Roderick stands firm amid the plunder

Kent were dismissed inside 91 minutes for 64 and only a Gareth Roderick half-century saved Gloucestershire from similar ignominy as 18 wickets fell on day two of this rain-delayed Specsavers County Championship clash in Canterbury.

When bad light stop played just before 6pm Gloucestershire had mustered 110 for 8 for a slender lead of 46 courtesy of Roderick's top-score of 51 and a vital 42-run stand in tandem with Kieran Noema-Barnett.

Wickets had started to tumble almost as soon as the umpires Neil Bainton and Mike Burns had declared conditions fit for play at 1.10pm when, after the loss of the game's first four sessions, Gloucestershire elected to bowl after an uncontested toss.

Left-arm paceman Matt Taylor revelled in ideal bowling conditions to bag 4 for 20 and Craig Miles 3 for 11 as Kent were shot out inside 18.5 overs.

Kent lost their first six wickets inside 10 overs and, in only his sixth first-class game, 20-year-old Zak Crawley who top-scored for the hosts with a modest 15. The tall-right hander, a product of Tonbridge School, faced 26 balls and hit three of Kent's 10 boundaries before being trapped lbw on the back foot by a Ryan Higgins off-cutter.

Extras, which crept up to 11, were Kent's next highest contributor but at least the hosts took crumbs of comfort from edging past their lowest ever first-class total against Gloucestershire - a paltry 28 scored at Moreton-in-Marsh back in 1888.

Kent had given three debuts to close-season signings Heino Kuhn, Matt Henry and Harry Podmore while Gloucestershire capped new-boys Higgins and Dan Worrall, who bagged two for 20 - the scalps of Kent's South African pairing; Kuhn and Sean Dickson.

Starting their reply at 2.50pm, Gloucestershire lost Benny Howell for a third ball duck, leg before to Matt Henry's third delivery as a Kent player, as the seaming ball continued to dominate the bat.

Visiting skipper Chris Dent also bagged a duck, falling lbw to a Darren Stevens leg-cutter then Henry, the New Zealand paceman, pinned James Bracey full in front for five as the left-hander aimed a leg-side clip to leave the visitors on 24 for three at tea.

Jack Taylor became his side's fourth lbw victim soon after the resumption when he inexplicably jumped across the stumps against Stevens only to miss an extravagant heave toward 'cow corner'.

The procession continued when Graeme van Buuren sliced an attempted forcing shot off Stevens to Kuhn at second slip as Stevens rested after a 10-over stint worth three for 19.

Kent all-rounder Grant Stewart switched ends and, with the first ball of his second spell, ran one away off the seam to have Ryan Higgins well held at third slip.

Gareth Roderick top-edged a pull shot off Henry over the ropes at long leg on his way to a 98-ball 50 with four fours but, with the floodlights on and his side 34 ahead, Kieran Noema-Barnett played outside a Will Gidman off-cutter to go lbw, then Roderick departed in similar fashion to give Harry Podmore his first wicket since joining from Middlesex.
