full on the pads, whipped away towards deep square leg for a single, Deccan ease to victory
Chargers vs CSK, 5th match at Chennai, IPL, Mar 14 2010 - Match Result
Those early blows cost Chennai the game, and by the time Dhoni and Morkel came together, the task, though not beyond them, was way too stiff. Chennai begin their IPL campaign with a defeat, Deccan have made amends to their loss in the opening game. Symonds, with a half-century and two wickets, is the most likely Man of the Match. Thanks for sending us your feedback. It was a pleasure bringing you the coverage, and join us again tomorrow. Until then, on behalf of everyone at Cricinfo, this is Sid Talya signing off. Adios!
Ohh, P.S - some post-match quotes. Vaas was the Man of the Match, for that fantastic opening spell, and not Symmo.
Dhoni: "In a Twenty20 game, you think you can get 190-odd runs. We haven't really played much T20 before this, but we could have done better. A bit disappointed, and the guys diverted from their roles a bit. But this is just the start of the tournament. Even 20 runs make a lot of difference in this format, we could have restricted them to 170. We are doing well in the practice sessions, but we don't seem to be bowling yorkers when it comes to the game. Tyagi was doing well in the nets, and I thought he might get the yorkers right at the death with a bit of reverse swing."
Gilchrist: "Fantastic all-round performance. It's great to get some momentum going and some big runs on the board. It's a big win for us. The wealth of experience they have, they took their time. Once Symonds pulls the trigger, he finds his groove. They showed their maturity and smarts at the end of the innings. We're off to Cuttack now, we're the nomads and we don't mind that. Being defending champions doesn't really come into the mindset, given the schedule. You don't have time to think and ponder about the past. Everyone's in the race."
Vaas: "190 is a good score and is easy to defend. We bowled well upfront and took early wickets. I have retired from only Tests, and I have been playing the domestic T20 competition and look forward to doing well in the IPL."
RP follows that one with an excellent yorker, digs it out into the off side
Too late but the fans won't mind, pitched up and, not for the first time, he goes straight, smashing that one over long-on
slower one outside off, reaches for it, misses, given a wide
crashed hard, full on the off, makes room and thwacks that past long-off who didn't have to move much but such was the power involved in that one that he had no chance
pushed towards long-off for a single, wants the second but Morkel sends him back
bowled it on a good length outside off, swung hard but was nowhere near it
gets a single to deep midwicket, just heaved it but mistimed
slower one bowled short outside off, slapped towards wide long-on, just the single
belated release, full on middle, he gets under it and dismisses it into the stands over long-on
slower one bowled short outside off, drops it dead in front of cover
Tyagi gets a single, getting a thick outside edge to short third
Symonds strikes again, Murali, normally a batsman with plenty of spunk, has one of his off days, swinging across the line to a straight one on middle, is struck on the pads and we know the result
eased towards extra cover for a single
Murali joins in
the entertainment ends, bowls it full on the off, makes room and tries to clear extra cover but can't, mistimes it straight to Anirudh
Balaji's deft touches, bends low to that attempted yorker and paddles it past short fine for a boundary
full on leg stump, flicked away just wide of deep midwicket but the fielders have been sharp today, restrict them to just the single
short on middle, too short, ducks under it, too high and it's a wide
struck hard towards long-off for a single, the end is near, or 16 balls away, or three wickets, this game is a done thing
short of a length outside off, tries to cut it hard past point, chops it towards the keeper
Parth: "Someone should tell Nilesh that this is T20 and not test cricket. Rohit was required to go for shots with less than 2 overs left in the innings and Raina just got carried away from the previous shot. Look at Badrinath, he is a good test player but hasnt has much success with the IPL and you cant really judge Raina and Rohit about their patience in test cricket when they really havent play test cricket yet!!"
