low full toss, toe-ended to short midwicket! Brave win by four!
Brave vs Fire, 21st Match at Cardiff, Men's Hundred, Aug 20 2025 - Match Result
5.57pm: That's your lot from Cardiff, with Brave winning two tight ones. But Andrew Miller is back from holiday and raring to go for tonight's game at Lord's. See you soon.
Hilton Cartwright is player of the match after belting five sixes to get the Brave to 129. "The crowd got a bloody good game," he says. "I basically just took the game on, and it paid off - thankfully. [Bowlers?] We had a couple of guys who came into the side, and CJ bowled beautifully. The bowlers did an outstanding job."
Jane: "Different run rates of the lower middle order were the difference there. Saif and TKC could only chug along at a run a ball, whereas Cartwright blasted 51 from 19"
5.53pm: How have Welsh Fire messed this one up? They had the Brave 71 for 5 after 71 balls before Hilton Cartwright got going at the death, and were 45 for 1 off 20 balls chasing 130. But none of their batters could leave a lasting mark on the game, with TKC's 25 the top score, and some superb bowling from Archer, Jordan and Coles kept Brave in it. They sneak home, and stay firmly in the mix for the play-offs. The Fire's hopes are all but over.
Matt Henry finished with 2 for 5 from his 20 balls earlier today. Can he make himself a hero with the bat, and hit the last ball for six? Long-on and long-off are both back on the rope. Scoop time?
6 off 1 is the equation. Brave lost to a last-ball six against the Superchargers this time last week. Jordan's groin is causing him some discomfort. Overton and Vince are back over to him for another discussion.
full outside off, Payne jumps across looking to scoop but can only inside-edge towards square leg
7 off 2. Overton and Vince wander over to Jordan for another conflab. Fine leg and short man are both up in the circle.
Jay: "What the hell? I tuned out and Fire were 42 for 1, and Smith looked like he'd knock off the remaining runs himself. Now they're 8 down and about to lose????" -- It's been a great fightback.
full and straight, bludgeoned down to long-on and Overton ensures they can't sneak back for two
8 off 3. Where is the boundary coming from? Vince wanders over for a chat with Jordan.
full outside off, driven straight to Roy at extra cover. Slight misfield, but they won't come back. He got a good chunk of that, but couldn't pierce the infield
9 off 4. What have you got for us, David Payne?
width outside off, flashed hard away behind square. Du Plooy at deep point does well, scrambling across to his left to cut it off, and Topley runs back from short third to fling the ball in
Jordan will close things out for the Brave. 12 off 5 is the equation. Two men out on either side.
Pete: "It's a take of two keepers for SB. Specialist keeper for the ladies, total part time for the men."
charges down, Coles spears in a wide yorker as Payne gives the charge. Evans can't gather to complete a difficult stumping chance, and it deflects to short third
13 off 6.
miscued to wide mid-on, where Vince fields on the bounce
width outside off, cut straight to Jordan at short cover on the bounce
Matt Henry at No. 10. 14 off 8. A boundary changes things!
picks out Cartwright in the deep! The Brave live to fight another day, and the Fire's season is swirling down the drain. TKC steps outside leg, looking to give himself room, but Coles follows him with a full, flat and fast delivery. TKC swings hard but doesn't get enough on it, and Cartwright is 10 yards in off the rope at midwicket to swallow it!
14 off 9. There's a mini-conference going on between the Brave's fielders.
Brave have missed the cut-off, by the way, so there are five men up inside the ring.
speared into the pads, leading edge skews into the covers but they sneak through for one
hung wide outside off, left alone. Too wide!
Coles. 16 off 10.
inside-edged into the pad, dribbles back down the pitch
vicious 90mph short ball, which Payne flaps at. It clangs off Evans' gloves, and allows them through. Archer was celebrating, then yelled at Evans... given as runs, and Ultra-Edge confirms it flicked Payne's glove! Goes down as a drop, and a pretty bad one
pinpoint yorker in the channel outside off, 89mph, sneaks past the bottom of the bat
back of a length, thumped out to deep point on the bounce... and they race back for the second. TKC clearly has faith in Payne's batting
19 off 14. Payne needs to get TKC back on strike ASAP.
clears the front leg, cuts the slower ball out to deep backward point. TKC can't race back for two
Archer to bowl his final five balls
steps outside leg stump, Jordan goes wide outside off and TKC can't reach it on the cut
looks to muscle a pull into the leg side, but can only skew it back via the bottom edge
steps outside leg stump to create some room, but Jordan follows him. Dabs straight to short third on the bounce
sprayed down the leg side, beats everybody! 88mph, full and angling past the pads. Beats the attempted flick, and beats Evans' full-stretch dive!
