Zimbabwe in Pakistan ODI Series - 5th ODI

Pakistan v Zimbabwe

Pakistan won by 7 wickets (with 114 balls remaining)

Hi there. So yet another dead-rubber situation but Pakistan are trying their bench strength while Zimbabwe seek to become an opponent that can be respected. So, in that sense, all to play for. See, I have to find a way to hype this match na?!

Zimbabwe know where their problem lies. Masakadza said: ""We have made a habit of starting well. We bowl well at the start but we let the initiative slip in the middle overs resulting in easy runs for Pakistan's batsmen and thus a loss of pressure. The same has been the case with our batting. We get decent starts but we fail to finish things off and a less-than-competitive total against Pakistan's strong and experienced line-up is what we offer."

Pakistan gave chances to Nasir Jamshed, Khalid Latif, Sohail Khan and Samiullah Khan Niazi and have now called in Abdur Rauf, Wahab Riaz, Khurram Manzoor, Naumanullah and Rizwan Ahmed. Will Rauf finally be given a chance or will Riaz get the nod. Remember, Pakistan have dismissed Zimbabwe just once in the series.

And for Zimbabwe fans: "Sheikhupura is known for its historical places, and is commonly known locally as Qila Shaikhupura, because of the fort in the city, constructed by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir." And as you would have guessed, its lifted straight from Wikipedia. Click here to read about this industrial town.

And for Pakistan fans how many of you have gone to the famous hunting complex - Hiran Minar ? Mughalgardens.org informs me that the minar was built by the emperor Jahangir in 1606 in honour of a pet hunting antelope named Mansraj.

And a kill-joy colleague reminds me, "I don't think anyone is reading your commentary" Hmm! These are not colleagues but infidels! What do they know that only cricket know and all that jazz. There must be at least one interested Pakistani or a small boy somewhere in Zimbabwe reading this!

Pitch Flat track. Plenty of runs. But early start might have some thing for the bowlers. The experts reckon there might be some thing for the seamers early on but should turn out to be a flat track.

Toss Masakadza calls tails and tails it is. " It looks pretty flat, I don't see it seaming around. So we will bat first."

So four guys will make their debuts. Manzoor, Riaz, Rizwan and Rauf.

I am Sriram Veera and will bring you all the action today.

0.1

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, 1 wide, Right. Here we go. A wide to start of the proceedings. Off side wide, if you are really curious.

0.1

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, no run, full pitched, on the middle and leg and Sibanda leans forward, covers for the angle and defends

0.2

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, 1 run, chance for a run out. Missed. It was pushed to backward point, yes, no and Fawad Alam fires in a throw but he is not accurate

0.3

Sohail Tanvir to Masakadza, no run, down the leg side, he tries a whipping flick shot and if you went with the fury of the bat swing, the ball should have sailed over the boundary but then, he didn't make any contact.

0.4

Sohail Tanvir to Masakadza, no run, in the channel outside off stump and is left alone.

0.5

Sohail Tanvir to Masakadza, no run, Caught at first slip by Misbah. Oh no. Wait. Did it bounce? It was slanted across Masakadza who stabbed it low to first slip where Misbah tries to get his fingers around it and he is confident he has caught it cleanly. Masakadza stands his ground and it is refered upstairs. The replays didn't give proper angles to confirm whether it bounced. The benefit of doubt goes to the batsman. If you really put a gun on my head and ask me to make a decision, I think it was OK. It rolled up his fingers but then as I said the replays were not great. Who knows it might have bounced.

0.6

Sohail Tanvir to Masakadza, 1 wide, down the leg side, attempted a flick shot

0.6

Sohail Tanvir to Masakadza, 1 wide

0.6

Sohail Tanvir to Masakadza, 1 wide, another wide down the leg side

0.6

Sohail Tanvir to Masakadza, no run, ah finally its really over. In the zone outside off, left alone

End of over 1 (5 runs) Zimbabwe 5/0 (RR: 5.00)
H Masakadza    0* (4b)      Sohail Tanvir    1-0-5-0
V Sibanda    1* (2b)

1.1

Abdur Rauf to Sibanda, no run, here we go. Rauf's first delivery. He has been bowling well for the last four years in first-class. Good start. Seaming delivery in the zone outside off stump and is left alone

1.2

Abdur Rauf to Sibanda, no run, And again. Open-chested action. Will track his speed from the next ball.

1.3

Abdur Rauf to Sibanda, FOUR, Some swing there. Full pitched and outside off stump, sucked the batsman forward and he went for a cover drive and the ball took it through point. The broadcasters are not showing the speed guns . So can't give you the speed.

1.4

Abdur Rauf to Sibanda, 2 runs, slips on to the pads and is flicked away

1.5

Abdur Rauf to Sibanda, no run, ah we got one here. Around 131 kmph length delivery on the off stump, bit of a heavy ball too and is defended to the leg side

1.6

Abdur Rauf to Sibanda, no run, good probing delivery. It cut in a touch, off a length, from just outside off and the batsman jabs at it and gets an inside edge. Not a bad first over that.

End of over 2 (6 runs) Zimbabwe 11/0 (RR: 5.50)
V Sibanda    7* (8b 1x4)      Abdur Rauf    1-0-6-0
H Masakadza    0* (4b)      Sohail Tanvir    1-0-5-0

2.1

Sohail Tanvir to Masakadza, 1 run, fullish, on the middle and leg, turned to mid-on

2.2

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, no run

2.3

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, no run, beaten again. Curving delivery, the one that leaves the right-hand batsman and he is beaten, lunging forward to defend

Two slips in place

2.4

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, no run, shuffles across to cover for the angle and pushes to covers. Tanvir doesn't quite bend it back in as much and hence he is shuffling.

2.5

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, no run, tries to get it back in but ends up on the pads and the ball rolls away. The shuffle meant the batsman was not in great position to flick it away.

2.6

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, no run, on the middle and leg and is struck on the thigh pad

End of over 3 (1 run) Zimbabwe 12/0 (RR: 4.00)
V Sibanda    7* (13b 1x4)      Sohail Tanvir    2-0-6-0
H Masakadza    1* (5b)      Abdur Rauf    1-0-6-0

3.1

Abdur Rauf to Masakadza, 2 no balls, cuts in from outside off stump, evades the defensive stroke and strikes high on the pad. But then, its a no-ball.

Free hit coming up

3.1

Abdur Rauf to Sibanda, no run, swing and a miss. In the zone outside off stump and he tried to slog it over mid-on but the bat met air and the ball nestled into the 'keeper's gloves

3.2

Abdur Rauf to Sibanda, 1 run, 130 kmph delivery on the middle stump, worked behind square for a single

3.3

Abdur Rauf to Masakadza, 3 runs, full pitched on the middle stump line, placed to right of mid-off and well timed too,

3.4

Abdur Rauf to Sibanda, 1 run, tip and run, pushed to extra covers for a quick single

3.5

Abdur Rauf to Masakadza, 1 run, 120.6 kmph on the off and middle, tapped to midwicket region and again they are off for the quick single.

3.6

Abdur Rauf to Sibanda, 1 leg bye, shout for lbw but Aleem Dar is not impressed. Good shout too. It landed full in length and came in a touch, the batsman was on the forward lunge and was struck. Perhaps, he was outside the line.

End of over 4 (9 runs) Zimbabwe 21/0 (RR: 5.25)
V Sibanda    9* (17b 1x4)      Abdur Rauf    2-0-14-0
H Masakadza    5* (8b)      Sohail Tanvir    2-0-6-0

4.1

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, 2 runs, full and wide, reaches out for it and goes for a cover drive. The ball makes contact with the bottom half of the bat and so he doesn't get much power but does get his placement right

4.2

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, no run, sweetly timed this time but good diving stop at covers

4.3

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, no run, from round the stumps, misses a flick shot but no wide signal

That appeal off the last ball of last over: The replays show that the batsman was hit in line, not outside off but Dar is seen indicating that it would have gone over the stumps.

4.4

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, no run, fullish, flicked to right of midwicket where Rizwan dives to his right to cut it off.

4.5

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, no run, full pitched, driven to mid-off

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, no run, leans forward to defend a length delivery to covers

End of over 5 (2 runs) Zimbabwe 23/0 (RR: 4.60)
V Sibanda    11* (23b 1x4)      Sohail Tanvir    3-0-8-0
H Masakadza    5* (8b)      Abdur Rauf    2-0-14-0

5.1

Abdur Rauf to Masakadza, no run

5.2

Abdur Rauf to Masakadza, no run, beaten. In the zone outside off and he pushed inside the line

Fawad from USA has a grave message for us: " am reading your commentary.. even though being a Pakistani fan, I had lost much of the interest in cricket after the world cup.. but I just had a fight with my wife.. and that disappointed me to the extent that im reading this commentary on pak vs. zimbabwe.. p.s: if you aren't married yet.. dont ever"

5.3

Abdur Rauf to Masakadza, no run, homing in on the off stump and is defended to the off side

5.4

Abdur Rauf to Masakadza, no run, 131.3 kmph length delivery on the off stump, straightens and is pushed to the leg side.

5.5

Abdur Rauf to Masakadza, OUT, What a catch to get your first wicket! Don't trust your fielders, take it yourself, says Rauf. Full in length, on the off stump and is driven low to him and Rauf picks it off his shoe laces in one fluent motion.

H Masakadza c & b Abdur Rauf 5 (31m 13b 0x4 0x6) SR: 38.46

He has a nice relaxed run-up, gets close to the stumps on release.

5.6

Abdur Rauf to Williams, 1 no ball, sharp bouncer, swayed away but he had overstepped the mark. And the speed gun shows 112 kmph. Uff! I don't trust that gun.

Shahryar Dar, from USA: "I visited Hiran Minar in my 4th grade. It was summer 1979. There is also mizar of famous sufi poet Waris Shah in Jandiala Shair Khan, Sheikhupura. Aaqib Javed, Rana Naveed, and Muhammad Asid are also from sheikhupura."

5.6

Abdur Rauf to Williams, 1 run, moves outside leg and has a slog and all he gets is an inside edge to fine leg region

End of over 6 (2 runs) Zimbabwe 25/1 (RR: 4.16)
SC Williams    1* (2b)      Abdur Rauf    3-0-16-1
V Sibanda    11* (23b 1x4)      Sohail Tanvir    3-0-8-0

6.1

Sohail Tanvir to Williams, no run, full and outside off stump, Williams goes for an airy drive and is beaten

Adeel too is going through a rough patch as he chirps in, "I think Fawad is 100% correct. "

6.2

Sohail Tanvir to Williams, no run, 126.9 kmph delivery on the off and middle, defended to the off side

6.3

Sohail Tanvir to Williams, no run, cuts in from just outside off stump, beats the intended prod and strikes him on the pad but its going down the leg side and they don't bother appealing

6.4

Sohail Tanvir to Williams, no run, short-pitched delivery and Williams can't connect with his pull shot. It is getting dark out there. Sikhander Bakht, on air, reckons the conditions should favour the seamers

6.5

Sohail Tanvir to Williams, no run, good probing delivery just ouside off, again shaping in but Williams covers his off stump and lets it go past him

6.6

Sohail Tanvir to Williams, no run, beaten. This time, Williams goes for an off drive and the ball cuts in to thread the bat and pad gap but shaves past the off stump

End of over 7 (maiden) Zimbabwe 25/1 (RR: 3.57)
SC Williams    1* (8b)      Sohail Tanvir    4-1-8-0
V Sibanda    11* (23b 1x4)      Abdur Rauf    3-0-16-1

7.1

Abdur Rauf to Sibanda, no run, 118.8kmph full delivery, just outside off stump and is left alone

7.2

Abdur Rauf to Sibanda, no run, beaten. Lovely delivery. The conditions are helping. This one landed on a length, just outside the off stump and shaped away late.

7.3

Abdur Rauf to Sibanda, no run, gets this one to move in towards the off stump and is defended on the front foot

7.4

Abdur Rauf to Sibanda, no run, full pitched, outside off stump, pushed to covers.

7.5

Abdur Rauf to Sibanda, 1 run, drifts on to the pads and is turned away to fine leg

Hummum Bhutta is turning these pages into Aunt Agony column. He wonders, "Guys, is it really that bad to get married? I am just 17, living a regular life with high school and homework and I can't WAIT to get married! " Hmm.. stay in school. Don't start lusting yet, boy!

7.6

Abdur Rauf to Williams, no run, defended to the off side

End of over 8 (1 run) Zimbabwe 26/1 (RR: 3.25)
SC Williams    1* (9b)      Abdur Rauf    4-0-17-1
V Sibanda    12* (28b 1x4)      Sohail Tanvir    4-1-8-0

8.1

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, 1 run, on the middle and leg, worked to midwicket and again they take a quick single. Their running between the wicket and the fielding has been pretty sharp. They create opportunities on the field.

8.2

Sohail Tanvir to Williams, 1 run, extra bounce off a good length and a surprised Williams jabs it past gully

8.3

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, no run, beaten. Moves away with the usual Tanvir angle - leaving the right-hand bat- and Sibanda pushes at it

8.4

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, no run, gets behind the line of this one and defends to the off side

8.5

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, no run, testing line outside off stump and Sibanda thinks about driving before shouldering arms

8.6

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, FOUR, short of length, outside off stump and Sibanda plays a neat crispy on-the-up drive through covers. Great to watch and they run really hard again.

End of over 9 (6 runs) Zimbabwe 32/1 (RR: 3.55)
V Sibanda    17* (33b 2x4)      Sohail Tanvir    5-1-14-0
SC Williams    2* (10b)      Abdur Rauf    4-0-17-1

9.1

Abdur Rauf to Williams, no run, full in length, on the off stump line, Williams is late in pushing at it and gets an inside -edge to the leg side

9.2

Abdur Rauf to Williams, no run, fullish and on the legs, flicked straight to square leg. He should have put that one away to the boundary.

Malik comes over to have a chat with Rauf. It could be about the bowling or whether they should get married or not. Who knows!

9.3

Abdur Rauf to Williams, no run, on the off stump line and is driven to the off side

9.4

Abdur Rauf to Williams, no run, slanted across the batsman who lets it go through to the 'keeper

9.5

Abdur Rauf to Williams, 1 run, on the off stump line, pushed to extra cover and they rush across for a single. It is not picked up cleanly by Nasir and they make it easy

9.6

Abdur Rauf to Sibanda, no run, 114.4 kmph - hmm I really don't trust this gun, not that Rauf is bowling express pace but he should be hovering near 130 ... -- on the off stump line, defended to the off side

End of over 10 (1 run) Zimbabwe 33/1 (RR: 3.30)
V Sibanda    17* (34b 2x4)      Abdur Rauf    5-0-18-1

Powerplay 2

10.1

Sohail Tanvir to Williams, 1 run, turned to midwicket where Nasir dives but ends up misfielding.

10.2

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, no run, leans forward to defend a delivery around the off stump

10.3

Sohail Tanvir to Sibanda, 1 run, OUT, Run out by Rizwan from long leg. It was on the pads, clipped past square leg and they tried to push for the second run. Rizwan moved swiftly to his right, swooped and fired in flat and accurate throw. Sarfraz does the rest. Gone!

V Sibanda run out 18 (55m 36b 2x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

10.4

Sohail Tanvir to Taibu, no run, leans forward to defend

Bilal: "Hey, at least you got a wife. I'm up at five in the mornning and have nothing better to do than read pakistan vs zimbabwe commentary. I'll tell ya man, us students have it hard... :) " Girl friend at least? Get out and get a life maan!

10.5

Sohail Tanvir to Taibu, 1 run, short delivery and is pulled away to long-leg. Taibu is in and this should get interesting as he likes to go for his shots. And it was this pair who did quite well in the last game

10.6

Sohail Tanvir to Williams, FOUR, creamed through covers. Fab strike. Full pitched and Williams leaned across to drill it through the off-side field

End of over 11 (7 runs) Zimbabwe 40/2 (RR: 3.63)
SC Williams    8* (17b 1x4)      Sohail Tanvir    6-1-21-0
T Taibu    1* (2b)      Abdur Rauf    5-0-18-1

11.1

Abdur Rauf to Taibu, 2 runs, nicely played. It was full and on the middle, Taibu worked his wrists over time, the bottom-hand took control and he whipped it past square leg.

11.2

Abdur Rauf to Taibu, 1 run, pushed towards mid-on and they take the quick run. Had the throw hit the striker's end, he would have been found short. Didn't miss by much, though.

Faras Ghani, our man at the ground, had this strange experience: "There was an aunty in the press box at Faisalabad cricket stadium. It was her 18th wedding anniversary on match day. Warned me not to get married ever!"

11.3

Abdur Rauf to Williams, no run, overpitched delivery again and is driven but straight to mid-off

11.4

Abdur Rauf to Williams, no run, short and rising, Williams tries to upper cut it but can't connect

11.5

Abdur Rauf to Williams, no run

11.6

Abdur Rauf to Williams, 1 no ball, slightly slower one, full and outside off, square driven to right of backward point where Fawad Alam pulls off a fine stop. Another no-ball, though. Free hit coming up.

11.6

Abdur Rauf to Williams, no run, again they don't take full toll of the free hit. He moved outside leg and went for a slog but Rauf pitched it short and the ball bounced over the flashing blade

End of over 12 (4 runs) Zimbabwe 44/2 (RR: 3.66)
SC Williams    8* (22b 1x4)      Abdur Rauf    6-0-22-1
T Taibu    4* (4b)      Sohail Tanvir    6-1-21-0

12.1

Sohail Tanvir to Taibu, 1 run, full and straight, pushed past the bowler

Hummam again: "All this marriage talk has made me wanting a hot warm big crispy chicken sandwich..." Whoa! I was beginning to get worried .. till I read it was chicken. till then, the lines were dangerously loaded!

12.2

Sohail Tanvir to Williams, no run, leans forward to push to covers

12.3

Sohail Tanvir to Williams, 1 bye, in the zone outside off stump and is left alone

12.4

Sohail Tanvir to Taibu, 1 wide, outside off stump, has a flash and a miss.

Dr Satendra Singh: "Right from 1987 I'm following Zim ckt fanatically & CricInfo is my most trusted partner ever. Even in the middle of stormy Ind-Aust test series my eyes were always on Mobilink 2008. You are dead correct and your fellow colleague absolutely wrong. A Zim fanatic doctor during his hospital hours is totally engrossed in what you are writing from Zim's favourite ground in Pak."

12.4

Sohail Tanvir to Taibu, no run, pushed outside off again and Taibu lets this one go past him

12.5

Sohail Tanvir to Taibu, no run, on the middle and leg, wristed to square leg for a single

12.6

Sohail Tanvir to Taibu, 1 run, placed to right of mid-on

Faras Ghani from the ground: "Disappointing crowd yet again, carrying on the trend this entire series (bar Faisalabad). Maybe its the cold. Sitting in the open-air pressbox, i'm craving for my bed that is over a 1000km away!" But the kill-joy that he is, doesn't mention whether its an empty bed waiting for him?!

End of over 13 (4 runs) Zimbabwe 48/2 (RR: 3.69)
T Taibu    6* (8b)      Sohail Tanvir    7-1-24-0

13.1

Wahab Riaz to Taibu, no run, full pitched, on the off stump, Taibu wants to drive it down the ground but gets an inside-edge to square leg

13.2

Wahab Riaz to Taibu, no run, short and wide, slapped but can't beat the cover fielder

13.3

Wahab Riaz to Taibu, OUT, Wow! Stunning catch at covers. That man Rizwan again. It was poor delivery - short and wide- and Taibu slashed it in the air but Rizwan took off in the air, left hand outstretched and was parallel to the ground when he took it. Watch it in the Youtube. Coming soon, in a computer near you

13.4

Wahab Riaz to Taylor, no run, on the middle stump line, inside-edge to the leg side

As we know Faras likes to be a kill-joy. "A response to Dr Satenda Singh: Even though Zimbabwe won an ODI here 10 years ago, it surely cant be labelled their favourite ground. A certain Wasim Akram scored 257* against these men in 1996." Saw that asterisk too? Uff! He wants to rub it in! And he is not done, the sod, he adds, "Even Saqlain managed a 79 against them in that very match."

13.5

Wahab Riaz to Taylor, no run, on the stumps, played to the on side

13.6

Wahab Riaz to Taylor, no run, beaten on the cut. It was short and deserved that shot but he couldn't execute it properly

Farrukh Hanif Awan: "How come Pakistan has started to produce bowlers of limping pace. Where have all the good old days of fiery pace bowlers gone? Shaun Tait goes into semi retirement, Shoaib Akhter has lost his head (again & again) and shane bond has been kicked out. Its just sad! i wish they had cloned Waqar younis and Wasim for the future!"

14.5

Shoaib Malik to Williams, no run, big responsibility now on Williams and he leans forward to defend

14.6

Shoaib Malik to Williams, 1 wide, drifts down the leg side

Faras: "Not sure what Pakistan team had for breakfast this morning judging by the excellent fielding on display; two stunning catches, a runout, brilliant stops. What is the world coming to!"

14.6

Shoaib Malik to Williams, no run, Flighted delivery and Williams goes for a slog sweep and misses. Sarfraz whips the bails off in a flash and appeals. It is referred upstairs. The back foot was on the line - the line belongs to the umpire which means that can be given out - but probably just before the bails came off, a part of the foot was dragged inside. The third umpire offers the benefit of doubt to the batsman. But there is certainly something in that breakfast. An enquiry committee needs to be set up!

End of over 15 (1 run) Zimbabwe 49/3 (RR: 3.26)

15.1

Wahab Riaz to Taylor, 1 run, on the stumps, jabbed to the off side

15.2

Wahab Riaz to Williams, no run, surprise bouncer from the mediumpacer Riaz and Williams is stunned but recovered well to fend it off to gully. He took the bottom-hand off the handle as he arched back and though he took the eyes off the ball, the soft hands meant the ball didn't travel to waiting palms

15.3

Wahab Riaz to Williams, 1 run, played with soft hands again - tapped close on the off side and they pick up a single

15.4

Wahab Riaz to Taylor, 1 run, full and outside off, dabbed away to third man for a single

15.5

Wahab Riaz to Williams, no run, on the off stump line, steered to point

15.6

Wahab Riaz to Williams, FOUR, punched through cover point. Short of length and Williams forced it on the up through the off side. He takes a leg-stump guard, a bottom-hand grip and keeps his bat raised a touch in the air.

Shoaib Malik to Taylor, 1 run, flighted delivery on the off stump line, wristed to square leg for a single

16.2

Shoaib Malik to Williams, no run, tossed up nicely, slow loopy delivery and Williams has to check his drive and pushes it back to the bowler

16.3

Shoaib Malik to Williams, no run, leans forward to defend

16.4

Shoaib Malik to Williams, no run, he is bowling from round the stumps to Williams. This one comes in with the arm and Williams goes back to punch it to the off side

16.5

Shoaib Malik to Williams, FOUR, edged away to third man boundary. It was a nice flighted off break and Williams pushed inside the line and got an outside edge. No one in slip, nor silly point. Now then, Why?

16.6

Shoaib Malik to Williams, 1 run, stops on the batsman who does well to adjust and roll his wrists over it and send it down towards mid-on region albeit uppishly

End of over 17 (6 runs) Zimbabwe 62/3 (RR: 3.64)

It is getting pretty dark out there

17.1

Wahab Riaz to Williams, no run, 137.1 kmph delivery - in the zone outside off, Williams has a slash and a miss

17.2

Wahab Riaz to Williams, 1 run, makes contact with his punchy drive and gets it down to man at deep cover

17.3

Wahab Riaz to Taylor, 1 run

The young seam attack - Rauf and Riaz - picked up five while the spinners led by Malik did the rest to bowl out Zimbabwe for 183. A cloud cover enveloped the stadium and it initially assisted seam bowling before the damp conditions helped the spinners later. Taylor resisted with a fifty and was involved in a 85-run partnership with Chigumbura but it was not enough to stop Pakistan. Join us in a while for the chase.
