Scorecard
Keith Barker and Jeetan Patel each took three wickets as Warwickshire beat Northamptonshire by six wickets in their Friends Life t20 encounter at Wantage Road.
The Bears bowled out a side for less than 100 in a 20-over match for the first time as they skittled the Steelbacks for 96, with Barker taking 3 for 18 and New Zealand spinner Patel 3 for 19. Johan Botha, with 28 off 26 balls, top-scored for the hosts before the visitors comfortably reached their small target with 10 deliveries to spare, with Darren Maddy going past 2,000 T20 runs in the process.
Warwickshire chose to bowl after winning the toss and Rob Newton made just 3 before launching Chris Woakes high into the air to Bears wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose, who took the catch at square leg.
Alex Wakely went cheaply when he chipped Woakes to Barker at mid-on as the Steelbacks posted a paltry 17 for 2 from the batting powerplay. mNorthamptonshire captain Andrew Hall departed when he slashed Barker to Neil Carter at deep fine-leg before Rob White smashed Steffan Piolet straight to Woakes at long-off.
Stephen Peters perished when he mis-timed his attempted drive off Patel and was stumped by Ambrose. James Middlebrook joined the procession when he launched Piolet to Woakes at long-off as it took the Steelbacks until the 15th over to reach 50.
Patel then took two wickets in consecutive balls as Botha smashed him to Warwickshire captain Jim Troughton at midwicket before he trapped David Willey lbw. Barker followed suit in the final over when David Murphy hammered him to Troughton at mid-off before Jack Brooks was caught at long-on by William Porterfield.
Chasing 97, the Bears lost Carter for a duck in the first over when he sliced Hall to Peters, at gully. Ireland international Porterfield was then given a lifeline when he edged Brooks' delivery but was dropped by Murphy.
But Murphy had his man in the eighth over when he stumped Porterfield for 20 as he chased after Middlebrook's delivery. Varun Chopra was then run out for 34 off 38 balls after colliding with Maddy while running a single, with Peters having the easy task of throwing to the wicketkeeper's end from fine leg.
Maddy holed out on 26 by launched Willey to Wakely at long on before Troughton claimed the winning run with a single off Lee Daggett in the 19th over.
