James Samuel Haycraft, died in London on March 26, aged 77 years. A prolific scorer for the Stoics, Nondescripts and Pallingswick clubs, he played once for Middlesex against Surrey at the Oval in 1885. Going in first, he was bowled by George Lohmann for 0 and 5. On a drying pitch Middlesex, in their first season under A. J. Webbe, dismissed for 25 and 77, were beaten by an innings and 64 runs. W. (Billy) Williams, still a familiar figure at Lord's, also was making his first appearance for Middlesex and retained his place as wicket-keeper during that summer; but the dismal experience satisfied Haycraft.
