Wisden obituary
William Cecil Hands, one of four survivors of Warwickshire's 1911 Championship side, died on August 31, aged 87. An amateur, who was offered but declined the captaincy in 1919, he bowled right-arm fast-medium, taking 137 wickets for Warwickshire between 1909 and 1920, with 5 for 10 against Surrey at The Oval in 1912 his be performance. In 91 innings for the county he average 12.58. 'At the age of 22,' he wrote in a recent letter `I was a very weedy type, rather like a beat stick. Plum Warner, H. K. Foster and Rhodes of Yorkshire all told me how well I bowled, but I never "arrived" . . . I think the best batsman bowled against was Macartney, and I put him as No. 1 and Hobbs as No. 2.' Business prevented his full-time participation in county cricket.
