Northamptonshire signed Ricardo Vasconcelos as a wicketkeeper batsman in 2018. He was born in Johannesburg and has represented Boland and South Africa Under-19s, but qualified as a non-overseas player as he has a Portuguese passport.

Vasconcelos had scored two centuries and three half-centuries in his first 10 first-class games, by 20, as well as representing a CSA Invitation XI. But he followed the drain of South Africans into county cricket: Kyle Abbott, Rilee Rossouw, Simon Harmer, and Morne Morkel all having made recent moves. He had been obliged to renounce his right to represent South Africa as part of the deal, though such actions are reversible.

Vasconcelos equalled his career-best score of 140 against Middlesex in his first season, but made limited impression in the limited-overs formats.
