NSW solid, Gale injured on rain-hit day
NSW 3 for 140 (Rohrer 61, Carters 56*) v Queensland
Queensland were hit by Matthew Gale's knee injury on a rain-interrupted opening day against New South Wales in Sydney. Only 44 overs were possible, but Queensland lost Gale early, when the fast bowler hurt his knee on his followthrough during his fourth over. New South Wales progressed to 3 for 140, Ben Rohrer and Ryan Carters hitting half-centuries.
Gale gave Queensland the breakthrough in his second over, bowling Nic Maddinson for 7 but had to leave the field soon after the knee damage. Michael Neser then sent back Scott Henry cheaply but New South Wales settled down after that. Rohrer and Carters were involved in a 115-run third-wicket stand before Rohrer departed in what turned out to be the last over of the day.
It was a mix-up that accounted for Rohrer, who was caught short of his crease after having made 61 off 93 with eight fours. Carters remained unbeaten on a patient 56, with Moises Henriques at the other end.
