Tolly Burnett had a brief and somewhat controversial career with Glamorgan in August 1958. The Welsh club were looking for a captain to replace Wilf Wooller, and Anthony Compton Burnett was given an eight-match trial. The right-hand batsman had led Lancing College in 1941 and won a Blue at Cambridge in 1949. He went into teaching, and played for MCC and Sussex II. Not surprisingly, he found the step into county cricket a huge one, and made only 71 runs at 6.45 for Glamorgan. At the end of the season he returned to teaching science at Eton. His full first-class record was 790 runs at 23.23, with a highest score of 79 not out against Middlesex at Fenner's in 1949. His son, R. J. Compton-Burnett, played for Cambridge in 1981.
