Stuart comes from a prominent cricketing family in Paisley - his father was President of the Scottish Cricket Union in 1995 and his brother won six Scotland caps in the 1980s. Having played for Scotland at Under 16, Under 19 and B XI levels, Stuart won the first of his four Scotland caps against Denamrk in 1995. He is Scottish manager of a freight forwarding company and is a useful golfer when work and cricket permit.
