David 'Freddy' Freedman is a vastly experienced cricketer, whose skill in the unusual art of left arm leg spin has seen him win over fifty caps for New South Wales in a first class career that has spanned close to a decade. From an undemonstrative, slightly stooping action and short run-up, Freedman's tendency is to pitch fractionally short of a driveable length and to spin the ball back into right handers. But his repertoire encompasses good variety and a number of the flatter, faster balls that he bowls also have the capacity to deceive batsmen, especially on the traditionally spin-friendly pitches at his home ground in Sydney. Highlights of his career have included an appearance in two Sheffield Shield Final teams; selection in an Australia 'A' side in 1992-93; a sensational match haul of 11/93 against West Indies in 1995-96; and even two first class half centuries with the bat. Whilst his influence shows signs of waning as he heads into his mid to late-thirties, Freedman remains a popular member of the Blues squad and his guidance is likely to continue to prove invaluable to some of the younger bowlers in the State's ranks over forthcoming seasons.
