Pakistan were handed their first concerns on tour in South Africa as seamer Umar Gul was restricted to just three overs on the second day of their warm-up match, against Rest of South Africa at Kimberley, while Inzamam-ul-Haq didn't bat due to a chest infection.

Bob Woolmer played down the seriousness of Gul's problem, calling it a "left ankle niggle" saying the restriction in his workload was purely a precaution. However, with this being the only warm-up match before the first Test, Gul will be short on practice should he be selected at Centurion Park.

Similar can be said of Inzamam, but Woolmer hoped his captain would be well enough to play a part on the final day. "Because he wasn't feeling well, it was decided it would not be sensible for him to go out and bat in the hot sun," he said. "But he will probably be able to bat if we get a second knock tomorrow [Monday]."

After a near-perfect opening day, where Mohammad Hafeez and Imran Farhat scored centuries in a score of 401 for 3, the second day proved a tougher test. Albie Morkel, brother of recent Test debutant Morne, ran through the Pakistani middle and lower order to claim 5 for 113.

Hafeez's impressive match continued as his two wickets, along with a brace for Shahid Nazir, reduced Rest of South Africa to 84 for 4. However, the bowlers were then made to work hard by an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 136 between Morne van Wyk, the captain, and Arno Jacobs.

The pair batted for almost 40 overs to carry their side through to the close on 220 for 4. With the Pakistanis likely to want another bat before the Test this match is heading for a final day draw.
