USA Men's Cricket Team History
The first documented international cricket match was played between USA and Canada in 1844, 33 years before the first Test between England and Australia. USA continued to play bilateral cricket with their northern neighbour over the years, but their first participation in modern international cricket came with the ICC Trophy in 1979. In 2004 they qualified for the Champions Trophy, but the gulf between Associate teams and the Full Members was evident in USA's 210-run defeat against New Zealand.
They played in the T20 World Cup Qualifier in 2010, but didn't manage to make it to the main event till 2024, owing in part to administrative dysfunction, which has plagued the country's cricket for decades. In the 21st century, the USA cricket board was repeatedly suspended by the ICC over concerns related to governance and finance. In 2017, the ICC suspended USACA and a new body, called USA Cricket, took charge of the game in the country. A year later, after beating Singapore in the final of the World Cricket League Division Three, USA were promoted to the Division Two for the first time. The ICC lifted the ban in 2019 and granted them Associate status, allowing them to play their first ODI since 2004.
Their first T20I victory came the same year, against Cayman Islands, but the bigger milestone was their 2021 win over Ireland in Florida - USA's first win over a Full Member team. Three years later, in the build-up to the 2024 T20 World Cup, USA beat Bangladesh 2-1 in Dallas to register their first T20I series win over a Full Member.
The 2024 T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, was particularly memorable. They beat Canada in the opening game and shocked Pakistan with a Super Over win, and went on to qualify for the Super Eight.
The introduction of Major League Cricket, a franchise-based T20 competition, raised the profile of the game in the country, with IPL franchises like Mumbai Indians, Knight Riders and Super Kings buying teams in the league.
In 2025, the USA board was suspended yet again by the ICC for violations of the terms of ICC membership, including failure to implement a functional governance structure.
