  • It is assumed that R May and Wood of Surrey played for England, rather than T May and Wood of Kent. Hampshire had Stevens as a given man.
  • Dismissal details are not available.
  • This was the first 'great' match played after the adoption of a new code of laws in February 1774. In contrast to the earlier code of 1744, which had provided for choice of innings to be decided by a toss, the 1774 code gave the choice to the visiting team, although a toss might still be used in rare cases such as a match at a neutral venue. The toss was restored early in the 19th century: probably around 1810, although the exact date is uncertain.
  • RM gives dates as 22, 23 June only: also England (1) byes 0, total 116; Hants (1) Francis 49, total 327; margin innings & 78. These are numerically large departures from the Epps version as given above, which is confirmed by several newspapers. SB incorrectly gives the venue as Laleham Burway.
