Hello and welcome to coverage of the first Test between India and South Africa at Johannesburg

I'm Anand Vasu, and along with Sajan Nair, will be calling the action today

India have not won a Test match in South Africa in numerous attempts and after the pounding they received in the one-dayers it's going to be tough going in the Tests

There's cricket happening all over the world with the Ashes heating up in Perth and Kumar Sangakkara plughing a lone furrow against New Zealand at Wellington. But if India is your team, then this is where all the action is. St back and relax, for we'll bring you all the action as it happens, live, ball-by-ball, right here.

Micky Arthur, the South African coach, has already spoken about unleashing a pace battery on the Indians

Apparently the overnight rain has left some damp patches on the pitch and it's wearing a bit of a speckled look ahead of the start

Early news coming in is that the pitch was not covered adequately and there are some damp spots on it. The groundstaff are working hard to dry out these starts.

This has meant that there is a delay in the start of play. However, we still have no official word on how much the start is delayed by.

At the moment we can only tell you that the umpires - Mark Benson and Daryl Harper - will inspect the conditions at 10.30am local time, the scheduled start. That is 0830 GMT.

Apparently the damp spots have not been caused by rain. The groundsman had put some damp hessian on the pitch, under the covers, to keep it from cracking up.

As a result of excessive sweating the damp spots developed. When asked about the start the groundsman said, "I believe the umpires won't start play until there is an even contest between bat and ball."

The umpires are looking at the pitch at the moment. Rahul Dravid, the Indian captain, is also around, taking a look as the groundstaff go about doing their work. There's still no word, however, on when play will begin. We'll keep you updated as and when we get some official news.

0.1

Steyn to Jaffer, no run, Short of a good length, outside the off stump, that is perfectly pitched, bounces a bit and carries well to the wicketkeeper, Jaffer leaves it well alone

0.2

Steyn to Jaffer, no run, fullish and outside the off stump, the ball moves away a bit after pitching, Jaffer is very watchful but leaves the ball well alone once more to the keeper

0.3

Steyn to Jaffer, no run, This one is not well directed. A bit of pace on it but the ball spears down the leg side and is left well alone to the keeper

Three slips and two gullies in place

0.4

Steyn to Jaffer, no run, Normal service resumes. Short of a length, outside the off, quick, moving away after pitching. Jafffer shoulders arms and leaves the ball alone to the keeper

0.5

Steyn to Jaffer, no run, short of a length once more - you're not going to see too many full deliveries early on - and a touch too wide outside the off, left alone to the keeper

0.6

Steyn to Jaffer, no run, The last ball of a good first over from Steyn is pushed through a bit fuller, it's also on the stumps and forced Jaffer to play a shot. He does well, punching the ball to mid-off with a straight bat

End of over 1 (maiden) India 0/0
W Jaffer    0* (6b)      DW Steyn    1-1-0-0
V Sehwag    0* (0b)

1.1

Ntini to Sehwag, no run, Makhaya Ntini starts with one outside the off that Sehwag leaves well alone

2.1

Steyn to Jaffer, no run, short of a good length, outside the off stump, a but of away movement, left well alone to the keeper

2.2

Steyn to Jaffer, no run, once again Steyn is bang on target. The ball is outside the off, just short of a driving length, moving away. Jaffer is patient and lets the ball go through to the keeper

2.3

Steyn to Jaffer, no run, and again, good line and length, perhaps just a touch too wide, moving away after pitching, too short to come on the front foot, left alone to the keeper

2.4

Steyn to Jaffer, no run, There's the first bouncer. Banged in really short. The ball bounces a lot - too much in fact - and Jaffer easily ducks and lets it go

2.5

Steyn to Jaffer, no run, outside the off, short of a length, shaping away, once again Jaffer leaves the ball alone quite easily

2.6

Steyn to Jaffer, no run, and an exact replica of the previous ball to finish the over, once again Jaffer watches the ball carefully and leaves it alone. Steyn is playing on the patience of Jaffer here, but it is Sehwag who is more likely to take the bait

End of over 3 (maiden) India 0/0
W Jaffer    0* (12b)      DW Steyn    2-2-0-0
V Sehwag    0* (6b)      M Ntini    1-1-0-0

3.2

Ntini to Sehwag, no run, once again shortish and angling in to Sehwag who straddles the crease and defends the ball away to off

3.3

Ntini to Sehwag, 1 run, And the first run for India! The ball is slightly fuller and this lets Sehwag push it just wide of cover for a single

3.4

Ntini to Jaffer, no run, short of a length and outside the off stump, Jaffer plays Ntini for the first time, left well alone to the keeper

3.5

Ntini to Jaffer, no run, short of a good length and on the stumps, Jaffer plays and misses and is rapped on the pad. There's a loud shout from the ever enthusiastic Makhaya Ntini but the ball is going down leg and Mark Benson indicates as much after turning down the appeal

3.6

Ntini to Jaffer, no run, shorter this time and spearing up the rib-cage. Jaffer fends the ball away to the leg side awkwardly

End of over 4 (1 run) India 1/0
W Jaffer    0* (15b)      M Ntini    2-1-1-0
V Sehwag    1* (9b)      DW Steyn    2-2-0-0

4.3

Steyn to Sehwag, no run, quick bouncer banged in! Too short though and the ball is too high, Sehwag easily leaves the ball alone

4.4

Steyn to Sehwag, no run, short and wide, another bouncer, again left alone with ease to the keeper

4.5

Steyn to Sehwag, no run, short and a bit of width and Sehwag takes the bait, trying to uppercut the ball towards third-man, he misses and the ball goes through to the keeper. There's an element of risk in that shot and with Sehwag at the crease you know he's going to go after the ball sooner or later

4.6

Steyn to Sehwag, no run, short of a length and outside the off, this time Sehwag chooses wisely and leaves the ball alone

End of over 5 (1 run) India 2/0
V Sehwag    1* (16b)      DW Steyn    3-2-1-0

V Sehwag    1* (16b)      M Ntini    3-1-6-0

7.1

Ntini to Sehwag, 1 run, short one banged in, it gets a bit big on Sehwag who fends awkwardly to the leg side, Hashim Amla at short leg has half a chance but the ball is wide of him and a single can be scampered

7.2

Ntini to Jaffer, no run, this one is the attempted yorker, very full, quite quick too, Jaffer does well to keep it out, jamming the bat down

7.3

Ntini to Jaffer, no run, just short of a good length and outside the off, left well alone to the keeper, that was close to the stumps but Jaffer watches it well and leaves it be

7.4

Ntini to Jaffer, no run, quick one from Ntini, the ball slants in very close to the stumps, Jaffer leaves it alone to the keeper, again a good leave

7.5

Ntini to Jaffer, no run, full and outside the off, driven well, there's some pace on the ball leaving the bat, but it's straight to the fielder

7.6

Ntini to Jaffer, no run, short of a good length and on the stumps, Jaffer stands tall and defends with soft hands, dropping the ball down to his feet

End of over 8 (1 run) India 8/0

8.2

Pollock to Jaffer, FOUR, short of a good length and outside the off, Jaffer goes after this one and is not totally in control but the ball evades the slip and gully fielders and runs down to the third-man fence

8.3

Pollock to Jaffer, no run, this time the ball is closer to the stumps and Jaffer leaves it well alone to the keeper. He's a patient man Jaffer and there's less than half an hour to lunch

8.4

Pollock to Jaffer, no run, fullish and just outside the off stump, Jaffer pokes at that one and the ball seams away and beats the bat! That is a good ball

8.5

Pollock to Jaffer, no run, full and quite a bit outside the off stump, left alone to the keeper

8.6

Pollock to Jaffer, no run, full and on the stumps, punched back down the pitch but no chance of single there and it's the end of the over

End of over 9 (5 runs) India 13/0
W Jaffer    9* (37b 2x4)      SM Pollock    2-1-5-0
V Sehwag    3* (18b)      M Ntini    4-1-7-0

9.1

Ntini to Sehwag, no run, fullish and on the off, Sehwag drives to the off side but once again cannot beat the fielder and there's no chance of a run

9.2

Ntini to Sehwag, no run, short of a length and slipping down leg, Sehwag walks across his stumps and tries to flick but misses, the ball brushes the thigh-pad and goes to the keeper

9.3

Ntini to Sehwag, 1 run, short of a good length and on the stumps, knocked back past the bowler, there are calls of yes, no, maybe, yes, no and plenty more and somehow the batsmen scamper through for a single as the fielder does not pick the ball up cleanly

9.4

Ntini to Jaffer, no run, full and quite straight, defended back down the pitch with a very straight bat

9.5

Ntini to Jaffer, no run, short of a length and on the stumps, slanting in, Jaffer clips the ball to the leg side and it falls just short of Hashim Amla at forward short-leg

9.6

Ntini to Jaffer, OUT, Gone! full and on the stumps, Jaffer leaves this one alone and it is a big, big mistake. The ball thuds into pad and the appeal is spontaneous and vociferous. Up goes the finger. That was out. And South Africa have picked up their first wicket

W Jaffer lbw b Ntini 9 (42m 40b 2x4 0x6) SR: 22.50

That was an error in judgment from Jaffer and one India can ill afford. After doing the hard work in seeing off the early action with the new ball India really needed Jaffer to go on and make it count

End of over 10 (1 run) India 14/1
     M Ntini    5-1-8-1
V Sehwag    4* (21b)      SM Pollock    2-1-5-0

10.1

10.4

Pollock to Sehwag, no run, short of a good length and outside the off, left alone to the keeper

10.5

Pollock to Sehwag, OUT, And another! Shaun Pollock strikes! This one is short of a length and outside the off, Sehwag does not have the patience of Jaffer and he pokes at the ball. There's just a touch of away movement and this takes the ball away from the middle of the bat. The ball kisses the outside edge and lands safely in Mark Boucher's gloves. Sehwag goes and India are now two down before lunch

V Sehwag c †Boucher b Pollock 4 (46m 26b 0x4 0x6) SR: 15.38

Sachin Tendulkar now joins Rahul Dravid out in the middle

Tendulkar takes his time marking his guard and getting well settled before facing Pollock. He checks out the field - three slips and a gully in place

10.6

Pollock to Tendulkar, 1 leg bye, full and on the stumps, just angling down the leg side, Tendulkar looks to work the ball away to the leg side but misses, he's hit on the pad and there's an appeal for the lbw, turned down and leg-bye is the signal

End of over 11 (1 run, wicket maiden) India 15/2
SR Tendulkar    0* (1b)      SM Pollock    3-2-5-1
R Dravid    0* (0b)      M Ntini    5-1-8-1

11.1

Ntini to Tendulkar, no run, short of a length and outside the off stump, the ball pitches and moves away from Tendulkar who leaves the ball alone to the keeper. That was too wide to tempt Tendulkar into a shot so early in his innings

11.2

Ntini to Tendulkar, no run, short of a good length and on the off, angling in the stumps, Tendulkar is beaten for pace and the ball crashes into pad. Loud shout for the lbw but turned down. That is very, very close and well worth the shout. Perhaps a touch too high though and the appeal is turned down

11.3

Ntini to Tendulkar, no run, fullish and outside the off, Tendulkar gets quickly onto the front foot and drives to cover but he doesn't quite time the ball too well

11.4

Ntini to Tendulkar, 1 run, this time Tendulkar can work the ball away past the fielder and picks up a single

11.5

Ntini to Dravid, no run, short of a length and just outside the off, Dravid plays tentatively at that one and misses, the ball beats the outside edge and goes to the keeper

11.6

Ntini to Dravid, no run, short of a length once more and outside the off stump, left alone and that brings up the end of the over

End of over 12 (1 run) India 16/2
R Dravid    0* (2b)      M Ntini    6-1-9-1
SR Tendulkar    1* (5b)      SM Pollock    3-2-5-1

12.1

Pollock to Tendulkar, no run, short of a good length and outside the off, Tendulkar is careful and leaves the ball well alone as it goes through to the keeper

12.2

Pollock to Tendulkar, 3 runs, a touch too full and outside the off, Tendulkar gets nicely behind that one and drives past the bowler. That is a good shot. He has not quite given it a thrash so it won't reach the fence but that was played very well

12.3

Pollock to Dravid, no run, short of a driving length and hovering on the off-stump line, Dravid stands tall and defends down to the off side with an angled bat

12.4

Pollock to Dravid, no run, fuller and on the off, Dravid comes forward well and covers the line, defending with the full face of the bat, the ball goes back down the pitch

12.5

Pollock to Dravid, no run, Ouch! That was a nasty one! Short of a good length, on the stumps, this ball jags back very sharply and kicks up as well, Dravid shoulders arms as the ball slams into Dravid's ribs. That would have hurt plenty, but Dravid takes the blow like a man

12.6

Pollock to Dravid, no run, short of a length and outside the off, Dravid leaves this one safely alone to the keeper

End of over 13 (3 runs) India 19/2
R Dravid    0* (6b)      SM Pollock    4-2-8-1
SR Tendulkar    4* (7b)      M Ntini    6-1-9-1

Dravid will be waiting for the lunch break so he can get some treatment. There will be a nasty bruise where he was struck.

13.1

Steyn to Tendulkar, no run, fullish and outside the off stump, Tendulkar leaves the ball alone, this one keeps a touch low

13.2

Steyn to Tendulkar, no run, fuller and on the stumps, Tendulkar gets across and defends to the off side

13.3

Steyn to Tendulkar, no run, That one takes off from a length, that is a pacy ball from Steyn! Tendulkar is very careful as he leaves the ball alone to the keeper

13.4

Steyn to Tendulkar, no run, good-length ball just outside the off, Tendulkar comes forward in defence but the ball takes the edge and squirts down to gully

13.5

Steyn to Tendulkar, no run, short of a length and outside the off, shaping away just a touch, Tendulkar half plays at it and the ball goes past the edge to the keeper

13.6

Steyn to Tendulkar, no run, full, fast, outside the off, Tendulkar shoulders arms once more and lets the ball go through to the keeper

And that is lunch! South Africa will have enjoyed that session. They've got two wickets cheaply and both openers are back in the dressing-room. India, on the other hand, have their work cut out for them

There will be a 40-minute break for lunch. Play will resume at 13.40 local time, 11.40 GMT.

When play resumes it will be Sajan Nair bringing you the commentary for the first hour. This is Anand Vasu signing off for the moment.

End of over 14 (maiden) India 19/2
SR Tendulkar    4* (13b)      DW Steyn    4-3-1-0
R Dravid    0* (6b)      SM Pollock    4-2-8-1

Welcome back. First it was just pace and bounce and it had a devastating effect on the Indian batsmen. Add two-paced to that and I get the feeling that the writing is on the wall. India will need Dravid and Tendulkar to guide them through this tricky stage.

The South African bowlers are hitting the deck hard and making the ball talk. For India it's going to be another session where survival will be of prime importance.

Players are back. It's going to be Pollock to start proceedings after lunch - Dravid on strike.

14.1

Pollock to Dravid, FOUR, Pollock starts off with an over-pitched delviery outside the off stump and Dravid just caresses it through the gap between the cover fielders. Made it look easy

14.2

Pollock to Dravid, no run, good length delivery outside the off stump, defended on the front-foot

14.3

Pollock to Dravid, no run, short of a good length delivery, Pollock back on track after that first ball loosener. Dravid defends it presenting the full face of the bat

14.4

Pollock to Dravid, no run, short of a good length and cutting in, defended on the back-foot

14.6

Pollock to Dravid, no run, short rising delivery, this one hits the deck and nips back in. Dravid stands tall on the back-foot and gets it on the middle of the bat

End of over 15 (4 runs) India 23/2
R Dravid    4* (12b 1x4)      SM Pollock    5-2-12-1
SR Tendulkar    4* (13b)      DW Steyn    4-3-1-0

15.1

Steyn to Tendulkar, 2 runs, short of a good length delivery on the middle and off stump line, Tendulkar hops into position and nicely works it away behind square on the leg side. Got right on top of the bounce and at the point of impact just wristfully worked it away well wide of the fielder at short leg

15.2

Steyn to Tendulkar, no run, left alone outside the off stump

15.3

Steyn to Tendulkar, FOUR, draws him forward into the drive and the edge goes past the fielder at gully

15.4

Steyn to Tendulkar, no run, played away off the back-foot to the midwicket region

15.5

Steyn to Tendulkar, no run, short of a good length delivery, hint of shape away from the right-hander and Tendulkar watchfully leaves it through to the keeper

15.6

Steyn to Tendulkar, no run, similar length, closer to the stump but just not close enough to make Tendulkar play at it

End of over 16 (6 runs) India 29/2
SR Tendulkar    10* (19b 1x4)      DW Steyn    5-3-7-0
R Dravid    4* (12b 1x4)      SM Pollock    5-2-12-1

16.3

Pollock to Dravid, no run, short of good length delivery, this one shaped away - Dravid not interested

16.4

Pollock to Dravid, no run, and the one that nips back in - no shot offered and the ball sails through to the keeper

16.5

Pollock to Dravid, no run, again left alone outside the off stump, this is just the begining folks - get ready for more of those

16.6

Pollock to Dravid, no run, again left alone outside the off stump

End of over 17 (maiden) India 29/2
R Dravid    4* (18b 1x4)      SM Pollock    6-3-12-1

17.1

Steyn to Tendulkar, no run, drifting in and Tendulkar takes it on the pad

Steyn to Tendulkar, no run, this one swung away a long way but was bit too wide outside the off stump and Tendulkar comfortable leaves it through to the keeper

Steyn to Tendulkar, no run, short of a good length and cutting in. Tendulkar gets behind the line and defends it down on the leg side

17.4

Steyn to Tendulkar, no run, fuller length delivery outside the off stump, watchfully played away towards silly mid-off

The lights are on and the players are back. We have lost 62 minutes in total - Kallis to continue.

Update 16:32 local, 14:32 GMT - Keith Lane, our man at the Wanderers, doing God knows what has this update for us - The covers are still over the main playing playing area and the bowlers run-ups. A light rain is causing the delay, despite the ground being blazed in bright sun light. The rain should not last much longer and there is every possibility of play resuming within the next twenty minutes. With the day scheduled to continue until 18:30 we should be able to complete at least 20 to 25 overs.

Update 1405 GMT, 1605 local time The news from the Wanderers isn't great. A drizzle has begun and the big covers have come on. Obviously there's no chance of play resuming till the drizzle stops. We'll keep up updated with all news as and when it comes in.

A bad start, a seeming recovery and then the loss of the big wicket of Sachin Tendulkar. India not in great shape at the moment. Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman have pulled off some miraculous recoveries in the past. Can they do it again. Just something for all of you to ponder, and perhaps write in about at Match Vox

Tea - Day 1 The two umpires have come together now and are having a chat. There's plenty of lightning about and it is heavily overcast. Perhaps that's what they are discussing. At any event they have a word with Dravid and off go the batsmen. Probably bad light but could well be lightning.

Stay with us. We'll give you the latest updates as to what's happening at the Wanderers as and when news comes in. We're just 10 minutes away from the tea break so it's likely that tea will be taken now.
