In 15 season at Derbyshire Ian Buxton played 350 first-class matches making 11,803 runs at 23.94 as a middle-order batsman. He also captured 483 first-class wickets at 26.38, including 12 five-wicket hauls, with his medium-pace bowling. One of the highlights of his career was when he took 11 wickets in a day to inflict a defeat on Worcestershire in 1968. He was county captain between 1970 and 1972. Buxton was one of the last of those who was able to play professional football as well as cricket, enjoying spells with Derby County, Luton Town and Notts County before joining Port Vale in 1969 and was a regular throughout the rest of the club's 1969-70 Fourth Division promotion-winning campaign. The club paid the £500 registration fee to sign him permanently, in the knowledge that his cricket commitments meant he would miss the last four games anyway.
