ICC World Twenty20 - 2nd semi final

Australia v India

India won by 15 runs

Hello and a very warm welcome, wherever you are, to Cricinfo's live coverage of the second semi-final of the ICC World Twenty20, where Australia play India at Durban.

I'm Jamie Alter, and together with Anand Vasu shall bring you all the action from what many hope will be a cracking contest.

S Rajesh, our man at the ground, just tells me that Yuvraj Singh went through his drills pre-match, so it looks like he'll play today. Thats great news for Indian fans. He adds that the stadium is filling up rather quickly, and that there's overwhelming support for India.

In case you haven't heard, Pakistan beat New Zealand by six wickets in the other semi-final in Cape Town.

India have lost just once in five games in the tournament, while Australia have lost twice, including in a shock defeat by Zimbabwe in their first match. Australia would like nothing more than to add to their World Cup and Champions Trophy crowns won last season, while India would be in desperate search for a piece of silverware, not having done well at the World Cup.

The toss is about to happen, both captains walking out...Mahendra Singh Dhoni has won it, and decided that India will bat.

The team changes are one for each team, Yuvraj indeed coming in for Dinesh Karthik and Brad Haddin replacing Shane Watson, who was earlier ruled out of the rest of the tournament with a hamstring injury.

As we wait for the match to begin shortly, feel free to read Cricinfo's budding statistician Mathew Varghese's stats preview of this clash.

Rajesh says: "Clear evening, last night was very windy and overcast, but today's fine. Slight breeze, but perfect conditions for cricket."

I love to hear that.

The dancers are also at it full throttle, and we haven't even had one six or wicket.

Here come the umpires, Asad Rauf and Mark Benson, followed by XI men in yellow. The crowd goes ballistic. Adam Gilchrist captains Australia. There's a tumult around the ground as India's openers, Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag walk out. Incredible stuff.

Brett Lee has the new ball, Gambhir on strike. One slip in.

Buckle up, folks, this is the second semi-final of the ICC World Twenty20!

0.1

Lee to Gambhir, no run, oh ho, full delivery, Gambhir flashes at it, there's a noise and the ball drops just short of Adam Gilchrist!

There was a noise on that ball, just not enough carry

0.2

Lee to Gambhir, no run, back of a length, moving away from off stump, Gambhir gets across and leaves well enough alone

0.3

Lee to Gambhir, FOUR, too wide, moving away, and it allows Gambhir to throw the bat it, slashing it at some pace off the bat and up and over backward point for India's first runs, beating Bracken running across

0.4

Lee to Gambhir, 1 run, better ball, tighter line and length just around off stump, but thats equally good stuff from Gambhir, just tapping it near his feet and responding well to Sehwag's call for the quick single

Here's Sehwag now

0.5

Lee to Sehwag, no run, just back of a length outside off, Sehwag stands leaden-footed and has a go, but misses completely

0.6

Lee to Sehwag, no run, fuller ball, on off stump, Sehwag gets behind it and pushes back to Lee, who collects and feigns a throw back at the stumps, electric atmosphere at Durban

End of over 1 (5 runs) India 5/0 (RR: 5.00)
V Sehwag    0* (2b)      B Lee    1-0-5-0
G Gambhir    5* (4b 1x4)

Nathan Bracken will share the ball, as physio John Gloster comes onto the field and gives Sehwag some attention. Sehwag's on his back, he seems to have pulled a muscle. Now India called for a runner, who happens to be the hero from the other night, young Rohit Sharma. Sehwag pulled up after that quick single last over.

1.1

Bracken to Gambhir, 1 run, good ball on off stump, tight length, again Gambhir gets behind it and pushes softly to the off side, then runs for the quick single and Bracken runs down and kicks the ball near the stumps

1.2

Bracken to Sehwag, 1 leg bye, full but down leg stump, a hint of swing, Sehwag mistimes the shot, off the pads, to square leg

1.3

Bracken to Gambhir, no run, good length down leg stump, tucked to square leg, the runner wants the run but Gambhir doesnt, a bit of a mix-up but he manages to make his ground

1.4

Bracken to Gambhir, no run, tight stuff again, straight ball on the stumps, Gambhir shuffles in his crease but cant put it away on the leg side

1.5

Bracken to Gambhir, 1 run, back of a length, comes into Gambhir, who pokes at it and gets a leading edge safely through the vacant gully region

1.6

Bracken to Sehwag, 1 run, back of a length again, off stumpish, Sehwag stands up and just pushes towards point, there's further hesitation between the runners but they get a single in the end

Very good over from Bracken

End of over 2 (4 runs) India 9/0 (RR: 4.50)
V Sehwag    1* (4b)      NW Bracken    1-0-3-0
G Gambhir    7* (8b 1x4)      B Lee    1-0-5-0

More treatment for Sehwag, who gets some good strapping of the left thigh from Gloster. Australia stand around looking impatient. All set now, we can resume play.

2.1

Lee to Sehwag, no run, short of a length on middle and leg, sits up and forces Sehwag up on the toes, he plays it to leg, Lee steams in and collects and has some advice for Sehwag

2.2

Lee to Sehwag, no run, slower delivery this time, close to a yorker outside off stump, well picked and driven into the covers, where Symonds fields and cuts off any thoughts of a single

2.3

Lee to Sehwag, no run, good ball, right on a length with no room to work with and Sehwag gets behind the line, defending to Symonds in the covers again

2.4

Lee to Sehwag, 1 run, short ball just outside off stump and Sehwag does well to get tall and drop it to the leg side, with soft hands, and Gambhir and Sharma scamper the single as Lee runs across and fields

Sedate start from India as Australia are accurate

2.5

Lee to Gambhir, no run, fuller delivery on middle and leg, Gambhir tries to work it away but gets an inside-edge onto his pads

2.6

Lee to Gambhir, no run, full outside off stump, Gambhir goes for a streaky square-drive but cant beat Symonds in the covers

Another good over from the Australians

End of over 3 (1 run) India 10/0 (RR: 3.33)
G Gambhir    7* (10b 1x4)      B Lee    2-0-6-0
V Sehwag    2* (8b)      NW Bracken    1-0-3-0

3.1

Bracken to Sehwag, 1 run, full, clubbed back down the ground, Johnson at mid-on does well to stop it

3.2

Bracken to Gambhir, no run, back of a length, strikes Gambhir on the pads but its doing too much and looks high over the stumps, the ball parries towards point

3.3

Bracken to Gambhir, FOUR, back of a length, just enough width for Gambhir to slash that on the rise through the gap at backward point for four

3.4

Bracken to Gambhir, no run, back of a length again, this time he taps it away but fails to beat either point or backward point

3.5

Bracken to Gambhir, FOUR, holds back the length, gets it to move but Gambhir pokes at it and gets it all along the ground, and with slip not there anymore thats four, looked intentional

3.6

Bracken to Gambhir, no run, back of a length outside off stump, this time Gambhir shoulders arms

End of over 4 (9 runs) India 19/0 (RR: 4.75)
G Gambhir    15* (15b 3x4)      NW Bracken    2-0-12-0
V Sehwag    3* (9b)      B Lee    2-0-6-0

Bowling change: a newly-shorn Stuart Clark in

4.1

Clark to Sehwag, 1 run, back of a length on leg stump, tucked away for one

4.2

Clark to Gambhir, 1 run, good length, tapped in front of point gently and Gambhir responds well to Sharma's call for the sharp single

4.3

Clark to Sehwag, 1 run, short of a length on leg stump, Sehwag shuffles and works it fine for another single

4.4

Clark to Gambhir, no run, back of a length on middle and leg, Gambhir is tucked for room as he tries the gentle push and ends up mistiming it to backward point

4.5

Clark to Gambhir, no run, back of a length on middle and off, again he cant work it for a single, tapping it to backward point once more

4.6

Clark to Gambhir, FOUR, banged in shorter this time and Gambhir immediately gets into position, pulling over midwicket, a couple of bounces and thats four

That one ball ruining a very good over from Clark

End of over 5 (7 runs) India 26/0 (RR: 5.20)
G Gambhir    20* (19b 4x4)      SR Clark    1-0-7-0
V Sehwag    5* (11b)      NW Bracken    2-0-12-0

Mitchell Johnson comes on for a bowl.

5.1

Johnson to Sehwag, FOUR, shot! The ball's full and just a tad wide, but more than enough for Sehwag to stand and square-drive that smack through the two point fielders

5.2

Johnson to Sehwag, OUT, but he's gone now! Johnson bowls this one back of a length, the ball sits up more than Sehwag expected, and he gets an outside-edge going for a slash over point, cramped for room, and Gilchrist gleefully takes it

V Sehwag c †Gilchrist b Johnson 9 (25m 13b 1x4 0x6) SR: 69.23

First blood for Australia and its the big wicket of Sehwag. Here's Robin Uthappa.

Slip in

5.3

Johnson to Uthappa, 1 run, back of a length, great channel, Uthappa pokes at it and gets an edge, but it dies before Hayden at slip and runs away

5.4

5.5

Johnson to Uthappa, no run, back of a length outside off stump, pushed to Haddin at point

5.6

Johnson to Uthappa, FOUR, just a tad full and wide and Uthappa's onto it in style, coming forward and driving through the covers

End of over 6 (10 runs) India 36/1 (RR: 6.00)
RV Uthappa    5* (3b 1x4)      MG Johnson    1-0-10-1
G Gambhir    21* (20b 4x4)      SR Clark    1-0-7-0

6.1

Clark to Gambhir, 1 run, back of a length outside off stump, gingerly pushed to point and he calls for the run, Clarke swoops in and has lots of time to hit the nonstriker's end but throws way over them

6.2

Clark to Uthappa, no run, good length, again no room to work with, Uthappa gets forward and pushes to cover

6.3

Clark to Uthappa, no run, slower ball, on a length, drawing Uthappa forward and he gets a leading-edge that bobs up and falls short of mid-off

6.4

Clark to Uthappa, 1 run, dropped! Uthappa gets slightly cramped for room as he slashes one, it flies quick, high and fast to Clarke at backward point, who dives up and gets fingers on it but cant hold on

6.5

Clark to Gambhir, no run, back of a length outside off stump, poked to point

6.6

Clark to Gambhir, 1 run, back of a length on off stump this time and Gambhir pokes it wide of point for a quick single, good running between the wickets from India

7.3

Johnson to Uthappa, no run, slower ball, on a length, which stops on Uthappa who checks his shot and the ball pops up and falls safely in front of cover

7.4

Johnson to Uthappa, no run, back of a length, not really enough room to cut and Uthappa steers it to Clarke at backward point, and then has to react quickly to send Gambhir back, there was no single on offer there

7.5

Johnson to Uthappa, 1 run, identicaly delivery, but this time Uthappa smartly runs it down to Lee at third man for one

7.6

Johnson to Gambhir, OUT, what a catch! Johnson bowls it short, Gambhir swivels and connects well with the pull, the ball's flying hard and flat for six but Brad Hodge covers good ground, then realizes he's overrun himself, moves back and holds onto a very, very good catch to send him back! Immense effort and Australia have picked up their second wicket

G Gambhir c Hodge b Johnson 24 (37m 25b 4x4 0x6) SR: 96.00

9.6

India have really got it together in this innings after a slightly sluggish start. Australia have a big ask in front of them but if anyone has the firepower they do. This game is set up perfectly here.

For the moment this is Anand Vasu leaving the commentary hot seat, handing things over to Jamie Alter for the first ten overs of the Australian reply.
