ESPNcricinfo staff

Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited 283 (Misbah 85, Waqas 83, Fahad 5-67) and 182 (Umar 76, Gul 6-67) beat Habib Bank Limited 137 (Shehzad 79, Hafeez 4-16) and 253 (Hafeez 3-62) by 75 runs

Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited lifted the inaugural President's Trophy, beating Habib Bank Limited by 75 in Karachi. When HBL resumed the day at 169 for 6, they had to score another 160 to lay their hands on the title. SNGPL's spinners took three of the last four wickets, led by Mohammad Hafeez who scalped two on the last day, taking just over 24 overs to wrap up the innings.

Chasing 329 was going to be a daunting task after HBL were dismissed for 137 in the first innings. Ahmed Shehzad was the only batsman to provide resistance with a half-century while the other ten players scored only 57 runs combined. Hafeez took four wickets in the first innings in less than 14 overs, giving away only 16 runs. That gave SNGPL a first-innings lead of 146 as they had scored 283 after they were put in to bat. Even though they were in trouble at 49 for 3, they were rescued by Azhar Ali (32) and half-centuries from Misbah-ul-Haq and Ali Waqas.

When they came out to bat again, Umar Gul not only got rid of the openers, he dismissed their first-innings top scorers - Misbah and Waqas - for ducks. His six wickets, which included a hat-trick, kept SNGPL to 182 but the lead by then had already reached to 328.

I have failed to understand as to why Pakistan has not been able to find quality batsmen from the first class cricket. In the older days when we used to have departmental cricket teams like PIA, HBL, NBP, UBL etc; we had lot of quality batsmen, there was absolutely no dearth of good batsmen but now when Regional tams are playing, we dont see any one comparable to Miandad, Zaheer, Inzimam, Yousaf not even Yonis's calibre. Similar is the case of WK, after Rashid Latif, no quality keeper. Kamran Akmal, in my opinion, is the worst keeper that Pakistan has ever produced. He is the only player who is single handedly responsible for defeats in Tests & One Day matches, Sydney Test and the world cup match against NZ is prime example but still he continues to play because we do not have good keeper/batsman. After Abdul Razzaq's exist, All rounder's spot is also vacant. Selection committee should also find a suitable all rounder for the team.

Everyone knows that Fawad Alam deserves a chance at some point (and a proper chance, not like in SL where he got 2 tests and was kicked out, even though he made a hundred), yet failures like Faisal Iqbal and Imran Farhat continue to be picked. And you don't go to South Africa with only 4 seamers. At least one, if not more from Sadaf Hussain, Aizaz Cheema and Anwar Ali should have been picked for the tour.

On a side note, I hope Sarfraz does well. If he doesn't, can we please somehow unearth some non-Akmal wicketkeeper who can actually do a decent job with the bat, and a good job with the gloves? Pakistan has always lacked someone of this quality; those that are good keepers aren't good batsmen, and vice versa. With our batting line-up, we need a decent batsmen at 7. Is it really so hard to find a Sangakkara, a Gilchrist or a Dhoni, or even a Prior? Ok, ok, just kidding. But seriously, a decent batsman, & a good keeper is required. Hopefully, Sarfraz will be a good long-term option.

Well done Misbah & co. Misbah is rally a terrific player. He deserve to be captain of Pakistan just because of his great domestic and international performance as batsman and captain. I am not agree with the selection committee. SNGPL who won the final without loosing a match had no fast bowler in the pak team. Is Asad Ali (35), Sami Niazi (48 wkts), number 4 among top 10, do not deserve position in Pak team. I think they deserve the fifth bowler position for SA tour.

@Syed_imran_abbas: You are absolute right, There is no place for Fisal Iqbal as he have already been tested in several occasion in the national side. Fadal Alam should be given a chance as per the experience is concern.I thank rest of the selection is OK but the Fisal Iqbal. Gul retail his place because his experience. Sadaf Hussain could be his replacement in future.

    Dear MSQ3761,

Pakistan first class cricket is divided into two premier tournaments. Regional format is followed in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy (Pakistan National Championship). The PCB - Patron's Trophy which this got renamed to President's Trophy this year, follows the departmental format.

    Hope that answers your query.

Well done misbah and co. Clearly umar akmal should have been in side for Fisal Iqbal in SA test series team + anwar ali. Rest of team selection is very good though i am not sure if umer gul is worth spending time on as he couldnt develop anything after playing so many years of international cricket. I think selectors should consider his replacements. They should look towards Junaid, Irfan, Ehsan Adil, Anwar ali, and wahab riaz for pace departments in future.

Way to go Misbah! You have established yourself as the best captain in Pakistan :)

SNGPL vs Habib Bank. Do the fans care? Absolutely not. If any team loses, would any fan be angry? No one. Why can't these matches be between cities or even provinces so that our players can play under some real pressure? It does not take a genius to figure that out...
