About

Sri Lanka became the eighth side to play Tests in 1982 when they hosted England for the first of six one-off Tests spread over 16 years. How lightly they were taken was evident when England initially offered to grant them only a four-day Test on their return trip in 1984. It wasn't until 1998 that perceptions changed, when Arjuna Ranatunga's side - featuring a rampant Muttiah Muralitharan - hammered the hosts at The Oval. England's first full tour of the island was in 2001, an acrimonious contest marred by poor umpiring which the tourists won 2-1 thanks largely to their "pad or hit" approach against Murali.
