Maxwell's brutal assault sets records galore

Glenn Maxwell struck his career-best one-day score as Hampshire relished a record-breaking day against Lancashire at Old Trafford in the Royal London Cup

Hampshire 360 for 9 (Maxwell 146, Ervine 64) beat Lancashire 212 (Horton 57, Davies 40) by 148 runs
Scorecard
Glenn Maxwell scored a limited overs career-best 146, his first Hampshire century, to carry the county to a resounding Royal London one-day Cup win over Lancashire at Old Trafford.
The Australian limited-overs international, 25, hammered 22 fours and two sixes in a brutal 96-ball assault, which carried his side to a mammoth 360 for 9, a target Lancashire never looked like hunting down.
Their captain, Paul Horton, top-scored with 57 off 50 balls in 212 all out inside 38 overs, signalling a 148-run win for the visitors. Each member of Hampshire's five-man bowling attack struck twice.
This was a clash between two teams who had lost their opening Group A fixtures on Saturday.
Lancashire, who lost the toss for the second match running, conceded 324 for 7 against Yorkshire here on the same pitch and Hampshire lost at Derbyshire having conceded 340 for 5.
Hampshire's innings saw a number of records fall. It was their highest 50-over total ever, their second best in all List A cricket and the highest total by any team in all List A cricket on this ground. This was also the highest total Lancashire have ever conceded.
Maxwell and third-wicket partner Will Smith (49) shared 179 in 22.2 overs, a Hampshire record for that wicket in List A matches against Lancashire, beating 129 shared between Robin Smith and David Gower at Southampton in 1991.
Maxwell hit a quarter of his balls faced either to or over the boundary fence as he helped advance a score from 57 for 2 in the 11th over following the departures of James Vince and Jimmy Adams.
He went from 50 to 100 in 30 balls to bring up a ton off 75 and when he was caught at short cover off Wayne White with the score at 236 for 3 in the 33rd, he had topped his previous career best by one run.
Sean Ervine also added 64 off 46 balls but he was one of five wickets to fall in the last six overs of the innings in the search for quick runs.
Lancashire were not helped by losing new ball bowler Kabir Ali to a right shoulder injury after he had bowled only three overs and Karl Brown's medium pace was employed for the first time since 2012 in county cricket.
Chris Wood bowled Usman Khawaja and had fellow opener Ashwell Prince caught in the middle of the pitch of a top-edged pull to leave Lancashire 40 for 2 in the seventh of their chase. And that was pretty much that.
Maxwell continued his impressive day with two catches at backward point to help left-arm seamer James Tomlinson get Brown and Steven Croft as the score slipped to 71 for four after 13.
Horton and Jordan Clark (22) added 64 in eleven overs for the fifth wicket to give a sparse home crowd something to cheer but the latter was bowled by left-arm spinner Liam Dawson with 135 on the board in the 24th over.
And when Dawson bowled Horton three balls after he had reached 50, Lancashire were 150 for 6 in the 26th.
It was 186 for eight in the 33rd when White and Stephen Parry fell in quick succession to Danny Briggs and Matt Coles, the latter courtesy of another Maxwell catch at backward point.
Coles had Alex Davies caught at mid-on for 40 in the 35th before Briggs had Ali caught at backward point in the 38th to wrap things up.
