live Hafeez :-s

Well, I talked about Umar Amin in my last post and thankfully, he is omitted by PCB selection committee. Finally common sense prevailed. Also I expect he should not be tried any more in future, unless until he proves his mettle, why he was picked up in the past, which I don't expect coming from that technically poor guy. In my hit-list number 2 person is Sohail Tanveer. What business he is doing in ODIs? Even playing him in T20 is a big liability, chap with no pace/swing/variety and no stamina as a batsmen, which he displayed in his last outing in T20. For what reasons he is playing ODIs, needs lot of guessing...... I will be glad to see him lying miles away from Pakistan National team, when Pakistan is playing any international match. Also, last but not least is UMAR AKMAL. He I think should be told clearly, that he is in team only as a wicket keeper. If he cannot improve his wicket keeping abilities, then please make room for some better wicket keeper who can bat as well.

This match showed how poor SL really are. First they conceded 300+ runs & then on a super flat track with lots of dew they failed to chase it down. Moreover, none of their batsmen could score a 100 when it really mattered. They all seem to have pointless stats. Their senior most batsmen had SRs of <70 when the asking RR was 6 RPO.

Pak fared no better. For a team that supposedly has world class bowlers, it is shameful to concede 300+ runs against a team like SL. If this is what they bowl vs a poor team like SL then how are they any better than India who have really weak & inexp bowlers?

Neither Pak nor SL have come out of this ODI polished. Both of them destroyed each other a little bit, Pak did that to SL a bit more than what SL could do to Pak but mutual destruction it was indeed.

Sri lanken have given away 30 + extra runs by bad fielding and wild bowling . when they were batting another 25 + runs shorter than they used to bcz they played so many dot balls rather getting singles by poor placing and bad timing with the bat. so they are short 50 odd runs all together . But still fought well chasing 320+ while lost of 8 wickets. I think replacing Kulasekara for thirimanna would be better team for next mach

And he of course he failed. 8 wickets are down now. lol

I am sure they will go back to their hiding dens soon because test matches have already begin. Why don't you worry about your team struggling against SA? This is Pak Vs SL match best two teams in Asia playing will be a thrilling contest unlike one sided and boring India Vs SA match. So that explain why so many Indians commentating in here. LOL! From yesterday's match it is quite apparent that Pakistan will win the series comfortably. Like the way India thrashed sri lanka 4-1 in 2012, in lanka's own backyard, Pakistan too will win. The question is can they whitewash the lankans.

  • deshwani on December 19, 2013, 9:02 GMT

@Yousufahmed1 ... you yourself said the truth... your team only boost your ranking to won matches against SRI, Bangladesh, WI and Aus on their own dead pitches!!! you not even win against Pakistan on same pitches or against any world class side on their pitches... its very bad rating from ICC to point out the teams like India..!

  • bouncer709 on December 19, 2013, 8:26 GMT

Umer Akmal was very lucky to survive on the first ball, otherwise he would have got another duck into his record, and throwing his wicket. I don't know why these player while playing so confidently and can hit the ball with proper cricketing shot, try to play this suicide stroke. Afrdi also did the same thing. and in past we have seen Umer Akmal, Hafeez, Misbah, Afridi getting out in such way, but they keep playing like this. In T20 I saw Sharjeel trying to do this, and he got bowled on full-toss. Had he played it normal, he could have hit it easily, same for Afridi yesterday, He could easily dispatch that ball over extra cover. Afridi I know he won't change, But for Akmal and Sharjeel, they should trust their abilities and stick with their proper strokes.

  • Yousufahmed1 on December 19, 2013, 8:22 GMT

@ NextSana Go and check India vs SL for last three years. I know you have been scarred for life All u do is lose and then come back and say "we are happy to give the fight". You will say this after you lose 5-0. We chased 350 runs twice in the last series. LOL. I am eagerly waiting for IND va SL series so we can boost our ranking further. We will be willing to visit SL and thrash you like we did last time. And I almost fell from my chair laughing "winning against Indian bowlers before 40th over", first start winning against India then think about winning in 40 overs. And regarding our bowling, u struggled to put bat to bowl against our bowling in CT and was shot out for under 100 in WI. At least we win matches, series, tournaments. All you think you give is fight. LOL

Pakistan should be care ful...defeating srilanka is not big achievement...and should stop playing against such club level team as indian did ..use less india always played against srilankan aand defeated them all over world ...so pak should sen their b team for match against club level team

next sana @ i thing you mistaken india with lanka , i think is india who chase 321 in hobert against your medicore bowlers and time afrer time hammer lankan bowlers , i thin hafeez will be thankfull to srilanka and he know he can hit the lakmals and the other trundlers all over the park and also bangladeshi batsman can find from against this toothless attack , thats why a legandey fast bowler hogg from australia called the lanka attack medicore when lanka last tour australia.

  • Yousufahmed1 on December 19, 2013, 7:46 GMT

@ Shamsuddin Channa "Because the way sri lankans bat in this match it clearly shows that even a target of more than 300 is not enough to beat them". Maybe you didn't watch the match yesterday go through the scorecard, IT WAS MORE THAN ENOUGH YESTERDAY.

  • deshwani on December 19, 2013, 7:39 GMT

That's the opener we needed since all time... Mr. Sharjeel.. what a hitting... hit sixes in early overs and from a left handed like Warner, Jayasuria, Trescothick, Hayden, Gilchirist, we always miss these kind of openers but now we found it. good and keep it up.. very disappointing from Bhatti.. he should replaced with Rehman in next match because this is not the wicket for fast bowlers... we can strong our spin attack to include Rehman. good luck Pakis.

though sri lankans fight back weakness of middle order batting is not yet cured. Thirimanne should be replaced with withanage. even upul tharanga might be better middle order player than him. they says "thirimanna is next sanga", but it should be changed as "thirimanna is next kapugedara"

  • on December 19, 2013, 7:23 GMT

Well this match has a clear message from Srilankan team that if Pakistan want to win the series here, they can't play their normal "tuk tuk" game and they have to make big scores if they want to survive. Because the way sri lankans bat in this match it clearly shows that even a target of more than 300 is not enough to beat them.

  • NextSana on December 19, 2013, 7:17 GMT

Well played Sri Lanka. I am happy to see the fighting spirit of Sri Lankans unlike Indians who would easily lose by 150+ margin without giving any fight. Other good thing is our youngsters showing class. If Sanga scored 100 and we won people would have said only the seniors winning matches for us. Well played our youngsters.

I think Kusal can single-handedly destroy Pak fast bowling attack but Dilshan needs to step up and attack Hafeez. We can replace Lakmal with Kula so we will have 11 batsmen capable of changing the game at any time.

I also think Pak bowled really well if we played against Indian bowlers we would have won the match even before the 40th over. So congrats to Pakistan also. We have to restrict them below 270 to win against them. Looking forward to see a thrilling series.

  • on December 19, 2013, 6:59 GMT

Pakistan was amazing with the bat. But with the bowl, something was wrong. People say that Pakistan has the BEST bowling? And SL's 7th and 8th batsmen beat the hell out of the "Best Bowlers in The World" SL played EXTREMELY well... I thought that Pak will get an easy win but... SL fought back soooo well that I was walking around my house in tension :D... SL fought like lions and Pak played like hunters... The hunters won, the lions lost... The most important thing is that it was a fair game, nothing more.

  • on December 19, 2013, 6:32 GMT

Good knock by Pakistani batsmen to post a good total, but worst thing is the Captaincy of Misbah. He just bowled 6 overs from Junaid Khan and the match could have been finished earlier by Pakistan if more overs to be bowled by Junaid Khan instead of Bilawal. When will he learn to take brave decisions?

  • Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas on December 19, 2013, 6:32 GMT

  • bouncer709 on December 19, 2013, 6:28 GMT

@Desihungama: I agree with you, bowlers can't do much on such pitch and these conditions. but these people are used to see Pakistan bowling out other teams below 250 most of the times.

  • mhk21 on December 19, 2013, 6:23 GMT

Sharjheel ,what a bloke ! Amazing hand eye coordination with minimal footwork , playing his shots effortlessly . I think Pak only made 300 due to his aggressive approach , i mean the way he played malinga after the bouncer which hit his shoulders . Highlights the importance of positive approach in any form of cricktet , look at Aus-Eng test matches = David warner ,watson , smith.

  • JamesSmithee on December 19, 2013, 6:21 GMT

SL will never learn. They don't need to sit all the hitters until 40th over. Send Thissara at @5. Let him to hit few big shots. The game could won if top order can do a better job with strick rate. At last 15 overs more than 150 was required in a match that required 6.4 per over. SL top order is the weakest top order in the world. But they keep high authority over hitters who actually doing the job for them.

  • FahadNazir on December 19, 2013, 6:20 GMT

A good game overall, the most positive thing was Afridi's sensible hitting. Am not really afridi's fan but the way he is playing in this series is amazing. What I don't understand is "Why Misbah didnt use all of afridi's overs??" , to me it looks like Misbah's favor towards Hafeez. As hafeez needed a man of match and he helped him get one, otherwise his spot in team was doubtful.

  • playfaircricket on December 19, 2013, 6:18 GMT

The srilankan fans who r satisfied with their performance should look their face in mirror & start laughing, This is the Pak team that didn't cross 220 mark for some matches in this uae they r one stage 200/2,Malinga magic has been undone he is outof order from past a debutant hit Malinga 2 6s & 4 ,Lakmal selected ahead of Kula what's the point to select ahead of him , no positives for below par srilanka team in this match except prasanna brilliant bowling allrounder , really poor cricket lanka lost a home match against a kiwi side that whitewashed by bangla and they parly beats the 2nd game so lankan fans accept the worst performance

    nice game good competetion

  • Pak_Guru on December 19, 2013, 6:01 GMT

A very good match.... Pak taking it a bit more easy after the target looked impossible at 35th over mark. Misbah should try Maqsood for a few overs as well. Honestly, I went to sleep with TV on, when 80+ runs were needed of 45 balls with SL spinners in the middle. To my surprise, when I did get up, 14 were need of 6 balls, the article mentions bad bowling and fielding by Pak in the later part. This should be a learning lesson and some innovation please Misbah in field placing and bowling changes. Afridi's understanding of LBW rule is funny. I had mentioned earlier and I repeat Sharjeel Khan look hungry for runs, his batting stance reminds me of the legendary Aussie Mark Taylor and he loves to take singles and stay at the wicket. Added advantage is he can also hit big shots, if he can even have half the temperament and cricketing brain of Taylor, he will be the biggest asset to Pak cricket. Quality ball control and swing is missing from the pace bowling unit. Looking forward to Friday.

  • on December 19, 2013, 5:57 GMT

Good game! As a Sri Lankan, I appreciate our resurrection a lot. No bowler has performed better in this dead pitch. But for Malinga, he should not be excused! He failed! He has no deal with the pitch! He was not in the game. Let Thisara to down further in the batting order and Sachithra to come up due to the belief that Sachithra has better shot selection than Thisara. Thisara too failed both in batting and bowling. SL selected no batsman, rest to play around. That was what Hafees did. SL has Thirimanne, Sanga, Chandimal or Mathews for this role. If one of this player was able to hang around, the result would have been different. I believe this was a youngsters game. Good luck youngsters!

  • Yousufahmed1 on December 19, 2013, 5:53 GMT

@ bouncer709 The same thing was happening during Ind and aus series but you were making fun of the pitches. And if you consider all these scores, what happened during CT when your team scored 180 odd and India chased in 30 odd overs. What happened there?

  • VKohlitheGreat on December 19, 2013, 5:46 GMT

@ DINITH85 : I am glad you spoke about 'hit a 6 in the last ball to win an ODI match' Firstly when the criteria for you is couple of years back, why is it only the current tour for india. If u extend the criteria to a couple of years for India too, there was a match called the World Cup Final, where the man himself, MSDhoni did it with with his signature shot and that my dear friend SL has failed to do ever since cricket began.

  • shoaib.rasheed on December 19, 2013, 5:37 GMT

  • Desihungama on December 19, 2013, 5:29 GMT

I am shocked to hear so many comments from cricket fans bemoaning Pakistan bowling and not having the cricketing acumen to understand that in dew you just cannot put the ball in right area unless you are very experienced. (Only Afridi, Ajmal, Hazeez bowled well). Mostly you end up bowling short and therefore others were duly hammered. Didn't Tanvir and Ajmal had a go too late in 2nd T20?

  • Ammar72 on December 19, 2013, 5:27 GMT

Why Sohail Tanvir included in team?? He usually don't perform well in bowling and perhaps never made a meaningful contribution in batting (may be in a match or two he might have stroked a few boundaries). It was hugely irritating to see him bowl in the death overs and his pathetic bowling had almost cost us the match last night. Its better we play Anwar Ali. Moreover, its not that great from Abdul Hafeez to score hundred on such batting paradise. He was rusty in beginning and probably continued cautious batting was perhaps more to save his place in the team.

  • shahnbej on December 19, 2013, 5:26 GMT

Hafiz was Lucky today because the pitch was full of runs and there was no Stern. And he will cash this century for next 6 months.

  • on December 19, 2013, 5:23 GMT

I think Pakistan have done well to win this game, despite the amazing fight back by the lions. The pitch was an absolute marble, that is why we saw Hafeez make merry, and there was was so much dew. Having them restricted to 7 outs was an accomplishment in its self for a reasonable total, credits to Sri Lanka for fighting back though.

  • bouncer709 on December 19, 2013, 5:23 GMT

@Fonsekkar, @gsingh7: Ok it was flat tack we agree, so what.. both teams scored well also proves it was flat track, but what about the team on track where other team score 350 and they score 140 all out. The other team score 280, in response they all out 134.,,,

  • stormy16 on December 19, 2013, 5:07 GMT

Great game and Pak's total was simply too good to be overun and finally the Pakistan top order click and just shows the talent they have. SL did well in the end thanks to the lower order but the game was lost in the middle overs when Sanga and Kusal fell the run rate slowed and it was always looking for a miracle from there. Man on the match should be Afridi as his 34 off 12 was the difference and he also got the vital wicket of Sanga. SL will take heart from the fact that some of the lessor known players made significant contirbutions, most of all Prasana the legspinner. He offers something dynamic in terms of leggies and long handle. Hafeez is back and about time, I still cant get over the fact this was dropped from the test team, he is simply too good a player and showed his class.

  • bouncer709 on December 19, 2013, 4:56 GMT

I can't understand few people praising Afridi for his consistency in batting, they never think about his consistency in bowling, and won't praise him for bowling. Even yesterday Afridi played very well, but actual difference in the match was his bowling, as he gave away only 30 runs from 7 overs and 2 important wckts, this pitch was set for the batsmen, and during Pakistan inning, see my remarks " The pitch is shinning like mirror, bowlers will need to work hard, even to save 300", where all the bowlers were expensive, and it was expected for them, Afridi did his job in bowling quietly..... It is not Afridi fault when he is not scoring, even doing good bowling, people keep criticizing him for batting, because lake of understanding of cricket, they only think only batting is cricket. and consistency can be judged only in batting.

  • Fijicricket on December 19, 2013, 4:54 GMT

Just another home victory on completely FLAT TRACK!. The sheer hipocracy when teams score over 300 in India, Pakistan fans claim they are bad pitches etc.- victory is not worth anything blah blah, or cannot win away from home despite winning CT in UK or Windies or Zim ! But when same things happen in Pakistans home ground and lay out a doctored pitch or SL visitors, its a good win lolzzz. And for away wins? nothing not even in Zimbabwe or Afghanitan or Bdesh! .

burden of seniors steal the match from SL. both Sanga and Dil and some experienced thiri coudn't reach 70% strike rate. if batsman who has 90% in other side kusal will get his 1st Century and SL win easily. Sang,Dil,Thiri should replace with Tharanga,Kapu,Kituruwan/Ashan. chandi and mathews batted well but both commit suicide for unnecessary run out and couldn't pick the slow ball. there is no need of that single after 13 runs over.Mathews went to shot before baller balled and allow bowler to ball slow. Sekuge and Sachie batted extremely well and almost take away the game from PAK. can't blame them because it's their style. Pak batting is superb and bowling and fielding r average. Good Luck SL 4 next match.

Congratulations to Pakistan. The match was not as close as the scorecard suggests. The eighth wicket pair just threw their bats around after all was lost. Pakist beat Sri Lanka like the way India thrashed the lankans 4-1 in their own backyard.

Hahahaha... When Misbah does not bat, Pakistan crosses 300. Pak youngesters played really well. Afridi provided the icing on the cake. At the end, his two over 34 runs were really the difference. Pakistan bowled badly at the end. Afridi should have finished his quota. Misbah should learn from all this. He does not change his plan according to the situation.

Pakistan inducted two new batsmen( picked from domestic lot) and the results are positive. Umar Akmal is talented but no other Akmals please. Why PCB is not giving a chance to M Rizwan? as he is a regular keeper and a good batsman. Anwar Ali should be given equal chances vis-a-vis Bhatti and please don't trash Usman Khan Shinwari.

High time to bring Umar Gul back in the side, and I noticed Pak bowlers have become a bit rustic after performing on bowling friendly pitches. They have to perform well on batting pitches as well.

Such a small Island but huge cricketers . This is fun to watch does not matter who wins but with brave spirit both teams played it is excellent entertainment. I think both teams put a great show and entertained the world of Cricket. Srilanka is winner in this match for almost took away the solid winning position match from Pakistan. One wonders why the hell Mathews can't whack the ball from the word go without sucking up balls and then playing a nothing shot and getting out...! And had earlier two of the top three batted run a ball or little bit aggressively without being passive then in the end it would have helped Sri Lanka immensely when chasing to close the runs and balls gap. The way these burgers are chasing this massive target without a plan, ominous signs off a defeat at the hands of the Pak's when victory was there for the taking.

  • King_Ravanaa on December 19, 2013, 3:50 GMT

What a great performance from Sri Lanka, no team ever reach 300 mark in the Sharjah when chasing at night, and Sri Lanka almost winning the game. what a tremendous talent we got, Kusal was brilliant the way he batting reminds s great Sanath Jayasuriya for sure.

Toss played the most crucial role in this match. it is quite evident how Batsman cope with easily with the ball in the afternoon session and find it bit difficult to play in the night. however this will boost the Moral of Lankans for sure. it is more enjoyable when a guy called Bhatti who is a new comer sledge Lankans and after he was hammered all over the park. and i must say Cricket Commentary was not neutral at all. Ramiz Raja, Waqar Younis and other guy including Danny Morris quite clearly commenting in favor of Pakistan. so it becomes more enjoyable. and mark my word as i said about 2nd T20 Sri Lanka going to win in the 2nd ODI with their higher confidence and boosted morale

among these batters you need six batters only, other places can be filled with genuine bowlers the likes of Ajantha,Senanayake,Malinga,Nuwan,MalindaPushpakumara,TharinduKhausal,UmeshKarunarathna, Chathuranga de Silva,ChathurangaKumara,CharithJayampathi.

  • Prema1948 on December 19, 2013, 3:39 GMT

It's total ignorance on the part of whomever responsible to employ the sticky footed aging seniors at these frontline batting positions. These vital batting positions are meant for stroke filled young batter of good reflex of great Aravinda's class(e.g. 38-year old Aravinda's innings of 92 in the Supper-six stage of 2003 WC against the fiery pace of Brett Lee on a SAfrican Wkt). You need proper neat strokes all around the wkt to dominate any good bowling attack. You can't dominate even a mediocre bowler in employing risky, reckless, edgy lofted strokes; the possibility of failing could be 5 out of 6 rather than succeeding. These seniors would always make things difficult for the batters to follow. These top positions have to be filled with batters like Chandimal,Mathews,Thrimanne, AngeloPerera,RoshenSilva,NiroshanDickwella,ShehanJayasooriya,BhanukaRajapaksha, DimuthKarunarathna,KithruwanVithanage,KhausalSilva,GayanManeshan, KusalMendis,AshenSilva,KusalJanith,…When you choose2bCNTD

I thoroughly enjoyed by this match due to some reasons. First and foremost, I was fed up with cricket due to one sided matches like that we are thrashing Eng and Saffas thrashing Ind. Second, youngsters from both the teams (Pak and SL) played brilliant (Maqsood, Sharjeel, Prasanna and Sena). This is a good sign for the future of cricket. Upcoming world cups will be very competitive with Aus, SA, Pak and SL at the forefront.

  • supunsn on December 19, 2013, 2:31 GMT

What a fight back last night. Not indeed disappointed of loosing the match. The only disappointment is that seeing the selectors being persistent with Thirimanne. 50 over cricket is not 250+ any more. Its more or less around the 300 figure mark. So if a guy is in the 11 as a batsman he have to have the potential of striking at run a ball so he is not a burden to the team. Coming at No. 6 and striking at 70 is definitely not what is required. If Thiri wants a place in the team it has to like what Badrinath is doing for CSK. Or just leave him for tests and get him back after Sanga retires. It was awesome to see Prasanna and Senanayake striking the ball like that. This is by far the best lower order we ever had with Kula in the team for Lakmal. My 11 for the next WC Kusal,Dili,Sanga,Mahela,Chandi,Mathews,Thisara,Prasanna,Kula,Senanayake,Mali. With 7 bowlers who can ball out the quota and 10 genuine strikers of the cricket ball Sri Lanka would really be hard to beat.

pakistan make 322 and win the match if india score 322 srilanka can chaze inside 40 or 45 ovr so well dn pak team

  • Worldcricketlover on December 19, 2013, 2:24 GMT

This is eye opener for subcontinent teams. Everyone was praising for new pak bowler when they bowled in south Africa but against srilanka they got real hammering. With good bowling still they conceded 300 plus runs. So i guess Indians can not blame as they played on same tracks in India. Good to see Pakistani batsman are performing . I am not about sure hafeez in foreign condition as he is shown against steyn and company which was poor. But yesterday kohli and pujara shown the world how to play on first day track on with has pace , bounce and swing . Though pujara was unfortunate , i was confident that he would have scored century. How many subcontinent batsman can do after just 15 odd test ? Pujara is real gem

great fight from senanayake and prasanna, we could have won this game if thisara perera just stayed in the wicket a little more..keep fighting lions!

  • roook on December 19, 2013, 1:38 GMT

Ahmed shezad is some what of over hyped player he is highly inconsistent played over 40 matches and averages just 29 and has strike rate of just 66.Even His list A average is just 33. I prefer Pakistan should test harris sohail as opener who has better first class record than ahmed shezad and has average of 51 as 41 of ahmed shezad

  • Sinhaya on December 19, 2013, 1:28 GMT

Full credit to both teams for the entertainment last night. No doubt Sherjeel Khan is a great find for Pakistan and good that Hafeez is back in the runs too. Both sides must note that dew affected the bowlers and should not be harsh as the figures show. Glad that the Lankan batsmen tackled Ajmal to see him end up wicketless.

More than anything, as a Lankan fan I am impressed that Kushal Perera, Sachithra Senanayake and Prasanna impressed in some manner. Chandimal too chipped in and shows that we are tuning up for life sans Sanga, Dilshan and Mahela. Full credit too to both teams for dragging both T20s and the 1st ODI to the last minute as winner was hard to judge until the near end. Looking forward to an exciting series.

i am impressed with Sharjeel, he reminds of Saeed Anwar, i hope he don't turn like Nasir Jamshed, Maqsood is good also, they play positive cricket. i hope thses batsman keep Pakistan going for a while.

  • SaadRocx on December 18, 2013, 23:36 GMT

Although Pak wonwa, but seeing Pakistan bowling was a real shocker..I don't know what's wrong the match could've gone either way, some utter pathetic fast bowling display today.. (Only thing which I can understand is that This is not Paks best bowling attack) Hoping for Gul,Amir,Irfan to return.

  • on December 18, 2013, 23:33 GMT

Pak took it lightly after 7 down and nearly paid the price, bowlers were eratic and fielding setting were not properly placed but lucky to be came out as winner,,surprised to see the batting ability of lower order Lanka bowlers,,both sides are even and will be a good contest. Good luck

Congrats pak for the win but i'm proud of our Lions, they put up a lion hearted fight esp sena&prasanna and they almost took it away from pak as misbah was seen nervous and distressed till the last wicket fell.Dont worry SL,i'm sure you can rise again.JAYA SRI.

  • Desihungama on December 18, 2013, 23:27 GMT

I can't believe Shahid Afridi is maturing at twilight of his career. 8000 ODi runs and 400 wickets will surely put him on top of all time all rounders list. Well played Lions!

  • Syed_imran_abbas on December 18, 2013, 23:26 GMT

well played both teams. Thanks God Umer Amin has been dropped. I hope irfan and gul will be fit and back in side soon to take sohail tanvir out. well played youngsters like sharjeel and sohaib maqsood. Hafeez and Afridi showed some lost class. Pakistan must not throw away Nasir jamshed, use as a third opening option. and keep haris sohail in squad for any middle order replacements. Pakistan is getting some balance in side.

  • on December 18, 2013, 23:15 GMT

This my description for this game….was totally entertained: In a hotly-contested one-day international between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, the latter was still able to pull off an exhilarating victory at Sharjah (neutral venue) on Wednesday. Pakistan was definitely indebted to their seasoned batsman Mohammad Hafeez, who cracked a magnificent 122 off 129 balls which punctuated with 7 fours and 4 sixes. His team racked up a competitive 322-5 at the expiration of the 50-overs while Sri Lanka, in reply, huffed and puffed to 311 all out in the final over, losing by 11 runs. Opener Kusal Perera top-scored for Sri Lanka with 64 while Seekkuge Prasanna and Madhushanka Senanayake provided some entertainment towards the end of the innings and evoked a great sense of anxiety in Pakistan's camp with 42 runs apiece.

  • shahnbej on December 18, 2013, 23:11 GMT

For next ODI, either Bhatti , Misbah or both should be rested and give a chance to Anwar and Haris or at least Haris must be in. Misbah should give his place to a youngster.

  • kc69 on December 18, 2013, 23:06 GMT

  • Ali584 on December 18, 2013, 22:56 GMT

Well played both teams! Misbah should had Afridi completed his 10 overs then most probably Pakistan would win this game with big margin as he was doing so well with the ball. Good luck to both teams for next game.

  • Herath-UK on December 18, 2013, 22:39 GMT

Poor thinking by Sri Lanka & they should consider the place of Thrimanne. We won the second T20 because he did not bat & came Prasanna at the top. When Sanga was out it should have been Thisara or Prasanna or Mathew who should have come out to give some impetus to the innings as Chandimal too was not hitting well. The habit now is to send Thisara at the death overs where he has no time to adjust thus not getting the best out of his talent. Prasanna is the find of the tour so far & good to see Senanayake has sharpened his batting. Ranil Herath - Kent

Better give rest Professor Hafeez in the next match,so Pakistan can get better performance by him in the last matches.

  • Reverse-_-Sweep on December 18, 2013, 21:38 GMT

Pakistan badly need Irfan or Gul in the place of proven(kukri) Sohail Tanveer. I would say that Anwar Ali is a better choice than bhatti. Overall Well Played Pakistan, but bowling is lacking since irfan got injured. 1) Shehzad 2) Sharjeel 3) Maqsood 4) Akmal 5)Misbah 6) Hafeez 7) Afridi 8) Anwar Ali 9) Ajmal 10) Gul / irfan 11) Junaid is a Match wining combination. Harris Sohail can be included if Anwar Ali doesn't perform :D

  • on December 18, 2013, 21:30 GMT

Hafeez still needs to go. He had negative body language and just one time flash in the pan should not influence the decision to give him a long needed rest

  • on December 18, 2013, 21:11 GMT

Everything is good except Pakistan's careless bowling & SL's miss fielding. Afridi could have completed his 10 Overs of bowling.

  • TrueIndian4ever on December 18, 2013, 20:59 GMT

I wish India can borrow/buy one or two pakistani bowlers. Just Ajmal and afridi, maybe Irfan.

  • on December 18, 2013, 20:52 GMT

Pakistan had a close encounter with defeat! They relaxed too early in the match and gave Lanka a chance to hit back. Pakistan should have finished the game while they were on top by strangling the Lankans instead of hoping for an automatic surrender by the opposition! Lankans will probably win the next match.

  • on December 18, 2013, 20:47 GMT

Afridi didn't bowl his full overs, simply because of Dew and also senyake and Parsana are very good against spinners, Pakistan bowlers were bowling too many short balls, don't blame everything to Misbah , he is doing great job, If Ahmed fails again in Next game then they should try Haris Sohail as an opener. What can I say Akmals and their keeping lol

  • roook on December 18, 2013, 20:46 GMT

Pakistan bowling was poor and lack disciplined where are those yokers. Is junaid khan injured he got 3 wickets and still bowled 6 overs, afridi was under bowled misbah seems really perplexed and confused when those young srilankan allrounder started ponding pakistan bowling.

  • mhk21 on December 18, 2013, 20:39 GMT

Honestly a good game of cricket ! excellent batting from sharjeel , took the attack towards Srilankan bowling which pak were lacking for a long time in previous games . Hafeez played wonderfully and showed his true value with the bat and the bowl , he is a very valuable player to have in any side ,being more than capable batsmen and a very reliable offspinner . Maqsood was very good as well , he bats sensibly and is a real find for the middle order , he can be a very good finisher if groomed properly as he hit big while also can bat sensibly to keep the scoreboard moving . Though the Srilankan batsmen played well but dew was a big factor on how the Pak bowlers bowled as they were finding extremely hard to grip the bowl and bowl yorkers at the end of which srilankan batsmen made full use . A good thrilling game in the end and deserving team won rightly so .

  • RayyanAli on December 18, 2013, 20:20 GMT

Sohail Tanvir is really crap. Both him and Bilawal Bhatti should be replaced as soon as possible. Atleast Sohail Tanvir should be sacked immediately. As long as such bowlers are there in the team, Pakistan do not deserve to say it a best bowling attack at all.

whoever is thinking that Pak bowling isnt good enough they are out of their mind!!

Umar amin and Asad better stay far away from the team, Jamshed is the only player will make a come back! Misbah has to stay till 2015 WC, hes making this team better and better!!

  • drnaveed on December 18, 2013, 20:10 GMT

excellent cricket match. had suspense till the end.Pakistan should use the review better than what they have done recently. they should improve their ground fielding, and misbah should use the bowling options well. afridi should have bowled his 10 overs.Pakistani spinners kept the run rate checked, so another 3 overs of afridi could have made some difference. where have bhatti's yorkers gone?. he bowled them so well in the SA series, here , he is just bowling short stuff.

  • Stark62 on December 18, 2013, 20:08 GMT

    Typical Hafeez!!

He scores against the lesser bowling attacks but once faced against high quality pace (SA, Aus, Eng and Nz), he crumbles like a school boy and can't buy a run. This will be problematic in the future because the WC isn't too far off and it's being played in Aus, where he will fail miserably and dash Pakistan's hopes of gaining anything from the tournament.

Also, this is the second time Hafeez (he called for two) has run out Maqsood, plus shoved him down the order in T20's and I think, he is afraid of Maqsood taking his place and ousting him from the team.

Lastly, would like to see U. Akmal at no. 4 (best player of pace in Pak), along with Maqsood at one down.

  • on December 18, 2013, 20:07 GMT

well done team pak..pak batting got more strength now with maqsood and sharjeel..what a tremendous batting from pak..really fantastic..i dont know why pcb giving chances to asad shafiq nd umar amin...

Well right from ball one it looked like a contest between 2 equals. However the most positive point of this match is that youngsters from both sides showed some promise. Now its up to the respective teams to groom them for future rather than clinging on to some old timers.Being an Indian fan all i can say is well done both sides instead of my initial predictions now it seems to be an interesting series ahead with both sides performing.

  • gsingh7 on December 18, 2013, 19:50 GMT

sl fell short again when they needed to keep their nerve. pak bowled badly and where are those people who branded pakistan as top class . they conceded more than 300 on turning sharjah wicket where 300 was never scored in 2nd innings. i guess pitches play a big role in bowling below 250 or above 300 .

  • on December 18, 2013, 19:50 GMT

Its very nice to see pakiatan score 322 runs as they bat as good our best batsman misbah did not even come to bat before all top order goes early and only misbah was playing . pakistan hit 14 sixes in match since 2002. The way Afridi replying to criticism upon him is very good.

  • TJ-Sh on December 18, 2013, 19:48 GMT

poor match planning by Misbah, Afridi was really bowling according to the situation, should have completed 10 overs.

  • Haz95 on December 18, 2013, 19:47 GMT

If Pakistan need a good bowler, Mohammed Talha, Ehsan Adil and most of all, SADAF HUSSAIN are waiting. Bilawal bhatti was promising in his first few games but now, I'm worrying. Anwar Ali can be the allrounder since he's a better batsman and more or less equal bowler. Sadaf is on an elite league and he isn't being chosen even after taking 9 in an innings twice :O. Ehsan was dropped and so was Talha when they keep consisting with slowasshell tanvir. Tanvir can barely justify his role in T20s but ODIs, come on! Batting today was brilliant, If Umar was simply a specialist, there would have been more runs on the board as well as more catches behind and run saves, Wicket Keeping isn't his thing. If a wicketkeeper batsman is needed bring in Moh Rizwan and make Umar a specialist again, if not he can go an we can replacce him with Fawad Alam or Haris Sohail. Sharjeel and Maqsood both I believe have the potential to be consistent performers, something Ahmed should master..

  • khs_shk2000 on December 18, 2013, 19:47 GMT

Frankly Sri lanka deserved to win this game, Pakistan were sloppy both in bowling and fielding in the last 7 overs, Sri lankans Prasanna and Senanayake batted superbly, eye opener for Pak bowling. With this fast bowling they have no chance of winning the series, hope Misbah realises this.

  • on December 18, 2013, 19:42 GMT

gr8 game tdy . Congrats to Pakistan and kudos to SL for putting up a rear end scare .. Shows the importance of rotating the strike and getting singles when the boundaries are hard to come by.. The margin of defeat shows how close it was and SL could have won this by a bit of street smart cricket . Well played both teams ..

  • SILVERSANGA on December 18, 2013, 19:41 GMT

@ VKohlitheGreat I thought both Senanayake and Seekkuge, two no named lower order batsmen too have proved their capabilities and why Sri lankan batting depth is so strong. Even after being 210/7 still we couldn't be put away! What a tremendous fight back! They almost won the game for us! Senanayaka is the one who hit a 6 in the last ball to win an ODI match in SA couple of years back. Which India has been failing to do so far in their current tour lol?

Sri Lanka's only hope is the dew? Lol they came just 11 runs short without the dew.

  • on December 18, 2013, 19:38 GMT

Pak almost gave in! Lousy bowling from Junaid (though he got wickets), and Bhatti. Tanvir was a bit better. Misbah should have had Afridy bowl more overs, might have gotten 1 or 2 more wickets! It is unfair to put Bhatti in place of Anwar in ODI. Anwar was Man Of Match is SA and it was his right to be in the ODI eleven. As usual, in Pak cricket setup, some players are more equal than others!

  • yorkslanka on December 18, 2013, 19:34 GMT

@sadsajith- you are obviously entitled to your opinion but i have to disagree my friend. I think Mathews had to play carefully thanks to the fact that thirrimanne threw his wicket away with poor shot selection. time and time again he has had to rescue and hold up the lower order. Mathews is easily one of the best finishers in the world and anyone who has played cricket knowsd how difficult a role this is..he is the right man to take our team forward (in all three formats) imho..

  • Haz95 on December 18, 2013, 19:34 GMT

Terrific perfomance from both sides in batting and SOME bowling... This match was very similar to their last T20s Hafeez 122 was like Pereras 84, Sangakkaras was like Maqsoods, Dilshans was like Sharjeels and and prasannas blaze was like Afridis today....then you have that lower order partnership which caused a shock for the defenders.

  • on December 18, 2013, 19:32 GMT

Wow! This is why I like to watch SL vs Pak matches so much. The countries don't bring any sort of prior baggage to the game. They just come and play their hearts out and the spectators more often than not get their money's worth. Hope the series continues this way. Congrats Pak, from a SL fan!!!

  • Prabhash1985 on December 18, 2013, 19:32 GMT

A simple rule of sending a big hitter could have made the things much simple. Had they sent Thisara or Prasanna up the order, probably instead of Thirimanna, we could have won. Malinga, for gods sake, should bad last. In MCG, he did really well, but man, he always does crazy stuff.

  • on December 18, 2013, 19:29 GMT

The things which excite the Pak/SL fans are the attacking and never-lacking fight of both the Asian giants and friendly-foes. Because of these qualities both the mighty champions come face to face in 'the last-man standing' nature of combat in the mega events since Imran/de Silva and J.Miandad/Ranatunga till Sangakkara/Misbah and Malinga/Afridi.Well, this series is also being watched with that similar gusto and jubilation spiced with the inclusion of some young talented stars from both the XIs.Anxiously waiting for the one of the more Asian style fights characterized by spin bowling mastery and a splendid display of nerve-holding art which always is the foremost specialty of both the heavy-weight champions. If Pak/Ind matches are considered the harbinger of ultimate excitement then what to term Pak/SL rumbles where fans don'twant to miss a single ball to watch!!!The twin T20s have added fuel to that ecstasy!!! Both Pak/SL fans expect more from the youngsters to perform well before WC!

  • sadSajith on December 18, 2013, 19:19 GMT

Even if Sri Lanka came close to win there shouldn't forget the fact that they were playing really bad cricket in middle overs, In middle overs it is very poor cricket from Sri Lanka due to effect of Mathews mentality. It is very clear that even a captain is not in the middle his mentality is in the team. Mathews is great player, he has taken the team home few memorable occasions (not to mention MCG miracle). But since then very often he helps to create that kind of situations when things can go better and then try to do miracles. MCG was great because he hasn't had anywhere to go other than playing like that. But today in a pressure situation like that he played intentional dot balls even in power plays and make things even more difficult. The fact is when he gets out in these kind of matches it is considered that he got out because of the situation. But the fact is he helps to creates that situation. Sri lanka has to decide to make miracles or to become a consistence side.

  • Sports4Youth on December 18, 2013, 19:16 GMT

@ bouncer709 : Totally agreed with you. AFRIDI's numbers were great at 30 for 2 in 7 overs. Then why did he have to remove Afridi from the attack. It looks like MISBAH did not want Afridi getting too many wickets.

  • Zahidsaltin on December 18, 2013, 19:15 GMT

None of these Pakistan fast bowlers are fit to be playing ODI. They bowl 2-3 short balls an over and these short ones are not bouncers but some gifts to be pulled. Pakistan needs Irfan and Gul. Selection of Bhatti is the biggest joke in Pakistan cricket. We are so desperate on our batting side that only because Bhatti can score 10 to 20 runs so we don't care if he has no sense of line and length. He is nothing but a bad immitation of Mohammad Sami.

  • many07 on December 18, 2013, 19:15 GMT

It is easy to chase on flat track..........isn't it.........no its not.........well played PAK.....better luck next time SL.

  • Sports4Youth on December 18, 2013, 19:14 GMT

When will MISBAH stop trusting TANVIR so much. TANVIR hardly gets wickets. He also gets pasted quite often. Tanvir is not suitable for 50 over cricket, He may be ok for T20 cricket. I hope Misbah eiither plays a wicket taker in this place or get in Anwar Ali.

  • on December 18, 2013, 19:12 GMT

If this match ended up so close then Pakistan need to be aware of the remaining matches. Pakistan may have won this one but if Sri Lanka can get so close to such a large target then Pakistan have a lot to think about future matches. Pakistan's batting fired today but it usually doesn't and given that Sri Lanka reached so close to this mammoth total, it appears difficult that Pakistan will win this series.

  • yorkslanka on December 18, 2013, 19:12 GMT

Congratulations to Pakistan on a thrilling win..what a fantastic game of cricket and whilst I am sad that we didnt get over the line, i am happy that we got SO close. Great cameo innings from Prasana and Senanayake to get us to within touching distance..The disappointments for me were that Thirrimanne didnt play to his strength and try to play big shots when he cant and threw his wicket away. Also Chandimal did the hard work but then lost his head in the batting powerplay..still again well done to our Pakistani brothers and also well done to our boys for putting up a really good fight.looks like it will be a great series..

  • on December 18, 2013, 19:12 GMT

well played sri lanka. youngsters need chance like this. im very happy with the team. .but we need kulasekara on the team instead of Lakmal. then Sri Lanka is very balanced team

  • VKohlitheGreat on December 18, 2013, 19:10 GMT

SL never looked to win this at any moment in their batting innings and what a sorry story wud it be had dew not come into picture and afridi got to bowl his full quota of overs.

Love the thriller. We'll played lions too..

  • romirom on December 18, 2013, 19:08 GMT

i really dont undeerstand why misbah doesnt give bowl to junaid. he is the best bowler in this line up even he was expensive in his earlier over he is very good depth bowler. tanvir and bhatti almost lost the game for pak. thanks to junaid last over.

  • on December 18, 2013, 19:08 GMT

ali ayaz: when you look at stats make sure you have enuf knowledge to differentiate between tests and odis.Hafeez is having 42 sixes to his name in Odis.

  • on December 18, 2013, 19:07 GMT

Well played by both teams. Paksitan batted very well. sharjeel started off really good. and played a great debut innings. Hafeez scored a 100. Much needed runs for him. Paced his innings well. Maqsood once again showed his good skill and played a good innings. And in the end a superb innings by Afridi finished it well. The important thing is that this is 3rd innings in row that he has scored some runs and playing very well. good effort from batsmen. few misfields by Pakistanis during the pressure moments. Ajmal bowled well. Hafeez and afridi were very good with the bowl. But fast bowlers were way too expensive.

But once again junaid's last over did the trick for pak.

SL started well but lost a bit of the way in middle. But Senanayake & Prasanna did great in the end and that partnership was superb. Scoring around 12 per over. Hitting boundaries at will. 87 in 7.3 overs was brilliant stuff.

Good game of cricket and out of no where it gets to last over and so close. good exciting game

  • on December 18, 2013, 19:06 GMT

  • on December 18, 2013, 19:04 GMT

There must be some reasons behind that why Misbah is not giving Afridi and Junaid the ball ...

  • bouncer709 on December 18, 2013, 18:48 GMT

one again poor from Misbah, forget that Afridi 7 overs 30 runs still had 3 overs remaining, he is wicket taking bowler, and also Junaid was going expensive but he can take wickets.

  • on December 18, 2013, 18:45 GMT

I couldn't understand the writer praised Hafeez for his century or criticizing him for not accelerating the innings at the end.

  • on December 18, 2013, 18:08 GMT

Scrap my last comment. In my excitement I didn't notice that I was looking at his test stats. For the record, he's hit 46 sixes in ODIs. Hence he smashed approx 9% of his ODI sixes today, so my 25% comment was wrong. With due apologies :)

  • on December 18, 2013, 18:04 GMT

Interesting stat: including this match #PAKvsSL Hafeez has hit a total of 16 sixes in ODIs. Today he smashed 4 of those 16. Which means he hit 25% of his ODI career's sixes in today's match.

  • Iceman29 on December 18, 2013, 17:39 GMT

@Abdul Rauf: first of all congrats to your team who scored such huge total...you are right some of our fellow country men are commenting here in this match...that is because the regular harsh comments by some of the fans (not all) who has been posting constantly in every Indian forum...Peace to all...and best wishes to both teams...

  • Yousufahmed1 on December 18, 2013, 17:28 GMT

Pak has a serious situation here. Two of the most talented young SL's(as per them world's) batsmen are at the crease. Thirrimanne & Chadimal(Emerging player of the year 2 years in a row in SL), with a consistent average of 28 & 30 respectively, with a destructive S/R of 67 & 70 respectively are at the crease. This match is in the bag for SL.

  • VKohlitheGreat on December 18, 2013, 17:22 GMT

Amidst all the flat track comments from romirom, SLslider; I forgot to mention a word for the humongous sixes by afridi, maybe SL could do a few fielders outside the stadium so the balls can come back rather sooner.

1.They wins the match regardless dew no dew or any other factors you mentioned..

2.Even if they lose but still shows fight...

Pakistan used to play well against us even when we had the lights of Jayasuriya, Murali and Vass.. I have always loved SL vs Pakistan matches bcz both teams used to be at the top of their game. It has always been close encounters unlike the last time Pakistan toured India where Pakistan won comfortably in an one sided affair :) After a great display of batting by Pakistan today, Lankans are up for it. 60/0 11.. Strong reply from them. Hoping for a thrilling contest.

game is on. srilanka got terrific start from dilshan and perera. looks very very flat track and dew factor against pakistan.

  • SLslider on December 18, 2013, 15:20 GMT

Track looks really flat and that was the reason Mediocre PAK batting was able to cross 300. We could see batsmen reflection on the pitch. Such a highway. I am sure we will win this in under 35 overs. Hammering in store for PAK bowlers. LOL

  • VKohlitheGreat on December 18, 2013, 15:19 GMT

@ Tal_Botvinnik : Agreed with anything and everything you all say, Indian bowlers can't bowl, Indian batsmen can't bat, Indian fielders can't catch and field.. My only question, why doesn't SL beat India? Why oh Why?

  • yorkslanka on December 18, 2013, 15:18 GMT

well batted to Hafeez on silencing his many critics with a ton..we are gonna have to bat well to get this big score...good luck Sri Lanka

  • Harmony111 on December 18, 2013, 15:13 GMT

I am trying to imagine the possible scenarios:

    .

#1: If SL lose, as it seems likely:

#1a: And then say that this was a pacy & bouncy wicket then what happened to SL's strong bowling attack?

#1b: It would also mean that SL can't bat or bowl on fast & bouncy wickets.

#1c: Or then say that this was a slow wicket then it would mean SL can't chase even on flat tracks, unlike India who can chase even 350+.

#1d: If one of their batsmen get a 100 then it was a selfish knock.

    .

    #2: If SL win (improbable):

#2a: If there is dew then it would mean SL were helped by the dew, just as they say for India & refuse to admire their chases.

#2b: If they win in the last over then obviously it was a close tense chase where SL got lucky.

#2c: If none of their batsmen get a 100 then they are way behind Kohli who does that habitually.

    . . .

So the only way SL can get a win worth admiration today is if they win this match with plenty of balls left, with an unbeaten 100 by one of them, in no dew.

  • on December 18, 2013, 15:12 GMT

  • anoop3301 on December 18, 2013, 15:10 GMT

If Sri Lanka wants to improve as an international team, they need to make drastic improvements in the quality of cricket they play. As of now, they play equally well on every surface. Or let me put it this way, equally badly.

  • Sheerie on December 18, 2013, 15:05 GMT

Wel played pakistan! But i want to say to people who are already criticising youngsters, please dont say things if you dont know nothing. Finally pakistan got some good talented agressive batsmen which pakistan always lacks off. Sharjeel khan hasnt have a good footwork, but the way he plays it is not neccesary to have a good footwork. Look at gayle, sehwag, mccullum, jesse ryder etc. I d rather have a player with no footwork but scores quick with average of 45-50 than somebody like misbah with footwork, average 45 strike rate 73 or Hafeez with strike rate 70 average 29 LOL! And Maqsood is such a great player to watch, the way he plays the ball is brilliant! Only thing is he likes to drive, so he need to learn quickly play the short ball cut! But we should not get over excited because it was pretty good batting pitch. To be honest i dont like hafeez at all and yes he played good today but still he is not good enough and i hope the pcb sees that as soon as possible!

Well played by Pakistan, but will it be enough? Sri Lanka doesn't often struggle with Pakistan bowling the way other teams do. Good luck, Lankans, but let us win. Lol.

LOL indians are out again after kholi getting a hundred. DONT get excited too soon indian fans u will get smashed soon when SA comes to bat. I'm pretty sure SA is letting u to get to a competitive total so that they can chase something when they come out. LOLL

  • on December 18, 2013, 14:43 GMT

Hafeez was little selfish to cause the run out of Sohaib, Hafeez scored 19 of 16 after the Sohaib run out and that's including a 6 on full toss, I think Pakistan is still short of 27 Runs. I wish Pakistan had played against NZ in NZ then this would av been Hafeez's last series, Now I have to bare him for another 6 months, but in-Sha-Allah he won't be Part of WC2015 Squad. Kamran Gohar would be good replacement for Him. Must say it was positive move by Misbah sending Afridi up The order. Good Luck Pak

  • Haz95 on December 18, 2013, 14:43 GMT

Exceptional batting display Pakistan. Don't get me wrong, Misbah is paks best but whenever he doesn't bat or doesn't score, Pak seems to make 300+ targets, hmmm. Nevertheless, Hafeez has answered me and many other critics however its a weird coincidence that Maqsood has been run out TWICE due to Hafeez, hmmm....Still worried about his place o_O? Afridi was on fire and he did more than I expected, kudos to him and Sharjeel is another brilliant find, hopefully he improves his technique and he can be our Saeed Anwar and not another Jamshed. Good target boys and since our Bowling is taking its strongest line up I hope they live to standards, Bilawal must play how he did in SA for this and we can save this as this total is a mammoth(unless its india :P). Oh and good pak left Tanv and Umar Amin out, tanvir I believe is still good for T20s tho. Good Luck both teams...

  • VKohlitheGreat on December 18, 2013, 14:43 GMT

  • xylofon on December 18, 2013, 13:26 GMT

Constructive criticism is very important, Sharjeel lacks footwork and I hate to be the one to say I told you so later on but we have to keep calm here. He has to be consistent, I cant help but feel if he hadnt exploded earlier we were looking at a century or either way a higher score than what he did. Having said that he is an exciting prospect; but that is all.

Right now Ahmed Shehzad is out of form so please in with Haris Sohail in the next match.

  • on December 18, 2013, 12:54 GMT

Well played by Sharjeel. He looked very composed. And it was not mad hitting most of the time. Thats what you need controlled aggression. In past month, few of pakistani debutants performing very good.

anwar and bhatti won us 1st odi vs SA by their all round performance. Then Maqsood scored 50. Now sharjeel scoring a good 50. when your youngsters are continuously out performing seniors then there is surely some issues to address.

I think its time for Ahmed and umar to take more responsibility. They should make their starts count. and take the responsibility. 30-40s are not good enough all the time. Maqsood also has a habit of not making starts count. and we have already seen plenty of 20s 30s.

Sharjeel played well for his innings but it was a bit disappointing end. It was a good catch but he did played uppish on 56 and dropped. Should try to go big after the start.

Well played by Hafeez. Looking set to score big today.

Pakistan need to score extra runs for dew factor.

@CricIndia208 ; You meant how to lose against Sri Lanka by big margins like India did by 161 runs a few months ago. Perhaps you guys should learn how to beat South Africa from Sri Lankans coz you are looking at 2-0 whitewash right now.
