The New Zealanders would have struggled to take a first-innings lead against Pakistan A in Sharjah had it not been for Corey Anderson's 80. All of their top six batsmen got starts but Anderson was the only one to make it past 30.
Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson, returning from injuries, were dismissed for 11 and 28, reducing the visitors to 103 for 4. Anderson then had a 54-run stand with BJ Watling, who remained unbeaten on 37. Tim Southee clubbed 28 of 18 balls to give his team the lead and they declared at his dismissal, with the score 244 for 8.
Pakistan A had begun the day on 215 for 9 and they did not add to their score. Legspinner Ish Sodhi took the final wicket to finish with a five-wicket haul.
Leading by 39, New Zealand received a late boost when Neil Wagner dismissed Pakistan A's top-scorer in the first innings, Shan Masood, for 4 before stumps.
