Few cricketers have met with such a gruesome end as Nathaniel Hone. He was about to play for Nashuld CC at Limerick when, on the morning of the match, he popped across the road from his hotel to visit a Dr Bourke for some unspecified medicine which had been prepared the night before by one of Bourke's assistants. However, the medicine contained a strong mixture of carbolic acid and Hone had only just reached his hotel when he collapsed. He died later that day. He was 18. The doctor's porter was arrested but released soon after as the magistrate ruled there was no evidence against him.
