Chandimal to lead SL Board Presidents XI

39

Dinesh Chandimal will captain the Sri Lankan Board President's XI against the touring South Africans on Wednesday, ahead of what may be his first match as ODI captain against South Africa on Saturday. As the vice-captain of the national team, he could be in line to take the reins from Angelo Mathews, who has been suspended from the first two ODIs courtesy an over-rate offence.

Chandimal is Sri Lanka's Twenty20 captain, but his ODI form has been poor in the last 16 months - he has averaged 18.19 and hit only two fifties in 28 matches. He was dropped from the limited-overs sides during the latter part of 2012, though he retained his place in the national squad, and has been granted an extended run in the XI after assuming the vice-captaincy in February. Although he is viewed as a future leader, a promotion to acting captain may not be automatic, in light of recent results.

Both Dimuth Karunaratne, and Angelo Perera, who are in contention for ODI debuts in the series, will also play in the warm-up match, as will Thisara Perera, who was dropped from the national squad for the West Indies tri-series.

South Africa play five ODIs and three Twenty20 internationals during their three-week tour.

President's XI squad: Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Kusal Perera, Dimuth Karunaratne, Mahela Udawatte, Angelo Perera, Sachithra Serasinghe, Chaturanga de Silva, Jehan Mubarak, Thisara Perera, Dhammika Prasad, Vimukthi Perera, Madura Lakmal, Seekkuge Prasanna, Ashan Priyanjan

Did you think Tisara can do difference in that hard pitches to bat?? he will not be last for 10 diliveries even! Those pitches are not flat tracks! nobody can come and slog! he will try to slog to leg side and will gave a catch and get out! Thisara please you are a kind of player we looked for long time! please come back with good batting techniques! forward defece and cover drive, cut like shots

surely sl win series by 4-1 or 3-2 but clean sweep they wont do it

  • play2get on July 17, 2013, 3:39 GMT

Thisara is a frustrating player to watch. Loads of talent but very little utilization of it. He was dropped primarily due to lack of form stemming from poor shot selection. He's better than the simple brute that he has been portrayed as, but teams heave become wise to his preferred method of destroying over pitched balls straight down the ground. He has to evolve and make meaningful contributions to the team. Hitting the odd 20 here and there is not a meaningful contribution. In Dilshans absence an extended run as an opener for Kushal would be ideal, pairing him with Karunratne would give something for the selectors to evaluate. Upul tharanga is a solid player who was essentially cast aside but I think his time has passed if SL is to build towards the next world cup. If Chandimal continues to strugle, it's time for him to go as well. He has played almost 60 ODI's wih a 30 average and only 2 centuries, that doesn't cut it for someone hoping to play at 3 or 4.

Thissara would definitely have made the defference if he had played in the TRi series. I do not understand why he wasn't picked. I think he should play in all formats of the game. So far Chandimal, Kushal, and Jeevan Mendis have not earned their inclusion in the team.

  • on July 17, 2013, 2:54 GMT

Kithruwan Withanage and Akila Dhananjaya are playing for under 23 SL cricket tournament. I don't agree with Chandimal's selection as a vice captain to SL team. He has failed many times when we compared to other top players in the side. He is getting too much favours to be in one of the best team in the world. Politics works in SL as usual........

What Happened to well experience talented all-rounder F. Maharoof . Selection committee, asses his performance in past one year domestic. Its a Shame this committee also try to bring Mubarak,Media player Rabukwella, may be Kapu in near future. What is the power behind this? pl think of Sri lankan cricket rather than favours.

I think Suranga should play if Kulasekara not playing. Akila need more match practice too. Everyone knows Mubarak n prasad s days r over but selectors. prasad will play 1 -2 match n then hv to stay out of the game for another6-12 months for his injuries. n Last chances for Chandimal n Kushal too. They need to know where they batting and whats their job if selected to 1st 11. without knowing it there's no point of playing them as there more new talent to test.

i think this team will play today..:P 1.Kusal Perera,2. Dimuth Karunaratne,3. Dinesh Chandimal (capt), 4. Angelo Perera, 5. Sachithra Serasinghe, 6. Jehan Mubarak 7. Chaturanga de Silva, 8. Thisara Perera, 9. Dhammika Prasad, 10. Seekkuge Prasanna 11. Vimukthi Perera

  • on July 16, 2013, 22:53 GMT

If Thisara Perera had played in the tri series, it would have been a different result. SL selectors goofed-up pretty badly by dropping Thisara who could bowl a few overs and get a handy few runs.... much better than our 'middle order'......

  • on July 16, 2013, 22:10 GMT

    what happened to Akila Dhananjaya???

  • SamWintson92 on July 16, 2013, 21:59 GMT

    a) I want to see Thishara Perera in SL team. He's an extra-ordinary player. He was axed for no reason. Remember his contribution in WC 2011 final ? b) Where is Akila Dananjaya ? Exception talent. He also should make SL side c) Jehan Mubarak failed in international arena. SL should move on from him & select a potential young player.

Well I think our team is going through some difficulties nowadays, but still making a win here and there. for me it feels like Ranathunga and the team in the 90s. It was similar what seems to happen today. The only thing was went right at that time was that The selectors went on with one captain for some time. Even we were loosing badly home and away in ODI and test matches as well. But in the end it did help as team and a good captain with a better understanding with the team mates. Eventually became not only the world cup but start winning test matches home and away. I do not understand why we h Anjelo is captaining the ODI and Chandi doing the rest. while Anjelo been in the team in tests and T20I.....so I guess the best thing to do is Anjelo taking over all formats , and he is improving as a captain while he is a better player while been a captain...at least for a year the selectors should do this.

  • Karnain on July 16, 2013, 17:33 GMT

Why Akila Dhananjaya, Kithruwan Vithanage and Suranga Lakmal not selected for Presidents XI? (Lakmal might be in the ODI squad). Nice to see Sachithra Serasinghe and not to see Ramith Rambukwella. But why Jehan Mubarak again?

  • ADARSH100 on July 16, 2013, 17:20 GMT

Noooo.. It is acceptable if Chandimal is the captain of SL Board Presidents XI but I guess he should be axed from the Srilankan playing 11. He should never be made as the captain of Srilanka in the absence of Mathews. Either Mahela or Sangakkara should be the captain. Srilanka is doing foolishness nowadays. They are overlooking to the 2015 World Cup and end up losing in the series and other matches. Do little things correct and the bigger wil come on its way. Try to win all the matches ahead rather than thinking about the future. Build confidence in the team and then have a stable playing XI rather than mixing up players, batting lineup and captains. Its utter foolishness.

wat happen to fervees maharoof. he is a good batsman as well. he is performed well with the bat in the recent. in current sl team he shold be a good no 7 or 8 batsman.also he is a very good bowler than thisara perera

  • on July 16, 2013, 16:40 GMT

Most people has forgotten the past .Chandimal was the anchor of the first test win in South African soil for Sri Lanka . Worth he has given chance .

  • nutral_sl on July 16, 2013, 16:32 GMT

We agree that no one can expect from a player to score a 50 or a 100 every time they come to the crease. But observing the way Chandimal has being batting during the past 06-09 months I am not sure if he is playing a mature inning, but remind me of 'school cricket'. To hold the team together as a national captain... hmm...mmm..m.m..., isn't that too early? Kusal also is missing the 'vision'. Hope one day SL can produce cricketers with the caliber and character of Sanga, Mahela, Arjuna, Mahana etc.....

  • Poholiyadda on July 16, 2013, 15:40 GMT

  • Dhakshika on July 16, 2013, 15:04 GMT

Unble to belive why there is no place for kapugedara.media said two paractise matches at 14 & 15 th.but haven,t heard any result.so any one know about that result.Chandi should not be in the team way he bats in the WI.still sri lnaka missing a palyaer who can hit the ball heard.i dont think thri,& chandi can do it reguraley.so i still stronly belive kapu rediscover his natural talent and play long term for sri lanka.

  • on July 16, 2013, 14:59 GMT

amazing Jayasuriya has missed the minister's son - Ramith o^O im sure if not for that plan incident which could have "distracted" him a bit, he would have made any team.

  • on July 16, 2013, 14:40 GMT

This ridiculous! Chandimal and Kusal both should have been axed. Selectors may have not watched the way they batted in tri-nation finals. Let them grow up to represent the country.

I think Dimuth and Kapugedara should have been given chances to be in ODI side. Not too sure why selectors are not naming Kapu in any of these outings!

  • on July 16, 2013, 14:28 GMT

Omission of Tissara was a mistake.

  • my_comments on July 16, 2013, 14:15 GMT

@ CricketMaan: Totally agree with you, but i think thisara should look for shots other than his big shots in the leg-side. he should learn to play those cheeky shots, you know those over the slip cordon glide, those lap hook shots, and those off-side shots. then he will be really good. but he definitely should be in the team. as for chandi he is a big question mark, he neither hasn't the class of mahela & sanga when they were young (not that they have lost any) nor the power hitting of thisera and mathews. So he should be in the top order (pos 1 - 4) or not at all. both chandi and tiri cant make in the team together, as tiri is showing some form tiri should be kept and chandi replaced for time being. and chandi as T20 capt thats rubbish, i dont feel as he is T20 player at all. hope what we say go to the team and mgt. LOL

  • on July 16, 2013, 14:15 GMT

right choice chandimal and we shouled get back to the team thilena tusara

  • on July 16, 2013, 14:11 GMT

Thisara is a average batsan for ODI's he rarely bats more than 20 balls! always try to slog every ball to leg side and got out! now his bowling also drop down! please dont include him! Serasinghe is far better allrounder suit for number 7 spot! and at least from this series chandimal should be bat at No 3 where he most prefered kusal,dilshan,chandi,sanga/thiri,mahela/thiri, mathews, serasinghe, kula, herath,V prerera, malinga sanga and mahela should rotate! and for the matches mathews not batting both sanga n mahela can bat

  • on July 16, 2013, 14:09 GMT

where's farveez maharoof, akila dananjaya and kithruwan vithanage

  • on July 16, 2013, 14:07 GMT

Selectors are giving another chance to Chandimal which he deserves. Not it is upto him to put his game in order.

  • on July 16, 2013, 14:05 GMT

Thisara has the best strike rate out of all SL bowlers in recent times. He should be an automatic choice for any oneday squad.

My definite starters in the squad for 11 are: chandimal , kusal perera, jehan mubarak ,dhamika prasad, thisara perera

  • CricketMaan on July 16, 2013, 12:11 GMT

Why are they toying with Thisara? What do they expect from him a 5fer every time or a 50 of 20 balls always. Chandimal has done nothing to deserve a spot. hvae they forgotten that it was Thisara's blaze in that WC final that put Lanka to 270+ or his 5fers in the past. If you want him to perform give him a long rope, instill confidence, dont just shun him in and out as your whims and fancies. An Indian fan.
